Sin City is one of world's toughest places to perform

David Copperfield — the slickly sensational illusionist who is widely considered the most successful magician of all time — is best known for such grand stunts as making the Statue of Liberty disappear and levitating over the Grand Canyon, but he's an experienced escape artist too.

The 56-year-old has wriggled from a steel box barreling over Niagara Falls, from an imminently exploding building and from detention in one of Alcatraz's grim cell blocks (outfitted though it was with a curiously powerful smoke machine).

But once upon a time, he was stymied not by the act of getting out, but getting in. Specifically, he couldn't figure out how to break into the lucrative Las Vegas scene.

Sure, it was a much smaller circuit of hotels and casinos entertaining a much smaller pool of tourists. And Copperfield was "very young" at the time, though he'd already headlined several nationally televised specials.

Still, he was determined to land on the Strip.

"I couldn't break into Vegas," he recalled in a recent interview. "I was already on network TV but for some reason I couldn't get in — I mean, Tom Jones didn't want me as an opening act. I just couldn't break in."

Eventually, Copperfield found a way — Bill Cosby caught his show and offered him a co-headlining spot. And now, he's one of the premiere attractions on a Las Vegas strip dotted with more stars than a planetarium.

But fittingly for a city where slot machines keep scoring and drinks keep pouring on a round-the-clock basis, there's no rest even for Vegas veterans.

Tarbell Course in Magic

2012-12-11T17:13:00.002-05:00

Have you always wanted to be a magician? If you are just starting out, I suggest your first purchase to be this course. You can buy the entire set, or each book independently.

This magic volume series was originally designed as a correspondence course for budding magicians. Once they were collected and bound, the series has become an unparalleled reference standard for magicians. In its impact on the magic world, it is second perhaps in its influence on the art of magic only to Hoffman's Modern Magic, and many professional magicians have based their careers on the Tarbell Course.

The Illusionist (2010) movie

2012-12-09T23:48:00.001-05:00

A French illusionist finds himself out of work and travels to Scotland, where he meets a young woman. Their ensuing adventure changes both their lives forever.

Based on an unpublished script by Jacques Tati, The Illusionist follows a magician named Tatischeff, a man whose art form of illusion is dying. He begins taking any job that comes along his way, and while in Scotland, is accompanied by a young girl named Alice. Tatischeff and Alice develop a sort of father/daughter bond, and Tatischeff ponders his own life as well.

The film is directed by Sylvain Chomet, the man probably best known for his 2003 animated art-house feature The Triplets of Belleville. One thing that I simply adore about The Illusionist is that Chomet follows closely to the phrase "Actions speak louder than words." The film's dialogue is minimal, and for it's storytelling relies almost entirely on animation, body language, and a simple, but beautiful musical score written by Chomet himself.

This isn't even mentioning the animation style itself. I've seen many newer animated movies, but The Illusionist is easily the most gorgeous. The characters are given fluid and realistic movements, and the ambient surroundings of the city and hillsides are outstanding examples of art-direction. I practically had to suppress the tears (And no, I'm not kidding).

You may find a movie you like better than The Illusionist, but frankly, I don't think you'll be able to find one more beautiful than this one.

Wayne Houchin - Update

2012-12-06T12:37:00.004-05:00

Update from Wayne Houchin's facebook:

Franklin Barazarte, TV host who set magician Wayne Houchin on fire, is now officially a fugitive of the law.

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic – December 5th, 2012 – At 10am (AST), American magician Wayne Houchin held a press conference with his lawyers at the Renaissance Jaragua Hotel in response to Franklin Barazarte fleeing the Dominican Republic. While it’s unclear how Mr. Barazarte avoided capture with an active criminal warrant out for his arrest, he managed to travel to New York city to be with his wife Adriana Azzi. As a result of ignoring serious charges, he’s now officially considered a fugitive of Dominican law.

Houchin and his lawyers have asked the United States to arrest and extradite Barazarte to the Dominican Republic, to face prosecution for his crimes as well as civil litigation. Houchin and his lawyers said Barazarte’s actions were completely unexpected, and consider it a criminal attack.

Last night, in an exclusive interview with Univision (New York), Franklin Barazarte surfaced from hiding to respond to allegations of attempted murder. He referred to his act of pouring flaming liquid on someone as “a blessing” which was something he’d done for a “long time in private.” While he casually admits it was an “accident gone wrong,” Mr. Barazarte goes on at length to explain how he feels hurt by all the “propaganda” surrounding this case, and the insinuation that he’s even considered a criminal. Barazarte also discounts the gravity of Houchin’s injuries by mentioning that Houchin “left the clinic the same day.”

Meanwhile, Houchin is still in the Dominican Republic recuperating. Riddled with 1st and 2nd degree burns on his head, face, ears, neck and right hand, he hopes to return home to Chico, California soon.

Wayne Houchin burned by TV host

2012-11-29T12:34:00.000-05:00

This is the horrific moment a magician's face caught on fire when a stunt for a TV show when devastatingly wrong.

Theory11 cofounder, Wayne Houchin burnt his face, scalp and hands when the flaming liquid was rubbed into his face by the guest host of a program in the Dominican Republic.

"I am still in a lot of pain but I am recovering," Mr Houchin, 29, said. "The attack was intentional. "The host didn't trip and accidentally spill it on me. He intended to pour flaming liquid on me," said Mr Houchin.

He has now hired lawyers to prepare a complaint against the guest host of Closer To The Stars, Franklin Barazarte. Mr Houchin, from Chico, California, said he and two other magicians expected to be interviewed and perform magic on the program. But the host announced he wanted to give Mr Houchin a "blessing", the American said. He told one of the other magicians, BJ Bueno, to hand him a bottle of Agua de Florida, a flammable cologne. Mr Barazarte asked Mr Houchin's wife to pour the cologne into his cupped hands and told Mr Bueno to pick up a lighter on the stage and light the fluid. When the liquid in his cupped hands caught fire, the host poured it on Mr Houchin's head and rubbed it into his face.

Apparently two of the shows hosts accused him of practicing Voodoo or the Dark Arts.

"None of us had any idea us had any idea what the host planned to do," Mr Houchin said. "We had no reason to suspect beforehand that he would perform a stunt. ... "We were filming a national TV spot - we assumed the host to be a professional presenter and therefore trusted him."

The show never aired but a mobile phone video taken by a member of the magician's crew has circulated widely online.

To help out Wayne and his family in this difficult time and to ease their financial burden, a fund has been set up. To donate follow this link: http://www.paulharrispresents.com/wayne-houchin.html
