The North of Ireland is said to have it all. From various sporting events to great days out, enjoying beautiful scenery that takes anyone’s breath away. Everything is so green and appealing to the eye here in Ireland.

When sunny days make its appearance in Northern Ireland, you can expect temperatures to rise to around 25 degrees Celsius, while the winter temperatures are normally mild and just above freezing, reported to be around 4 degrees Celsius.

While anytime is a good time to visit Ireland, the best time is still during the summer months, when the days are longer and more attractions are open. September and October are normally the best time to visit Ireland as the sun does not go down until 9pm. Prices are said to be less and it does not rain as much. October offers more arts festivals.

The Main Attractions In Northern Ireland

Any visitor to Ireland must come to see the best of what Ireland has to offer in the Northern parts. Let us take a closer look at some of the well known attractions that are worth while seeing.

The Dunluce Castle

If you fancy something medieval, then Dunluce Castle is the place to see. One of the most extensive ruins in Northern Ireland, located in County Antrim, and said to be a 100 feet above the ocean on panicle of basalt rock. Some of its remains date back as far as 1200 AD, although much of it was built afterwards.

The Giant’s Causeway

One of the best tourist attractions in Ireland is the Giant’s Causeway which is owned by the National Trust. This magnificent piece of work was formed some 60 million years ago due to volcanic eruptions. Visitors can expect to see about 40,000 columns of basalt rock at the site today.

Kildare and Wicklow

During the Irish Bank holidays, Kildare and Wicklow are good places to view. Tourists and visitors will discover the rich heritage of the East Coast of Ireland over here. There are so much to do and see like the Kippure Estate that includes guided scenic walks through the Wicklow mountains and fun nature activities.

Other attractions visitors will get to enjoy features the Japanese Gardens, full day tours in a 4 x 4 of Wicklow which also includes sightseeing and hill walking. Then there is the exciting Blessington Lakes that feature Picnic Cruises where you can hire boats at ?10 per adult, ?5 per child or special family packages at ?25 for 2 adults and 2 children.

The Cliffs of Moher as Irish Bank Holiday Destination

This marvelous place has been voted to be in the final 28 of the new 7 wonders of Nature. With almost one million visitors every year, the Cliffs of Moher is Ireland’s most visited natural attraction with over 30,000 bird species including razorbills, guillemots, puffins, kittiwakes, fulmars and other birds.

It is indeed a pleasure to revel in the beautiful scenery of Ireland during Irish bank holidays in 2012.

Dipping a toe in the hotel swimming pool is for many holidaymakers the first sign that a holiday has well and truly begun. However, hotel swimming pools can soon lose their allure if they are dirty and hotel guests develop stomach infections like Cryptosporidium or salmonella. Hotel swimming pools can also be dangerous – every year more young adults are returning from holiday seriously injured after a swimming pool accident; and sadly more children are drowning on holiday because their parents may have taken their eyes off them for a moment. The hotel swimming pool is fun for everyone – families, mates on holiday, swimmers and non-swimmers – but make sure you make a splash in it for all the right reasons.

Tombstoning and holiday swimming pools

It stands to reason that if you jump off a hotel balcony into the swimming pool below, there is a chance something might go wrong. One act of derring-so in front of your mates could mean spending the rest of your life in a wheelchair, so however tempting tombstoning into the pool may be – just say no.

Similarly, jumping off tables and chairs round the pool – or pushing your mates in – can also lead to accidents. Tables and chairs are notoriously unstable, especially on slippery surfaces, and misjudging a friendly push – or diving into the pool from a table or chair – could mean serious head injuries (and possibly brain damage) for someone.

Slips, Trips and Falls by the holiday swimming pool

Slippery surfaces by the pool should also be reported – your hotel and holiday company has a duty to make sure holidaymakers are safe and slippery surfaces should be wiped if water by the poolside is causing a hazard.

Also remember that round the pool other holidaymakers may spill suntan lotion or oil – or even drop food. Report this to the pool attendant or waiter, as slipping on a slice of gherkin from someone else’s burger or on a dropped ice cream could mean you spending your holiday in A&E.

Badly maintained swimming pools can also cause accidents – unstable steps or diving boards should be reported to your holiday rep or pool attendant.

Holiday Drowning Accidents

Drowning accidents are also becoming more common on holidays – most children who drown on holiday do so within the first day of arriving, so keep an eye out for children running or playing by the pool, even if they are not your kids. Children become over-excited on holiday and parents need only take their eyes off them for a minute for tragedy to strike, so always be alert round the swimming pool for anyone in trouble in the water.

Swimming Pool Stomach Illness

Swimming pool holiday illnesses are also becoming more common – salmonella infections and the parasitic infection Cryptosporidium can be passed via swimming pools if those infected do not shower before entering the pool.

Holidaymakers with stomach trouble should not use the pool until they are better – and never allow children into the pool wearing dirty nappies, as Cryptosporidium and salmonella are present in faeces and cross-infection can occur if dirty nappies leak into the water.

And it goes without saying that you should never use the swimming pool in place of the WC – take yourself off to the loo first. Pregnant women who contract salmonella can experience pregnancy complications, so be scrupulous about cleanliness when using the pool.

If you have suffered from Cryptosporidium, you can make a claim against the UK tour operator as soon as you arrive home to the UK. If you have evidence to prove the illness was a result of the negligence of the hotel staff and the maintanence of the pool area, then you have every chance of making a successful Cryptosporidium Illness Claim with On Holiday Claims Solicitors.

If you are looking for somewhere different to eat out in York, then look no further than York’s very own “Restaurant Row” on Fossgate. It has had a tradition of serving food since back to at least the Medieval times. The variety of restaurants will have something to suit all tastes and budgets, from upmarket bistros to steak houses and Thai restaurants.

Food Arrangement / Luke Harris

As you enter Fossgate from the City Centre, you will find J. Bakers on your left hand side. J. Bakers is a modern bistro which has been in business for 7 years offering great quality food using locally sourced ingredients. It also features on the Top 50 Restaurants outside of London list, so is well worth a visit!

Further down the street, there is a branch of Loch Fyne, the established seafood restaurant. This is housed in an old ironmonger’s building and has been refurbished beautifully inside. Loch Fyne offers a great variety of food, even if you are not a fan of seafood! It is well worth looking out for one of their current offers, like their Fyne Dine Menu. At under ten pounds for 2 courses, you are getting great value for money in a lovely setting by the River Foss.

If you are looking for a livelier place to dine, then look no further than El Gaucho Argentinean Steakhouse. As the name suggests, El Gaucho specialises in a variety of steaks cooked especially to your liking, from char grilled fillet to grass-fed sirloin. The restaurant caters well for vegetarians too, serving a variety of pastas and salads. This is a busy, friendly restaurant and well worth a visit.

For a more relaxed dining experience, there is the Blue Bicycle which is a modern European restaurant situated on the Foss Bridge overlooking the river. The Blue Bicycle serves fresh, interesting food in a quaint restaurant setting. With their rustic tables and ambient decor, the Blue Bicycle is a perfect place for a quiet evening meal. The menu consists of good quality seasonal produce and homemade desserts and is changed regularly making it always worth a second or third visit!

If you are a fan of Asian cuisine then a visit to Khao San Rd is a must. This is a fairly new restaurant in the area, its good reputation has spread quickly making it a popular restaurant. It has an authentic Thai feel to it and the staff are very friendly and helpful. The menu is varied and exciting, offering a wide range of Thai food from deep fried soft shell crab to Thai grilled sirloin steak salad. The restaurant also has a takeaway menu offering 10% off the restaurant menu price so you can take home and enjoy!

Fossgate is also home to other restaurants including; Melton’s Too, Masons Bistro, The Mumbai Lounge and many more, offering a huge range of food and drink to cater for all tastes. There are also a few historic pubs along the route including The Bluebell and The Red Lion which are worth a visit for an after dinner drink or two!

One of the most obvious areas to be affected by the rise and fall of the exchange rates between Sterling and the Euro is the tourism industry. First thoughts would inevitably turn to holidays being cheaper for Brits, as the Euro becomes worth less and less against our own currency. As the saying goes though, “there are two sides to every story”. The saying could have been written to describe the effect the weakening Euro can have on tourism as far as the UK is concerned.

Better Out Than In?

Many in the UK have been feeling pretty smug over the last couple of years, as Europe struggles to get a firm hold on the future of the single currency. There is no longer any dispute over whether the UK was right to decline entry into the single currency. However, it is becoming more and more apparent that our fortunes are inextricably linked with the health, or otherwise, of the Euro Zone and its member states.

The Advantages of a Weak Euro for UK Tourists

The Association of British Travel Agents recently remarked that there has never been a better time to go to Greece, but the reasons for that advice go much deeper than simply the exchange rate. Greece, which is struggling to elect a new government at the moment, is sitting on the brink of a financial abyss. This means that although holiday prices for British tourists are barely any lower than normal, they can take advantage of the desperation of Greek businesses in the face of such difficult times. Special offers abound throughout Greek resorts as businesses fight for their share of vital tourist income. So, the combination of the weak Euro and the intense competition amongst desperate Greek business owners can make for a very cheap time, for UK tourists going to the resorts at the moment. To a lesser degree, similar situations can be found in other Euro Zone countries such as Spain, Portugal, Italy and Ireland.

The Effects of a Weak Euro on the UK Tourism Industry

Unfortunately, the weak Euro has the opposite effect on tourists that would normally come to the UK for a holiday or a short break. They are finding it increasingly expensive, when they look to convert their ailing Euros into UK Sterling. If the Euro continues to decline against the Pound, many who may have previously have come to the UK from Euro Zone countries, could give it a miss and choose destinations within the Euro Zone so that they have no worries about exchange rates.

Wider Considerations

Another factor to consider is the effect the increasing uncertainty about the Euro has on the confidence of the would-be traveller. The issues being raised by the Euro’s uncertainty is also spreading an element of fear amongst holidaymakers. Since the financial gloom descended upon us some several years ago, quite a number of holiday firms and airlines have gone to the wall. The crisis facing the Euro only makes it more likely that other operators will fail before too long.

Only recently, holiday giant Thomas Cook needed a £200 million bail out, after seeing its shares slump dramatically as bookings fell by a third at the end of 2011. The effect this will have on the wider tourism industry has yet to be realised, but a struggling Thomas Cook can hardly help consumer confidence in them, or any other tourism operator for that matter.

Summary

So, while the Euro weakening against the Pound may be great for UK tourists going to the Euro Zone in the short term, it may not be such good news for the industry as a whole as the crisis deepens. A lack of tourists visiting the UK could be to the detriment of our economy as a whole, which could mean that UK consumers may not have the disposable income to take advantage of the strong Pound on holidays abroad in the future.

The Hollywood Golden Age is said to be from around the end of the 1920’s when silent movies were coming to an end and the beginning of the 1960’s before special effect began to take the focus of a movie. They are traditional movies with a beginning a middle and an end and in most cases they involved a romantic plot and were designed to transfer the audience from their every days lives into a fantastic story and an hour and a half.

Whether you believe movies today are better or more engaging is irrelevant, no one can watch a true golden age movie without being caught up in the romance and beauty of a simpler time. It would seem that nothing was more romantic to Hollywood at the time than Europe, the land too far away to be accessible by the average Joe but close enough for the culture to reach over the Atlantic. Here are three famous golden age movies set in Europe that anyone can relive by visiting a few key points.

Roman Holiday / Photo released under public domain

Roman Holiday – Rome

Staring the encapsulating Audrey Hepburn in her first Hollywood movie, Roman Holiday follows Princess Ann/Anya as she tries to escape the pressure of her obligations just for a day. Accompanied by journalist Joe, Hepburn tours the city and sees some of its famous sites complete with a scooter as the most applicable mode of transport.

If you’re heading to Rome for a holiday you can visit the historic Spanish Steps where Joe arranges to bump into Anya so he can convince her to accompany him. Built in 1717 these steps are an iconic landmark in Rome and lead up to the 16th Century church of Trinita dei Monti. At the bottom of the steps you’ll see the world famous Barcaccia Fountain. It’s the perfect place to catch your breath from a busy day of shopping in all the surrounding boutique shops.

The second site Joe takes Anya to is the La Bocca Della Verita, an ancient marble carving said to be from the 1st century. Rumour has it that anyone who places their hand in the mouth and tells a lie will have their hand bitten off. Sat in the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin tourists flock to test this mask and most come away with their hands intact.

To Catch A Thief – French Riviera

To Catch A Thief stared the beautiful Grace Kelly and Cary Grant and follows them as retired cat burglar John works to clear his name after a copycat starts stealing jewels. This film is set in the French Riviera making it the perfect setting for Kelly’s wealthy character Francie and her mother and of course a whole host of sparkling jewels – it’s the very definition of decadence.

The Riviera is the perfect setting for this film, not because of any specific sights but because of the general reputation of the Riviera. Its wonderful weather, crystal waters and golden beaches and of course an excess of wealth make it the perfect setting for a film about wealth and love.

If you’re heading over to the Riviera there is plenty to see just driving along the stunning coast (as highlighted in the film). If you love art then Saint-Paul De Vence is the centre in this region with galleries, artist’s homes and show rooms everywhere. If you’re looking for the level of wealth and decadence seen in the film then head over to Monaco, one of the most expensive areas in the world. You’ll find shops, gardens, museums all at the highest quality that can easily swallow days of a holiday.

The Prince and the Showgirl – London

The personal life behind Hollywood ledged Marilyn Monroe is irrelevant; you can’t watch her on screen and not be encapsulated by her innocent vulnerability. As with so many of her roles, Monroe plays Elsie who initially appears strong but would dearly love to be rescued (much as Monroe was reported to be like when she was alive). Unlike the other two movies mentioned above, The Prince and the Showgirl isn’t set in any exotic or tropical climates, but in the reserved sophistication of London, England.

Elsie is a show girl who catches the attention of regent prince, Charles. Throughout the film we watch the Prince chase Elsie in an attempt to woo. She ends up proving she’s smarter and more insightful than he thought and they fall for each other.

There’s no city in the world like London for portraying a regal feeling without losing the romance and if you’re ever heading to London for a holiday there’s plenty to see. Obviously you’ve got an amazing selection of museums and theatres to see but if you just want to while away a few hours on a summers evening, take a stroll along the River Themes. Walk past the impressive Houses of Parliament and along the embankment. You’ll usually see lots of street performers asking for nothing more than a donation in their hat if you like what you see, the perfect romantic evening without spending a fortune.

British holiday cottages are a great way to see different parts of the city, and are ideal for romantic getaways or trips with family and friends. There are many different options to choose from when choosing holiday cottages, with decisions often made by preferred location, time of year, and special activities, as well as making considerations over family and pets. When looking for the right holiday cottage, travellers should think about whether they’ve always wanted to see a particular part of Britain, as well as whether they prefer to take a quick weekend away, or a longer holiday. Some options and factors that should be reviewed before booking a British holiday cottage include:

Location

Cottage holidays can be enjoyed in very different parts of the country. Many holidaymakers opt for Devon, Cornwall and the Cotswolds for their flat scenery and wide range of cottages and homes, while others prefer the more mountainous Lake District. Decisions can often be made in terms of how isolated a trip you want to enjoy, or whether you prefer to be close to a major town or village. Cottages in Sussex are recommended for the latter, as they offer quick access to London. By contrast, the rural Scottish Highlands can give you great peace and quiet in the Northernmost part of the country.

Timing

When you choose to book a holiday cottage will make a big difference to the overall experience. Christmas bookings tend to go very fast, and need to be booked far in advance to avoid both high costs and places selling out. This approach is particularly important to take if booking on behalf of a large family or a group of friend. Many holiday cottages also tend to sell out around school holidays and bank holidays, so check your calendar beforehand. You might also find that some holiday cottages can be booked during off peak season at a reduced cost.

Local Activities and Features

It is always important to look into whether a holiday cottage can offer any specific features and activities. A cottage might be self catering or catered, or might include special bathroom and living room facilities like a hot tub or video games. At the same time, the cost of a holiday cottage may or may not include charges for Internet use. When viewing a holiday cottage, try to think about whether you can access any specific local activities like horse riding or sailing. It is also worth exploring the potential of a day trip to a neighbouring village or town.

Family and Pets

Many holiday cottages will have specific rules about the number of children and pets that can be brought to a location. Problems might arise in terms of having the facilities to cope with a lot of small children, and visitors may have to bring their own equipment. However, by checking ahead and doing your research, it is possible to see unique parts of Britain, while enjoying the best facilities and activities of an area.

They say that the best way to see a city is to run around it. I think it is only runners that say that but it is very true.

I did my first marathon in October 2011, the Lochness Marathon in Scotland. It was a fantastic experience and a great personal achievement.

Amsterdam Marathon, Netherlands / Photo licensed under the Creative Commons, created by DennisM2

The next marathon I am looking to do is the Amsterdam Marathon. I have chosen Amsterdam primarily because I assume it will one of the flattest routes and therefore quickest, but also because I have been to Amsterdam a couple of times, for business and a city break and really liked the city. Travelling abroad for such an event can be expensive anyway, so I am looking for a nice hotel in Amsterdam at a good price (much like everyone). There are some great Amsterdam hotels though and even quaint little B&Bs and there are some great cheap city break
packages I plan to make the most of.

The marathon starts and finishes at the Olympic Stadium where spectators have free access to.

The route takes you through Vondelpark, the largest public park in Amsterdam and sounds quite like Hyde Park in London in that there is a lot going on. There are ponds for kayaking, playing fields and generally nice picnic areas. This will be a great area for spectators as well to enjoy the day. The marathon goes out of town slightly along the Amstel River passing traditional windmills and large stately homes. The views are meant to be stunning from here as you are slightly higher up at this stage.

There is a marathon in almost every top European city so if you are a marathon addict you can combine a city break with a marathon! Here are just a few on the ‘must do’ list:

The Paris Marathon

The Paris marathon has been voted as one of the top marathons in the world. The marathon passes by the main tourist attractions: the Champs Elysees, River Seine, the Arc De Triumph and the Eiffel Tower. Like the Amsterdam marathon, the course is very flat and so a PB (personal best) is achievable, although there are a couple of tight corners and tunnels where there can be a bit
of a human traffic jam which may hold you up.

The Rome Marathon

Just wandering around Rome, you notice stunning architecture and significant pieces of history. So the marathon will be a whirlwind of fascinating buildings and landscapes. The marathon starts and finishes at the ancient Coliseum and takes in sites such as St Peter’s Square, Vatican City, Olympic Station, Trevi Fountain and much, much more. As you are running through ancient Rome, you will come across some rough terrain such as cobbled streets so do take care – this is more about the sites that the personal bests.

Romantic cottages are ideal for celebrating a honeymoon, or simply for just enjoying a weekend away. Key benefits include the chance to experience peace and quiet in many idyllic locations across the United Kingdom, as well as the chance to explore new locations and enjoy cottage amenities. Couples looking for an alternative to a city or beach and island break should consider a cottage holiday as a way of experiencing a quiet and intimate weekend or week. With multiple locations to choose from, some of the best romantic cottages are located outstanding locations, and are further distinguished by their amenities and local activities:

Best Places to Visit

Some of the best places to visit in the UK include regions like the Lake District’s Winster Valley, an isolated location that offers great mountain, fell and lake views. Travellers seek out solitude for a romantic getaway should also consider the Ardfern Peninsular in Oban in Scotland as well as the West Coast of Scotland for more general quiet. Couples wanting to be a little bit closer to London should consider Sussex and the Cotswolds.

Further North, the Yorkshire Dales and Whitby are ideal for couples wanting to explore the English countryside. Those wanting to experience rural English living without giving up town shopping and dining can also take advantage of cottages near Bath and Exeter in Somerset and Devon. Island retreats can similarly be found on the Isle of Skye and the Isle of Wight, with the added advantage of combining rural quiet with beaches and sea journeys.

Retreat Options

Many holiday cottages are ideal for couples because of their intimacy and traditional decor. A one bedroom rural cottage with a large kitchen and dining area can make for a romantic weekend, and can still contain the best modern amenities. Finding the right holiday cottage means looking for one that is both traditional enough to feel like a break, while still providing you with lots of entertainment options.

In the same way, while it is important to find somewhere quiet, couples should consider the benefits of being within walking distance of the nearest town or village, particularly during colder winter months. Moreover, some research should be made into the local area, and whether a romantic meal or activity can be planned near to the cottage. These may need to be booked sometime in advance to avoid disappointment during a rip.

Times of Year

The main times of the year to book romantic cottages are usually around Valentine’s Day and Christmas, which might require some significant advanced booking for sought after cottages. Couples willing to go away during off peak season should consult a travel company or cottage owner before securing a date, as there may be times of year when a cottage is being renovated. Opting for weekdays and nights over weekends might also be a good budget option, while longer term planning for honeymoons should always check availability and price comparisons before deciding on a specific cottage or holiday destination.

London is a cosmopolitan city that’s rich with different people. For a parent, however, London can provide a bit of a challenge. It’s easy to think of the capital as a busy, crowded place that’s designed around shopping, but there is more!

London has a large number of parks, and some of these are among the Royal Parks in the country. These are Hyde Park, The Regent’s Park, Greenwich Park, Kensington Gardens, Green Park, Brompton Cemetery in London, and Bushy Park in Berkshire, which is north of Hampton Court. Among these parks, Greenwich stands out as a real jewel in London’s crown. Although Greenwich Park is currently under development for the equestrian and shooting events for the 2012 London Olympics, it’s worth noting in your diary as a place to visit when the Olympics are over.

Discover the universe at the Royal Observatory

Greenwich Park is a real must see for a family day out. This picturesque park boasts rolling green grass, which leads up to the historical Royal Observatory. This is the home of Greenwich Meantime, and a laser beam is cast directly from the Flamsteed House, the original observatory, showing the Greenwich Meridian Line. This is a fascinating place to take the family for a rewarding and educational trip.

The Royal Observatory is also home to the Peter Harrison Planetarium. Marvel at this incredible exploration of the universe, which often puts on specially designed films with impressive narration. Previous shows have included narration from David Tennant and Patrick Stewart. Now serving as London’s only planetarium, the Peter Harrison Planetarium employs breathtaking HD projection technology, offering a show that’s perfect for kids and adults with enquiring minds.

Greenwich Park’s Maritime History

From the height of the Royal Observatory, you can see right over the Thames to Canary Wharf, and the rest of the impressive city scape north of the river. You will also see the new Shard building, rising prominently into the sky. On the south side, the beautiful Queen’s House and National Maritime Museum.

These incredible buildings reflect the elegance and opulence of years long past. The Queen’s House is not to be missed; especially the Painted Hall, where Admiral Nelson lay in state following the Battle of Trafalgar. If you’re looking for more of the UK seafaring history, Greenwich also has the Cutty Sark, one of the last tea clipper sailing ships to be built before the advent of steam powered vessels.

Without a doubt, Greenwich has a lot to offer all the family, from the incredible attractions to the welcoming market town feel of the area.

Baby shop London: Baby Nest is situated on the outskirts of London, providing parents with quality baby equipment for years.

Arriving at York Railway Station, you get your first insight into the history surrounding the railways in this beautiful city. Today’s station was built in 1877, and at that time was the largest station in the world. It was preceded by York old railway station, which was situated on the opposite side of the road, behind the magnificent Bar Walls.

On leaving the Station, you will come across the fantastic, Victorian built Royal York Hotel. The hotel was opened in 1878, originally named The Royal Station Hotel. Today, you can enter the hotel’s pretty gardens and ascend 60 metres above the city on The Wheel of York, taking in the awe inspiring views across the city, and getting a unique view of the station and its surroundings.

Continuing on towards the city centre, you will come across a statue of George Leeman, who was the Chairman of the Railway Association of Great Britain and Deputy of North Eastern Railways. The statue was unveiled in 1885 and Station Road became Leeman Road, two years after his death.

Taking a left down Leeman Road, you will come to the world famous National Railway Museum, which opened in 1975 on the former site of the York North locomotive depot. The museum houses the national collection of historic railway vehicles, and includes some fantastic examples of Royal Trains, the Flying Scotsman, Mallard, and many steam locomotives.

In June 2012, the museum is holding ‘Railfest’, a celebration of Britain’s railways, where you can take a rare look inside the driver’s cabs, and ride on various trains. Rarely seen railway giants such as snow ploughs and a sail powered railway vehicle will also be on show.

A road train runs from the museum the short distance to the city centre; on this journey you will pass under the Bar Walls, through an impressive archway. Opposite you will see a grand Georgian building, aptly named The Cedar Court Grand Hotel, York’s first five star hotel. It was originally built in 1906 by the North Eastern Railway Company and housed their headquarters. The street to the right of the building is the site of the old railway station.

Continuing past the old Headquarters, the first street on your right is Rougier Street, which leads onto George Hudson Street. Hudson, known as ‘The Railway King’, is famed with bringing the railways to York. He became Lord Mayor of the city in 1837, the same year he had a chance meeting with George Stephenson, ‘The Father of Railways’, who had built the world’s first steam locomotive railway line. The pair worked together on the building of the railways and were also friends. By 1844, Hudson was in control of over a thousand miles of railway, but despite his success, after being discovered of committing fraud, he died penniless in 1871.

Continuing on the road train, you will pass over Lendal Bridge, look to your left and you will see Scarborough Bridge a short distance down river. This train bridge takes trains from York Station to the seaside destination of Scarborough on a single track. The road train will take you to Duncombe Place, from where you can be inspired by the magnificent York Minster, and take time to wander through the streets of the historic city itself.

Returning to the Railway Station, it is impossible to leave the city without a feeling of wonderment, having taken in the history of the rail revolution, the very thing that makes York what it is today.
