University Rankings: Mathematics

2010-10-03T12:30:00.000-07:00

Mathematics is an ancient discipline. The earliest examples of non-trivial mathematical methods date back some 5000 years ago.

There are many things to check before picking a discipline. It wouldn't hurt to make some preliminary research, and wikipedia can be a good source for that. If you are considering mathematics, why not go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mathematics? Hardly a bad place to start.

Another thing you might want to check is the average and/or median salary for that discipline. You can find that out in your national bureau of labor statistics. This is the U.S. bureau of Labor Statistics' page with data about mathematicians: http://www.bls.gov/oes/2009/may/oes152021.htm.

If you've decided mathematics is your desired field of interest, one of the next steps would be to find out the right university: Find the Top Universities for Mathematics:

The following ranking is the ARWU ("Academic Ranking of World Universities") ranking for Universities, solely for the discipline of mathematics:

World Rank	Institution*	Score on Alumni	Score on Award	Score on HiCi	Score on PUB	Score on TOP	Total Score

ARWU - Academic Ranking of World Universities

2010-09-19T09:30:00.000-07:00

The Academic Ranking of World Universities is a ranking compiled and
managed by the Shanghai Jiaotong University.

Along with THE ranking (about which I wrote in my last post), it's
considered one of the two most important rankings out there.

Since the original goal of the ranking was "to find out the gap between
Chinese universities and world-class universities, particularly in terms
of academic or research performance.", as it's creators say, this ranking
is mainly concerned with the academic quality of the institutes listed.

With that said, give a round of applause to the top 12 universities
for the year 2010, according to the ARWU:

1	Harvard University	Cambridge	United States (Massachusetts)
2	University of California, Berkeley	Berkeley	United States (California)
3	Stanford University	Stanford, CA	United States (California)
4	Massachusetts Institute of Technology	Cambridge	United States (Massachusetts)
5	Cambridge University	Cambridge	United Kingdom (England)
6	California Institute of Technology	Pasadena	United States (California)
7	Princeton University	Princeton	United States (New Jersey)
8	Columbia University	New York City	United States (New York)
9	University of Chicago	Chicago	United States (Illinois)
10	Oxford University	Oxford	United Kingdom (England)
11	Yale University	New Haven	United States (Connecticut)
12	Cornell University	Ithaca	United States (New York)

*

You can't go wrong with any of these universities, really, but you still
might want to check the rankings dealing with the specific
discipline you wish to study. I'll deal with that in my next few posts.

Cheers!

Times Higher Education University Rankings

Times Higher Education University Ranking is a ranking compiled by the Times
Higher Education magazine. The magazine is based in London and deals with topics
involving higher education.

The ranking weights are the following:

Peer Review Score (40%)
Recruiter Review (10%)
International Faculty Score (5%)
International Students Score (5%)
Faculty/Student Score (20%)
Citations/Faculty Score (20%).

With that said, it appears a good ranking for those who are mostly concerned with
the academic quality of their future university/college.

University Rankings: How it works!

2010-08-20T09:56:00.000-07:00

University Rankings are commonly conducted by magazines, newspapers

and institutions of higher education. While some rankings consider the overall

quality of an institution, other focus on specific departments or programs.

So how is it decided where to place each institution?

It depends.

Basically, a given institution is graded in several distinct parameters. The final grade

of the institution is formulated according to these grades. It should be noted that

each of these parameters may be weighted differently in the composition of the

final grade.

Common parameters include (but are not limited to):

- Citations to the works of faculty members in scientific papers worldwide

- Surveys of the institution's reputation among notable researchers

- Surveys of the institution's reputation among relevant figures in the job market

- Number of Nobel Prize winners in the institution

- Mean annual salary of an institution's graduate

What are university rankings?

2010-08-20T08:30:00.000-07:00

So you want to study for a degree. Which university you choose will play a
critical role in how your next few years look like and eventually determine
your career opportunities. So you better make the right decision!

This is where university rankings come into play.

You need to find the Best Place to Study!

Keep your budget in mind, figure out your desired location, and so on; but
don't forget, the academic level and reputation of the institution you eventually
pick will make a huge difference on the outcome of your studies. University
Rankings are a way to measure these important things.

College and University Rankings are lists of institutions of higher education,
the order of which is determined by a combination of factors. These factors
vary greatly; some of the rankings are based on parameters measuring the
purely academic quality of an institution (citations of the institution's faculty
members, for instance), while other address factors such as the opinions of
your future employers or the mean annual salary of a graduate.

Remember: some rankings are more relevant to you than others!

Check out How it Works in this post, so you might make the best choice!
