The interstate’s closure created a detour to U.S. 40, which went through Steamboat Springs, Colorado. We had many vehicles going through downtown Steamboat due to this breathtaking rockslide. A tremendous rockslide on I-70, which was near Glenwood Springs smashed through a bridge and dumped boulders the size of tractor trailers on the highway, closing a 17-mile stretch of the road. The slide struck at about midnight just west of the Hanging Lake Tunnell in Glenwood Canyon. The collapse caused major problems for truckers and other motorists, who had to travel 200 miles to avoid the slide. They pronounced that as many as 20 boulders, ranging from 3 feet to 10 feet in diameter, his the interstate, Colorado Department of Transportation estimated that the largest rock weighed 66 tons and some were as big as semi trucks. Thankfully no one was injured or on this section of the interstate at that time.

We woke up early yesterday morning to hit the trails up on rabbit ears pass. A 30 minute drive east of town we were all excited to try something a bit different. Taking the day away from skiing we went snowmobiling. I would recommend this to anyone visiting town, even if only here for a short weekend. Jumping on the small sleds we were privileged to take a small tour led by one of my friends. Beginning on the groomed path, we all quickly became accustomed to the dimensions and speed of our sleds and were cruising around 40mph in no time. After gathering ourselves we cruised off trail and glided through some fresh snow, breaking trail for much of the remainder of the ride. Stopping only a few times to pull sleds out of the deep powder they got stuck in, we had a great time. All quite tired when we reached the car at the end of the tour everyone was all smiles, recounting the deep powder turns and the few small jumps we hit, giving even us beginners a taste of flying.

Full moons are typically seen with moderate interest and for the cramp they put on stargazing. In Steamboat, for many, the light gives us the ability to extend the day and continue enjoying the activities we love, long into the night.

I spent this past Friday night back on the mountain climbing up, really earning the downhill turns that were to follow later. Skins, for those unfamiliar, are long strips of synthetic material that are stuck to the bottom of skis allowing you to climb up the mountain. Perfect for side and back country hikes they are also super for late night, moon hikes. Getting out just as the moon was rising it was stunningly bright for 8pm. The climb took me a bit longer than it should have but the solitary climb in the dark was a refreshing break after a long week. Upon reaching the top i stopped to relax for a while. A combination of exhaustion and the beautiful view of downtown were both overwhelming.

Having reached the top fairly early in the evening i beat the cats, and skied down before they had the chance to make perfect the perfect lines of corduroy. Getting home i was quick to jump in bed to get a bit of sleep before getting back out to ski in a few short hours…

Eddie Bauer chose to have his 2010 Christmas catalog photo shoot here in Steamboat Springs, Colorado for the beauty and a vibrant western culture – all surrounded by some of the most beautiful mountain scenery in the world. We don’t blame him for choosing such a beautiful winter wonderland for such an event. The Eddie Bauer photo team took photos at the Steamboat (More) barn, among other wonderful places here in Steamboat. This is a tremendous opportunity for Steamboat Springs and we all look forward to more of these opportunities in the future.

With excitement in the air for our US Olympic Nordic Combined team, well over 100 people crowded into into the top level of the lodge at the base of Howelsen Hill getting ready to cheer on the Americans and local Steamboat men Johnny Spillane and Todd Lodwick. Every one was ready at 3 for the race to begin and crowded around 2 tvs that were broadcasting a live internet feed of the race. Starting a mere 2 seconds behind the Finns after the ski jumping, the US team finished the first leg still in first but the rest fo the field had closed the gap.

A race consistating of 4 teammates each racing a 5k, each athlete raced for about 15minutes, a long, solid effort. Without a live tv feed, we were required to use the internet to stream the video, which was a bit spotty. The chorus of groans when the feed went out was louder only when the race momentarily cut out to watch the skier cross final; while a fun race it was not an event anyone was particluarly interested in watching at this moment. But it was a gutsy race for the American team, Todd Lodwick was the second leg, and spent his leg feeding off the Australian leader, switching the lead for first no less than 3 times. Johnny Spillane struggled a bit to finish his leg and put Bill Demong in position to chase the leader. Making up for a 15 second gap over the first half of his leg, the entire crowd in Howelsen was standing and screaming as the two traded spots for the gold position. In the final 200m Demong was out-kicked by the opposing Austrian. But a Silver medal, awesome! A great effort by the Americans and a few of the Steamboat locals!

More snow made its way to Mt. Werner and Steamboat and everyone in town was ready to hit the mountain hard. Spending Saturday hiking up the mountain, i had the opportunity to see many areas previously undiscovered. A cool new way to enjoy the ski mountain. Today having 6 fresh new inches, the mountain looked beautiful in the morning light, and i couldn’t deny its calling. Having the rare opportunity to ski with friends whose work schedule is opposite of my own made the day that much more enjoyable.

We spent the morning rolling through the side country outside of the Pony Express, fully enjoying the blessing of new powder. Enjoying a nice ‘German Bratwurst’ we took a short break at 4 Points, chowing down with speed, eager to get back on the fresh lines that still needed to be run. The afternoon we camped out by a great rock over in Morningside. Somewhere between 15-20ft we made a five or so loops through, seeing who could launch the furthest off, with the most style. Not winning was almost more fun, watching some great airs and grabs. Spending the day ripping from first chair to last i just woke up from a much needed nap and am looking forward to more powder skiing later this week!

As dusk approached last night i found myself driving up toward Dry Lake Campground getting mentally prepared for the upcoming run. Having done this run numerous times in the warm, dry and comfortable summer months is one thing, but I have only been up here once for hiking in the winter. And that was to get my Christmas Tree. Keeping our lights off on our way out, we followed a previously hiked trail for about a half-mile. After that we veered off and began breaking our own trail. Significantly more tiring, we switched the leader out often. When i took over at the front, i quickly wished i were skiing down the hill we were attempting to climb. With powder up to our hips at points it was challenging to say the least.

But when we finally arrived at our turn point, we all stopped together and looked down the valley in front of us. Not using lights for the past half-hour we had grown accustomed to the dark and all just stood, looking ahead in silence. Switching our lights on the journey back was significantly easier, following our own tracks and knowing where we were heading made it a much quicker trek. A fun adventure that will not quickly be forgotten. Both the soreness in my legs and the memories of the beautiful snow-laden valley are sure to last quite a while.

Estatic about his Olympic performance, Spillane says that his success has only just sunk in. ‘The medals ceremony was a hell of an experience, and it’s something that I will never forget.’ He continues stating that, ‘It was fun to see everyone out there,’ Spillane said. ‘This crowd has a hometown feeling. There were so many people out there cheering, and I knew a bunch of them.’ Not done yet, Spillane will join teammates Todd Lodwick and Bill Demong to compete in the Nordic Combined Team event later in the Olympics.

Each day got a bit better. Friday was the first powder day in a little bit. Saturday it just kept dumping. And yesterday, the skies parted, the snow was plentiful and the bright blue from above was blinding. A great weekend on the slopes and spent in the back-country.

Its seems as though each time we head to Buff, the snow and conditions are better and better. Friday we reached the top and cruised through 14+ inches of fresh snow. It was one of those days that passes in a blur but you know that each moment, each turn was excellent.

Saturday started with snow lightly falling as the morning began and the mountain was busy. Great to see people out and enjoying the fresh new snow. Wanting to dodge the crowds i spent the morning with a few friends hitting a few runs by Elkhead, where untouched snow seemed to last all morning. The afternoon i met up with a different crew who were taking the fresh snow as a sign to go big. Working on throwing a few backflips one buddy landed on his face, staining the previously virginal snow crimson red. But not wanting to miss anytime cruising through fresh terrain, we were quickly back on our feet, trying to go bigger than before.

And yesterday, you really felt like you were flying. With over 2 feet of light, fluffy, Champagne pow pow, we started the day on Dad’s. While one of our favorite runs to ski, the pitch wasn’t nearly steep enough and we found ourselves quickly leaving in search of steeper terrain. Never a bad problem, we were more than happy to move on. We quickly found another run and spent the rest of the afternoon just cruising down, floating just below the top of the snow. Our first bluebird day while on Buff Pass, everything shone, glistened and looked spectacular. A fantastic way to spend a Valentines Day in Steamboat.

While describing Nordic Combined as an ‘Oddball Event,’ it was exciting to see Todd Lodwick, Johnny Spillane and Billy Demong featured in the Wall Street Journal yesterday. Hailing the Nordic Combined team as an integral part of the chance for the comeback of the US Winter Olympians, the author Matthew Futterman, presents a compelling story on why non-traditional events could be the turning point in US international competitiveness. The story focuses on Tom Steitz and his strong influence and determination to change the traditional solitude many distance athletes were accustomed to, to creating a ’system of constant oversight and accountability that was uncompromising and almost Orwellian in its outlook.’ Emphasizing a team atmosphere Steitz made everyone move to Steamboat Springs to continue training throughout the year instead of periodic training camps. This switch can be credited as one of the main components in helping many of the members of the current Olympic team improve key aspects of Nordic Combined For the complete account, check out the story below -

Billy Demong and Todd Lodwick are fronting the US Nordic combined teams hopes at gaining Olympic medals in nordic combined. Both credit their recent success to their renewed attitude taken after they took time away from the sport. ‘Lodwick says he needed his two-year retirement to realize how much he enjoys the journey — a perspective Demong gained seven years ago, after a harrowing swimming pool accident in 2002 sidelined him for a season.’

Both skiers have embraced a larger workload than previous years and are reaping the benefits. ‘Demong, a high school cross country runner, also took up cycling after the 2006 Games for offseason training. He entered dozens of bike races the last two summers. Learning bike racing tactics has helped him in cross-country skiing, he says, and the low-impact nature of cycling helps him put in more training miles than he can running.’ In addition to doing more work, Lodwick has changed his outlook on the running and building a base. He states that ‘before, it was something I had to do. I had to go run. I had to go roller ski. I had to get on my bike. I had to go to the gym. Those are things I get to do now.’

But when it comes down to the all the competitions both athletes have been involved in over the years, they have the same outlook on the Olympics. “You look back at people’s careers,’ Lodwick says, ‘and regardless of how many World Cup victories they have, the question always arises, ‘Does he have any medals?” All of Steamboat will surely be cheering for him and Billy in a few short weeks in Vancouver.

Being able to cruise the groomers, relax and enjoy the mountain, it was definitely a day of leisurely skiing. And with the warm temps and the beautiful weather everyone appeared to have the same idea as myself at the end of the day; continue relaxing and enjoy the Apres Ski at Slopeside. Great to see a huge crowd outside and enjoying the great weather. And with the snow dumping down as i look out the window, it looks like the blue skies are gone, but a welcome change!

We were able to skip out of work for a bit this morning and enjoy a little bit of powder up on Buff Pass. Only a few short miles outside of downtown Steamboat, Buff Pass regularly competes for the most snow in Colorado. Getting out early, we were excited to be one of the first cars at the top of the pass. With a slightly bigger group than last time, six, we had to have both snow mobiles running with one person being pulled behind each. But all that meant was more people to ski with on the way down. We began the morning with a few runs at a familiar spot, but it took us a few runs to get used to how much the landscape had changed with an additional 24 inches since the last time. But the new snow painted an entirely new landscape, changing previous falls to small bumps and opening bigger jumps.

As the morning continued we moved on to a steeper a longer run. An awesome change. The deepest, consistent powder many of us had seen all year, our whoops and hollers could surely be heard off in the distance. At one point we looked up after the completion of a run and saw a dogsled press by in the distance, a cool reminder that Buff Pass is open for a range of activities. Finishing just before lunch and returning to the office it reminds me why i live in Steamboat. The opportunity to enjoy activities I love at any point of the day, week or year.

Snow has returned to Steamboat Springs. But because of the a short hiatus, today was even sweeter carving through the fluffy white stuff many of us have missed so much. Starting the day at 830, the gondy line was out the gates, with people carrying fat, fat skis, eager to begin the day. The early morning runs were some of the best. Hitting un-tracked lines down Shadows and Closets seemed to never get repetitive. The snow was continuing to fall, almost mocking the fact that 8 inches was reported at the days beginning. By mid-morning the snowbanks were a foot at the shallowest.

A bit of wind kept the day interesting. Storm Peak remained closed throughout the day, making traversing around the mountain a bit different than usual. Spending much of the afternoon on Bar UE was a change. The slow, two person lift was a peaceful reprieve between the long powder-filled runs.

But the best part of the day were the handful of runs we took off of Morningside lift. With enough snow, we were able to huck off of some of the rocks and ledges we have been looking at the past few weeks. While all our landings were not perfect, we were met with a comfortable landing with each fall. The two runs we took off of East Face and North St. Pats, can only be described as superb. All that could be heard from our group were yells, screams and a ton of laughter as we cruised through banks of snow up to our chests, with a few shots that went over our heads. Definitely not what many of us were expecting this morning, but a welcome surprise.

Not wanting the day to come to a close, we continued to ride until the end, reaching the base at 4. To top the day off we were just in time for the last of the courtesy hot chocolate and cider offered by the mountain ambassadors; the warm drinks hitting the right spot. One of those great days where the end is met with fantastic exhaustion and a yearning for more. More snow, more skiing and more memories that can come close to matching those of the day past.

The 36th annual cowboy downhill stampede was a success this year and finished as the snow began to fall. The cowboy downhill is comprised of 2 races. ‘The first, participants race through a dual slalom course on skis or a snowboard, hit a jump, lasso a Steamboat Ambassador and saddle a horse before crossing the finish line. The second is an all-out, every-man-for-himself race to the bottom of Stampede…The Cowboy Downhill began 36 years ago when Billy Kidd and Larry Mahan, a six-time All-Around World Champion cowboy, decided to put a few pro rodeo stars on skis.’

With some crazy falls, awesome cowboy garb and lots of yelling and screaming, the atmosphere was awesome. The base area was packed with people making it difficult to move, but fun to be a part of. With the concert beginning as the snow began to fall, it added to the atmosphere, livening everyone up just a bit more. Reckless Kelly played a great show, bringing the crowd together and getting everyone excited, concluding a great Tuesday night! Hope to see everyone just as excited for the upcoming Winter Carnival in Steamboat!

While the weather in Steamboat has not provided us with the amount of snow we have become accustomed to after the past few years, there still are stashes of fresh snow out there. You just have to look a bit harder than usual. I went up to Buff Pass with a few friends last Thursday and couldn’t believe it had taken me this long to ski over there. Buff Pass is an area a few miles outside of downtown Steamboat that is locally renowned as a great place for backcountry skiing

We took two snowmobiles up the pass and were pleasantly surprised to see 6-12 in of untouched fresh powder covering the line we wanted to ski. Despite the lack of snow we had a great time skiing all morning. Being my first time skiing with a sled, i was just as excited to get pulled back up to the top of the run (on a rope behind the snowmobile) as i was to ski down. Overall a great time. And with snow in the forecast for 8 out of the next 10 days, we will hopefully get some more powder skiing in soon!

I stopped by the Strawberry Park Hot Springs with a few friends last night. It was quite cold when we got there, so changing into our suits in the tiny tepee on the side of the springs was a quick affair, and we jumped right in. Making the mistake of jumping in the hottest of the hot springs first we were all a bit overwhelmed at the sudden jump in temperature, but it was a change in the right direction. We slowly waded over to the cooler of the two hot springs and relaxed in the cooler of the two, quite warm hot springs. Always a great atmosphere in the winter, the snow sits in large banks only feet away, while you relax in the natural hot springs. On a dare one friend proceeded to jump into the stream running parallel to the springs. Hovering somewhere around 40 degrees, he quickly found himself back in the hot spring trying to regain his breath. A place you should stop on your next visit to Steamboat Springs.

Steamboat Springs is soon to be crowded by music fans for the next few weeks. With two music festivals coming into town, there is sure to be a show or two stopping by Steamboat in the next few days you might be interested in. The first, ‘MusicFest’ is a concert series focused toward out-of-town travelers. The tickets are sold in ’ski travel packages, [which] include(s) lodging, lift tickets and concert access. Those tickets sold out in record time for this year’s MusicFest, festival organizer John Dickson, of Dickson Productions.’ In its 25th year, this festival has been successful throughout its tenure and looks to have another strong showing this year with many of the featured bands coming from Austin, Texas.

Ski Jam follows, beginning next week on January 14th, and is set-up as a concert series focused on both bringing in a large outside crowd and giving locals a few concerts to enjoy. This series features a few big name bands, with ‘The Wailers’ and ‘Keller Williams’ headlining events. With both concerts set to go off, Steamboat is sure to be excited and in great spirits after the holiday season.

Working as a ski instructor for Steamboat Resorts i was given the opportunity this year to be a part of the torch light ceremony on the mountain this year. For those unfamiliar with the tradition, at 7 pm, with the mountain in darkness, the ski instructors form the current year, and a short time later change their formation to approaching year. The numbers are illuminated on the mountain with 2 flares given to each instructor.

By far the coolest part of the night was the initial decent to get to where the flares were initially lit. With a rare blue moon lighting our way, we cruised down toward ‘See Me’ with only the moonlight as our guide. Fresh corduroy coupled with the almost daylight conditions, the large group of motley dressed ski and snowboard instructors cranked down to the stopping point. After the 10 was formed the group disbanded in a uniform decent, as we all carved back and forth in a cohesive line. As we cruised past Edgemont, i noticed people were lining the sides cheering us on. As we reached the bottom and took our final bow, extinguishing our flares as we bent over, the fireworks began behind us. A great way to start 2010!

Having family in town often leads me to eat in many places i do not throughout the rest of the year. With my mom, dad, and sister we rode up the gondola last night at 6pm, bundled in our blankets, waiting anxiously for our sleigh ride we were very excited to finally get to the top and ride across to Ragnars. Completing the experience, snow began to gently fall as the sleigh began to move. I can not say enough about the quality of the dinner. Savoring my duck, i was still eating as the desserts were being passed to the tables around us. Riding back down the gondola was a new experience for me, and with the town lit up against the black sky, it was a beautiful sight and great end to the evening.

I hope everyone had a fantastic holiday! Santa came a bit early this year and left the Steamboat residents and visitors with the gift we have all been asking for, SNOW! With 11 inches on Christmas Eve the gondola line was packed almost out to Gondola Joes early that morning. Along with new runs like, 2 o’clock and shadows being open, everyone was able to find those stashes of powder we have been dreaming about since the season ended last April.

Myself, having family in town for the holidays has made me once again appreciate the small nuances of Steamboat that can often be overlooked by someone living here year-round. Having family constantly oooing and ahhing at small things like the gorgeous view heading up Buff Pass or just the simple fact that everyone in town is so open and nice, i am happy to be a Steamboat resident. Plus having family around at the holidays is always fun, whether just hanging out at the end of a tough ski day or joking around at the difficulty some have at getting their ski boots on, everything is always more enjoyable. Hope your holidays were equally as relaxing and fun as mine and I’m hoping Santa decides to take his spring break in Steamboat as well, bringing back more of that fluffy powder

Another beautiful day in Steamboat Springs as we all enjoyed bluebird skies and some groomed runs up on Mt. Werner. Venturing around the mountain, a friend and I were able to find some spots with 12+ in of untouched snow. Since the base was not too deep, we were quite careful to avoid the still protruding rocks, bushes and trees. I still managed to take a few spills though. A great day on the mountain and a lot of fun to find some hidden spots. Rumor is that storms are supposed to stop through tomorrow, just in time for the holiday crowds.

I finally made it out this weekend with some friends in search of that perfect Christmas Tree. We decided to search on top of Buff Pass toward Soda Mtn. We quickly learned that snowshoes probably would have been quite helpful as we sunk into some snowbanks up to our hips. The tree that i eventually picked was, of course, down in a valley. Because of work schedules, it was nearing dark as we finally cut down the tree and started hauling it back toward the car. Despite our poor timing and ill-prepared supplies, it was a great time and we will know what to expect for next years trip. The Griswolds made it look so easy! With the tree fully decorated and in the house, Christmas truly feels just around the corner.

The NY Times released an article today reviewing a recent article published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine about what makes certain individuals more prone to ski injuries. Citing the change in equipment, injuries have and continue to decrease. The best advice that comes out of the article is to have your equipment properly checked before you ski and to stay within your limits on the slopes.

The most interesting point that arose in the article was their attempt at debunking the commonly touted idea that snowboarders are more dangerous. The article states that “’most people think that snowboarders whack into skiers…but it’s completely the other way around,’ a phenomenon related to how each group falls. ‘Snowboarders stop abruptly,’ Shealy says, their boards biting into the snow. ‘Skiers slide,’ he says, often into a downed snowboarder.” While still leaving many aspects of snowboarding undiscussed, an interesting comment none-the-less. Even more interesting than the article itself are the comments below. Take a look for yourself and remember to be safe this winter!

Phys Ed: How to Avoid Injury on the Slopes

Yesterday was a great day! My first full day of skiing all season had my legs a bit tuckered as i slowly stepped out of my skis at the end of the day. But with the new terrain open i couldn’t pass up the opportunity to ski until the lifts were gradually shutting down. With Four Points in addition to Storm Peak, and new trails opening with each passing day, we were able cruise fluidly around the mountain. It is a good feeling when you are debating at the end of the day if you should take the Gondola back down because you’ve pushed yourself on every run.

Getting to the bottom there was a large crowd over by the ski storage area. Walking over i was a bit surprised to see Santa and a few of his Reindeer had taken a short stop in Steamboat a bit early this year. I had never seen reindeer before, so i was excited to see them up close!

The mountain is beginning to expand. Now with terrain open from top-to-bottom, riders have their choice between 35 trails with more to come soon. I had the chance to get out early this morning and was among one of the first chairs up the newly opened section of mountain.

It was quite cold when i got to the top. Rumor was spreading as i continued to ski throughout the day that temps at the top of Storm Peak were reaching as low as -25 F with the wind chill. With Buddy’s Run as the run open off the top of Storm Peak there were quite a few people exploring the newly opened terrain. This proved to be quite useful today the visibility quite limited. Great fun to get out on a new run and with Thunderhead Express chair being prepped for tomorrow things are only getting better!

With a majority of the icy spots covered, early this morning Mt. Werner had the first of hopefully many powdery days. The temperature was bitter cold and only got chillier as you skied down the mountain and through the always-running snow-making-machines. I was grateful for my laziness over the past few days, and my short beard stubble provided a small bit of reprieve for my face on this chilly morning. While i thought my legs had become accustomed to the wear and tear of skiing, i had forgotten the extra impact that come with days like today. Powder, while what everyone dreams about, requires a bit more work to gracefully carve through. The beginning of every year, skiing, to me at-least, is only remembered in those short flashes of adrenaline rushes, and epic, epic days. I always seem to forget the fitness and work involved with pushing around the snow. Looks like I will just have to get a bit more fit to fully enjoy the entirety of this winter, but am entirely ready to embrace this challenge!

The next week looks like it could be a big one. “The two storm systems expected to hit Steamboat Springs this weekend could blanket Mount Werner with more than a foot of snow by Tuesday afternoon.” While only a few runs are currently opening on the mountain, the conditions are improving each day. The snow-making at the resort has been great this year, keeping all the runs that are open in awesome shape. While officially “Steamboat Ski & Resort Corp. spokeswoman Loryn Kasten said the ski area will wait until after the storms have passed to make any decisions about opening additional terrain,” rumor is the next few chairs to open up will be 4-Points and Storm Peak, leading up to Buddy’s Run. I saw Thunderhead running as well today, so we’ll just have to wait and see what comes next!

Getting up early this morning i was excited to see the snow slowly drifting down to the ground and, most importantly, sticking. Getting up on the mountain i learned that the snow had only recently begun falling, leaving good conditions. The runs had been groomed early, leaving a small layer of fresh powder on top of most of the runs. While the fresh snow got pushed around a bit by the end of the day, it gave us all a reminder of what skiing in a bit of fresh snow is like. Looking forward to the first big snow!

I took a small detour and drove around the different developments and enjoyed how many have already hung Christmas lights in trees surrounding their lodges and townhomes. While waiting for the snow to pile-up here in Steamboat, the Christmas lights are a nice reminder of what is around the corner. Hope everyone had a fantastic Thanksgiving weekend.

The day finally arrived. After months of counting down to the first chair ride, opening day is here. A unique day in the season, anyone interested in skiing, season pass-holders or not, must purchase a ticket with proceeds going to the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club. Arriving as the lifts began to shuttle people up i was surprised at the relativly small crowd, only about 100 people, waiting for the lifts to begin. Despite the small numbers their cheers seemed to carry as the first group of people were shuttled up the mountain. The skiing was great, especially for opening day. With a few blacks and blues open it was awesome to get warmed-up on for the rest of the season. Christie Lift was the main chair today, but rumor is the Gondola is supposed to open tomorrow. As the sun began to peek out, the lift line suddenly became quite busy and I found myself standing behind a outside the maze, at the end of a rather large lift line. Looks like Steamboat decided to sleep in and wait for the blue-bird sky! Working for a little bit this afternoon, but more photos to come later!

I couldn’t wait for opening day in Steamboat. So this morning i woke up early and tackled the 2.5 hour drive down to A-basin. Despite the early start, many of the parking lots were full and i was forced into the back of one of the upper lots. Walking to the mountain, many people were hanging in the parking lot, discussing the upcoming day and season. The mountain itself had a run open from top to bottom, letting you get a great early season long ride in. Super fun to be back on the snow again! Only 3 days left before skiing is ready right in our backyard!

While a bit early for some, The Routt National Forest ranger offices are officially open for people looking to get their Christmas Tree early this season. Tree permits are available at $10 a piece, and can be picked up at one of five locations around Routt County. While initially might be tempted to pull your tree by a trail-head or along-side the road, the US Forest Service asks that you refrain and instead go deeper into the woods for that perfect x-mas tree. So strap on your snowshoes, bundle-up and get your family together, this is a great opportunity for some good-old-fashion family bonding. If you need some inspiration, just think of how much fun the Griswold family had!

For more information on where to pick up a permit near you call – 970.638.4516.

The new owners, PowdrCorp, are one of the leading resort owners and operators in the United States, and say that business will continue through this winter as usual. The sale is scheduled to finalize in December.

“Intrawest was acquired in 2006 by Fortress Investment Group of New York. The company has acknowledged financial issues over the past few years and the sale of Copper Mt., a good asset in the center of Colorado Ski Country, had been rumored to be on the block. Powdr, already a major player in the ski industry, just upped their profile to an even higher peak.”

If you haven’t already been getting excited for ski season, now is definitley the time. Just looking outside as everything is white gets me excited. But now that the snow is here, and you are constantly wishing you were floating down through 12 in of pow in the backcountry what can you do?

Watch ski movies – Always a favorite, whether you are watching the newest Poor Boyz Production or an old school movie with Glen Plake and his infamous mohawk, anything that involves riding is great. I now have a movie playing in the background as I wake up before work, as I make dinner, really at any point I’m at home.

Head to other spots in Co- I know that this site is mainly dedicated to how amazing Steamboat is, but our location within Colorado is also a great part of living here. Just a short drive away you can head to A-Basin, Copper, or Loveland. If your really excited for early season skiing, take the 5hr drive from Steamboat to Wolf Creek, where currently 100% of the mountain is open.

Subscribe to a podcast – A cool option if your looking for very current updates on the ski world. Personally I’m a huge fan of ‘Snowfix,’ a ski podcast based out of England, but there are tons out there. Just go into your i-tunes and search ’ski’ or ’snowboard’ or whatever your looking for. There are some that haven’t been updated in forever, but just click around, there are some fun podcasts out there.

Wear your boots as much as possible around the house – Perhaps this is just me, but hey, I’m pumped.

With temperature lows scheduled to stay in the teens for the next week it appears as though the snow is here for good. Awesome!

Snow has come back to Steamboat. While not as dry and light of snow as we will surely hope for later this year, it is a great base layer, giving the valley and mountain a beautiful covering. Today’s snow is also great for making those perfect snowballs. The only letdown on the day is that my cruiser unfortunately got left outside and took a big hit. I’ll take the wet bike though, hopefully I wont be needing it for a long while. And with it still coming down hard early this morning, things are looking good!

Before moving to Steamboat, the weather really only determined how many layers I would wear and if I would bike to work. In Steamboat, perhaps only more noticeable than other cities, lifestyles take dramatic shifts with the sudden changes of the weather. While fall hit early in town, cyclical weather patterns have delayed the winter from setting in for good.

Yesterday, I took an extended lunch break to enjoy biking up Emerald Mtn. A great way to break up the day in the office. The service road leading up to the quarry was rock solid from the cool night temperatures, making for a great ride up. While much of the single-track off to the side is still a bit wet, it is awesome to get out and enjoy biking on the mountain this late in the year. Stopping to talk to a neighbor half-way up, I learned that the single-track on Lower Bear is still very dry due to its southern orientation. Hoping to get out there before Friday when the temps are supposed to reach back down into the 30s. Will be sure to post some more pictures if i make it out that direction!

An article in the November issue of Outside Magazine shows a small insight into the lives of few Steamboat residents and what attracted them to such a unique town. Beginning with Todd Lodwick, the article describes the competitive drive seen in so many of Steamboat’s athletes that helps them become competitive on the Olympic level. Lodwick, a third generation local, took full advantage of the hundreds of miles of trails and roads that were right outside his door to help him win two gold medals at the World Championships last year. The article also features Adam Spector and discusses the path that led him from working on a fish farm to becoming the national sales manager at the local business Honey Stinger. His summer days often begin with a 14 mile commute across singletrack on his mountain bike; winter activities involve skinning up the ski mountain during lunch breaks. Not bad lifestyles, and these are just a few examples! Almost everyone in Steamboat tries to take advantage of the beautiful natural setting we live in. This article features a few more locals as well. Check out the link below.

For those who have never had the opportunity to visit Steamboat at the end of October, Halloween is celebrated a bit differently. While not a large town in population, the town is geographically very spread-out, making door to door trick-or-treating a bit difficult for many. As a solution Lincoln Ave. closes down from 5-7 and stores downtown replace houses as candy-stops. And everyone comes. Lincoln gets so crowded it becomes difficult to move. Children and adults alike are dressed to the nines, with almost everyone dressed up. My favorite costumes included people dressed as the swine flu, the Geico pile of money and the groups of kids dressed in their cowboy/cowgirl gear. I had a great time just wandering around town, taking in the great costumes, atmosphere and, of-course, candy. Hope yours was equally as enjoyable!

Steamboat as a whole is working together to help improve both the trails used for mountain biking and increase events held in town. Focusing on incorporating new Freeriding trails, different groups within the community have already begun discussions on where and what the trails will look like. The addition of freeriding trails would incorporate a newer style of downhill riding with obstacles such as “jumps, drops, elevated wooden plank bridges, rock features, teeter-totters and more.” The Routt Country Riders are working together with Ski Corp and the Forest Service on including these new trails on the mountain as well as Buff and Rabbit Ears Pass. Along with new trails a new LIVESTRONG ride is in the works for next August. This ride will not be a race but instead looks to be an “epic ride along the Divide Trail from Dumont Lake to the ski area.” It is encouraging to see the development of the trails followed by articles in both The Steamboat Pilot and The Denver Post.

One of the major draws for improving Steamboat’s trail system are the positive economic benefits. With the addition of new trails and events, biking could, in-turn “exceed the influence of Triple Crown Sports’ summer baseball and softball tournaments in Steamboat, with a fraction of the negative impacts and controversy.” Stay tuned, as an avid biker I am very interested in the possibility of expanding the trail system in Steamboat and will keep you updated as planning hopefully shifts to development next summer.

Hike or Run- With the leaves down and the temperatures beginning to drop, getting out for an run or hike is often a great afternoon or day activity. If the snow happens to fall it only adds to the experience. Heading out to Mad Creek or even Spring Creek, the trails are often empty allowing you to enjoy the scenery. Make sure to bring plenty of layers, you never know what the weather will bring!

Bike- Whether this involves heading over to Howelsen to cruise around some of the single-track, taking a day-long trip on your road bike along River Rd, or riding your cruiser down the Core Trail, everyone can get out and enjoy the fall weather on their bikes.

Visit the Hot Springs- Enjoying the cooling fall temps, trips up to the Hot Springs are often great ways to spend a fall evening. As the sun sets, temperatures drop, and the snow-flakes begin to fall, you never want to get out of the hot water. With smaller crowds, you can often get one of the hot spring pools all to yourself!

Enjoying the Local Concerts- The concerts don’t end with the summer concert series, but continue indoors throughout Steamboat. Mainly located in bars and restaurants throughout town, there are some talented acts that are brought into town and many more who live and preform right here in Steamboat.

Get Stoked for the Winter- There is no shortage of planning, shopping or checking the weather report that can be done. Or if you are free, stop by one of the many Steamboat Ski Movie Showings. With films from Teton Gravity, Warren Miller and even some talented locals, there is always something to be done for the upcoming season.

But this is just my list, feel free to add any of your favorite things to in Steamboat, I would love to hear some things that keep you busy during the fall!

Coupled with the forecast for the next few days things are looking good. The cold weather is here to stay, with the temperatures only looking to reach mid-40s the rest of the week. The forecast for tonight is calling for upwards of 19 in of snow on the mountain, continuing on through all-day tomorrow. This would be the first significant snow accumulation in the Valley and people throughout town can’t stop talking about the exciting possibility. Ski season is just around the corner!

Gaining more national recognition, Steamboat was recently mentioned in the USA Today for its fantastic and great place to own a second residence. The author shares nothing but positive sentiments for the town, praising the Champagne powder and the tendency for Steamboat to get hit hard with large snow storms. He also mentions the allure of Old Town and how the Western design and helps complete the ski town atmosphere. These features, along with reasonably priced real-estate, are why Steamboat is a great resort destination compared to other over-crowded and over-priced resorts. Great exposure for Steamboat! Take a look at the article, link posted below.

I got this photo from one of my neighbors yesterday. It appears as though these three moose wandered into their backyard to enjoy a light snack on the flowers and brush. Earlier this summer I was out on my bike riding down the Yampa Core Trail and coming around a corner I almost hit a baby moose head-on. I think he was just as surprised as myself. Not originally from Steamboat these encounters with wildlife still throw me off my guard a bit, but are more than welcome. Just another one of the unexpected surprises living in Steamboat brings into daily life.

The hypotheses about the winter snowfall have begun. This year is an El Nino year, further fueling the speculation as to how this will affect the snow-fall on the mountain. The good news for skier and boarders is that “the last El Niño year resulted in more than 400 inches of snow. That year, 2005-06, weather patterns dumped 432 inches of snow at the midway point on Mount Werner.” The Pilot also reports the recent change in weather as promising as well. “The 0.52 [in. of rain] this morning is the greatest 24-hour total since May 3.” What this winter will bring is anyone’s guess. We can only hope for the best!

The day was a bit overcast, but this did not deter the many people I saw out walking, running or even fly-fishing along the Core Trail. As I jogged along I noticed these fishermen, each separated by the bends in the river, quietly enjoying their afternoon. A very cool feeling I’m sure, with each fishermen having the river seemingly to himself. I couldn’t help but think how great it is to see people outside, enjoying different aspects of Steamboat after a day at work. Everyone has their own ways to unwind after a day at the office, getting out and enjoying what the Yampa Valley has to offer.

Many great memories are formed with family and friends huddling around the fire at night, discussing the best ski runs for tomorrow. (I’m starting to get excited already!)

This year however, there are more than the traditional incentives to be in Ski Town USA at the end of December. Announced yesterday, US freestyle and nordic skiers will have a winner-take-all shot at making the 2010 Olympic Team. On December 23-24, a total of 5 Olympic Team spots will be available for the taking. And after the events of the day, “the party continues after the awards are made on Dec. 23 with a night of live music and celebration in the heart of the mountain village.” So come on out and catch the opportunity to see future Olympians compete!

Enjoying the comradery of the local running group, I spent tonight pushing up the single-track in the meadows at Howelsen Hill. The cyclical weather continues in Steamboat, today featuring temperatures in the 60’s. Warm enough to go back to the summer dress style of just a t-shirt and shorts. Stopping mid-way up to re-gather the group, we all turned toward Mt. Werner. The sun was setting, leaving a pink-hue decorating the east side of the Yampa Valley. Noticing the top of Soda Mountain, still capped in snow, and hearing the weather report for the rest of the week, the weather cycle is set to continue. I continue to enjoy the unpredictable nature of Steamboat’s fall season. Vacillating between the warmth and comfort of the summer and the anticipation of fluffy powder, each day is new. Different weather, different adventures.

Launching a new website, Ski Corp. is hoping this new venue will provide a site to help draw more visitors into the Yampa Valley Regional Airport with lower prices on flights this year. With a constantly updating great deals widget in the left corner, it is remarkably easy to discover the cheapest direct routes into Steamboat Springs. In a local Steamboat Pilot article, the resort’s marketing direction stated that, “most of our airfares right now are in the $200s to $300s, and this time last year they were in the $600s to $800s.” It is now cheaper and easier for you to get out to Steamboat. So check out the new site out and we look forward to seeing you out here soon!

Mid-afternoon yesterday, word came to take a look outside. With a quick glance, and then a long stare, I saw little, visibility was limited. Nickel-sized flakes were blowing down hard. Quite exciting! Continuing on and off through the night I was hoping for the best. Waking up this morning and peaking my head out the window the roofs were covered in snow. Much to my dismay, with a quick look at the ground, very little had stuck. A mixed blessing. It is still early in the fall and there is too much biking, running, and hiking to do before the winter blows in for good. It is a great time to embrace the benefits of every season.

I stopped by the Sheraton Hotel last night for the showing of the ski movie Re:Session, the first in a series of ski & snowboard movies in town this month. Walking in, the ballroom was packed with people. Everyone was talking quickly, excited about the upcoming movie showing and even more so about the upcoming season. Watching a ski movie is a different experience than a traditional movie theater trip. Because of the crowd, the dialogue was often difficult to hear and following the storyline was near impossible. But the atmosphere was contagious. Listening to the cheers from the crowd as the skiers floated through the feet of fresh powder and the collective groans as skiers took huge spills, I found myself getting more excited about dropping in the chutes and riding through all the powder I’m confident is blowing our way.

Went for a mountain bike ride last night up Howelsen Hill to try out the new Quarry Mountain Trail. This trail is a great new single-track option that winds patiently up to the cell tower. With the shortening days and variable weather, many people have skipped from the days of summer to anticipating winter ski runs. Yet despite this, the trails were crowded. Many people were out taking advantage of the cool autumn temperatures and open trails before the winter moves in. Our ride finished with the waning moon illuminating the trails, providing enough light to finish cruising down the single-track and avoid an encounter with a porcupine ambling along the trail. What a way to wind-down after work!

In a recent article The Denver Post recognized Steamboat Springs as a great destination to re-visit at a different time of year. Praising the town not for the Champagne Powder or the small lift lines, the article describes the beauty of the town in the fall. The article recognizes ‘non-traditional’ ways to enjoy Steamboat commenting on the great ways to spend a day downtown shopping at Off the Beaten Path Bookstore or dining at Harwig’s/L’Apogee. Recognizing the town for its beauty in the fall is a great testament to Steamboats beauty. Not only admired from afar for the beautiful summers and winters, but also for the seasons some have come to view as simply transitions or ‘mud-season.’ Awesome to see that Steamboat is being recognized for its beauty year-round!

Stopped by Slopeside tonight to enjoy their great happy hour specials. Their thin-crust pizzas, topped with fantastic combination of toppings, and all with ski-themed names, are some of the best in town. And during Happy Hour, when they are $7 each, it is an opportunity not to be missed. A restaurant known for its Apres Ski atmosphere come winter, Slopeside in the summer exudes a fun, relaxing atmosphere. Sitting out on the patio, watching a group of 4 argue over the rules of corn-hole and bikers fly down the mountain in the background, I cornily realized that the cliche “people come to Steamboat for the winter but stay for the summer,” rings true.

One of Steamboat’s touted summer activities, The Howler, or the Alpine Slide, never gets old. A 2,400ft track, the Howler can be be enjoyed at break-neck speeds around the luge-like track, or leisurly completed at a comforatble pace.

Having a friend visit Steamboat makes one contantly remember the beauty of the town and the many fun activities that we sometimes take for granted. After a short, strenuous run up through the meadows on Howelsen we finished casually streching and talking by the base of the Alpine Slide. Seeing the slide I was told it was next on our list of things to do. Taking the chair to the top, the banter began, who was going to win if each took one of the slides. Pushing the sled to its limits, and not touching the break once, i was able to take the edge. A great way to spend a few hours in the afternoon and provide discussion on who is the fastest friend or family member, the Howler is truly a Steamboat Summer Event not to be missed!

Nothing is quite as relaxing as jumping in a tube and just relaxing as you float slowly down the Yampa. Watching Mt. Werner fade away in the distance as you approach downtown, floating down the river is the best thing for a hot day. While the river was flowing hard through the beginning of the summer, nearing now, its pace is now merely crawling. But in a way the slow pace of the Yampa is almost more fitting for the summer, no rush to reach the end. The slow pace doesn’t deter us from getting out in the almost 90 degree day, cooling off as we drift downstream, enjoying the shared sun and comradare of tubing with a group of friends.
