There is something indescribable about Paris. The way the light filters through the city creates an atmosphere unlike any other place on earth. Whether you are simply taking a walk down one of its famous streets or soaking in the culture at a museum or cathedral, the highlights of Paris will stay with you long after you leave the city.

Of course, there is nothing more symbolic of Paris than the Eiffel Tower. If you are looking to create a romantic evening for you and that special someone, consider basing a dinner date and tour of Paris around the Eiffel Tower.

Dinner at the Eiffel Tower is an experience that no one will ever forget. The tower boasts of two restaurants. One is on the ground level and offers traditional French cuisine; plan ahead and make reservations because there is usually at least a two week wait. The décor is eclectic, and the dress is somewhat formal. Patrons should wear something nicer than jeans and trainers.

The second restaurant is located on the second level of the tower and is also a level higher in cost, atmosphere and attire than the ground floor restaurant. Expect to pay a premium for everything from drinks to entrees. However, if you are looking to create an unforgettable evening, it will be worth every penny.

The second level of the Eiffel Tower offers a view just as magnificent as the view from the top, yet you are protected from the strong winds and other elements that a visit to the top brings with it. Not to mention, there is almost no wait to reach the second level, whereas the wait to attain the highest level can knock the romance out of the most elegant pair. Therefore, visitors will not be missing out by staying closer to the ground.

Following your Eiffel Tower dinner, a lazy boat ride down the Seine will be the finishing touch to your night. As the boat winds down the river, you will see locals dancing along the banks of the Seine as sumptuous music fills the air. The dark river will stretch before you as you become ensconced in the atmosphere that is so uniquely Parisian. As the boat winds back up toward the Eiffel Tower, the tower will erupt in lights that sparkle and twinkle before your eyes. You will be breathless as you take in the symbol of love and romance that seems to light up just for you.

Nestling into the arms of someone you love will never feel as decadent as when you are gliding down the Seine on one of these Paris tours. When your holiday is over, you can look back with joy and sigh, “We’ll always have Paris.”

Located between Europe, northern Africa and southwestern Asia, the Mediterranean Sea borders 21 different nations on three continents. A holiday in the area, really does provide something for everyone, whether you’re seeking a lazy beach break, or want to explore the fascinating history of countries including Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Israel and Egypt. The wealth of historical sites, including many UNESCO World Heritage Sites, is enough to keep the most ardent history buff busy for many vacations to come, and just some of the must-see sites include:

Spain

Since its days as a Roman outpost, Spain was a Moorish settlement before evolving into the contemporary European country it is today. Its historic sites celebrate the full breadth of its heritage, but none captures its Moorish past more than the breathtaking, Andalucia. On the left bank of the River Darro and occupying a strategic hilltop overlooking the city of Granada, this breathtaking palace and fortress complex was constructed during the mid 14th century by the Berber rulers of the Emirate of Granada. The Moorish architecture, shady courtyards and beautiful gardens, with views of the Sierra Nevada mountains have visitors from around the world flocking there on a daily basis. The areas open to the public are the Alcazaba, the Nasrid Palaces, the Mosque baths and the Generalife gardens. Since entrance is strictly controlled, visitors should purchase tickets in advance, to avoid disappointment. To arrive in Granada and not be able to visit the Alhambra, would be a tragedy.

France

Languedoc Roussillon in southern France has one of the most well preserved Roman aqueducts in existence. The 1st century Pont du Gard is just part of an extensive water system designed to carry water from the River Eure to Nimes, some 30 miles away. The half mile long and 165 feet high tri-level aqueduct was originally constructed without the use of mortar, and its stones are held together with iron clamps. The stones, some of which weigh more than six tons, were hoisted into place by a human-powered treadmill block and tackle winch. The aqueduct was restored during the 18th century, and visitors today can now walk across it.

Italy

Known as the “Eternal city,” no visit to Italy is complete without a visit to Rome, which abounds with historical sites, Roman architecture and masterpieces of art, spanning the different historical layers which have built this amazing city through the centuries, from the remains of the Roman empire, through the Medieval and Renaissance periods to the modern day site of 21st century architectural statements. The city’s quintessential spectacle has to be the, commissioned by Vespasian in 72 A.D. and inaugurated by Titus in 80 A.D. Elliptical in shape, its 76 entrances allowed 50,000 spectators to enter and watch gladiatorial battles. Built from brick and concrete, and faced with travertine and marble, the amphitheatre boasts three levels of arcades in Doric, Ionic and Corinthian styles. The Coliseum deteriorated into little more than ruins, until 1750 when it was saved by Pope Benedict XIV, who declared “this is a holy place, where Christian martyrs’ blood was shed..”

Greece

Athens may be a modern day nightmare when it comes to traffic and getting around, but this should not deter visitors from seeking out the Acropolis, atop of which sits the Parthenon, commonly known as the Temple of Athena. Constructed between 447-432 BCE, the Doric temple was dedicated to the goddess Athena, also known as Parthenos (virgin) and housed a monumental statue of her which was made from gold and ivory by Pheidias. Mathematicians will be interested to learn that with eight columns at the front and seventeen columns at the flank, the temple conforms to the ratio of 9:4, which its builders used to govern the vertical and horizontal proportions of not only the temple structure, but many other proportions within it, such as the height of the columns and the space between them.

Israel

History and archaeology lovers, as well as pilgrims from around the world have plenty of sites to visit in Israel. One of the most visited is the fortress of Massada, built in 30 BCE by King Herod. It sits on top of a steep mountain overlooking the desert to the west and the Dead Sea and Jordan to the east. At the start of the revolt against Rome in 68 BCE, Massada was conquered by a group of Jewish zealots and was to become their final stronghold, before the Romans besieged the fortress, having constructed an earthen rampart on the western side of the mountain. Built on three rock terraces, the most impressive structures still standing are Herod’s northern palace, a large bath house with a mosaic floor and walls decorated with murals.

Egypt

The oldest and only of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World to remain largely intact, the Great Pyramid of Giza is the largest of the three pyramids in the Giza Necropolis. Built as a tomb for fourth dynasty Egyptian Pharaoh Khufu, over a 20-year period from around 2540 BCE, the pyramid, which originally stood 480 feet tall, and comprises more than 2.3 million stone blocks weighing two and a half tons each, remains an amazing feat of construction that still has engineers, archeologists and scholars in awe of its magnitude. Erosion has reduced the pyramid by around 30 feet in height, but it remained the tallest man-made structure for 3,800 years.

Many people have a wanderlust that makes them avid travelers. Visiting foreign lands has a romantic appeal that many want to explore. Being a full-time traveler seems like an impossible dream, but it can happen if you find ways to make money while traveling.

Making Money / 401K

1. Write Articles or Blog Posts

Travel writers are often envied. They get to work anywhere they want because all they need is a computer. There are courses and books that teach people how to make money writing as a travel writer. With practice most people can learn to create competent copy. Businesses, travel magazines, and online publications all need new content. Some travelers make money with their own travel blog or write guide books for publishers. Most companies hiring writers want someone who has actually traveled to an area.

2. Teaching English

Although more and more people around the world speak English, you can make money tutoring people to improve their fluency in the language. There are foreign schools, businesses and individuals looking for help with their English speaking skills. By talking to people, reading local ads online or off, you can probably find a student in need of your teaching services.

3. Take Photographs

Photography is a great way to make money while traveling. If you have the desire, the skill and the equipment, you can take photos of popular tourist attractions, little known parts of a region, landscape photos or photos of visitors or inhabitants enjoying the city. There are many places in need of new and interesting photos. Stock photo companies always need new pictures, as do travel magazines, businesses, advertising agencies, travel agents and publishers. The photographs need to be of high quality for you to sell them.

4. Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is a way to make money selling the products and services of others. With each sale, you get a commission. There are numerous blogs, ebooks and courses that teach people how to make a living online with just their computer. You can sell in any niche such as imported coffee, jewelry, baby clothes, hosting services, or golf apparel. The key is to sell products and services you are passionate about. Some people report making $10,000 or more a month as an affiliate.

5. Selling Products

Some travelers make money buying and selling items. During your travels you can buy items and then resell them someplace else. It is important to know what products are in demand. Since you want to make a profit, the price for buying and selling the item is important. You can sell the products locally, as you travel or even sell them on online auction sites.

6. Using Your Skill Set

Whatever skills you have, you can use them to make money. If you are a hair stylist, you can cut hair. If you are a web designer or graphic designer, you can make money as well. Those skilled in online research or in computer programming can also find paying work using just the computer. If you are a good cook, you can make meals for families or businesses. With some thought, there are probably a few skills you have that you can turn into money while traveling.

There you have it, six ways to make money while traveling the globe and living your dream life. Even with the best travel credit cards or with no foreign transaction fee credit cards, you are still building up debt. Earning money as you travel is a great way to depend less on credit cards and more on the skills you have to offer.

Paris is a popular destination for people from around the world, drawn to its history, culture, and of course, romance! A visit to the French capital does not need to be outrageously expensive, and it is easily possible to enjoy a cheap city break in Paris without missing out on anything.

The key to planning cheap city breaks, is to first identify what the major costs may be. These are normally to be found in transport, accommodation, and activities. By choosing the most economical way to go about each of these things, weekend city breaks anywhere in Europe become more affordable.

Airline Fares: Landing on the cheapest options

Depending on the destination, the cost of flights can quite often be the most expensive part of a weekend city break in Europe. There are several ways that one can go about reducing the cost though, and all that is needed is a little time and effort. The well-known budget airlines such as Ryanair and Easyjet all have websites that can be browsed through, and from time to time, they also run worthwhile deals. Websites that compare the prices of different airlines can also be helpful in tracking down a cheap flight. Examples of such sites are skyscanner, Opodo, Expedia, Spa Travel, fare compare, etc.

Accommodation: Getting the best deals

After the flights, accommodation can be the next most expensive part when planning weekend city breaks in Europe. Fortunately, the internet can again be of assistance, and it is possible to both view and book hotels for a cheap city break in Paris online. Many hotels will offer some form of discount if staying more than two nights, and so the overall cost per person per night can be reduced.

Activities: Cheap and Cheerful things to do

The French capital has a wealth of things to see and do, and there are several ways to do this in the most economical way whilst not compromising on seeing the attractions themselves.

The first thing to do, is spend a little time in researching Paris, and visit those sites that are grouped together in order to avoid zig-zagging all over the city. Saving travel costs on taxis or other public transport goes a long way to make a cheap city break in Paris. Another idea is to pick the best day to see each attraction. Sundays in particular are a good time to see some places, as the Louvre is free one Sunday per month, and the Sunday organ recital at the Notre Dane Cathedral adds another dimension to the experience there. Paris also has many free museums, such as the Modern Art Museum, Fine Arts Museum and the Paris Fashion Museum. The Rodin Museum is also free on the first Sunday of every month.

Perhaps the most helpful piece of advice when planning cheap city breaks in Paris, or indeed any other city in Europe, is to be flexible. Whilst weekend city breaks might be the most desired choice, it is actually a lot less expensive to travel between Monday and Thursday than it is during the weekend. Early morning flights can also be cheaper than mid morning flights, and occasionally, leaving booking flights and hotels until the last minute can lead to price reductions.

St. Tropez, located on France’s Cote d’Azur, is everything its name evokes. It is a destination worthy of the rich, a seaside village ready to welcome visitors, and a backdrop appropriate enough for the Brigitte Bardot film “And God Created Woman”. All of this makes St. Tropez popular with every person who appreciates cultural charm mixed into his or her vacation plans. St. Tropez is perfect for yacht charters because the port can accommodate everything from small bareboats and luxury mega charter yachts. Once guests have arrived safely at the docks of St. Tropez, they have a nice array of choices for entertainment, and if they have timed their trip right, they also get to experience the world renowned regatta Les Voiles de St. Tropez.

Les Voiles de St. Tropez / Michael Reuter

When considering chartering a yacht for a French Riviera cruise, you should know that azure skies are the limit when it comes to high end luxury. Upon first setting sight of St. Tropez, you will notice that no yacht is too big, too ostentatious, or too opulent. St. Tropez is a visual feast, and if you sail in on a modest catamaran, you will get to enjoy it just the same. Choose the powerboat, sailboat, or super yacht that best suits your group, and bear in mind that you won’t spend all of your time onboard once you’ve reached St. Tropez.

What would the south coast of France be without beautiful beaches? St. Tropez’s famous beaches, Plage de Pampelonne and Tahiti Beach, are worth visiting, especially if you are interested in people watching. There are restaurants and cafes here, of course, but it’s actually an outdoor market that comes most highly recommended for typical French provisioning. Stop by the Place des Lices to shop for delectable picnic food, and then head to Tarte Tropezienne for the area’s outstanding namesake dessert. Cap off any evening with a drink at Les Caves du Roy, Le Papagayo, or Café Senequier. By day, take your guests to Maison des Papillons to see a grand collection of butterflies, or challenge them to a match on the courts at Tennis Club de St. Tropez. The Musee de L’Annonciade is also a terrific option for visitors to the region who want to experience the beauty of St. Tropez as captured by famous artists over the years.

If you manage to time your trip around the 1st of October, then you are in for a treat. Les Voiles de St. Tropez is a spectacle whether you participate in it or just watch. This sailing regatta brings about 3500 crew from all over the globe to compete in the fun that is this end-of-summer sailing race. You may charter a boat to race, or you may opt to watch from the sidelines. There is much celebrating either way, and it gives visitors a sense of community with the other boating enthusiasts. Perhaps you’ve made the voyage at another time of year and still want to experience St. Tropez from a different angle; try climbing onboard schooner Le Brigantine, which will take you on an unforgettable tour of Baie de St. Tropez.

Despite its popularity, St. Tropez retains much in the way of village charm. Many people will have come to its shores on their super yachts, but many others will have traversed from inland. Not everyone can afford to stay for very long, but anyone can come and feel the sand, surf, and sunshine for a short while. Book a chartered yacht soon, and be one of those lucky enough to have sailed stylishly into port at stunning St. Tropez.

Whether it’s Valentine’s Day, an anniversary, time to reconnect as a couple, or your very first weekend away together as a couple, here’s how to get a great deal on a romantic getaway in Edinburgh.

Coastal Edinburgh, Scotland, UK / Stuart Caie

Edinburgh offers great opportunities for romance. Great restaurants, beautiful scenery, rickshaw rides, oodles of fabulous hotels… Here are some ideas to help you plan for your weekend away:

Lodgings

There are some great websites that will help you learn a lot about the available hotels. You’ll find travellers’ sites and review websites where people share their experience at hotels they’ve stayed at. You’ll also find deals online where you can book hotels for significant discounts. This could mean staying at a 4 or 5 star hotel for the price of a 3 star hotel.

Many Edinburgh hotels offer very romantic packages including meals and often including extra sightseeing activities as part of the fee. A bit of shopping around could help you save a lot of money.

Restaurants

Check out some restaurant reviews, too, to see what’s near your hotel and what’s on offer during the time you’re expecting to visit. Your hotel may offer free meals as part of the package or vouchers for local restaurants, too. You can also find out on online review sites a bit about the average price of a meal for restaurants within walking distance of your hotel. If you want a special treat and are willing to splurge on a romantic meal, there are a few restaurants with Michelin stars, too.

Edinburgh Castle / Saffron Blaze

Finding Things to Do

Beyond spending plenty of alone time together in your cosy love nest, here are some of the common things lovers love to do in Edinburgh. (Many of them are low cost or even free):

Dean Village – is a pretty and picturesque village. Perfect for a romantic stroll.

Royal Mile – This road leads toward Edinburgh Castle and is great for shopping, sightseeing, eating, and soaking in the history of this city.

Royal Botanical Gardens – The gardens offer a lush and aromatic place to stroll and this is a very popular place to visit for tourists.

Museums and art galleries – The Museum of Scotland is great if you’re interested in finding out more about Scotland’s history. There are probably at least several museums and art galleries within reasonable walking distance of your hotel, too.

There are often organised walking tours at night, too, that share some of the darker secrets of the city. Those tours will probably make the hairs on the back of your head stand up and make you want to get closer to your significant other!

The above list doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface. There are family activities, couples’ activities, and plenty of sights to see. You’ll find many top fifty and even top one hundred lists online with things to see and do in Edinburgh. If it’s romance and privacy you’re after, you won’t be disappointed, either! Again, a bit of shopping around will help you save money and you’ll also find plenty of info to help you make the most of your weekend getaway.

Portugal is a tiny island with a rich cultural background, heavily spiced with influences from different countries due to their many colonisations. In fact, Portugal has been colonised by more countries than nearly any other island, a contributing factor to their diverse culture.

But the word I am looking at here is spiced. Portugal features some of the richest, most delicious and most interesting recipes on the planet and as a food connoisseur I can’t resist a single delicious mouthful.

Portuguese food is similar to Spanish food with Mediterranean and Indian influences. The cuisine is unique to the world which is probably one of the reasons why I love it so much. Traditional ingredients include meat, fish, olive oil, tomatoes, cheeses, breads and shellfish sauces (ingredients are actually similar to both Mediterranean and Spanish dishes). However, the main distinction of Portuguese food is that they spice their food with herbs and spices commonly associated with the Middle East.

Breakfast starts out with a simplicity that I love. A bread roll with homemade cheese, jam or even plain butter, European in style, it resembles nothing quite as much as a typical Dutch breakfast.

From a simple breakfast, you move on to soup. If you know anything about Portuguese food, you know soup is important. It is served with lunch, dinner and if it’s cold enough, with breakfast as well. You can’t get enough of soups and Portuguese soups are rich in flavour and texture. Lunch is a light version of dinner and dinner can be anything from roasted lamb, grilled suckling pig to any Portugal’s famous fish and especially cod. All seasoned with an incredible array of spices of course.

And now the point, each day hundreds if not thousands of tourists flock to Portugal to enjoy the sunny weather, beaches and the music. A good 60% of them don’t even try the food.

It completely puzzles me (being a person who will go to a restaurant and order anything that I can’t pronounce) to see anyone going to explore a culture and completely missing out on the food. Sure McDonalds is cheap and sure it’s easier to stop by the grocery store or a restaurant chain you know to buy familiar foods, but you are literally missing out on the best part of Portugal.

Portuguese food is possibly the most unique cuisine in the world. It’s delicious, laden with flavour, mostly healthy and can be quite affordable if you go to the right places. Or if you’re on a budget you can take my cue and find recipes and make it yourself! Portuguese food is relatively simple to make so long as you have basic cooking skill and patience (it takes lots of patience).

If you ask me, traveling to a sunny location such as Vale Do Lobo should involve trying the food. If you’ve been to Portugal and stayed at a villa, you shouldn’t leave without knowing what Codieau a Portugesa (chunky stew), Enchidos (a type of sausage) or francesinha (A rather interesting dish of tripe, lungs and liver, not for the weak of stomach).

Traveling to anywhere should be an experience that takes in all aspects of the culture, food, architecture and… white sandy beaches.

But you don’t have to travel to enjoy food which is one of the reasons why I love it. Trying a culture is as easy as trying the food. It expresses the history, the influences and the location of an area and can teach you a lot about a country before you ever travel there.

If you’re planning to go to Portugal, staying at Vale do Lobo Villas is a great way to enjoy the luxury side of the island. All you have to do is show up, visit the beach and remember to try the food!

London attractions saw record numbers of visitors in July last year and it looks like it will be far more than that this year with the 2012 Olympics being hosted in London! Surveys took place at over 30 attractions in London and there were over 5 million visitors passing through the gates of attractions including Madame Tussauds, Tower of London and Buckingham Palace to name but a few!

Tower Bridge / Frank Steiner

One interesting thing about the survey was that there was actually a drop in the number of visitors in May, this was because May saw stunning weather in the UK and therefore there was a drop in indoor attractions in London but outside attractions saw a massive boost. This is a great consideration for the UK Tourism Companies, in order to be prepared for an un-predictable UK Climate, they should ensure the attractions can cater for both weather conditions.

What does this show?

It shows London is as popular as ever with overseas tourists flocking here in the Summer months to see all the fabulous culture and fine restaurants and attractions that London has to offer. It is also great to see that the attractions in London are appreciated by those that visit London and also shows just how important Tourism is to the UK and London economy. It also shows that people are willing to spend money on seeing attractions even if the pricing could be considered expensive, what is important to tourists to London is value for money – they are happy to pay more but they expect more for it.

What are the key attractions that people visit?

The Key attractions that are the most popular with tourists to London are the London Eye, Buckingham Palace, Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey. Of course not everyone that wants to come to London spends just their time in London and there are a wealth of things outside London that people want to see such as Windsor Castle, Stonehenge, Bath and even short trips up to Edinburgh. What this survey shows though is that those people who come to London don’t just stay in – they get out and about and visit the range of Museums, shows, attractions that are on offer in London and it is important to the UK Economy that these attractions remain at the front of other cities as they are a showpiece for London and a huge source of income to the UK.

When you walk into the Leeds Armoury, one of the first things you see is their “Wall of Steel” It is one of those things you could easily spend the whole day just staring at and taking in. Every day we watch movies and read book and learn about the great battles of ages past, but seeing this particular artful display of steel armour takes your breath away. You are struck first by the realization that it is what it is. It’s the real thing. You are not touring the special affects workshop of the latest blockbuster film, you are looking at authentic pieces of steel, the very swords that were clutched by soldiers fighting for their lives.

Hall of Steel, Leeds / Paul8032

The view provided by the display, encompassing every floor of the armoury, overlooks the city of Leeds, Clarence Dock, and the Air/Clader navigation canal. It is a very different world from the one in which those swords were used. Conflict happens on a supposedly more sophisticated level thousands of miles away from us, out of sight and shamefully, out of many of our minds. Our cities are no longer the fortresses they once were but rather places we come for excitement and pleasure.

We see those swords, one after the other, over 2,500 pieces of steel, and we can attempt to imagine the masses of armoured soldiers marching across the very lands we amble along with our friends. We walk those hills breathing in the fresh air, exercising our bodies that sit in front of computers, and anticipating a warm pub meal afterwards as a reward. The weight of our backpack in which we carry a couple of water bottles is nothing compared to the weight of armour those soldiers had to carry and the sense of dread and fear that could have been lurking at every turn.

We stand and stare at the largest mass display of arms and armour since the 19th century. Armour from as early as the 1600’s, and military equipment from the 1800’s. The display is beautiful, but is also sad. One wonders how much blood has been shed by the seemingly endless display of swords mounted all around. What were the emotions running through the hearts of those who held them? Fear? Anger? Exhilaration? Did those swords make those men feel powerful, or vulnerable? I suspect each sword has several stories to tell, stories we try and tell through fiction, but stories we will never really know.

The Hall of Steel sets distinguishes the Royal Armoury from other museums. One feels as though they have stumbled into a mass grave, or at best, a memorial or tribute. The men who held those swords are all dead, but we remain, wondering what it was really like. War and conflict are things we still have not managed to abolish and avoid. We are reminded that what was such a reality for them is still our reality today.

We know it’s wrong but we are fascinated by violence. We know it should not result in hurting people, but we long for something to pour lives into. We sense a thrill in risk, which compels us to jump from airplanes and hang from bungee cords. It is with great fascination that we pour over the actual weapons, armour, and equipment used throughout history, knowing that much of what has happened in the past has resulted in where we are today.

The Royal armoury has a way of satisfying our curiosity about the armour, displaying it for us to wonder about and admire, but amidst all the displays, informational videos, and artwork, the Hall of Steel stops us in our tracks and challenges us to consider the realities of war. It asks us questions we most likely don’t know the answer to, filling us with conflicting emotions of awe, admiration, pride, but also sadness, horror, and doubt.
