How to ride a Jeepney

Riding a Jeepney can be a fun experience for the tourist here and it is a cheap alternative to taxi cabs for getting around, but there are a few things you should know before you take that first Jeepney ride.

First, most are open air, which means if you are stuck in traffic, be prepared to cover your face with a handkerchief because of exhaust fumes. Next thing to take into account is if you are tall you may want to sit near the exit because the ceilings are low and you may prefer not to try to work your way to far inside to get a seat. One more important point to keep in mind is the drivers have a tendency to pack as many people as possible into one, so sometimes it a tight fit inside. The attitude seems to be, there is always room for one more. Some passengers will stand on the protruding platform at the rear of the Jeepney as well because of that.

When it comes time to pay the fare it is a good idea to have the exact change or at least some of the local currency in small denominations. It you are sitting towards the rear and the Jeepney is crowded you can just reach out at arm’s length and another passenger will pass your fare down to the driver. Sometimes the Jeepney driver will have a helper that rides on the back directing the passengers and collecting the fare, in which case you would just pay them.

When you want to ride a Jeepney you can catch one at a terminal or usually you can just hail one like you would a taxi and they will stop and pick you up. When you have reached your destination, just tap on the hand rail on the ceiling with a coin or key and they will pull over and let you out. This is common and the easiest way if the driver doesn’t speak your language, plus it beats yelling in some ones ear to stop. :-)

Riding a Jeepney can be a lot of fun despite the occasional annoyances like heavy traffic and sometimes be packed in like sardines. There are plenty available and are a cheap alternative to a taxi cab which have their draw backs as well.

The Philippine Jeepney once considered the “King of the Road” in the Philippines continues to be one of the most popular modes of transportation despite economic and political pressure mounting against them. The Jeepneys originq can be traced back to the tens of thousands of American Jeeps left behind after WW2. The Filipinos saw an opportunity to convert the old jeeps into a form of public transportation.

The demand grew for the Jeepney and in 1953 Sarao Motors in Las Pias City, Philippines began manufacturing the Jeepney and would go on to become world famous because of it. At its peak the company was producing 18 – 20 Jeepneys a day, but the Asian economy and Government regulations began to take their toll and in October 2000 the company announced that production of the Jeepney was coming to an end.

Eleven years later the children of the late founder of Sarao Motors have reopened the plant, but it is only a fraction of what it once was, producing two – three Jeepneys a month. Nether the less the tradition continues and the company is looking into building more efficient models, including an electric Jeepney. That could alleviate some of the criticism aimed at the Jeepney, primarily that they are gas guzzlers and heavy polluters.

The Jeepney is unique and it is said, “That no two are alike.” The Jeepenys are custom painted and decorated quite elaborately by the individual owners. The Jeepneys are privately owned and not a source of transportation provided by the government. Throughout many parts of the Philippines the Jeepney is the main source of transportation and I hope the problems that are plaguing them now can be worked out and these unique vehicles can continue to provide a valuable service to the people of the Philippines.

Palawan named world’s best island by Travel + Leisure magazine

The honors continue for the Philippines with announcement of Palawan being named the “World’s Best Island” by the New York based Travel + Leisure magazine. The official awards ceremony we will be held in New York City on July 18th.

UNESCOs recognition of the Palawan biosphere reserve in the Philippines for the Puerto-Princesa Subterranean River National Park and the Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park helped Palawan garner the award. Adding to the many attractions you can see in Palawan is a new resort with a scuba center. Palawan is an exceptionally beautiful archipelago that is only about a 2 ½ hour flight out of Hong Kong and it’s great to see it get some well deserved recognition. (for more click here and here)

Siargao Islands Cloud Nine named one of the Top 50 Surfing Spots in the world.

Cloud Nine in Siargao, Surigao del Norte made the top 10 of the world’s best surfing spots. Ranked 9th recently by CNN Travel on their list of, “World’s 50 best surf spots.” Siargao is well known by surfers all over the world as The Surfing Capital of the Philippines with a reputation for large barreling waves. The surfing season is generally considered to run from Sept – March with some of the best waves coming in Oct. – April though good waves can be found year round.

The Cloud Nine break at Siargao Island is the most famous wave there, but there are many other good waves in the area that surfers can enjoy. Siargao Island is also popular with surfers because it’s considered an inexpensive surfing destination and the people are so friendly.

Kadayawan sa Dabaw 2013, The King of all Festivals – Davao City, Philippines

Davao's annual festival, the Kadayawan Sa Dabaw will be celebrated officially on the third weekend of August (August 17-18, 2013) with pre and post festival activities taking place the week before and after. The Kadayawan Sa Dabaw is known in the Philippines as the King of all Festivals and is a celebration of life and a bountiful harvest. The festival offers street dancers dressed in colorful and spectacular costumes, colorful floats decorated with fruits, vegetables and flowers, sporting and cultural events all representing the local tribes of Davao and their traditions.

The streets of Davao are decorated with local fruits and vegetables and there are street dancers dressed in the colorful garments with elaborate props in the traditions of their tribes parading through the streets to the delight of those in attendance. On Sunday the festival continues with the Floral parade featuring floats decorated with flowers, and occasionally vegetables and fruits from the region showing off the blessings the region enjoys. The Kadayawan Sa Dabaw is photographers dream and there are many opportunities’ to get some beautiful pictures this extraordinary festival.

Other activities include the Miss Kadayawan beauty contest where representatives from the local tribes compete for the honor of being crowned the Bya’Neng ng Kadayawan. The beautiful young indigenous ladies competing for the title will not win it on beauty alone. They must be knowledgeable about the traditions, legend and the myths of their local people as well. The competition includes the performing of songs and dances from their tribes, modeling traditional attire and answering questions about their heritage. In the end one young lady will be titled Miss Kadayawan bringing a sense of pride and recognition to her community.

There is boat racing featuring native and speed boats held in the harbor, horse fights, where the studs fight for the rights to mate with a mare and various markets and exhibits displaying the best of what Davao has to offer. Speaking of the best Davao has to offer we can’t leave out the beautiful Mindanao girls that will be both participating and in attendance at the festival. The Kadayawan Sa Dabaw festival is one event you will not want to miss if you’re visiting the Philippines in August. The Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival of Festivals is held in Tacloban City every June 29th in honor of Sr. Santo Niño. The Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival is actually two festivals merged together to form one large and colorful celebration. Kasadyaan Festival represents the people from the various communities in Leyte that come together for the dance and celebration. Each community has their own theme that reflects the folklore, legends and reflects their pride in their community. The Pintados Festival is a cultural and religious festival commemorating the ancient warriors (Pintados). The ancient warriors were covered in tattoos as a symbol of courage and strength and this tradition is portrayed in the festival.

The most anticipated event of the Pintados festival is the festive dancers. They are painted from head to toe with designs intended to mimic the armor and tattoos of the warriors of old. With the sounds and beats of the native instruments filling the air men and woman file into the streets adorned in the colorful and often elaborate costumes and proceed to dance and parade through the streets of Tacloban City, Leyte. As you watch the colorful spectacle you can’t help but get feel for what it must have been like in the ancient times in Leyte. At the end of the parade a traditional Philippines Fiesta follows and all those in attendance are welcome to join in the celebration the is the Pintados festival.

Parada ng Lechon Festival - Balayan, Batangas

Parada ng Lechon Festival is held every year on June 24^th. in Balayan, Batangas to honor their patron saint, St. John the Baptist. The highlight of the festival is the actual “Parada Ng Lechon” parade of pigs. Typically 50 or more Lechon are paraded through the streets. The pigs are decorated by members of the organizations providing them and might be wearing sunglasses, wigs or other humorous costumes. In a crazy parade like this you can most certainly expect some pranksters to be lurking and they are in abundance. People from the crowds will spray water and beer over the Lechons as they are paraded by. More than the pigs are hit by these pranksters. The attendants and the crowd also get showered. It’s all part of the fun though and celebrants laugh it off. Occasionally someone will try and sneak a bite of the tasty Lechons as they pass by as well.

After the fiesta the Lechons are returned to the homes or businesses of their owners and another celebration begins. This one involves feasting and drinking. For many with a sharing attitude they will offer some to the visitors and parade goers as well. It’s an unusual fiesta, but one that is a lot of fun and will provide you with some great memories and plenty to talk about when you get home.

The Parada ng Lechon Festival isn’t only about the parade though. The celebration actually begins the night before when an Anniversary Ball is held at the town plaza. There they will choose and crown the Queen of the festival. The next morning there is a mass held in honor of St. John at the Immaculate Conception Church. The pigs are gathered on the patio and blessed symbolizing the baptism of John the Baptist. Following the mass, the parade begins and the Fiesta kicks it in to high gear.

In the Philippines Lechon has become one of the most popular dishes. Lechon was originally introduced by the Spaniards and the name means, suckling pig that has been roasted.” It is commonly served during festivals, holidays, weddings and many other special occasions here. Typically you can find Lechon year round in the Philippines at local restaurants, stores and numerous street vendors. It is an extremely popular dish here.

Lechon is traditionally prepared by seasoning the pig after it has been cleaned and then skewed on a large stick through its entire length. Then it is cooked over an open bed of charcoals. The pig is slowly rotated over the heat for several hours until it’s evenly cooked through. This method of cooking and an occasional basting results in a crispy skin and moist and tender meat on the inside. Once you’ve had the opportunity to try Lechon you will understand the Filipinos love for this dish.

The local officials of Lapu Lapu City have done it again in their efforts to promote the City as a top tourist spot in the Philippines. This time it’s “Fun Nights in Lapu-Lapu” at the Mactan Shrine and it happens every Saturday night. Starting at 6:00 PM and continuing through the night until the people just can’t party anymore. There are live performances on stage of Lapu Lapu City’s famous Rampada Dance and plenty of singing. You will hear traditional songs as well as modern ones performed by the local Oponganon talents.

In addition to the live performances on stage there is a large variety of fine foods prepared by the local ladies for the visitors. A must try for anyone visiting the Philippines. You will even be treated to an awesome fireworks display at the end of the evening. Locals and tourist alike are bound to have great time and it’s the perfect way to end a day of island hopping and or sightseeing.

New Philippines Bureau of Immigration Office in Cebu

The Philippines Bureau of Immigration opened a new satellite office in Cebu. It is located inside the Gaisano shopping mall in Lapu-Lapu City, Mactan Island. According to BI statistics the Mactan-Cebu International Airport saw an increase in the number of foreign tourist to over 600,000 in 2012. The number has been increasing steadily in recent years. This is part of a program the BI has launched to make their services more accessible to tourist. This is great news, especially for those of us living in Cebu. Tourist will benefit as well since the new Immigration office will give them another convenient option and help reduce the wait times that are occasionally part of the Visa process due to volume.

An added bonus to the new BI satellite office in the Gaisano Capital Island Mall Mactan you can enjoy some shopping or dinning in one of the many fine establishments located in the mall when you are finished. Aside from shopping Lapu Lapu City offers the following, The Mactan Shrine (Commemorating the famous battle between Ferdinand Magellan and Lapu Lapu), scuba diving, and plenty of white sand beaches. Some example are, Shangri-La, Plantation Bay, Blue Waters, White Sands, Tambuli Beach Club, to name a few.

Every year on May 15 the small town of Lucban located in the Quezon Province about 120 km S.E. of Manila celebrates the Pahiyas Festival. It honours the patron saint of farmers, St Isidore the Labourer and welcomes in a bountiful harvest. The town of Lucban is ablaze with color and activities for the annual Pahiyas Festival. The festival is a photographer's dream and wonderful spectacle to observe for those lucky enough to be able to attend the celebration.

On entering Lucban one of the first things you will notice is the brightly colored Kipings frequently hanged in chandelier like forms called Arangya. You will also see them shaped like flowers and used as decorative wallpapers. Kipings are a wafer made from rice paste and colored with food coloring before being fashioned into decorations for the festival. The Kipings are edible and when the celebration is over the can be grilled or fried. Many will be tossed to the people attending providing them with a special treat for their taste buds.

Besides the Kipings, homes are decorated with fruits, vegetables, grains, paper-mache, and palm hats. Many families will display their harvest as well for the parish priests to bless when he passes their home. There is also a contest where the home is viewed and the best decorated is declared the winner. Besides the beautifully decorated homes there are civic parades, processions, a trade fair and other activities to enjoy. You might want to try some of the delicacies available at the Pahiyas Festival like, Lucban Longganisa, Puto Seko, Pancit Hab-hab and Fried Siopaol.

Finally, it would not be fair not to mention the people of Lucban. They are warm and friendly and will and provide the icing on the cake to a wonderful celebration and visit to the Pahiyas Festival in Lucban.

It's that time of year again Lapu Lapu City, Cebu. The annual celebration of the battle of Mactan (Kadaugan sa Mactan) will be celebrated in April. The centerpiece of the week longs celebration is the Kadaugan Street Party. The Kadaugan Street Party and the Rampada will take place along the M.L. Quezon Highway and on the grounds of the Lapu Lapu City Hall on April 26 and 27 from 5 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

The Kadaugan sa Mactan is the annual celebration and reenactment of the Battle of Mactan where Ferdinand Magellan was killed in a battle with Mactan Chieftain Lapu-lapu. Ferdinand Magellan is historically credited with being the first man to sail around the world. The unfortunate truth was that he did not make it. The remainder of his crew would go on to complete the journey, hence Ferdinand Magellan was given credit for it.

The location of the Battle of Mactan is now an historic landmark and monuments commemorating both Chieftain Lapu-lapu and Ferdinand Magellan can be found at the site. The park area commemorating the battle is a beautiful place and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Cebu. A must see if you're visiting Cebu.

The Kadaugan Street Party is one of the most anticipated events of the year in Lapu Lapu City. There will be plenty of food and drinks available as well as live music, carnival, fireworks show and much more. Including some surprises according to City Councilor Harry Don Radaza. The Rampada and for the first time the Higante competition will highlight the evenings activities. I do not want to leave out this gem from the celebration. The midnight Beer Run. Run, walk or crawl to the finish line. Cold beer is waiting.

This will be the third year of the Kadaugan Street Party and it has gotten bigger and better every year. I am sure that tradition will continue. This is one street party that will not disappoint.

Located about 360 miles southwest of Manila, The Philippines capital. The Puerto Princesa Underground River is the world’s longest navigable underground river in the world and on January 28,2012 the site was officially named as one of The New 7 Wonders of Nature. The river is located in the St. Paul's Subterranean River National Park. The Park is a spectacular sight with its limestone mountain landscapes, white sand beaches and abundant wild life. The main attraction is the 8.2 kilometer underground river that flows to the China Sea.

Travelers can go by boat to the underground rivers entrance and along the way they take in the spectacular scenery that is Palawan. On arriving in a beautiful lagoon surrounded by ancient forest, monkeys, large lizards and a variety of exotic birds they will board a Banca that will take them directly in to the cave for the journey down river. The Banca will have a kerosene lamp on board and visitors can enjoy the scenery some of which consist of Stalagmites and stalactites which are formed in various shapes throughout the caves. There are various cave rooms along the way including one that is 300 meters high as is one of the largest in the world. The fun does not end with river trek. Visitors are welcome do some bird watching, hiking in the mountains, and if you are the adventurous type you can go exploring the deeper parts of the forest.

Plenty of comfortable accommodations can be found nearby in Palawan city in Puerto. The hotels offer plenty of comforts and modern conveniences including internet services at reasonable rates. New roads make getting around much easier and faster than in the past. Kawasan Falls is a very popular destination in the southern part of Cebu. About a 2-hour drive located in Badian Town. When you arrive you will have to walk about 20 minutes or so along a rocky path to reach the main waterfall. There’s a beautiful stream and a large variety of tropical plants along the path. Be sure to have your camera ready because the view is quite spectacular. You will have to cross three small bridges along the way and this will give you a great opportunity to take some pictures.

Once you’re there food and drinks are readily available as well as some cottages and tables. There are three water falls there. The first will be the main and the largest. The paths leading of to the other two are not too difficult to navigate and well worth the trip. You will find more tables and shelters available at the other falls as well. If you plan to do some swimming, life jackets are highly recommended since the water in some spots is 30 or more meters deep. There are guides and rafts available and they will take you under a rock ledge and you will be behind the falls. You then pass through the fall itself, which is quite a unique experience. If you don’t like crowds, I recommend that you go during the week. Transportation to the falls is available via a V-Hire van. It’s a full-size van that can seat 10 comfortably and you can sit back and enjoy the ride.

Bohol is a beautiful island paradise located in the Visayas island group in central Philippines. It is famous for its white sand beaches, the Chocolate Hills and the Tarsier, the worlds smallest primate. It is surrounded by beautiful beaches and coral reefs teaming with marine life. If you love nature, then Bohal is a must see destination for you. There are also more than 1400 caves to explore. The most famous of these is Hinagdanan Cave’s on Panglao island. The cave leads to an underground pool with plenty of stalactites’ & stalagmites. There is even a sanctuary for the Tarsiers called the Tarsier Trail. Here, visitors are allowed to hold and touch the tiny little primates. Opportunities for scuba diving and snorkeling are plentiful with abundance of coral reefs that surround the island and are rich in marine life. Philippine Tarsier

The Philippine tarsier is one of the one of the world’s smallest primates at about 85 to 160 millimeters or 3.35 to 6.30 in in height. Their eyes are fixed in the skull and they must turn their heads to look around. These little nocturnal primates have very sensitive eyes and pictures with a flash are not allowed.

During March the Sandugo Festivalis is held and in May there’s the Tagbilaran City Fiesta and Bolibong Kingking festival among others. There also the Mag-Aso Falls and Loboc River cruises. You can enjoy a small band playing while you eat and enjoy the beautiful view while on the cruise. The towns in Bohol have many old churches dating back to the Spanish error to see. Department stores, money changers, ATM’s, banks, cinemas, restaurants, hospitals, travel agencies, and hotels also can be found here. Bohol is definitely worth a visit by itself or if you’re in Cebu it’s only about a two hour boat ride on the SuperCat ferries away to see the sites and you can return in the evening.

Boracay Island is located off the north-western tip of Panay Island, Philippines. Boracay is world famous for its white sand beaches and is usually the first place mentioned when talking about Philippine vacation spots. Scuba diving, snorkeling, sunbathing and sailing in a slender hulled boats called Paraw are some of the common attractions. A ride in the Paraw is fast and a lot of fun if you don’t mind getting wet.

White Beach extends almost the entire length of the western side of the island. During the peak season of the tourist season (December through July) the beach is ideal for day swimming in its warm waters. On the east side of the island is the windward shore, with an almost continuous onshore winds and a protected reef that is ideal for both the Scuba diving and Surfering. It’s also a great spot for backpackers with its many great scenic spots.

At the end of the day, you can view the spectacular sunsets walking along the beach or from one of the beachfront bars which serve up mixed tropical cocktails to titillate your senses.

At night there is plenty to do with numerous clubs and bars scattered along the beach. The Lenten and Christmas seasons are the most popular times to visit because of the many fiestas. For those of you that like golf there is a 18 hole, par 72 golf course at Filinvest’s Fairways & Blue Waters located not far from the beach.

Siargao Island is the #1 surfing destination in the Philippines situated in the pristine and backdrop of the Surigao del Norte paradise. It is Fed by the waves of the Pacific Ocean, this island is the Philippine’s alternative to Oahu and Tahiti. The island is home to roughly 200,000 Filipinos and has a well-preserved wetland of mangroves (largest in Mindanao) in the south and west, and a sprawling coastline composed of white sand beaches and unspoiled lagoons in the east which faces the Pacific Ocean. Siargao has excellent surfing conditions, particularly during the southwest “habagat” monsoon from August to November, when the prevailing wind is offshore. There are many beautiful reefs to see also if you like diving. It is recommended you use a local guide if it’s your first time here to avoid the potential hazards.

Siargao’s nightlife is mainly along General Luna, especially near Cloud Nine where local and foreign tourists gather for annual surfing and other activities. Bars and discos are very busy along this stretch of beach and really come alive at night. I’s also recommenced that you bring enough pesos with you since there aren’t many places to change your money here.

Palawan is largest and most preserved island group in the Philippines. It consists of 1700 islands. The majestic rainforest, caves, coral reefs, mangroves, beaches and beautiful clear blue waters are just a sample of the wonderful things you can see there. There’s over 10,000 square kilometers of coral reefs that surround the islands. Below is a very small sample of some of the things you can see in Palawan.

Tubbataha Reef

Some must see attractions are Puerto Princess Subterranean River National Park, a.k.a.Sabang’s St. Paul Subterranean National Park. It was formed naturally over millions of years; the exact length of the caves and river network is still unknown today. The Stalactites and stalagmites and multi colored stones in the caverns are a wonder to see. If you’re into diving there’s the Tubbataha Reef National Marine Park. Tubbataha Reef consist of two atolls. The northern most serves as a sanctuary for birds and sea turtles. The Capital of Palawan, Puerto Princes offers a night life with several clubs and bars. If it’s nature and diving you are seeking, then Palawan would be certainly tough to beat.

A few other popular places to see are, Tigman Beach. A great beach for swimming. There are two resorts there, Camille del Sol and Princessa Holiday.

Estrella Falls

Fresh cool waters cascading rapidly from Victoria Peak to twin falls at the mountain’s edge, Estrella Falls is a popular destination for locals and visitors alike. The crystal clear waters flow into three natural pools of varying depths. One has a depth that is best suited for good swimmers; another is somewhat shallower and is safer for those who do not swim well and there is third pool that is shallow and ideal for children. The Municipal Government of Narra, has provided facilities in the forms of cottages, huts, shades, restrooms and provisions for grilling.

It’s home to the endangered Philippine cockatoo, locally known as katala or kalabukay. It’s also home to some 68 other kinds of birds including the Blue-Headed Racket Tail, the Black-Naped Oriole and the White Vintage Shama.

Tabon Caves Complex is a network of some 200 caves of which only 29 have been fully explored. The site was declared a Museum Reservation Site in 1972 by Presidential Proclamation No. 996. It’s believed to be the first pace humans settled in the Philiipines. It can be reached by boat from the Quezon wharf in about 30 minutes.

The City of Dapitan has a rich history in the Philippines as the place the Spaniards exiled Philippine national hero Jose Rizal to after he criticized the Spanish regime for their occupation of the Philippines.

While he was training as a doctor in Spain he wrote two novels attacking the Spanish repression in the Philippines. He became one of the leading spokesmen of the nationalist movement. He was an advocate of gradual change rather than a revolutionary approach, but ran into problems with the Spanish authorities when he established the Liga Filipina, in 1892 a reform society. He was exiled to Mindanao and though not involved in the nationalist uprising of 1896, he would later be executed by the Spanish authorities for alleged complicity in the rebellion. There is now a shrine dedicated to Jose Rizal in Dapitan City.

Gloria Fantasyland

Gloria Fantasyland has become one of the best known attractions in Dapitan City. It’s a beautiful theme park, comparable to the Disney ones. It is also the largest theme park in the Philippines outside of Manila and is the first of its kind in the Mindanao - Visayas region. It boast 35 rides with more on the way and at night the view with the lights and the live shows is spectacular..

The Dakak Park & Beach Resort is a 750 meter private beach and is blanketed with powdery white sand. Spring water flowing over waterfalls feed the resort’s two pools. There is a private open-air jacuzzi where you can relax and unwind. Jet-skis and water skiing are just two of the many options you have here. At night the beach is turned into a buffet and you can dine while watching locals put on a show of traditional dance. There’s plenty to do for the family besides the beach. The family can enjoy bowling,, tennis, basketball, billiards or golf.

Marine life

Dakak is also called the “Diving Mecca in Mindanao”. The prime months are March through September. The Dakak dive sites offer a variety of environments from gradual slopes to dense groups of coral, vertical walls, caves, a shipwreck and reefs. The marine life is varied. Some spots are abundant with soft coral growth and huge basket sponges, while others team with schools of jacks, surgeons, and other small reef inhabitants. There is also over 15 hectares of lush greenery to explore and you can even do some cave exploration.

Batanes is the northernmost province in the Philippines. It’s also the smallest as far as land mass and population. This is a nature lovers dream with plenty of opportunities for fishing, diving and hiking. This small group of islands sits where the Pacific ocean meets the China Sea and is home to some of the rarest corals in the world.

Sabtang

Two of the more popular islands are Sabtang and Itbayat. Both are accessible by boat from the capital Bacso. Sabtang is only a 30 minute ride by boat while Itbayat can take 4 hours. Charter planes are available that can make the trip in 30 min. If you do choose to go by boat be prepared for active ride. The seas can be a little choppy. Itbayat terrain consist of rolling hills and semi level plateaus surrounded by continuous massive cliffs rising up to 70 meters above sea level. There are no shorelines. Sabtang is quite different though, it has many small flat areas spread out on its coasts and its interior consist by steep mountains and very deep canyons. Sabtang does have some stretches of sandy beaches and or rocky shorelines.

Batan is another great island to visit for hikers. It’s similar in topography as Sabtang. It offers long stretches of hills where animals graze, a ghost town, deserted after years of beatings by storms and the “radar Yuron” an abandoned weather station that offers a 360 degree view of the island.

It’s about a 6 hour bus ride from Baguio City, which is itself about a 6 hour bus ride from Manila. It’s well worth the trip though. Sagada is famous for its hanging coffins. It was a former practice of hanging the coffins from a cliff with the belief that this would aid the souls of the dead to reach heaven.

Sagada’s main tourist attraction though are the Sumaguing and Lumiang Caves. The caves feature unique and unusual rock formations, and they also include tunnels. They were carved out by water and it is interesting to see what water has done to the rocky surroundings and floors in these caves. You can explore the caves with the help of the local guides.

You have two options for exploring the caves. The first is the short route. The caves have flowing water in the lower parts, and by choosing the short route, you will only pass through the parts of the caves that have a shallow water level. Your second option is the long route. This route is much more difficult and challenging because you must pass through parts of the cave where the water is much deeper. It can reach up to one’s neck. The long route will take you through the cave’s tunnel systems. This route is takes much longer and either way you go a local guide is a must.

Other interesting places to see there are, Other places of interest in Sagada are, Lake Danum, the Rice Terraces, Echo Valley, the Underground River, Kiltepan Tower and the Bomod-ok and Bokong Falls.

As for accommodations, there are a number of hotels and inns located very near the bus stop. The accommodations offered are at a very reasonable rate. You shouldn’t have any problems finding a place to rest. There are restaurants located nearby, ready to serve all visitors. The town is very peaceful and a great place to see some extraordinary sites and relax. One final note, though the town is small, the education level is high and the locals speak English quite well .
