Always on the lookout for something new I’m hungry and there isn’t a better place to find interesting and unadulterated awesome than the projects which spring forth from Kickstarter. Month after month the mind-buzzing goodness never stops as the website gives inventors, young and old, an opportunity to solve everyday problems and add some fun.

They’ve facilitated funding of over 56,800 successful projects so far so keeping up will be a task, especially if you’re on the lookout for specific types of products. I’m always on the hunt for the next new thing to review especially, Apple related products. Here are some cool gadgets to streamline your workflow and add a little fun to your day.

The Foundation Dock is a flexible and bendy iPhone and Samsung Galaxy cradle that comes with built-in speakers, microphone and 4 additional powered USB ports. I particularly love this cradle design as its not rigidly stationed in one spot buts lets you twist and turn your device, wrap it around objects at basically any angle, orientation or height. Have some tight, difficult to reach spots you wanted to showcase on your favorite video calling app? Well no more twisting, turning and breaking your back.

Plus it matches your already sleekly designed Apple products. Check it out here.

I love, love, love this one! Kinda like sharks with freakin’ laser beams attached to their heads (Austin Powers reference for those who think I’m crazy and don’t know what I’m talking about). AppTag is a console style first person shooter bundled with an iOS app that gives you a semi-real experience of shooting someone with a laser. It’s laser tag! Your iPhone becomes a heads-up-display (HUD) showing targeting details, laser effects with even GPS of your friends (or enemies’) locations. The app keeps track of scores, health status, ammo, kill streaks in real-time. Pretty cool!

Awesome Kickstarter product if you like running wild and stretching your legs while playing a first-person shooter. Find the AppTag here.

Enjoy your music or any audio on the go in style with these speakers without adding any weight on your luggage. Mojo is touted as the thinnest premium Bluetooth speaker in the world.

This wireless speaker features a super thin body weighing only 4 ounces, 7mm thin, long-lasting battery life of up to 10 hours of continuous play at max volume and works with any Bluetooth enabled device. The iOS App Store was a huge leap forward and Google was smart to jump onto this bandwagon. Android users now have access to a large marketplace of applications for tools, resources, games, and a whole lot more.

If you’re a UI designer or app developer then this showcase is definitely worth checking out. I’ve cataloged a large handful of newer Android app UI designs from Dribbble members. These aren’t usually taken from real applications, but instead posted as sample designs for potential mobile apps. You can find neat concepts and unique interface elements to help craft your own project ideas in the future.
<IMG class=frame alt="android

I’m a big fan of logos that stand out – and one way to make a logo noticeably different is to spend time creating custom lettering for the design. Instead of relying on the same pool of typefaces that every other designer has access to, custom lettering allows you to create a logo that is truly unique and that has it’s own personality and style built in. Whether it’s creating your own font just for that design, or trying your hand at calligraphy – designing the lettering for the logo can take time and a lot of patience, but when it’s done right the results can be absolutely stunning.

To help give you some inspiration, I’ve brought together some of my favourite logo designs that all make use of custom lettering. I love how each of these designs stands out as having it’s own personal style, and as a result it gives the brand a one-of-a-kind feel. Hopefully this collection will get you thinking about how to add some creative custom lettering to your next logo design.

<IMG Typical static content websites are more of the bread-and-butter layouts we see everyday. However there are plenty of more detailed examples involving message boards, forums, and other social communities.

In this gallery I’ve put together 36 screenshots of well-crafted bulletin boards for designers. Building a forum template requires lots of pre-planning to get the whole layout looking good. If you see which techniques other designers have used it may provide a blueprint for starting your own project from scratch. Take a look over some of these designs and see which interfaces tend to stand out from the crowd.
<IMG class=frame alt="android central forum bulletin

What’s the most important aspect of your business when you’re involved with selling a product? You may answer that a large client base or an excellent marketing strategy is the most important, and this is true. However, there is no point in focusing on expanding your client base or being able to market your company without delivering what you say you can to your customer, and that’s where warehouse fulfillment comes in.

To truly understand how you can utilise a process like this, you first need to know what it is. In a nutshell warehouse fulfillment starts with receiving an order from your client and processing it to the point of delivery. There are all sorts of things to consider before you get from A – B. How is the order received? How is it processed? What type of warehouse picking system do you have, and most importantly how quickly can all of this be done.

If you’re involved with a start-up or your business is small, it’s pretty easy to manage how your warehouse fulfillment works in-house. It’s likely you don’t have many staff which means it’s very difficult for employees to “hide”. In short, if a mistake is made it’s usually very easy to find out who is responsible.

The process may go something like this: You have a team of telesales staff who are responsible for taking orders over the phone and filling out an order form. This is then passed on to the team in the warehouse who are responsible for picking the correct items, packing them and sending them to the customer – easy!

As your business grows, logistics become harder to manage, and this is when you might want to consider outsourcing your warehouse fulfillment needs. There are many companies on the market that will help you do this efficiently, and it will help keep your overheads down to a manageable level. In fact, you could save a great deal of money.

Say you have a warehouse? Well, you could do away with that because companies who offer this type of service will have the space available to house all of your products for you. All you need to do is pass on the orders you receive, and everything else is done for you. Of course, managing stock levels, ensuring the customer receives their order on time and in good condition are all things a good outsourcing firm like this will make sure happens for you. Think of the amount of money you could save by not having your own warehouse?

Make sure you choose the company you want to help you wisely. Their reputation should be second to none along with a high success rate for completed deliveries. Reports such as stock levels, number of orders delivered and whatever else you want to see should be readily available to you. Personally I love entertainment media, especially related to film or animation. Adobe Premiere Pro is a top-tier video suite which can help directors and other film editors put together finished pieces. But when you don’t know anything about the software it’s very confusing and practically off-putting to a newcomer.

I’ve catalogued a total of 30 brilliant Premiere Pro tutorials for anyone new to video editing. This gallery includes bare-bone basics along with more advanced topics of splitting, transitions, effects, lighting, and exporting. If you truly want to learn all you need is time and a little patience.
<IMG class=frame alt="tutorial learn premiere pro cs6 basic ideas video"
Video editing has become a colossal industry along with the advancements in cinema, television, and with animated cartoons. Online video streaming has allowed anyone with the proper skillset to develop their own web series and upload to YouTube or even produce with a company such as Netflix. But it takes a lot of practice to capture footage and master the editing process.

If you have ever heard of the Pro Tools software then you might know a bit about large-scale video editing. The following graphic provides beneficial keyboard shortcuts you can memorize to start really learning more about the process. It was created by Video Symphony which is also an excellent website to study video editing techniques. We’re of the belief that the second approach is best for most businesses, especially if time and money are scarce.
It’s easy to make mistakes by not thinking critically about your business purposes. Those purposes will change from page to page. A suggestions page, for instance, might be clean and simple, with a lot of white space (similar to a very clean landing page). A resources page, on the other hand, might be loaded with links, images and other content that help to give the impression that your brand is an expert to be trusted. The purpose of the business, as well as the individual goals of each page, are unique to your brand, and so you should be careful to make sure that any designs you wish to imitate share your objectives.
There are two lessons, however, that are nearly universal across all types of online businesses. So let’s take a look at these two lessons from powerhouse brands that serve as excellent examples of great Web design.

Colors matter, and each color has unique psychological effects and interpreted meanings. Blue conveys a feeling of trust and formality, and green is often used for fresh and innovative feels. Other colors have commonly believed effects and usages, and any search for “color psychology” will bring up many examples and interpretations of the impact of color on the human psyche.
Amazon has always been a market leader when it comes to innovating based on color. The company’s signature orange “call to action” button has been found to have a higher conversion rate for many businesses, and it’s no surprise that Amazon has continued to utilize that color on its most important (and profitable) design elements. When you need action, use a color that is believed to incite action. Always conduct ongoing tests to ensure that color is performing well for you.

Similar to the way the colors can invoke specific meaning and emotion for a user, typography has a personality of its own. Typing in all capital letters is commonly known as “Internet yelling”, for example. Typography takes that phenomenon a bit further (and much more subtly), to deliver a feeling that you want to convey to your users.
Take Apple’s shopping section as a great example of typography. The font is the company’s signature subhead/heading font, which conveys a light and clean simplicity, along with an air of newness and freshness. Apple clearly prioritizes typography in all its design, and the company historically has been a leader in use of fonts.
When you have great design skills, and apply methods that are working well for powerful brands, you’ll be able translate those skills to nearly any type of web page, toward any type of purpose. For instance, if you have a microwave buying guide online, that’s the type of page where you’ll want to apply the right color scheme and typography to convey a formal leadership tone, as well as a clear direction toward the call to action. Split-testing different combinations of color and typography will eventually tell you when you hav a clear winner!

View the original article here
Anthony Chukshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16687995634510629623noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8848797377675876536.post-1462902333039290602013-12-22T14:19:00.000-08:002013-12-22T14:20:41.830-08:00
Blending colors naturally into a layout can be tough. It requires practice and some conceptual ideas regarding user interfaces & web design trends. I love taking a closer look at unique websites focused on a general theme or concept. Matching colors are just one dimension in the ever-growing landscape of web design.

For this gallery I’ve put together 24 remarkable websites focusing on the color purple. Last year I wrote a similar article and wanted to follow-up with this secondary gallery. I’m looking for websites using a mixture of various color shades, background textures, hyperlinks, UI elements, and similar notions that other designers may replicate.
<A Web designers have been following along, and this has lead to a multitude of unique ideas being expressed in current layouts. Any typical piece of an interface can be enhanced from more common, traditional ideas.

This gallery focuses on a collection of brilliant forms which handle user input. Registration and login forms are specifically popular on practically every website. These examples often include text fields, checkboxes or radios, and a final submit button.

With all the recent economic doom and gloom you may have decided to take matters into your own hands and go freelance. There are several hurdles you must overcome to be a successful freelancer, but here are some tips to get you started:

So you’ve decided to go freelance and you’re now out in the world on your own. This clean slate gives you a chance to create a whole new identity for your business, whether you go for your own name (Joe Bloggs Design) or something a bit more grandiose (Phoenix Design Solutions Ltd.)

Remember to choose a domain name for your website that is relatively short and easy to spell, otherwise people won’t be able to find you. 123-Reg offer .co.uk domains for only £3.49 per year.

As a web designer you’ll know the importance of good design. Keep it clean, simple and easy to read, and showcase what you’re capable of. An ‘About Me’ type section can help give people a taste of what you’re like as a person.

Outline what you do (your services) in plain English. You can write all the technical jargon in the world, but if people don’t know what it means it may as well be written in an alien language. Examples of previous work can help you get your point across.

Contact details are vital because if they’re not there, how are people going to contact you?

Referrals will always be an important source of work for the budding freelancer. Tell your friends, relatives, past colleagues and even strangers you might happen to strike up a conversation with on the train or at a wedding.

Get creative. Why should people hire you? If you do the same things as every other person out there, then you’re not giving people a reason to call you. Make some creative business cards with Moo.com and leave them in random locations for example, and you never know who could pick them up.

Even though you’re a one-man band, you still need to cover yourself. First of all, it’s vital to set yourself up as a sole trader within three months of starting. Failure to do so can lead to a fine of up to £100. Next you’ll need professional indemnity insurance. PI Insurance covers legal costs and expenses when a claim is made against you, and any compensation or costs that may subsequently be awarded following professional negligence, unintentional breach of confidentiality and/or copyright, defamation and libel, loss of documents or data or loss of money or goods (for which you are responsible). It’s easy to search for companies which offer this sort of protection for business; visit Markel Direct for more information – they offer cover with limits from £50,000 up to £5 million.

View the original article here
Anthony Chukshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16687995634510629623noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8848797377675876536.post-69970757325634694462013-12-18T18:52:00.000-08:002013-12-18T18:52:01.101-08:00

On the Internet today, there’s a “need for speed.”

Customer behavior is one thing; online behavior for every customer is totally something else. The speed at which a website loads is the moment of truth. Unless the website loads properly and quickly enough, the customer is long gone (unlike traditional business outlets where customers tend to be slightly more patient with lags and delays). The web is a medium that demands precision, focus, and multiple elements working together to get it all in sync with the primary purpose of the website.

Thanks to the rise of the mobile web, we now have responsive websites. Surprisingly, even responsive designs don’t necessary load quick. On one hand, there are many websites that are not responsive yet. For those websites that have gone the extra mile with a mobile website or a responsive design, the websites still don’t load quickly. While responsive design will demand a series of courses, books, and reams of information by itself, our focus here is to find out how to speed up responsive websites. Here’s how you can speed up responsive websites:

Determine Primary Use and Deploy Responsive Design

The ultimate struggle between designers and marketers is this: designers focus on the design and marketers want the website to help convert. Often, these goals belong to two different sets of professionals. As a result, websites suffer.

The first rule in website design is to make sure that the website is developed by designers to fulfill a marketing need. While designers can play with their tools, techniques, and inputs, the goal should align with that of the marketers (or business owners): to generate leads and convert customers.

If you are designing responsive landing pages, the goal of the page is to get visitors to convert. If it’s a magazine or an online publication, then the responsive version of the magazine should load quickly without the graphics and images (at least not all of them).

If you are working with marketers or business owners, bring them on board. Collaborate with others and make sure everyone is on the same page while designing web pages.

Go for Mobile-First Design

Mobile first design calls for simplicity and focus. It’s a method of design that streamlines your work and helps you design websites exclusively for mobiles. The idea is to create websites that’d have content suitable for display on mobile phones taking mobile phone real estate into account. According to Frank Kurland of McKnight Kurland, mobile reaches about 87% of the world’s population. That’s why, mobile first design is a mandate and not optional. Vincent Jordan talks about mobile first and insists on building responsive or mobile websites for experience first and responsive design next in terms of priority.

Responsive Design is All about Simplicity

Strip. Strip. Strip. Anything that takes time to load has to go out of the window. While desktop versions of websites can have a lot more design elements than the responsive versions, it’s important to identify what exactly should show up on a responsive website. Responsive design doesn’t have to be identical design (identical to the desktop version, that is). A large part of “responsive” has to do with “adaptation” depending on the device customers are using to access websites. What goes well on a desktop version might also go well (with adaptation) on tablets but will not work on smart phones at all.

Compress

Performance of webpages depends on the elements that have to load when the website is called for. Page size, images, text, and many other elements perform best on responsive design when they are minimal in quantity and are compressed well. In responsive design, you’d only send out what’s really needed to the target device. Compress CSS and JavaScript in general using tools such as Compass. If JavaScript needs compression, you may also use tools such as UglifyJS. As text or fonts can cause display issues too, use FitText to auto-update font size and configure display options with maximum and minimum size options.

Note: FitText cannot be used for entire paragraphs. It’s best used for headlines.

Minimize Loading Time

Johan Johansson of Smashing Magazine wrote a helpful post on how to make your websites faster on mobile devices. He also quotes research findings on how more than 80% of people are disappointed with the experience of browsing the web on their mobile phones. At least 64% of smartphone users expect websites to load in less than 4 seconds. That’s your window of opportunity. Perhaps you might want to take it as your goal or benchmark to achieve faster loading responsive websites.

Reduce Dependencies

You can achieve faster loading times by reducing dependencies by loading images through CSS, keeping external style sheets to a minimum, use CSS3 instead of images, use image sprites, font icons, avoiding inline frames, and use inline scalable vector graphics (SVG). Linda Bustos of Get Elastic also suggests eliminating redirects to m-dot sites, using fast and reliable CDN (Content Delivery Networks).

She also suggests using responsive images and to reduce client-side processes to a minimum by reducing use of JavaScript, avoiding widgets, and using specific server side techniques such as RESS.

Test, Test, Test

Just as testing is a necessary element for marketing optimization; design also needs testing as a part of your workflow. If you have a design already, put it to test. If you are about to create design from scratch, prepare to test it out on various parameters such as browser tests, OS tests, device tests, speed, utility, links, navigation, aesthetics, and even conversions. Use tools such as Optimizely or MobiTest.

Testing gives you real-time feedback using which you can make your responsive websites worthy enough for your clients to benefit from.

Today’s demand is to reach customers no matter what kind of computing device they might use. Design across browsers, device types, and make sure that websites can be access irrespective of connection speeds.

It’s challenging, but it’s rewarding.

Abhishek Agarwal is Director of Business Development at Rightway Solution, a premium mobile app development company. Their website has been around since 2004 and the goal is to provide non-mainstream tech news. It’s a great experience and you can find topics ranging from comics, movies, Internet stuff, and tech gadgets.

Recently they launched a new online venue called the ForeverGeek Kickstarter Store. Products are not actually sold through ForeverGeek – but it acts more like a single aggregated list of cool new projects. Everything is hand-picked by editors and the store is updated frequently.

The whole purpose is to save your time when searching for interesting stuff. KickStarter is huge and there are so many new projects listed every week. The ForeverGeek Store helps to give some attention and shine the spotlight onto diverse products. The store has many categories such as music, video games, fashion, and other similar topics.

Looking over the website design it seems to provide quite an easygoing experience. Each product is featured prominently and the whole interface feels clean & appealing.

Each of the selected Kickstarter projects has already been successfully funded and created. This means you can pick and choose what interests you, then check out more details on Kickstarter. Indie Game: The Movie is a great example that actually leads out to its own website.

Definitely check out the store and see what you think! Even if you don’t typically browse Kickstarter or support these kinds of projects, the stuff can be surprisingly affordable and very funny too.

View the original article here
Anthony Chukshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16687995634510629623noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8848797377675876536.post-67476316378681911482013-12-18T10:11:00.000-08:002013-12-18T10:11:00.100-08:00
I always love to find personal sites that reference a photo of the person. It gives visitors a better look into who they are. Some creatives may be uncomfortable with this, while others simply adore the spotlight. Either way it is a wonderful design idea for Internet-based portfolios.

If you also like this idea then take a look at these awesome websites. Each one features an individual who does some form of creative work be it design, music, writing, or otherwise. I hope these layouts can provoke other ideas in designers who may want to utilize this same feature. It grew rapidly over these past few years and has sponsored thousands of amazing products. Designers who appreciate the craft will really get a kick out of many items on Kickstarter.

For this post I’ve catalogued 10 recent found in Kickstarter with a beautiful presentation. Most have completed funding and you can locate many sites online to buy Kickstarter products if you like anything you see.

As somebody who frequently writes in notebooks wishing I had a white board, this idea knocked my socks clean off my feet. The Wipebook saves all your written notes when flipping between pages. But it is also really easy to wipe away your content without any leftover marks on the page.

The product comes with 25 sheets each with 2 sides for a total of 50 pages. It uses the typically-sized 11×8.5 inches along with a marker and eraser cap. You might check out their personal site for more details.

Although the practical use of this item is fairly low, it’s still a fun design. You can easily hide your favorite alcoholic beverage of choice in a crafty NES cartridge. You simply pop off the top piece and drink to your heart’s content. If you sneak off into the corner it might be an easier solution than carrying a regular drink flask.

Line up your jokes ‘cause this may be the coolest invention since sliced bread. Are you hands freezing in the winter? Don’t you wish there was some article of clothing to keep them warm around the house? These toast-fashioned hand warmers are bluetooth enabled to work as you move.

Freedom is a key part of how they work. You still have access to use all your fingers. Plus no wires getting in the way! Simply charge the battery for 15-30 minutes and you’re good for a couple hours of continuous warmth. These toasty slices also come with heat settings for low, medium, and high.

This unique wrap wallet is meant to cradle your paper bills in a systematic format. Instead of forcing them to bend or contort in your pocket, this elegantly wraps them up into a small rectangle which could fit almost anywhere.

It has enough space for 10 cards and a smaller ID display. It certainly isn’t your typical wallet design style. An interesting concept about Wrap Wallet is the reliable handling of paper bills and plastic cards together without much conflict.

This video totally blew me away watching these guys prototype and perfect their idea. Filtering your own water in a single bottle proves that we have come a long way. Although you do need a readily-available water source, this product can save you lots of time and worry on-the-go.

It was released by KOR Water along with their line of similar water vessels. You can learn a whole lot more about Nava from their website. And if you have certain questions the team is open for inquiries.

The art of directing is overlooked by many in the film industry. Even a professional may struggle to figure out the perfect camera angle for any given shot. This interesting product allows cameramen to fix the recorder into place without shakiness or hasty movements. Stability has never been so easy.

Take a look at their Kickstarter video to get a better understanding of how it works. Obviously this is only useful to a very targeted market. But any design lover can truly appreciate the amount of work put into this Kickstarter. Take a look at the BeSteady website including tech specs, prices, and dealers for purchase.

The wireless realm of Bluetooth has become very normal within our high-tech society. The Bongo is a beautiful representation of this wireless technology in action. The design itself is even customizable with different shades of bamboo, or even various patterns in the speakers. It also comes with an auxiliary connector for your typical iPhone or iPod Touch.

Although I honestly have no idea how this works – it does look pretty sweet. The product is made out of walnut and polished to create an exterior capable of withstanding heavy hurling objects. Keys, watches, lighters, apparently this can hold it all. And the creators offer custom-made designs based on your own preference.

Right away the video for this product had me astonished. The marketing approach drives you into a state of wild curiosity attempting to figure out their plan. I don’t think I could use something like this in my bed… I suppose I prefer the chaos. But this is one fascinating idea that I know people would love trying for themselves.

The team launched a Smart Bedding website that you can check out for more information. It has a copy of the demo video along with a very simple purchasing system. You construct the exact bedding you need and they custom build to order.

You know people who keep their loose change in big plastic jugs? Well this is kinda like that, except it’s prettier on the eyes. The Vertical Coin Bank is produced by Revol Design and shows a true innovation with crafty home decor. If you love saving up coins and might have the spare room for this neat contraption, then take a peek at their wonderful presentation video.

View the original article here
Anthony Chukshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16687995634510629623noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8848797377675876536.post-14660259041845726542013-12-17T21:02:00.000-08:002013-12-17T21:02:00.907-08:00

As soon as your website goes live it technically has a global reach. Anyone from Toronto to Tokyo can access your little corner of cyberspace, but that doesn’t mean they will. Distances might not mean much online, but linguistic and cultural differences remain. It takes a little forethought and planning to successfully reach across these divides.

Localization or standardization?

English remains the single most widely used language online and can often serve as a lingua franca or working language. But it still only accounts for around a quarter of total usage. Research shows that users put far more trust in sites written in their own native language, even if they speak English as a second language. A recent survey conducted across the European Union found that 48% of internet users would use English language sites on occasion, but almost 90% said that when given a choice, they always visited a website in their own language. Almost half reported they would never use foreign language sites to search for or buy products online.

Good translation is a must when it comes to reaching new markets, but you might also wish to go beyond simply translating your content. Fully localizing your sites for different target markets is a more involved process that can include transcreation – retaining your core message but adapting it to the cultural expectations of your new audience – to readjusting the whole look and design of your website.

Use the right tools

Using the right tools from the start can give you a measure of flexibility when it comes to adapting your main website for different target audiences. Using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), for example, allows you to keep your content and design separate. This in turn makes it far easier to translate content or alter elements of the design without having to start the whole page again from scratch.

You will also need a flexible encoding tool. Unicode UTF-8 is ideal as it is compatible with over 90 written scripts and is supported by most common browsers. You can easily switch to non-Latin scripts such as Hebrew or Arabic, as well as incorporating ‘non-standard’ Latin characters such as the German Ä, Ö, Ü and ß.

Navigation strategies

In languages such as English, which are read from left to right, navigation bars are often installed vertically on the left hand side of the page. This isn’t the best position for languages which read from right to left, such as Hebrew or Arabic. One option is switching vertical menu and navigation bars from the left to the right of the page. But you can save a lot of hassle if you build in horizontal bars at the top of the page from the start. CSS also allows you to simply switch from left to right (LTR) to right to left (RTL) scripts by setting the ‘dir’ attribute as [dir="ltr"] or [dir="rtl"].

Cultural differences

Anthropologist and cross-cultural researcher Edward T. Hall advanced the theory of low-context and high-context cultures. Low-context cultures, such as North America and Germany, do not draw much information from the context of a situation. They require clear information and explicit instructions.

High-context cultures, such as much of Latin America and Asia, take more information from the context of a situation and cultural expectations. Things that are left unsaid can often be equally or more important than things that are explicitly stated.

In web design terms this can mean providing clear and unambiguous written text for low-context cultures compared to a more intuitive and interactive graphical alternative for high-context cultures. Consider the difference between Coca Cola’s German and Chinese sites.

The German site is almost tabular in form, with clearly defined boxes and relevant information.

The Chinese site, meanwhile, features a more intuitive, graphically-oriented design with hardly any text on the landing page.

Use of images

As well as the differing weight given to images and interactivity depending on the target culture, there are a number of further issues to take into account. Firstly, all images should be culturally sensitive. Even where images are neutral and unlikely to cause offence, viewers may connect better with culturally relevant symbols or images of people of a familiar ethnicity and dress. If your target market does not have wide access to high-speed broadband connections or is highly mobile-oriented, be wary of using too many high-resolution images and animations that can affect loading times.

Color connotations

Different colors can have different connotations depending on the culture of the viewer. Red can mean ‘danger’ or ‘passion’ for western audiences for example, but is more connected with ‘celebration’ or ‘good luck’ in China. Similarly, white is associated with weddings in the West but with funerals or mourning in much of the East. This doesn’t mean that certain colors will automatically be assigned a meaning regardless of context but it can help you create the right feel and tone if you are aware of the general color connotations within the country you’re targeting.

Christian Arno is the founder of Lingo24, Inc. translation company. Launched in 2001, Lingo24, Inc. now has more than 200 employees spanning four continents and clients in more than 60 countries. Internet users have become more crafty getting into native applications and using their mobile browsers for access on-the-go. You hardly even need a wifi connection because of the wide distribution of cell towers across the globe.

This also means web developers should grow accustomed to this pattern and start formulating ideas for handling the difference in technology. In this post I want to check out some resources you may use to build unique mobile interfaces. Native applications are much too expensive and time-consuming without already learning the ropes. But creating a separate mobile website or mobile webapp is a whole lot simpler, cheaper, and quicker to launch up online.

If you have never heard of CSS3 media queries I would highly recommend checking out some related articles to understand the terminology. If you have an existing website layout it may be pretty simple to re-size and update based on the browser’s adjusted maximum width value.

So when managing a re-sized environment you can tell CSS to force your page body to appear smaller or even liquid based on percentages. Anyone who isn’t familiar with CSS3 media queries will be able to pick up the basics in just a few minutes of reading. But getting them to work properly on your site could take days or even weeks of tweaking.

Designers who prefer to build from scratch often ridicule the notion of templates. I have found that baseline wireframes provide a very solid ground framework for getting started. But even using a free mobile website template can provide much-needed support and save you time rewriting code from the beginning.

There are so many fantastic templates out on the web, it is tough recommending a specific type because each website is so unique. Think about the needs of your visitors and what they are expecting. You want to provide a seamless experience when transitioning from desktop onto smaller screen devices. Templates provide the glue for important pieces like navigation, touch-enabled elements, and responsive media(images, video, etc).

Do not pick up a template just because it looks nice enough. Make sure you have a plan of action that you can realistically put into motion. A single template sitting on your hard drive won’t mean much if you cannot get it worked into your website in a meaningful fashion.

If you do have a separate mobile template then it would be so much easier to place this in a separate domain or sub-domain. You can think of using something like m.spyrestudios.com which would become an auto-redirect for users visiting on mobile. Obviously the domain should be related to your website – but this isn’t hard once you understand the JavaScript logic behind it all.

As someone who typically uses a mobile browser myself, I actually prefer this method whenever possible. Mobile Safari and other similar browsers allow the zoom feature which is natural and useful for typical websites. But offering a mobile-specific layout with modified content is sometimes easier in order to save the page of unnecessary clutter.

Just remember to always offer the visitor a link back to your original website subdomain. This is important because mobile users can’t force their way back to the main site if the redirect is automatic. But handling the process with JavaScript detection or browser cookies allows for much greater flexibility.

There are probably tens of thousands of articles found online in relation to mobile-centric web design. I know that most creative artists do not have the time to read through even 4 or 5 of these posts. This small list includes recent and very relevant articles on mobile design that may spur new ideas when creating your next website project.

I know this isn’t a complete compilation but I do hope it provides an initial starting point. The mobile web has transformed quickly in recent years, so who knows what could happen looking ahead towards the future. The best solution is keeping yourself informed by reading articles and staying focused on your end goal. Feel free to share any other resources or comments you have in relation to mobile website designs.

View the original article here
Anthony Chukshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16687995634510629623noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8848797377675876536.post-89923287294345199702013-12-17T13:32:00.000-08:002013-12-17T13:32:00.871-08:00
Blogs are usually full of different posts all with varying degrees of popularity. Readers don’t always know how to find related posts without using the search feature. It helps to build smaller widgets right into the page that can automatically sort through content based on different criteria.

In this tutorial I want to demonstrate how we can build a sidebar-based tabbed ajax widget to display related blog posts. Many times these widgets feature some type of thumbnail image, along with other metadata like the author and publication date. I’ve kept things real simple mostly focusing on the jQuery animations. Take a peek at my live demo to understand what the final outcome should be.

Live Demo – Download Source Code

First I am creating a new blank HTML5 document with a couple related files. The first is a local copy of jQuery and the second is a styles.css stylesheet. This will include some page resets along with the generic layout formatting.

Tabbed Ajax Content Widget - SpyreStudios Demo

The overall webpage is built to appear like a very simple weblog. The left-hand content uses some filler Ipsum to look like blog posts. While in the sidebar you will find a small widget using 3 top links organizing newest, popular, and random articles.

Newest Popular Random

I really like this design because it is sleek and conforms nicely into any layout. It would not require much effort to extend the design into more colorful examples to fit your own project. We also use a coordinated CSS class of .active to check which tab of content is being displayed at any given time.

Aside from my typical resets I have also included a new Google Webfont named Crete Round for our headings. The div IDs #left and #sidebar are both set to fixed widths floated within a clearfix container. This also means the widget itself has been set to a fixed width. It should be noted that mobile users may not even want to use this widget, and you might consider hiding it beyond a certain device width using media queries.
#w { display: block; margin: 0 auto; width: 800px; padding: 11px 16px; background: #fff; border: 7px solid rgba(0,0,0,0.35); -webkit-border-radius: 4px; -moz-border-radius: 4px; border-radius: 4px;}#left { display: block; float: left; width: 460px; padding: 0 7px; margin-right: 14px;}#sidebar { display: block; float: left; width: 280px;}
The actual navigation links are centered in their own heading element. If you wanted to use tabs it would require some type of border, or possibly a box shadow surrounding the link. I’ve instead opted to use a simple background effect on hover which sticks to the active link. Also the full tabbed posts widget is fixed at 250px width for the sake of this demo.
/** tabber widget **/#tabbed-posts { display: block; width: 250px; margin: 0 auto; padding-top: 25px;}#tabbed-posts .navlinks { display: block; padding: 14px 0; font-size: 1.4em; text-align: center;}#tabbed-posts .navlinks a { text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal; margin-right: 5px; color: #588bc4; padding: 5px 7px; -webkit-border-radius: 3px; -moz-border-radius: 3px; border-radius: 3px;}#tabbed-posts .navlinks a:hover, #tabbed-posts .navlinks a.active:hover { background: #dde8f4;}#tabbed-posts .navlinks a.active { font-weight: bold; background: #e8f0f9;}
Now this block of code shouldn’t come as any surprise. Everything can be styled nicely if we include floating elements with a clearfix container. The biggest difference comes within each content section of the page. I am using three divs with the class .tabcontent and they each contain an unordered list of links.
.tabcontent ul li { padding-bottom: 5px; padding-top: 7px; border-bottom: 1px solid #cbcbcb;}.tabcontent ul li h3 { font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 1.4em; font-weight: normal;}.tabcontent ul li h3 a { display: block; width: 100%; color: #6a6e7a; padding: 3px 0; font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: 1px 1px 0 #fff;}.tabcontent ul li h3 a:hover { background: #dde8f4;}.tabcontent ul li h3 .featuredpic { display: block; float: left; margin: 0; margin-right: 3px; padding: 3px 4px;}.tabcontent ul li h3 .featuredpic img { display: block;}
The first div is always displayed on pageload because it focuses on the “newest” posts. As you click between links it’ll auto-hide the main content in order to show the new list. Generally this would require additional classes but I’ve opted to instead write inline CSS styles for display:none. This helps when dealing with jQuery’s fadeIn() and fadeOut() methods that use inline styles anyways.

In any website this widget is basically useless without some JavaScript to handle the dynamic content switching. It isn’t too overly-complicated so anybody with some familiarity in jQuery should be able to follow along. I have broken down my script into two blocks of code so that it is easier to understand.
$(function(){ $('#tabbed-posts .navlinks a').on('click', function(e){ e.preventDefault(); if($(this).hasClass('active')) { return; }
When somebody clicks on any of the anchor elements within .navlinks we first prevent the default action from loading. We simply do not want the HREF value loaded into the address bar. I’m then checking if the clicked link already has a class of .active then we know it’s already displayed and we don’t need to do anything. If the clicked link is already active then the jQuery return command will end the function immediately without processing any further codes.
else { var currentitm = $('#tabbed-posts .navlinks a.active').attr('id'); if(currentitm == 'newpostslink') { var currentlist = $('#tabbed-posts-new'); } if(currentitm == 'popularpostslink') { var currentlist = $('#tabbed-posts-popular'); } if(currentitm == 'randompostslink') { var currentlist = $('#tabbed-posts-random'); } var newitm = $(this).attr('id'); if(newitm == 'newpostslink') { var newlist = $('#tabbed-posts-new'); } if(newitm == 'popularpostslink') { var newlist = $('#tabbed-posts-popular'); } if(newitm == 'randompostslink') { var newlist = $('#tabbed-posts-random'); } $('#tabbed-posts .navlinks a').removeClass('active'); $(this).addClass('active'); $(currentlist).fadeOut(320, function(){ $(newlist).fadeIn(200); }); } // end if/else logic }); // end event handler});
Otherwise the link is not active and we begin the transition process. My widget is fairly circumstantial based on IDs I’ve written into the code myself. You should update these ID values based on your own code samples and which labels can work well for your project. currentitm is a variable targeting the current link while currentlist targets the currently-active container div .tabcontent, which each use their own unique identifier.

We then generate new variables which should be displayed after the animation finishes hiding the old content. newitm pertains to the new link while newlist targets the new div container. The switching process is very easy by using addClass() and removeClass() coupled with the jQuery fading methods.

One point worth noting is the fadeOut() method has to complete before the fadeIn() animation will be called. To ensure this happens I have written a callback function which only runs after the fade out completes. Then inside this callback function we can execute the display of our new tab content list, all of which should complete animating within less than 60 seconds.

Live Demo – Download Source Code

I usually love finding these smaller related widgets in sidebar designs because they show just how much is possible in modern blog layouts. CMS engines like WordPress have open APIs that allow you to build these widgets from custom-coded SQL queries. I have been really impressed with modern design trends and I would expect these widget ideas to continue advancing further into the future.

View the original article here
Anthony Chukshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16687995634510629623noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8848797377675876536.post-16219627694480452932013-12-17T08:54:00.000-08:002013-12-17T08:54:00.375-08:00
Developing over WordPress has become so easy that anybody familiar with HTML/CSS could get started right away.
