During the Kabbalat Shabbat service as we welcome the Holy Sabbath, we recite the 97th Psalm which includes the following words “Tzedek Umishpat Mechon Kis’o” - Righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.

There is no portion in the entire Torah which better exemplifies the centrality of both righteousness and justice than Parashat [...]

Dear Friends,

This Shabbat we read Parashat Yitro (Jethro) which, among other things, contains Aseret Hadibrot, the Ten Commandments, which are considered by many the cornerstone of Western Civilization. It is fascinating, however, that this portion, which contains this Decalogue, is named after Moses’ non-Jewish father-in-law, Jethro, who happened to be a Midianite priest.

The rabbis often [...]

That is because there are three songs mentioned in the biblical readings for this Sabbath. Following the dramatic parting of the Red Sea, the Children of Israel broke into a song called Shirat Hayam - the Song of the Sea. This Shabbat in Parashat Vaera, we continue reading the epic story of the exodus from Egypt. It is during this portion that Moses and his brother Aaron advocate for the People of Israel and demand their freedom from Pharaoh. Pharaoh refuses their petition and therefore the plagues commence.

Now, thousands of years after the exodus, [...]
