Tasik Kenyir is the largest man-made lake in Southeast Asia, spanning 260,000 hectares.

It is also Malaysia's largest rock filled hydroelectric dam. When the area was flooded, most of the hills were above the water level, thus creating about 340 man-made islands.
The rainforest that cradles the area furnishes the lake with an incredible assortment of flora and fauna.

These include rare ferns, exotic orchids, hornbills, elephants, and panthers. It is also home to more than 8,000 species of flowers, 2,500 species of plants and trees, 800 species of orchids, and 300 species of fungus.
It is a popular retreat for nature lovers as it is surrounded by lush tropical rainforest.

It is also an anglers haven as the lake is home to hundreds of species of freshwater fish like Baung, Toman, Kelisa, Lampam and Kelah.

The Masjid Tengku Tengah Zaharah, located outside Kuala Terengganu is just 4.5km away. This is no ordinary mosque but one that is unique and said to be the only one of its kind in Malaysia. A sea turtle nesting place...

From Kuantan, drive north for about 2 hours, passing through the oil town of Kerteh, Paka and Dungun.

From Dungun town, head further north for another 5 minutes.

You should be passing over th Dungun river bridge.

After the bridge, passing by the exit to Teluk Bidara recreational beach.

You will see a curve on the road and giant rock boulders which marks the beginning of Rantau Abang beacheson your right.

The beaches of Rantau abang located in the state of Terengganu on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia,

are famed for being the landing sites of Pacific Giant leatherback turtles.

Rantau Abang is one of only six places in the world visited by these turtles from month of May to September.

Terengganu has a beautiful coastal road that takes you through most of the fishing ports and cities in the state. Kemaman district expanded considerably during the economic boom of the mid-90s, when the housing projects mushroomed overnight. Modern shops replaced the picturesque old wooden shops and roads have been widened to accommodate increased traffic. But the economic slowdown has left a clear mark on cities.

Aside from a stop to refuel and for certain foods, Kemaman has little to offer. Kemaman Port is the main port where large tankers anchor and not too far away, Star Cruises dock at their private dock near the station Awana Kijal. Star Cruise is a luxury liner that sails frequently along the coast of Terengganu on the way to Phuket, Thailand.

The first excise and customs department on the east cost was set up at Chukai because of the busy port at the estuary. Chukai means 'tax' in Malay. However, the beauty of Chukai's old town has been reduced to a few landmarks here and there but not impressive enough to make one stay.

Just on the outskirts of town, along the river sits a little fishing village little known to outsiders. The tiny river jetty is often crowded with colourful Terengganu fishing boats. Noises from fishermen sailing in after a day's catch can be heard from afar, blown in with the sea breeze. During the hot afternoons, the fishermen are seen mending their nets and traps under the shady trees nearby.
