My father often said to me, “Son, you get what you pay for”. The same holds true for cheap LED flashlights. Often these lights use only a single LED, and the cheapest one they can find. You may not be aware, but there is a difference in both quality and quantity of light emitted from a low quality LED and a high quality LED. Think about the difference between the old yellow dingy light bulbs and the newer bulbs designed to emit white light. Though cheap led flashlights may be a good thing to keep on a key chain or to give to your crazy aunt for her birthday, they are not what you want to rely on in an emergency situation, like trying to change a tire in the middle of the night on the edge of country road. Though more expensive, the combination of multiple LEDs and higher quality LEDs often found in the more expensive brands of LED flashlights can make all the difference in the world when you really need to see something in the dark. Other quality issues may exist in cheaper lights. Faulty, or easy to break switches are often one side effect of cost cutting, as is cheaper reflective material surrounding the LEDs. While cost doesn’t always directly indicate quality, and you may find a good deal on a quality brand name light, I would be very careful of buying the cheapest flashlight I could find at the local thrift shop.
