Who doesn't know Majaz?

The poet of romance and revolution was born in Rudauli town in Awadh [Uttar Pradesh].

In this couplet, Majaz says that, 'O my companions, you may be worried about my future or carry any feeling about my fate, but I am least bothered about it and have no iota of sadness that how I destroyed [ruined] myself'.

His real name was Asrar-ul-Haq and he attained such love that it is not even understandable in other countries that how poets and works, their lives, can evoke such passion, even after the poet has died, decades ago.

वरक़ है मेरे सहीफ़े* का आस्मां क्या है
रहा ये चांद तो शायद तुम्हारा चेहरा है

फ़िज़ा की शाख़ पे लफ़्ज़ों के फूल खिलने दो
जिसे सुकूत समझते हो ज़र्द पत्ता है

मेरे क़दम भी कोई शाम काश ले लेती
मेरा सफ़र भी तो सूरज की तरह तन्हा है

ज़रूर चांद के होंटों पे मेरा नाम आया होगा
मेरी मिज़्ह से सितारा सा कोई टूटा है

हर एक शख़्स को उम्मीद अब उसी से है

Eminent poet Zia Farooqui hails from Sandila, the famous town in Uttar Pradesh.

He stayed a long part of his life in Kanpur before he settled in Bhopal. He is known for his poetic craft, rich imagery and command over the language.

NOTE: Syed Mohammad Nomaan who is known as Nomaan Shauq in literary world, was born on July 2, 1965 in Ara, Bihar. The author, whose poetry is heard with rapt attention, has several collections of poetry to his name.

The collections include 'Jalta Shikaara Dhoondhne Mein', 'Ajnabi Saa'ato.n ke Darmiyaa.n' and 'Freezer Mein Rakhi Shaam'. His couplets are widely quoted and his books, collections have been published in Hindi [Devnagri script] also.

Fani Badauni* [pronunciation Faani] was born in Badaun town in Uttar Pradesh in 1879. He is among the legends of Urdu poetry.

He passed away in 1941. Fani [pronunciation: Faani] is known for the sadness in his poetry. Read his ghazal in Roman, Urdu and Hindi scripts, here:

Khwaja Haider Ali 'Aatish' Lakhnawi is one of the giants of Urdu literature who was born in 1778.

Aatish and Imam Bakhsh Nasikh were contemporary poets whose rivalry is well-known. Both had hundreds of disciples.
The era of Aatish-Nasikh was a golden era for Urdu poetry in Lucknow. Aatish passed away in 1848. Read his ghazal:

Renowned Urdu poet, philosopher and thinker Sir Muhammad Iqbal was born in Sialkot in Punjab in undivided India [now Pakistan] in 1877.

One of the greatest Urdu poets ever, his name is taken alongside the great Mir Taqi Mir and Ghalib. Allama Iqbal is known for his Nazms and particularly the famous 'Shikwa & Jawab-e-Shikwa'. He passed away in 1938.

شمس الرحمٰن علوی کی یہ نظم، اپنے شہر، بھوپال اور اس کی تہزیب، تمدن، قدرتی خوبصورتی کی تعریف میں لکھی گئ ہے۔بھوپال وہ شہر ہے جسے ادب کا مرکز اور تہذیب کا گہوارہ ہنوے کے ساتھ ساتھ تاریخ میں بہت اہم مقام حاصل ہے۔ یہاں بیگمات نے ایک صدی سے زائد عرصے تک حکمرانی کی۔ یہاں قدرتی مناظر، مشہور تالاب اور پہاڈیوں کے علاوہ اردو کا ایک مخصوس لب و لہجہ ہے، جسکے لئے بھی یہ شیر جانا جاتا ہے۔

*Especially, when communities or marginalized groups face atrocities and often agencies that are supposed to take action, turn Nelson's eye, apart from allowing the mobs to go after the victims.

The message is that oppressors have come earlier too and gone, it may take time but human resilience and fight for ideals and justice continues. Context--recent incidents, right-wing groups rallies, attacks, vandalism and then laws applied selectively, seizure of properties and razing the structures.

NOTE: This Urdu nazm was written when there were a series of violent incidents directed against Dalits, and at that point of time, the poet felt that had the community imbibed his teachings, the situation would have been different.

Dr BR Ambedkar had tremendous farsightedness and he had not just found the ills but had also given the prescription to the followers as to how they can tackle casteist oppression. His struggle led to a tremendous change, however, casteist violence and casteism remain a major issue in the country. In fact, Dr Ambedkar had cautioned his followers as well. The verse is a poetic tribute to his farsightedness.

[नोट: डॉ भीमराव आंबेडकर न सिर्फ भारत के संविधान के निर्माता बल्कि बीसवीं सदी की दुनिया की बड़ी शख्सियतों में से एक थे. उन्होंने दलितों और पिछड़ों के साथ ज़ात की बुनियाद पर होने वाले ज़ुल्म और छुआछूत के खिलाफऐसी जद्दोजहद की जिसका कोई मुक़ाबला नहीं.

पूरी ज़िंदगी उन्होंने अपने समाज को जागरूक करने के लिए वक़्फ़ कर दी और इस समाज के मसाएल और उनके हल भी बताये. ये नज़्म उस वक़्त लिखी गयी थी जब दलितों के खिलाफ वायलेंस की एक साथ कई घटनाएं हुईं. इस नज़्म में यही मेसेज है कि अगर उनकी तालीम को सही मानों में लोग समझते, ख़ास तौर पर बताये गए नुस्खे जिसकी तरफ उन्होंने इशारा भी किया था, तो जो कुछ ज़ुल्म और असमानता अभी भी हम देख रहे, वह नहीं होता. महान शख्सियतों के साथ अक्सर ऐसा होता है मगर डॉ आंबेडकर ने अपने समाज को चेताया भी था. नज़्म को इस कांटेक्स्ट में पढ़ा जाए ]

Countless Urdu poets have used 'Karbala' as a symbol, in fact, it is one of the most powerful expressions in Urdu poetry.

It is a metaphor, it exhorts to raise voice against tyranny, to resist and fight.

The message is to stand by the principles, against all odds. Numerous poets have used it in poetry.

From Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti's famous tribute to Imam Husain and Muhammad Ali Jauhar's couplets and Iqbal's Nazm, it is a long list. Also, progressive and modernist poets have used the metaphor.

The martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Husain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, has inspired not just Muslims but people belonging to different faiths, for centuries.

Innumerable elegiac verses have been written by poets in Urdu, Persian, Arabic and other languages, recalling the events at the battle of Karbala. As the month of Muharram begins, we share these couplets:

हुसैन, तुम नहीं रहे, तुम्हारा घर नहीं रहा
मगर तुम्हारे बाद ज़ालिमों का डर नहीं रहा
इफ़्तेख़ार आरिफ

फ़िक्र-ए-हक़-सोज़ यहां काश्त कर नहीं सकती
कर्बला, ताज को बर्दाश्त नहीं कर सकती
जोश मलीहाबादी

शाह अस्त* हुसैन, बादशाह अस्त हुसैन

दीं अस्त हुसैन, दीं पनाह अस्त हुसैन

सर दाद, न दाद दस्त दर दस्त-ए-यज़ीद**

हक़्क़ा कि बिना-ए-ला-इलाहा अस्त हुसैन

ख्वाजा मोईनुद्दीन चिश्ती

Translation:

Ruler is Hussain, Emperor is Hussain,

Faith is Hussain , guardian of faith is Hussain

Offered his head and not the hand to Yazid

Truly, the mirror of faith is Hussain

क़त्ल-ए-हुसैन असल में मर्ग-ए-यज़ीद है

इस्लाम ज़िंदा होता है हर कर्बला के बाद

मोहम्मद अली 'जौहर'

इंसान को बेदार तो हो लेने दो

ज़मीं पर ज़ुल्म की हद जो रही है
खुदाया पार अब वोह हो रही है

जहाँ में मौत का ही रक़्स जारी
अज़ल* से ज़िंदगी बस रो रही है

ज़रा पूछो तो उसका दर्द जा कर
ज़मीं ये बोझ कैसे ढो रही है

अदब तहज़ीब थी जिसकी विरासत
खबर उस नस्ल को क्या खो रही है

चिता जलने को है अब राक्षस की
तभी तो रौशनी सी हो रही है
