This year we did something a little different and produced this video feature on Jake Bugg’s SXSW debut at KCRW’s Day Showcase.

Admittedly, I may regret referring to him as a “tiny little package.” He’s just so young!

Here’s a little about the artist.
Young guitar wiz kid Jake Bugg hit the Radio Day Stage present by KCRW at SXSW as part of a tradition of introducing emerging artists. In the spirit of Public Radio, KCRW was thrilled to host this young talent. Jake Bugg has wowed audiences with his songs and unique sound that harken another era. Check out his 1st performance at SXSW at KCRW’s Radio Day Showcase.

And here’s a little about why we did this.
KCRW has slick arthouse production of live performance down pat. We wanted to get into a mini editorial piece to tell a different story. By teaming up with the folks of 4Wt Media, we were able to let them drive into high impact production. They brought our vision to life and now we have a great little piece of digital content to share – that tells the story of what KCRW and the other public radio stations bring to a town like Austin, during a conference like SXSW!

Wow! I can’t tell you how many times have I needed this graphic to reference what music consumption looks like in the digital space. I originally saw it back in early 2011 and have thought about it a ton of times since. It illustrates 2010′s major music consumption platforms in comparison to one another. You can imagine some things have changed since then, but it’s still so terribly relevant as KCRW continues the pursuit of being more than a radio station. I remember the shock and awe of seeing the initial relative scale pulled back and how Pandora, but even more so YouTube totally dominate the space.

I’d LOVE to see an updated version.
We’ll continue to explore radio in the digital age, but for right now – I just wanted to document the (re)discovery of this heat map, as it is sure to continue to be a reference as we embark.

I was putting some notes together for a document that I may never finish. I wanna save it here for posterity’s sake, or maybe to remind myself that it’s worth working on some more.

It is a look at the growth of KCRW’s Social Media reach over time. I started working at KCRW in late 2009. Admittedly, I know that these are nothing but vanity numbers, and believe me – that is fodder for plenty of time on a soapbox trying to explain why these numbers only tell part of the story…. but you know as well as I do – that in some cases the hard follower count (despite its mere glimpse at the whole picture) is worth touting……….. especially when its trending up so beautifully!

Here’s a screenshot of what platforms I’m tracking.
Because this is a manual effort – you’ll see that some numbers dupe from month to month b/c I didn’t record at that point. Below that is a snapshot of this project that I’m working on for god know’s what reason!

So this happened. The fine folks of NPR gathered with us at the NPR headquarters in Culver City last week to embark upon an 11 week training course for member stations from all over the country. Conversation centered around remaining relevant as digital changes the media landscape. The training is intrinsically pretty news-centric since that is what most stations are focused on. We certainly have plenty room for growth in digital around that area of our programming.

We felt like the big kids in the room at some points, but I found a way to get excited about this initiative — encouraging me to focus some time and effort on communication and education with folks at the station about the potential impact we can make as an organization if we focus on HOW to think about creating content for the web. Work is suddenly more and more about teaching people to fish……… or teaching the horse to drink the water, or whatever idiom I can slay.

The organizers of this event invited me to fill up an hour slot after lunch talking about KCRW’s “identity” in the digital space, which I was happy enough to do, but definitely did not have time to prepare for. Luckily, they were super casual and let it unravel as a more candid conversation than an official presentation with a well appointed slide deck and pictures of cats.

I appreciated the opportunity very much s0, and am happy to put another public speaking notch on my belt. Thanks NPR.

Sitting on an airplane that is in the air that doesn’t provide in-flight wi-fi is the LAST GREAT space for me my mind to truly feel unbound. It’s almost freak outtable at first, as I keep finding myself reaching for some device, fumbling with airplane mode long enough to realize that I don’t have any apps that don’t rely on a connection. It’s hard to imagine that this used to be the way of the world.

I thought to myself though, I’m on a work trip, I should be productive. I’ll do some brainstorming for the newsletter series that Nathan and I have been meaning to kick off for the past few weeks, to outline what “accomplishments” look like in our dept. Thus:

The journey into the new job has taken KCRW down a new path where it comes to our social media. Mostly it has just been a decline in participation.

Instead of takin full responsibility as the sole community manager and status updater, I decided to open up an editorial schedule, put together a group of people at the station that seem well positioned to represent an area of coverage on our social media platforms, and then EDUCATE!

We start with Facebook. I put a schedule into a format that I thought would work. It’s broken out for you to examine here. And some notes appear below. The idea is that we have full coverage and individual voices and areas of coverage with specified times will create a cohesive look at the station overall.

I have tasked myself with physically documenting (thus inventing) the key characteristics of a persona (or perhaps 5) to represent the voice(s) of KCRW. I want to provide the folks that I work with a guide to how to speak on behalf of the station. In theory this gives us a greater chance at distributing social tasks among a group while maintaining a consistent tone.

Meanwhile, I just realized that while I’ve been thinking about this for weeks, I have never taken the time to do the damn thing for myself. I guess because I’m a person, so I don’t need to invent an online persona…….

Yet, at present, a ton of self reflection is the result of my boss’ resignation and it’s made me think about how I market myself. I’ve certainly joked before about how through social media, we as individuals are turning into brands.

At any rate, happenings of late have sparked a lot of ideas for self-improvement. Perhaps that is why, upon gazing out over the backyard tonight, I was led to realize I DO have adjectives that I’d like to consistently apply to my online outreach efforts (and importantly, my public speaking persona.)

It seems like such a simple step. I’ve taken it for granted all this time, just being myflounderinginconsistentself online. Now if I can just gather to balls to hit the publish button without this all resulting in an online identity crisis.

Here are my adjectives.

Gracious

Energetic/Highly Productive

Savvy

Self-Aware

Educating

Opinionated

Humorous (or perhaps humored……)

Here are my areas of interest & expertise.

KCRW

Social Media

Music

Interior Design/DIY/Home Life in LA

Do you have adjectives and specific areas of interest?
Do you think this hokey new-agey bullshit and we should just be ourselves instead of contriving some packaged version to sell online?
Do you use Social Media to sell ideas and establish authority, or are you just there for info and entertainment?
Am I a freak of nature?

I suppose I’ve been quoted before, but not sure it’s ever been among such cool company.

Check me and Omar Epps out here.

I said:

“There’s a battle for the living room and the internet is literally swelling and encroaching on mainstream TV.” ~ Betsy Moyer @BetsyKCRW

To be real, I did say that there’s a battle and this is the concept, but the person that put this together made me sound super good with this one concise sentence!

The context here was in response to a question about KCRW’s The Cue. But it did feel like an important moment in the conversation. For KCRW, I know that being on the digital platforms that people value is important to us, and truly the living room is next.
