The 2014 draft class at wide receiver was supposed to be a once-in-a-generation group.

Odell Beckham Jr., Sammy Watkins, Mike Evans, Kelvin Benjamin and Co. were quickly shaping up as the quarterback class of ’83 for their particular position.

Except that legendary ’83 group of signal callers, led by John Elway, Jim Kelly and Dan Marino, never really had a sequel. On the other hand, the ’14 WR class could end up being the football version of the blockbuster Fast & Furious 6, which was recently followed by Furious 7, the film with the biggest April opening in Hollywood history.

Three of last year’s WR class — OBJ, Evans and Benjamin — topped 1,000 yards in their freshman NFL campaigns, while Watkins would have if he was complemented by more competent QB play. And don’t sleep on Jordan Matthews, who was one of the more productive slot receivers in the game a season ago and is now the most talented incumbent on Philadelphia’s roster after Jeremy Maclin took his talents back to the Show Me State.

It’s almost ludicrous to expect another set of receivers to duplicate what the ’14 class did but at least some scouts are predicting it.

This time around Alabama’s Amari Cooper and West Virginia’s Kevin White are at the top of the food chain with plenty of others nipping at their heels like speedsters Breshad Perriman of Central Florida and Phillip Dorsett of Miami, along with rangy threats like Lousiville’s DeVante Parker and Arizona State’s Jaelen Strong.

“We’re all confident,” White said of the ’15 WR draft class. “We always talk about (the ’14 group). There’s not doubt in our minds that we can do the same thing as last year’s draft class.”

Cooper is regarded as the most polished product in this year’s bunch but the 6-foot-3 White has surpassed the Crimson Tide star on a lot of big boards because of his upside.

“(We’re) both good receivers,” White said of himself and Cooper. “He’s a great receiver. We catch the ball well. Get YAC yards well. We compete at a high level. A lot of comparisons. A lot that we do different.”

White went the junior college route at first, playing two seasons at Lackawanna College before transferring to WVU, where he caught 35 passes for 507 yards and five touchdowns in ’13 before exploding last year.

“(It was) very difficult,” White said when asked about junior college. “What I learned is that hard work definitely pays off. A lot of guys there had great talent and should have definitely been Division I, but they didn’t work hard, so they didn’t make it up.”

White burst onto the national radar while dueling with Cooper and Alabama, catching nine balls for 143 yards and a touchdown against the mighty SEC powerhouse in the season opener. He kept climbing from there, reaching the century mark in seven straight games and finishing the year with some gaudy numbers, 109 catches for 1,447 yards and 10 TDs.

“Motivation,” White said when asked about his improvement from his junior to senior years. “My junior year I put bad film out there. That’s not the kind of receiver, the kind of player I am. Going into my senior year, I just put everything on the line and (did) what I had to do.”

As impressive as that production looks, though, it was dwarfed by White’s athleticism at the scouting combine in February where the New Jersey native did his best Randy Moss impression, running a scary-fast 4.35 with a frame that enables him to win just about any 50-50 battle with cornerbacks not named Richard Sherman.

“I think I put a lot of fear in defensive backs just because I block so well and when I come off the line I’m quicker than they expect,” he said. “By the time they realize it, it’s already a done deal.”

White invites the comparisons to Moss, perhaps the most physically gifted WR who ever lived.

“The way he attacks the ball in the air. He’s a competitor,” White said of the future Hall of Famer. “He can stretch the field, beating double coverage, triple coverage.”

The lone knock on White to this point is a strength of Cooper’s — route running.

That’s something that can be taught, however, and if White develops the work ethic of a Marvin Harrison, Larry Fitzgerald or Antonio Brown, his ceiling will separate him from just about anyone in any draft class.

“Like I’ve been telling teams. It finally clicked,” White said. “I’m going to do what I have to do. I’m going to work hard and do anything and everything possible that I can.”

So who gets there name called first on April 30, Cooper or White?

“I don’t feel that any receiver can do what I can do,” White said, stating his case. “Whether it’s blocking, creating space, taking a tunnel screen to the house. I do it all. Don’t feel like (other) guys can do what I can do. Not saying that to be cocky, just confident. I feel like I’m one of a kind.”

Indianapolis, IN – Kentucky, Wisconsin, Villanova and Duke were each awarded top seeds for the 2015 NCAA Tournament on Sunday.

Kentucky (34-0) predictably captured the No. 1 overall seed after winning the SEC tourney and becoming just the fourth team to go into the NCAA Tournament undefeated since Indiana in 1976. The three previous teams, including Wichita State last year, did not win the national title.

Those Wildcats, who were last year’s runner-up to Connecticut, will play in the Midwest Region, while the Villanova Wildcats (32-2), who won the Big East regular season and tournament titles, will play in the East Region.

The Big Ten regular season and tourney champion Wisconsin Badgers (31-3) will try to make consecutive trips to the Final Four out of the West Region, while Duke (29-4) is the top seed in the South Region despite not even making the ACC tourney final.

The No. 2 seeds in the field are Kansas, Gonzaga, Arizona and Virginia. Notre Dame, Iowa State, Baylor and Oklahoma comprise the No. 3 seeds, while Maryland, Georgetown, North Carolina and Louisville round out the top four seeds in each region.

Reigning-champion Connecticut lost in the AAC Tournament title game on Sunday and did not garner an at-large bid.

The opening round — referred to as the “First Four” — commences Tuesday with a pair of games and continues Wednesday with two more contests.

In a matchup of No. 11 seeds in the West Region, BYU and Ole Miss will do battle on Tuesday, while the other 11th-seeded clash in the East Region features Boise State and Dayton. That game will take place Wednesday. The Flyers will get the benefit of home-court advantage with all four of the first-round games being played at University of Dayton Arena.

In the 16th-seeded showdowns, Manhattan and Hampton will square off Tuesday for the right to play Kentucky in the Midwest Region. North Florida and Robert Morris will face off Wednesday with the winner playing Duke in the South Region.

The “madness” truly begins with 32 games on Thursday and Friday, and the winners going on to the third round over the weekend.

Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland will host the Midwest Regional semifinals and final on March 26 and 28, the same days the West Regional is decided at Staples Center in Los Angeles. The South’s Sweet 16 and Elite Eight games will be played at NRG Stadium in Houston on March 27 and 29, while the East’s Friday-Sunday scenario takes place at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse.

The Final Four will be April 4 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis with the championship game two nights later.

Cincinnati, OH – Defensive end Michael Johnson is set to return to Cincinnati.

Johnson signed a four-year contract with the Bengals on Sunday and will return to the club a year after leaving as a free agent for Tampa Bay. The Buccaneers released Johnson last week.

The 28-year-old Georgia Tech product posted 26 1/2 sacks in his first five seasons with the Bengals, including a career-high 11 1/2 in 2012.

“Our entire organization is just ecstatic about getting Mike back,” said Bengals coach Marvin Lewis in a statement Sunday. “He’s earned tremendous respect from coaches, teammates and management. He did tremendous things for us while he was here, and we look forward to having him blend back in and uplift us as defensive football team.”

Johnson completed just one season of a five-year, $43.75 million contract he signed with Tampa Bay last March. He dealt with an ankle injury last season and played in 14 games for the Bucs, accumulating four sacks and 27 tackles.

Final Score: Anaheim 4, Nashville 2

Anaheim, CA – John Gibson made 25 saves and the Anaheim Ducks scored four goals in the third period for a 4-2 win over the Nashville Predators on Sunday.

The goals by Ryan Getzlaf, Kyle Palmieri, Nate Thompson and Cam Fowler helped the Ducks take sole possession of first place in the Western Conference over Nashville and tie the New York Rangers for the NHL points lead with 95.

The Pacific Division leaders have won two in a row on the heels of a three- game losing streak and swept the three-game season series with Nashville.

Taylor Beck and Roman Josi both scored in the second period and Pekka Rinne had 24 saves for the Predators, who have lost eight of their last 10 (2-8-0).

“In the last 20 minutes, we completely got away from what we were doing for the first 40. They picked up their game and [our] response was not good,” Predators head coach Peter Laviolette said.

St. Louis beat Dallas 3-0 on Sunday to tie Nashville for first place in the Central Division at 93 points.

Getzlaf finally got the Ducks on the board 2:12 into the third period with a shot from inside the left circle. Palmieri tied the score at 2-2 just over seven minutes later when he ended up with the puck in the right circle after it went off the end boards on a shot.

Thompson and Jakob Silfverberg executed a nice give-and-go for the lead 35 seconds later, with Thompson getting the puck back in the slot to score on a wrister.

Fowler scored on a power play with 5:09 remaining and the Predators didn’t score despite pulling Rinne with more than 2 1/2 minutes remaining.

“Any time you go down a couple, you have to believe that no matter what happens, you can still come back,” Fowler said.

Game Notes

Josi’s goal at 6:49 of the second period came on a power play and gave the Preds a 2-0 lead … The Ducks continue a three-game homestand on Wednesday against Los Angeles … The Predators went 2-2-0 in a four-game road trip. They start a three-game homestand on Tuesday against Minnesota.

Palm Harbor, FL – Jordan Spieth rolled in a bending, 28- foot birdie putt on the third playoff hole Sunday to defeat Patrick Reed and 2008 champion Sean O’Hair and win the Valspar Championship.

After hitting his tee shot on the green at the par-3 17th, Spieth watched as Reed and O’Hair failed to make birdie before rolling in his huge putt for the win. The trio finished regulation tied for the lead at 10-under-par 274.

Spieth, who now has two career victories on the PGA Tour, carded a 2-under 69 in the final round. Reed fired a 5-under 66, while O’Hair shot a 4-under 67 on the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Golf & Spa Resort.

World No. 3 Henrik Stenson hung around throughout most of the day, but his 67 was not quite enough as he ended alone in fourth at 9-under 275.

Third-round leader Ryan Moore, who held a 3-shot lead with six holes to play, made three crucial bogeys down the stretch and was unable to make birdies when it mattered most. Moore shot a 1-over 72 and finished alone in fifth at minus-8.

After a wild finish to regulation play, Spieth, Reed and O’Hair went back to the par-4 18th for the first playoff hole. It was advantage Spieth to start as he hit his second shot to about 10 feet, while O’Hair found the back of the green and Reed hit a greenside bunker.

With an awkward shot out of sand, Reed scrambled for par and O’Hair 2-putted to match. Spieth’s birdie putt just slid by and he made par, forcing a second extra hole.

Now on the par-4 16th, O’Hair was the only player to find the fairway as Reed and Spieth found the rough on the left side. This time it was advantage O’Hair as his approach stopped within 15 feet. Spieth found the back fringe and Reed hit his shot over the green and into the rough.

Reed’s next shot got to within inches of the hole and Spieth missed his putt. O’Hair’s putt for the win just lipped out and the trio headed to the par-3 17th for the third playoff hole.

“I hit the putt I wanted to hit. I mean I hit it right on my line. I thought I made it,” said O’Hair. “I wanted it to go slightly to the left. Patrick’s chip kind of veered off a little bit to the left, so did Jordan’s putt and the grain was going that way, so it just wasn’t meant to be. You know I hit a great putt there and I gave it my all. Jordan’s a great champion.”

For the second time in three holes, Reed found a bunker, while Spieth and O’Hair both hit the green. Reed blasted out of the sand and O’Hair missed his long birdie effort, giving Spieth another shot at the win.

This time the 21-year-old came through by dropping his birdie putt right in the middle of the cup for the victory.

“It was a crazy back nine being three down with six to play. That was the best Michael and I have ever done together,” said Spieth of his caddie Michael Greller.

“And then I mean that putt (to win), that’s just luck, right? I mean if that doesn’t hit the hole, I’ve got a 4-foot slider, but I guess it was my day.”

It was one of the crazier finishes to regulation play, which had Moore leading by three late. Moore, who held a 1-shot lead over Spieth entering the final round, birdied the first along with Spieth.

There was a 2-shot swing at the second as Spieth made birdie and Moore made bogey, giving Spieth the lead at minus-10. Moore then went on to bogey his second straight hole on three, dropping him two shots back.

In the meantime, O’Hair opened with four straight pars before making a birdie at the fifth to pull within three along with Stenson, who made gains on one and two.

While O’Hair dropped a shot on six to fall to minus-6, Spieth also bogeyed No. 5 and Moore was back within a shot.

Then came a huge swing as Moore holed out for eagle from 172 yards out on the par-4 sixth. Spieth made a mess of that hole and went on to bogey. Just like that, it was a 3-shot swing and gave Moore a 2-shot lead at 10-under.

Then Reed’s name surfaced. Reed made nine straight pars from two after opening with a birdie at the first. He then rolled in a gain on 11, pulling him to within three.

Moore tripped to another bogey on 10, getting everyone behind him one shot closer. O’Hair birdied 11 and Reed made it back-to-back gains with another birdie on 12. With Moore at 9-under, Spieth and Reed were a shot back, with O’Hair right behind them two shots behind.

O’Hair made another gain on 12, tying him with Spieth and Reed. Stenson, who bogeyed No. 9, made a late charge starting with a birdie on 14, getting him up to 7-under.

Moore appeared to be in control when he rolled in back-to-back birdies on 11 and 12, giving him a 3-shot lead.

Then came another big swing as Moore tripped to a bogey on 13 and Spieth an 11-foot birdie on 13, pulling him within one.

The others decided to join the party as well, all almost simultaneously. Stenson made it three straight birdies with gains on 15 and 16, Reed rolled in a putt for birdie on 15 and O’Hair birdied 14, pulling them all even with Spieth and one behind Moore.

After Spieth holed a long 32-foot putt for birdie on 14 to join Moore at minus-10, O’Hair also made a gain on 16 to tie the lead.

Then it was Reed’s turn to have a flair for the dramatic as his 31-foot birdie at the last fell. Just like that, with Stenson finishing at minus-9, there was a four-way tie for the lead at 10-under.

“I hit a softy eight in regulation and hit it just past the flag and hit a perfect putt, perfect speed to make it just to get myself in the playoff,” Reed said about his putt on 18.

While the playoff trio held strong and were able to save some big pars down the stretch, Moore fell off with bogeys on 16 and 18 to finish two shots off the pace.

Spieth nearly missed out on the playoff, but he was able to scramble and make a 12-foot par putt at the last.

NOTES: Five of the last seven events on the PGA Tour have gone to a playoff … Spieth’s other win at the 2013 John Deere Classic was also in a playoff … Spieth is only the fourth player since 1940 to win twice on the PGA Tour before turning 22 (Tiger Woods, Sergio Garcia, Robert Gamez) … Both Reed and O’Hair were seeking their fifth win on tour … Reed already has one win this year at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions … With the win, Spieth earned $1.062 million … The tour remains in Florida for the Arnold Palmer Invitational next week, where Matt Every outlasted Keegan Bradley for the title last year.

Manchester, England – Manchester United turned in one of its best performances of the season on Sunday as the club notched a 3-0 win over Tottenham at Old Trafford.

Louis van Gaal’s men have failed to hit top gear very often this season, but the team took firm control of the match with goals from Marouane Fellaini and Michael Carrick in the opening 20 minutes.

Wayne Rooney then made the most of a mistake by the Tottenham defense to make it 3-0 in the 34th, and United coasted home with little trouble from there, moving the side five points clear of fifth-place Liverpool, which travels to Swansea City on Monday.

United came out with purpose and Carrick cut the Tottenham defense open with a through ball into the area on the left that Fellaini tracked down and drove past goalkeeper Hugo Lloris with a first-time shot.

Both players had a hand in United’s second goal as well when Fellaini’s headed effort from a corner kick was blocked. The ball was only cleared as far as Carrick inside the area, and he nodded a well-placed effort inside the right post from 10 yards.

Tottenham was clearly far from its best, and things got worse in the 34th when a giveaway in the defensive third allowed Rooney to carry the ball past two defenders before beating Lloris with a low shot inside the left post.

Spurs offered little going forward, making it an easy evening for United goalkeeper David De Gea, whose only real action in the match came in the final minutes on a close-range shot from Harry Kane.

Chelsea moved six points clear of second-place Manchester City after a 1-1 draw at home against Southampton.

Diego Costa scored after 11 minutes to put the Blues in front, but Southampton equalized from the penalty spot in the 19th courtesy of Dusan Tadic.

Sunday’s other match saw Everton secure a much-needed 3-0 win against Newcastle with goals from James McCarthy and Romelu Lukaku before a late third goal through Ross Barkley.

Sunday, March 15 (All times Eastern)

Houston Rockets (43-22) at Los Angeles Clippers (42-24), 3:30 p.m.

In what could be a possible Western Conference playoff preview, the Houston Rockets will visit the Staples Center Sunday afternoon to face the Los Angeles Clippers, who may get a huge boost in this matinee.

Blake Griffin, who has missed 15 games after surgery to remove a staph infection from his right elbow, could make his return on Sunday afternoon. If not Sunday, then he will return to the Clippers on Tuesday.

The Clippers trail the Rockets by 1 1/2 games for the fourth seed in the Western Conference.

Los Angeles had a two-game winning streak snapped with extreme prejudice Friday night in a 129-99 road loss to the Dallas Mavericks. The Clips opened their two-game road trip with a 12-point victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday.

J.J. Redick had 17 points and DeAndre Jordan chipped in 16 points and 18 rebounds for the Clippers. Jordan hit his first career 3-pointer when he barely beat the shot clock for LA’s first points of the night. He air-balled a free throw later in the quarter.

Chris Paul had 11 points and seven assists, while Matt Barnes scored 14 for the visitors, who went 12-of-32 from 3-point range.

The Mavs were in front 59-51 at the half, then pulled away by shooting 13- of-21 in the third quarter.

“They made shots, but our defense helped them,” Clippers coach Doc Rivers said after the game.

The Rockets have lost two straight after they began this four-game trek with a win over the Denver Nuggets. Houston fell to the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday, then got clobbered by the Utah Jazz, 109-91, on Thursday.

The Rockets had no answer for Rudy Gobert, who scored a career-high 19 points to go along with 22 rebounds.

Corey Brewer went for a team-high 25 points off the bench in the loss, while James Harden was limited to 15 points on 3-of-13 shooting.

Donatas Motiejunas had 13 points on 6-for-12 shooting and Terrence Jones registered a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

“They just dominated the paint. We couldn’t make a jump shot for a while there. They played well, dominated the glass. We had nothing for them,” Rockets coach Kevin McHale said.

The Jazz held a 57-37 advantage on the boards.

Gordon Hayward’s free throws closed the half with under a second on the clock to give the hosts a 53-43 lead. Joe Ingles canned a 3-pointer with under 3 1/2 minutes left in the third that stretched Utah’s margin to 22 and it cruised the rest of the way to extend its winning streak.

The Rockets return home for three straight against the Orlando Magic, Denver Nuggets and Phoenix Suns.

Houston bettered the Clippers by five on Feb. 25 to halt a six-game series losing streak. LA is 11-3 recently versus the Rockets and has won seven straight at the Staples Center against Houston.

Michigan State (23-10) vs. (6) Wisconsin (30-3)

Sunday, March 15, 3:30 p.m. (ET)

GAME NOTES: Winners in all but one game over the last two months, the sixth- ranked Wisconsin Badgers try to keep the good times rolling on Sunday as they face off against the Michigan State Spartans in the title game of the Big Ten Conference Tournament at the United Center.

Wisconsin, the top seed in this tourney, cruised to a 16-2 mark in league play during the regular season, losing only to nationally ranked Maryland on the road just a few weeks ago and a stunning blow by lowly Rutgers in New Jersey back in January. Since the head-scratching setback against the Scarlet Knights, the Badgers have been on cruise control.

The squad began pursuit of just their third Big Ten Tournament title with a 71-60 victory against Michigan in the quarterfinals, followed by a 71-51 triumph over Purdue on Saturday afternoon.

Wisconsin, which hasn’t won the event since defeating Illinois (61-48) in 2008, played in the championship round as recently as two years ago, losing to Ohio State by seven, 50-43.

As for the third-seeded Spartans, who won this event last year with a 69-55 triumph over in-state rival Michigan, they too picked up a double-bye in the tournament thanks to a top-four finish during the regular season. The quest for a fifth tournament crown started with a 76-67 victory against sixth-seeded Ohio State on Friday and carried on with a 62-58 upset of second-seeded and eighth-ranked Maryland on Saturday.

These teams met only once during the 2014-15 regular season, with the Badgers capturing a 68-61 win at home on the first of the month. In that contest, Frank Kaminsky erupted for a game-high 31 points and pulled down eight rebounds for the hosts, while Bryn Forbes accounted for 21 points on a perfect 5-of-5 shooting behind the 3-point line for MSU.

As a result of the recent victory for the Badgers, the all-time series now stands at 75-62 in favor of Michigan State, according to MSU sources.

Michigan State trailed by as many as 16 points less than nine minutes into the game on Saturday versus the Terrapins and appeared ready to retreat to the locker room, but the second half saw the Spartans dial up the defensive pressure and take down the Big Ten newcomers by four.

Travis Trice dropped in 20 points for the Spartans, followed by Branden Dawson with 17 and eight boards, while Matt Costello delivered 10 points off the bench on 4-of-5 shooting from the floor. In an odd way, having Denzel Valentine shoot just 1-of-8 from the field, 1-of-7 behind the 3-point line, resulting in just three points, might actually be a good sign given that MSU was able to fight through his struggles and still come out on top.

Heading into play on Sunday, Valentine was still the second-leading scorer for the Spartans with 14.4 ppg, his 41.1 percent accuracy on the perimeter taking a slight hit from Saturday’s performance. Trice checks in with 15.1 ppg and while he is only 39.4 percent accurate from the floor overall, between he and Valentine they’ve accounted for 316 assists and only 135 turnovers. Some of those feeds have gone to Dawson (11.8 ppg, 9.2 rpg) who has surely created his own scoring opportunities as well with 90 offensive rebounds.

Purdue had been living on borrowed time since this tournament began and even though the Badgers fell behind by seven midway through the first half and trailed by five at the break, Wisconsin had very little trouble turning the tables in the second half of the 20-point decision.

The turnaround was based on a defensive effort that limited the Boilermakers to a mere six field goals in the second half, 16 points in total. Bronson Koenig led four starters in double figures for the Badgers with 19 points, followed by Nigel Hayes and Sam Dekker with 15 apiece and a combined 14 rebounds. Frank Kaminsky had an ordinary day as he dropped in only 12 points, missing all three of his attempts on the perimeter. However, he did fill his stat line with five rebounds, five assists, three blocks and three steals.

Kaminsky, a candidate for national player of the year honors, has been a steady presence as one of the top scorers in the conference with 18.2 ppg. A 55.6 percent shooter who can dominate in the paint with a plethora of moves, the big man has also shown the ability to attack from the outside with 39 percent accuracy from 3-point range. Kaminsky is also the team leader in rebounding (8.1 rpg), assists (86), blocks (51) and steals (30), making him one of a very rare breed indeed.

Giving Kaminsky help at the offensive end and on the glass are Dekker (13.2 ppg, 5.6 rpg) and Hayes (12.1 ppg, 6.5 rpg) as the team beats foes in the scoring department by almost 16 ppg and on the glass by a 6.4 rpg margin.

Sunday, March 15 (All times Eastern)

Boston Bruins (36-22-10) at Washington Capitals (36-23-10), 7:30 p.m.

The Washington Capitals look to avoid a third loss in a row on Sunday evening when they conclude a five-game road trip with a clash against the Boston Bruins.

The Capitals are just 1-3-0 on their swing, dropping recent contests to the New York Rangers and Dallas Stars. Washington was edged 4-2 by Dallas on Friday, giving up three power-play goals.

Curtis Glencross and Evgeny Kuznetsov each lit the lamp for Washington, while Braden Holtby gave up all four goals on 22 shots before getting lifted during the second period. Justin Peters stopped all nine shots he faced in relief.

This slump by the Caps has dropped them six points back of the Pittsburgh Penguins for third place in the Metropolitan Division and they are now tied with the Bruins for the two wild card spots in the Eastern Conference. The clubs are six points ahead of the Florida Panthers and seven up on the Ottawa Senators.

“I need some urgency in our room,” Capitals head coach Barry Trotz said. “We need to play playoff hockey and we’re not to the level that we need to (be).”

Washington played without defenseman Brooks Orpik for a second game in a row, while forward Jay Beagle missed Friday’s loss due to an upper-body ailment.

The Capitals begin a three-game road trip on Monday in Buffalo and it is unknown if Trotz will break up the starts between Holtby and Peters. Holtby is 5-2-0 with a 2.09 goals against average and .940 save percentage in seven games (6 starts) versus the Bruins, while Peters is 1-0-0 with a 4.64 GAA and .866 save percentage in three matchups (2 starts).

Holtby made 29 saves and Alex Ovechkin scored twice in a 4-0 win at Boston on Oct. 11. That was the first of three meetings between the clubs this season and was the Caps’ sixth triumph in the last nine encounters.

Washington has won nine of its last 13 at home in this series.

The Bruins, though, have matched a season high with five straight victories overall, extending that run with Saturday’s 2-0 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Tuukka Rask made 30 saves for his third shutout of the season and Milan Lucic scored in the first period.

Lucic’s tally marked the 11th straight game that Boston has scored the first goal, the longest stretch for the club since it did so in 12 straight from Feb. 3-26, 1990.

“I don’t think we gave them too many great scoring chances,” said Rask following his 26th career shutout. “Defensively, we played a solid game.”

Zdeno Chara added an empty-net goal in the final minute for Boston, which improved to 7-0-1 in its last eight.

Boston hasn’t won six in a row since a 12-game tear from March 2-22, 2014.

(Saturday, March 14)

Final Score: (4) Villanova 69, Xavier 52

New York, NY – After capturing their first Big East Tournament title in 20 years, the Villanova Wildcats may soon be on the way to another gratifying reward.

Dylan Ennis led a sharp offensive display with 16 points and the fourth-ranked Wildcats shined on the defensive end as well in an impressive 69-52 victory over Xavier that had Villanova cutting down the nets at Madison Square Garden for the first time since 1995.

Villanova (32-2) was in control for nearly the entire night in rolling to a school-record 15th consecutive win, one that most likely sealed a No. 1 regional seed when the NCAA Tournament brackets are announced Sunday.

Josh Hart added 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting to lock down tournament MVP honors, while Darrun Hilliard hit a trio of 3-pointers in a 12-point effort for a Wildcats squad that hit on 50 percent of its field goal attempts.

Conversely, the sixth-seeded Musketeers appeared to have little left in the tank after reaching Saturday’s final on a pair of hard-fought narrow decisions over Butler and Georgetown over the previous two days.

Xavier (21-13) was held to a 2-of-15 rate from beyond the arc and shot just 37.9 percent overall while never seriously threatening Villanova after falling behind by double digits late in the first half.

Dee Davis and Jalen Reynolds paced the Musketeers with 13 points each.

A focused Villanova team opened up an early 13-6 lead after burying three straight shots over a 49-second span, then closed the first half with a flourish to put Xavier in a hole it never could get out of.

Consecutive layups by Myles Davis and Reynolds had the Musketeers down just 17-14 with 7 1/2 minutes left in the period, but Villanova responded by hitting its next four shots — including 3-pointers from Hilliard and Phil Booth — during a 10-0 run that stretched the margin to double digits.

Hart drained a triple shortly afterward, and the Wildcats were up by 16 before an Remy Abell trey with 40 seconds left cut Xavier’s deficit to 34-21 at the break.

Villanova hit at a 52 percent clip from the field in the first half and remained red-hot after the intermission, with Hilliard and Ryan Arcidiacono sinking 3-pointers during an 8-0 spurt that increased the lead to 42-21 just over two minutes into the second.

Xavier scored the next six points and later got within 54-41 on Dee Davis’ 3- point play with just over 10 minutes remaining. However, Ennis knocked down a trey on the other end to start a 7-0 run that put any comeback hopes squarely to rest.

Game Notes

Villanova was appearing in its first Big East Tournament final since losing to Boston College in 1997, and captured its lone other title two years earlier by defeating Connecticut … Hart, the Big East Sixth Man of the Year, averaged 17.7 points while shooting 72.4 percent from the floor in the Wildcats’ three tournament wins. The sophomore is the first player to win MVP honors coming off the bench … Xavier played without freshman guard J.P. Macura due to an ankle injury sustained in Friday’s win over Georgetown … The Musketeers, expected to make the NCAA field for the ninth time in 10 years, had won four of their last five tournament finals coming in. All came during their tenure in the Atlantic 10.

Reggie Bush is heading back home to California, as the former USC star running back has agreed to a deal with the San Francisco 49ers.

Bush, released by the Detroit Lions last month, announced his intentions via Twitter on Saturday.

“The best is yet to come #49ers”, Bush tweeted.

Bush delivered his second career 1,000-yard rushing season with the Lions in 2013, but saw his production drop during an injury-plagued 2014 season. Limited to just 11 games, the 30-year-old managed just 297 yards and two touchdowns on 76 carries, though he did record 40 receptions totaling 253 yards.

The nine-year veteran will likely serve as the 49ers’ primary back on passing downs while splitting ball-carrying duties with promising second-year pro Carlos Hyde.

Frank Gore, San Francisco’s leading rusher in each of the last 10 seasons, signed with Indianapolis on Tuesday’s first day of free agency.

Since being selected by New Orleans with the second overall pick of the 2006 NFL Draft, Bush has racked up 466 receptions for 3,489 yards over 116 career games. As a runner, he’s accumulated an additional 5.465 yards and 35 touchdowns.

Following a five-year tenure with the Saints, Bush spent two seasons with the Miami Dolphins, where he ran for a career-best 1,086 yards in 2011, before joining Detroit in 2013.
