A cockatiel "Ruca" escaped yesterday on the 13/4/12 and was last seen in the hulme high street area.
Ruca is average sized ,mostly grey with white tipped feathers , a yellow face with red/orange cheeks. he has a blue tag on his left foot also.
Hes friendly but quite young and likley to be nervous and scared if seen please attempt capture using a large

But Stephen, who was based in MMU’s art department on
Chatham Street, says his photos of Hulme and Moss Side remain the most memorable. “It was right on our doorstep and obvious the people and environment were changing fast,” he said.
“There was an incredible sense of community there in the 1960s even though most people hardly had anything.”

Endangered building in Hulme

THE UNITARIAN CHAPEL on Upper Brook Street, Manchester, is among the 10 most endangered buildings in England and Wales, according to the Victorian Society.

The roof of the Grade II-listed chapel, which dates back to the late-1830s, has been taken off for safety reasons and the Victorian Society wants Manchester City Council to ensure the rest of the building is protected. The other buildings are in Leicestershire, Birmingham, Stoke-on-Trent, Sheffield, Grimsby, Liverpool, London and Vale of Glamorgan

A man has been arrested in connection with a series of sexual assaults on women and schoolgirls in the Oxford Road and Rusholme areas. The 22-year-old man was arrested on Cavendish Street, Hulme by patrolling officers this morning, Monday 11 October 2010.
He remains in police custody for questioning.

New running group launched in Hulme Manchester

A new Run in England group has been launched in Manchester, aimed at beginners in the Hulme and Moss side areas of the city but anyone who wants to get started is welcome along.

Hulme Runners meet at the Zion Centre on Stretford Road in Hulme with sessions running on Mondays, starting at 5.45pm until 6.45pm. This friendly group is geared towards helping people start running in a safe, supportive environment and will also provide an excellent opportunity for people to get to know others from their local community while getting fit.

Run in England qualified leaders Nicky Lidbetter and Pete Nunes (pictured above) will take the sessions. Both work for mental health charities and recognise the benefits that running can have to those living with difficulties such as anxiety and depression. Both have experienced the benefits of using running as a tool for stress-management and want to encourage others to start running so they too can experience these benefits.

Pete works as an operations manager for an anxiety disorders charity and spends much of his working day supporting people with psychological difficulties. He’s been a runner for most of his life and said: “Running is a great way to de-stress and forget your problems. I’ve started group as I know how good running has made me feel and because it’s a cheap sport it’s a great way to keep fit.”

Nicky has been running for around three years and wishes she had discovered it earlier! As the head of two busy mental health charities she often uses running to help deal with the pressures that her work can bring. Also, after having two children she found running to be an excellent way to get back to fitness, while reducing stress.

She further explained the reasons for starting the group: “We are aiming for our group to be as inclusive as possible and somewhere that beginners and those new to running can go without feeling awkward and uneasy.”

Zion’s 99^th Birthday in Collaboration with the Lost In Hulme Exhibition!

Manchester’s leading creative space for young people is celebrating in style this weekend, hosting a party to mark its 99^th birthday. Zion Arts Centre has occupied a landmark building in Hulme since 1911 and has become an integral part of Hulme’s community and cultural landscape.

The 99^th birthday party on Sunday 10^th October is being organised by young people from the Young Leaders Forum, a scheme run by Zion Arts Centre in partnership with Price Waterhouse Coopers which aims to develop leadership skills in young people aged 11 – 25.

The event will feature live performances from home grown artists, drinks, food and a chance for artists and local residents alike to celebrate the rich heritage of the area and soak up the atmosphere!

The 99^th birthday is the start of our countdown to Zion’s 100th year which we will be celebrating in style with a year of centenary events. To help prepare for the centenary we are taking a retrospective look on both Hulme and the Zion Centre itself.

Memories of the area are being sparked by an exhibition of photographs entitled ‘Lost Hulme.’ The exhibition at Zion Arts Centre, by MMU student Claire O’Hanrahan in collaboration with academic and historian Terry Wyke, is made up of images of Hulme’s unique urban landscape and community from the 1880s to the 1980s. Residents of the area have been invited to share their own memories to help build up an archive of material charting Hulme’s history and development.

So come down, share your memories and celebrate!

GCSE CELEBRATIONS IN MANCHESTER

GCSE celebrations in Manchester on Tuesday - all under 18s invited

Greater Manchester Police and ITV Fixers are collaborating on a unique event that will give the city’s GCSE graduates a chance to celebrate together in a safe environment on results day next Tuesday.

The unique event is being filmed by ITV Fixers and will feature on ITV’s Granada Reports on Thursday 2 September.

The celebration is the brainchild of 16 year old Akeim Mundell, from Moss Side, who wanted to bring teenagers from the city together in a safe event to enjoy their exam results and have a party together before studying and college take over their lives again in September.

Akeim has become an ITV Fixer to help promote the event, which is being held at Jabez Clegg, Portsmouth Street, Manchester, on Tuesday, 24^th August, from 7pm to 11pm. The event costs £8 in advance and there will be no ticket sales at the door. The event is also alcohol-free and all bags will be searched upon entry.

“We want to give young people a chance to come together and mark their GCSE results and to celebrate their summer freedom before they return to school and college,” says Akeim.

“This is going to be a safe event that unites people from different backgrounds from all over Manchester and is also going to help charities in the city and beyond.”

The charities which stand to benefit from the event are The Christie cancer charity, Manchester Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Centre, the Umthombo Street Children project in South Africa and the Rays of Sunshine children’s charity.

The Summer Extravaganza features DJ Silva playing the best of funky house, bashment, electro, dubstep and RNB sounds, there will be spot prizes and every attendee will be given a goody bag to take home.

ITV Fixers with vinspired.com is a major campaign created by the Public Service Broadcasting Trust, giving young people between the ages of 16-25 the opportunity to tackle any issue that they feel strongly about. What they choose to do is up to them as long as it benefits at least one other person.

The Fixers are given all the resources they need to make their chosen project a success, with creative help from media professionals to make their own promotional material, from DVDs to websites. Support is on hand for the duration of the project and a broadcast production team produces features about the Fixes for ITV regional news.

Margo Horsley, chief executive of the Public Service Broadcasting Trust, says: “Fixers are young people with passion, setting the agenda and changing stereotypes. We want to give them the chance to decide what they want to do, develop their own projects, and give them a little bit of help if needed. I’ve seen how energetic and committed they are when what they’re doing means something to them. What we’re seeing has really made me question whether young people deserve such a bad press.”

Car Park Robber jailed - Hulme - Old Trafford - Manchester

An apologetic robber has been jailed indefinitely over a string of attacks.

Desmond McKenna (born 07/08/66) of Carlton Avenue, Old Trafford, was given an indeterminate sentence for public protection (IPP) at Manchester Crown Court Crown Square today, Wednesday 11 August 2010.

He must serve six years before being considered for parole.

McKenna pleaded guilty to nine counts of robbery at an earlier hearing.

At about 7.15pm on Thursday 4 March 2010, McKenna threatened two women with a knife as they got into a car after shopping at Asda in Hulme and took a bag from behind the driver's seat.

McKenna threatened a man and woman in the same way in the same car park at 9.20pm on Wednesday 10 March 2010. He took their wallets during the robbery.

At 12.50pm on Friday 12 March 2010, McKenna used a knife to threaten a worker at the Derbyshire Building Society on Cross Street, Manchester.

He stole money and said to the cashier as he was leaving: "I'm sorry, love."

At 8.20pm on Thursday 18 March 2010, he pulled open a car door at the Asda in Hulme, threatened a woman with a knife and demanded money. She sounded the horn so he ran away empty handed.

An hour later he went into a garage on Wilbraham Road, Chorlton, took out a knife and said to the shop assistant: "Give me the money or I will kill you." Cash was taken.

At 12.45pm on Friday 19 March 2010, McKenna went into the Derbyshire Building Society on Cross Street again and demanded money.

The cashier caught the attention of a security guard, who went over and asked McKenna to leave.

He refused, jumped onto the counter and started grabbing cash.

The security guard tried to stop McKenna leaving by holding the door shut but McKenna broke through it with a chair and escaped.

At 3.30pm on Thursday 25 March 2010, McKenna went into the Leeds Building Society on Cross Street and demanded money from the cashier.

As she was handing him notes he said: "I'm the one who did the Derbyshire twice. I know I'm going to get caught and I'll pay for everything I've done. I'm sorry for doing that."

At 5.20pm on Monday 29 March 2010, McKenna threatened staff at Iceland in Old Trafford with a knife and hammer and stole cash.

Officers from Greater Manchester Police's Metropolitan Division were looking at CCTV in connection with the robberies at Asda and spotted McKenna at the cash machines shortly before one of the attacks.

The same officers saw the CCTV of the building society robberies in the city centre and worked with police from the North Manchester Division to trace McKenna.

He was arrested on Saturday 3 April 2010.

He admitted to all of the offences and said that he needed the money to feed his drugs habit.

Detective Constable Emma Taylor, based at Grey Mare Lane, CID, said: "McKenna put all of these people through frightening experiences and rightfully justice has been done today for those victims.

"McKenna now has plenty of time to think about his actions and work on changing his ways."

Carnival route Hulme Manchester

Greater Manchester Police has put plans in place to ensure that all visitors to this year’s Caribbean Carnival enjoy a safe and entertaining event.
The carnival takes place on 14 and 15 August and is a celebration of Caribbean music, dance, theatre and costume.
Thousands of people are expected to attend the event in Alexandra Park, Moss Side and there will be a police presence in the area.

The annual Caribbean Carnival is set to take place there on August 14th and 15th, with a street procession making its way through the Moss Side and Hulme areas before reaching the city centre.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, organiser Mike Bisson said the 2010 carnival will be a memorable occasion regardless of the weather, which has been unpredictable in previous years.

“If it’s grey it’s no problem,” he told the newspaper.

“It will be vibrant and it will be colourful. There’s going to be lots of bands and lots of floats.”

The theme of this year’s carnival is Diversity Explosion and about 450 dance troupes are expected to take part.

Chief Inspector Wasim Chaudhry of Greater Manchester Police’s Metropolitan Division said: “The Caribbean Carnival is a fantastic example of the cultural diversity we are so proud to have in Manchester.
”There will be a police operation in place to ensure the safety of members of the community, and I would ask motorists visiting the city to expect delays as a result of the event and to allow extra time for their journeys."
The procession route on Saturday 14 August is likely to affect a number of roads including Yarburgh Street, Alexandra Road, Withington Road, Moss Lane West, Chichester Road, Greenheys Lane West, Boundary Lane, Booth Street West, Wilmslow Road, Great Western Street, Upper Lloyd Street, Claremont Road and Princess Road.
Motorists are reminded that Oxford Road will be closed.

Neighbourhood Policing Teams across Greater Manchester Police’s Metropolitan Division are clamping down on anti-social behaviour over the school summer holiday period.

Officers in Longsight and Ardwick have seized four off-road bikes since 1 July and arrested two people on suspicion of riding them while disqualified.

Police covering this area are also focusing patrols on Crowcroft Park, with officers working closely with parks officials to deter people from gathering in large numbers and causing a disturbance.

In addition, they are seizing illegally purchased alcohol, making regular checks at licensed premises and targeting adults who buy drink for under 18s.

Inspector Steve Palmer of the Longsight and Ardwick Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “Residents have told us that off-road bikes are a serious issue and that's why it's a priority for us. I would remind people that it is illegal to ride off-road bikes on public roads and in other public places. The only place where they can be ridden legally is on private land with the permission of the owner or at a legitimate club.

“Anyone caught riding one illegally will be given an official warning, and those who ignore the warning will have their bike seized. Vehicles will also be seized if riders have no insurance or valid documentation.”

Elsewhere, officers covering Moss Side and Hulme are running high-profile foot and bike patrols in anti-social behaviour hotspots like the Aquarius Estate. They are also visiting the homes of those previously involved in anti-social behaviour to warn them they are being monitored, and a mobile police station will visit affected areas so residents can raise any issues with police and receive crime prevention advice.

In addition, officers from the Gorton Neighbourhood Policing Team are closely monitoring the Debdale Park area and carrying out test purchases to ensure licensed premises on Hyde Road and Mount Road aren’t selling alcohol illegally.

A Hulmee explains the trickery surrounding DWP disability benefits

In the process of being built by a Hulmee (Miss_D_Fye), this site promises to help those stuck in the quagmire of trying to claim/appeal ESA, DLA and other benefits. Most of the site is free to those who register whilst for a £10 fee access to specialist documents, claim guides and help is available.

Child abusers found guilty

Nine men have been convicted for their role in the sexual exploitation of a 14-year-old girl.

The child went missing from home in Rochdale on two occasions, first on 16 February and again on 22 February 2008. The second time she was missing for 11 days - turning up in Rusholme, Manchester. When officers spoke to her she told them she had been sexually exploited by a number of men while she was missing.

Over the following weeks the girl was spoken to by a specialist team of officers. She was able to identify the places she was taken and the men who had abused her.

She had been abused by a number of different men as she went from one vulnerable situation to another. In many cases, the men she was associating with were not linked, but they did all identify the child’s vulnerability and take advantage of her.

Superintendent Paul Savill from GMP, said: “This child has been through an absolutely horrifying ordeal at the hands of these men.

“The level of abuse she has suffered is almost beyond belief. She has been treated like a commodity; beaten, threatened and sexually exploited.

“These men took advantage of her vulnerability with no regard for her wellbeing.

“I commend this young girl for her bravery in supporting this case. Even after her ordeal she was able to revisit the sites where she was abused and testify against her abusers in court. This is not easy and can often be the main obstacle we face when trying to bring prosecutions in cases of child sexual exploitation.

“In Manchester we have a specially trained team called the Protect Team who specialise in dealing with victims of child sexual exploitation. They help these young people to pursue prosecutions while coming to terms with what has happened to them and moving on with their lives.”

The Protect Team involves GMP and Manchester Children’s Services working with children’s charities to combat the issue of child sexual exploitation.

Their work involves disrupting, investigating and prosecuting offenders, while offering the support to victims and their families from a specially trained team of professionals.

The victim herself has released a statement about her ordeal: “These people exploit young girls, introduce them to prostitution, feed them drugs and alcohol and tell them they love them. I know this because it has happened to me and it has changed my life enormously. I just hope that people will be more aware of this now and will be able to prevent this from happening to other vulnerable young girls.

The victim’s parents have released the following statement: “We are very proud of our daughter for her courage in assisting Greater Manchester Police with the prosecution of these abusers who caused her such terrible harm. No family should have to endure a nightmare experience like the one we have been through. Sadly, we now know that many young and vulnerable teenaged girls are targeted, groomed and abused in this way by such offenders; we support our daughter in hoping that these successful prosecutions will send a message that will help protect other children.”

Rachel Loise, a parent support officer from the Coalition for the Removal of Pimping (CROP) said: "This violent sexual exploitation not only ruins the lives of the children and young people; the effects on the whole family are devastating - on both parents and siblings. And this can happen to any child from any family.

"CROP has supported well over 300 affected families across the UK and they come from right across the social spectrum. The manipulative methods of the men are highly sophisticated; they have all the experience - the girls and the families have none."

A spokesperson for Barnardo’s in the North West said: “Barnardo’s will continue to work to ensure that the safety of children and young people is paramount

“Exploitation such as this can ruin young people’s lives and our work with the Protect team goes a long way to ensuring support and advice for victims such as this."

Offender Details
Aftab Khan (26/01/79) of Tarporley Avenue, Fallowfield pleaded guilty to one count of controlling a child prostitute and one count of sexual activity with a child. He was sentenced to nine years in prison. This was later reduced to seven years on appeal.

Abid Khaliq (15/12/79) of Shrewsbury Street, Stretford was sentenced to eight months in prison after admitting perverting the course of justice.

Ahmed Noorzai (01/01/81) of Royce Court in Hulme was sentenced to four years in prison after he was found guilty of paying for the sexual services of a child

Mohammed Anwar Safi (01/01/79) of no fixed address was sentenced to 31 months in prison after admitting paying for the sexual services of a child

Mohammed Khan (26/06/84) of Royce Court, Hulme was sentenced to four years in prison after he was found guilty of facilitating child prostitution.

Najibullah Safi (12/08/77) of Reabrook Avenue, West Gorton was sentenced to two years in prison after admitting to sexual activity with a child.

Asad Yousaf Hassan (14/10/81) of Rivington Street, Rochdale was sentenced to two years in prison after admitting two counts of sexual activity with a child.

Mohammed Basharat (26/12/81) of Prospect Street, Rochdale was sentenced to two years in prison after he pleaded guilty to sexual activity with a child under 16.

Mohammed Atif (19/06/81) of Rivington Street, Rochdale was sentenced to two years in prison after admitting to sexual activity with a child.

Timeline of events
First Time Missing
Saturday 16 Feb
· Child is picked up in Rochdale Town Centre by Asad Hassan.

· Hassan drives to a nightclub and picks up Basharat Mohammed and Mohammed Atif.

· Three go to Basharat’s house and Hassan gives the girl alcohol she believes was spiked with ecstasy.

· The girl was sexually exploited by Hassan and Mohammed.

· The girl fell asleep and when she woke up had injuries to her hands and a hand mark around her neck. Hassan took her to the bus station and gave her some cigarettes and money for the bus.

· The girl returned home.

Second Time Missing
Friday 22 Feb
· The girl went missing in Rochdale.
Saturday 23 Feb
· The girl got the bus into Manchester, then travelled back to Rochdale where she met up with Hassan, Mohammed and Atif

· The three took her to Hollingworth Lake where they sexually exploited her.
Sunday 24 Feb
· Hassan took the girl to the bus station and she travelled into Manchester
.
· She ended up in Rusholme where she met Aftab Khan.

· Khan took her back to his house .

· At the house he gave her alcohol, cocaine and cannabis.

· The girl fell asleep. Between 3am and 4am Khan woke the girl and told her “You’re working for me now”. She knew this meant he wanted her to have sex with men for money. He told her he would hit her if she didn’t do as he said.
Monday 25 Feb
· Khan took the girl to Fairfield Street for the first time. He forced her to have sex with men for money.

· For the next five nights Khan took the girl to Fairfield Street every night and sold her to men for sex.
Friday 29 Feb
· Two plain clothes policemen patrolling on Fairfield Street stopped the girl with Khan and Abid Khaliq. The girl gave false details because she was afraid of Khan.

· The officers took the girl to the bus station so she could go home but she returned to Khan because she was afraid of him.

· Khan did not take her into the city centre again.
Monday 3 March
· Khan took the girl to Royce Court.

· Mohammed Khan paid Aftab Khan cash for Ahmed Noorzai and Mohammed Anwar Safi to sexually exploit her.

· Khan picked her up the following morning and took her back to his home.
Tuesday 4 March
· One of the police officers who had stopped the girl saw a missing appeal to trace her and realised it was the same girl he had seen with Khan and Khaliq.

· The officer informed colleagues who went to see Khaliq to find out where she was.

· They then went to Khan’s address but Khaliq had already phoned ahead and Khan had sent the girl away.

· Khan admitted to the police he had seen the girl some days earlier but said that was the last time he had seen her. He was told how old she was

· Meanwhile the girl made her way into Rusholme where she was approached by
Najibullah Safi. He took her back to his house and gave her alcohol and drugs. The girl passed out.

· The girl contacted Khan who picked her up and took her to Royce Court. Khan then sexually exploited her, despite having been told her age by the police.
Wednesday 5 March
· The girl went into Rusholme and saw Najibullah Safi again. He took her to a friend’s house.
· At the house Safi started to kiss her but she pushed him away. He then grabbed her and sexually exploited her.

· Following the attack the girl left the address and approached a couple in a car. She asked the woman if she could speak to her about “girl things”.

· Najibullah approached her, grabbed her and started to drag her along the road.

· The couple followed and when the woman managed to speak to her she said she had been raped. The police were contacted and the girl was taken to a place of safety.

A 40-year-old man has been arrested in Longsight on suspicion of rape.

During the early morning of Monday 19 July 2010, a man got into a student accommodation on Lower Park Road, Rusholme, and 19-year-old woman was raped.

GUIDANCE: Police are no longer looking for 40-year-old Paul Atta, who was wanted after a woman was raped in Rusholme.

GMP thanks the media for publicising the appeal to trace him.

Man free as two deaths are deemed to be suicide in Hulme Manchester

A mother and daughter found dead at their home may have formed a suicide pact, police believe.

The bodies of Jean Rothwell, 58, and Rachel Rothwell, 34, were discovered by Jean's husband Christopher at the family's house in Hulme, Manchester.

Greater Manchester Police are now awaiting the results of toxicology tests on the women who were found at their home in the Hulme area of the city.

Rachel was discovered in her bed and her mother was in a separate upstairs room. Police sources have revealed that there were no obvious signs of violence.

It is believed both women had been treated for mental health issues.

Mr Rothwell, 57, was last night released without charge after being arrested on suspicion of murder. Police stressed they were looking at a number of theories.

Rumours abound as to the deaths of the the two women in Hulme. I hear they were regulary visited by two young chinese people preaching christian redemption. Both women had mental health problems the last
things they would have needed would be these preachers were very fanatical and persistant.

It appears woman was found dead it the bath whilst the other was laid out on her bed. Suicide appears to be opinion of police.

All this is rumour and has yet to be comfirmed by police

As to the chinese couple. I have been unforunate enough and stupid enough to allow them enterance into my home. I found these people manipulative and liars as I allowed them to enter my home believing they were conducting a survey.
It was very difficult to get them to leave.

A £10,000 reward is being offered to anyone with information leading to the arrest of a man police want to speak to in connection with the rape of a student.

Police have taken the step of issuing a picture of 40-year-old Paul Atta in a bid to trace him.

Atta is known in the Rusholme and Moss Side areas and is known to use gyms and visit hostels in the city centre.

He is known to have links to Preston, Lancashire.

Officers want to trace him in connection with incidents during the early morning of Monday 19 July 2010.

Shortly after 4.30am on Monday 19 July 2010, police were called to Hulme Hall on Oxford Place, to a report of a burglary.

A short time later, a student was raped in her accommodation on Lower Park Road, Rusholme.

The 19-year-old woman, who was sharing the flat with two other students, was asleep in bed when a man went into her bedroom and raped her at knifepoint.

The incident was reported to police shortly after 6.15am.

Police believe the two incidents are linked.

Superintendent Stuart Barton, of GMP's Metropolitan division, said: "We need to speak to Atta urgently. If anyone knows him or his whereabouts, you must get in touch straight away.

"We're offering a £10,000 reward to anyone with information leading to his arrest.

"Think about that - all you need to do is call.

"Any information we receive will be treated sensitively and nobody need ever know who you are.

"I'd also like to appeal directly to Atta again or indeed anyone who may be supporting him at the moment - if you see or hear this, it is vital you call us."

Anyone with information as to Atta's whereabouts must call 0161 856 4245 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Toxicology tests are being carried out on the bodies found at the house in Hulme

A mother and daughter found dead at their home in Manchester may have made a suicide pact, detectives believe.

Police said one line of inquiry was that the pair took their own lives before being discovered at their home in Holdgate Close, Hulme, on Tuesday.

Toxicology tests are currently being carried out on the bodies of Jean Rothwell, 58, and daughter Rachel, 34.

Mrs Rothwell's husband Christopher, 57, was arrested on suspicion of murder. He has since been released without charge.

'Traces of medication'

Manchester Mental Health Trust confirmed the two women were service users and the trust would be carrying out its own internal investigation as a "matter of course".

A police spokesman said: "There were traces of medication found at the scene and a suicide pact is one line of inquiry.

"We did arrest a 57-year-old man, but no further action will be taken against him at this time.

"There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the deaths and we are waiting for the results of the toxicology tests."

A Man was being quizzed by police today after his wife and daughter were found dead at their family home.Cancer sufferer Christopher Rothwell, 57 — described as the "perfect neighbour" — was held after cops found the bodies of his 57-year-old wife Jean and daughter Rachel, 34, following a 999 call.

The tragedy occurred at 7.20pm last night.

Greater Manchester Police are investigating how the two women died but sources said there were "no obvious signs of violence" in the house in a neat cul de sac.

Mrs Rothwell was said to have complained about wanting to move from the £120,000 semi the family shared in Hulme, Manchester.

Her husband, who had had an operation for bowel cancer, had wanted to stay in the area.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the bodies of two women were found at a house.

Police were called to the address Holdgate Close in Hulme, Manchester, at around 7.30pm yesterday.

The bodies of two women, aged 57 and 34, were found.

A post-mortem examination is due to take place today to establish a cause of death.

A 57-year-old man present at the address was arrested on suspicion of murder.
