Computer power supplies converts the alternating current (AC) electricity that arrives in our homes to direct current (DC), the ‘format’ of electricity, if you like, that your computer needs to function.

What does your PC power supply look like?

If you take the back off of the PC tower unit (only do this if you know what you are doing and always unplug from mains electricity), the power supply unit is the small metal box that sits in the corner. It is a fairly non-descript looking box and its purpose is only usually given away by the fact it has a fan and the main connector pins.

“Switching” computer power supplies

Your PC power supply is also known as ‘switching’ power supply because, as we have seen, it switches main electricity AC to DC and, at the same time, lowering the voltage. There are three ‘typical’ voltages: 3.3, 5 and 12 volts.

The first two – 3.3 and 5 volts – are used by digital circuits whilst the higher voltage figure of 12 volts is used to drive the motors in components such as disk drives, fans etc.

However, computer power supplies capabilities are specified in watts – watts are the produced from a combination of voltage (volts) and the current, measured in amps.

PCs back in the early days on their invention were switched on by a ‘flicking’ a rather hefty switch. Today, PCs are switched on the machine with a light push of a button – this sends a 5 volt signal to tell the power supply to turn on. The PC is switched off by selecting the correct option from a menu but even when it is officially ‘off’, there is a stand by voltage of 5 volts so that when the ‘on’ button is pressed, the machine activates. This stand by voltage is known as VSB.

Smaller and lighter

Modern computer power supplies are far small and lighter than their predecessors. They are also far more efficient; a small, lightweight transformer within the computer power supply will efficiently ‘step down’ from 110 volts to the voltage the computer needs to operate efficiently.

This ‘switcher technology’ is not only found in computer power supplies but also in the various power inverters than can be used in cars, where the power needs inverting from AC to DC.

Standardising of computer power supplies

Up until fairly recently, there were six different power supplies for PCs. The industry however has recently settles on a system using Advanced Technology eXtended or ATX for short. This industry standard means that the ATX power supply will fit into an ATX casing unit or tower but, more importantly, the ATX power supply possesses all the characteristics needed to run the PC’s motherboard.

Connectors on ATX computer power supplies are also now being standardised with many components now sharing the same type of connector fittings. Colour coding, as well as across-the-board standardisation is making computer power supplies easier to understand and replace when the time comes.

Getting the right power supply for your computer is essential; too little power reaching component parts means poor performance, and too much voltage has the opposite affect – damage. The ATX standardisation of computer power supplies should now begin to negate this. If you are unsure however, as with all things computing and electrical, seek specialist advice.

An LED is a small Light Emitting Diode that when low voltage electricity is applied, it produces a small light. What does an LED driver do?

LED drivers have two voltage ratings – 12v and 24v. Too much voltage cause the LED to ‘burn out’, whilst too little will produce only a dim light.
