Twice a year it’s time to break out the #SupportKCRW hashtag and go to town on our social networks spreading the energy and excitement that is the pledge drive. It’s actually a really fun time for me because I get to see so many kind words, and so much snark from those that endearingly tire of incessant asks.

For KCRW’s Winter 2012 drive, I think I’d like to try and have a little fun with the internet meme savvy crowd. We’ll see just how nerdy the KCRW fanbase gets, or rather how broadly these memes are appreciated.

Technologically Impaired Duck speaks for all those who are less than proficient with various forms of technology in a world where computer knowledge is absolutely essential.

The Y U No meme actually began as Y U No Guy but eventually evolved into simply Y U No, the phrase being generally followed by some often ridiculous suggestion.

You know this guy… THE MOST INTERESTING MAN IN THE WORLD!

Good Guy Greg!

Futurama Fry

I’ll be thinking of some more throughout the evening. The other meme wagon I’m gonna try to jump onto is the “SHIT PEOPLE SAY” meme. Yep, I’ve collaborated with various humorous minds here and there, and am hoping to get some friends to shoot a final collection of punchy quick scripted stereotypical “SHIT THAT KCRW LISTENERS SAY.” We’ll see how it all comes together, I can only cross my fingers there is time to execute!

In other social media marketing for the public radio pledge drive… We are really excited to have accepted the offer from Colin Hanks (ahem,,,,, Tom Hanks’ son) to create

Here’s a time-lapse video that was created by a fan as part of our KCRW Word of Mouth campaign.

Are there Other memes I should be thinking of?

Do you think that this is an effective way to market, or do you think the originality of the meme dies as soon as its born and should be left to rot?

How would you use online marketing to pound the tired audience online, asking them for $upport and donations!

The KCRW Music Mine app for Spotify presents a curated music discovery experience for the Spotify user. AND IT IS DONE! We just got the bill from our development team at PRX. We now impatiently await the approval process from Spotify. I can’t BELIEVE we were able to get this approved and spit out in less than 2 weeks and now we can do nothing but sit on our hands waiting for Spotify.

Promise you this though, once it’s released, you’re gonna love it.

The app presents a grid-like display of up to 100 artists at a time, handpicked by the station’s world famous DJ staff, and is updated daily in tandem with our on air playlists. This means we’ve perfectly married man and machine by AUTOMATICALLY providing you with HAND SELECTED collection of tunes, put together by HUMANS – beautiful KCRW Tastemaker Humans!! Enjoy the regularly refreshed playlists by KCRW DJs, and explore individual artists that have the KCRW stamp of approval. It’s gonna be RAD!

Did you have any favorites?

I recently read an article titled 7 Ways to Use Psychological Influence With Social Media Content. You can read it too, just click that title. It is a great article packed full of awesome insights. All of which deserve some time contemplating when and how I am applying theory to my own efforts.

I was just spouting a little Confucius blurb the other day as Social Media Philosophy. Well, here is that thought again, illustrated further with Edgar Dale’s Cone of Learning.

We just had a strategy meeting for the next blog that we’ll be adding the KCRW Blog Family, Which Way LA? One of the contributors, my friend Saul Gonzalez introduced a great idea for a multi-media blog post, that I really hope to see brought to life. I’ll line out that idea here, and you can feel free to use our example to further your own brainstorming process for how to work Dale’s cone into your content strategy!

… the trick is that it needs to be relevant, meaningful and usable. Adult learning theory says that adults are much more interested in content that addresses a specific problem they are having right now. If you want your social media content to stand out, don’t be afraid to get specific and target your audience very tightly. The more relevant your content is to a specific group of people, the greater attention it will receive.

The Which Way LA? blog is an online hub where the stories of local news and culture will intersect. It’s not just about WHAT is happening in Los Angeles and Southern California, but its about THE PEOPLE THAT IT AFFECTS. Saul’s idea was to put together a multi-media post with a video featurette, highlighting a specific trend in our local area. Specifically, he suggested Los Angeles Record Stores. This ties into local economics, as well as cultural relevancy. It also resonates with the KCRW community of music lovers! After using video to bring attention to some of his chosen record shops in different areas of town, the call goes out to readers to comment and share their favorite record shops. Also, a publicly interactive Google Map could be embedded, like so:

View Los Angeles Record Shops in a larger map

This presents a call to action to the community, encouraging them to become invested in the story, and help contribute to it. They can add their own YouTube videos to the map as well – and really highlight the emergence of small record shops in Los Angeles! They can also learn about new ones from one another in their area! But best of all, they have now touched on every level of the Edgar Dale cone of learning, because they’ve red, heard, seen, SAID & DID share in your content!

Do you use multimedia formats in your blog?

What do you find the most effective, images, video, audio, polling, interactive widgets?

How can we get our communities to SAY & DO for our brands? I have some ideas – stay tuned….. Big things for 2012.

I gave you a sneak peek at Twitter Brand Pages the other day…. even rolled out a TWITTER DESIGN GUIDELINES infographic. Now, here is your sneak peek at Facebook’s new TIMELINE feature for brands. Love you Coca-Cola!

This is very much just a concept that I grabbed from a Mashable announcement. Read their thoughts here. Make sure to cruise the other brand pages they mocked up. I’m curious if we will really get to play with gradients, top navigation bar color and background images in the way that these are imagined. #Doubtit.

You can bet I’ve pinged Frank to see if he’s willing to create another helpful resource for Facebook brand pages when it’s time. Stay tuned.

I got excited about the timeline rollout and pulled together a KCRW Logo at the right dimensions for the cover image. We’ll see if anyone bites, but you can check it out on my Facebook page here. Click this image if you love KCRW and want to use our logo for your cover image… or just click it to open up an image at the correct dimensions. 800×300 will do the trick.

What do you think of the new Facebook Timeline feature for your personal use?

Are you totally stoked to fill in a history of photos, stretching back to birth?

Can you imagine how cool it will be for KCRW to catalog their history on their timeline, there are so many cool photos from back in the day. Just today I uploaded one of Tom Schnabel and Fela Kuti from 1986 into his World Music Blog, Rhythm Planet.

Click it to see where from. Okay, fine, it was Zurmat.com (duh, they boldly watermarked).

I’m not sure if these social media experts are trying to sell me on Google+, or if they are seeing a future that I just haven’t seen yet. I WANT TO SEE IT. But, as of right now – the G+ platform is a lackluster experience for me personally. Before I felt I was being told to use Google+ INSTEAD of Facebook to upload my private family moments, b/c I can control who can see what with CIRCLES.

I recently read this suggested article, and one part stuck out. Its why I’m here to share my thoughts:

Its architecture, which encourages people to speak with strangers, leave lengthy replies, and customize the information they see, allows Google+ to occupy its own niche, users say. Their descriptions suggest the potential for a social media trifecta: Facebook as social network, Twitter as information network and Google+ as interest network. - HuffPo

I can agree that it’s nice to point out that the 3 can co-exist for different purposes without having to compete with one another.

But, its interesting to note that Google+ seems to have strayed from the organize your personal life info and tuck it into private Circles….. Now, I see this “interest” direction. Perhaps they mean – the interests that are of a private matter. How many of us are closet Comic-Con frrrrreaks, and totally unwilling to come out with it? Are you dying to commune with like minded nerds?

Do you want to do that by logging on to Google+ and releasing all your inner-demons while sharing your OkCupid experience with “DeviantArtChick420?”

Doesn’t Google+ know that reddit and FourChan are already teeming with a really bonded community of folks swarming around topics that they can’t share with – well ANYONE who they have to look in the eye? Anonymity isn’t a model to scoff at.

But, the trinity! Yes, I’m beginning to like the idea of it. If it works for Google+, I’m into it. I like the philosophy. I just don’t think they are gonna pull this off. Meanwhile, let’s take a look at the three together. Tell me what you think:

The Info – AKA TWITTER

Twitter is happy hour. It’s a cocktail party. It’s a cross between rubbing elbows with like minded industry professionals, and schmoozing with co-workers over topics of interest that you didn’t previously know you shared. Not so much deep discussion…. small talk. On Twitter, everyone is different…. It’s a public place for strangers to look in on each other and share new ideas and content.

The Holy Social – AKA Facebook

Here you can curate your friends and share your ENTIRE life in a more meaningful way. Remember that Don Draper Facebook Timeline video that came out around the initial announcement of the new FB layout… I wanna embed it for you, but they won’t let me.

The Interest – AKA Google+

I’m not sure what this is the analogy yet. Help me out. I’m thinking they want us to lean toward nerd convention. Like Comic-Con???

Are you adopting Google+?

Are you using it to really explore your interests?

Do you think that Twitter TOTALLY one upped this logic with their awesome new #Discover navigation tab?

Are you REALLLLLLY using Google+?

Is this who you’re hanging out with on Google+?

Stumbled upon another nice infographic today! It’s hugely long, so I’ve included below. The topic - Musicians on Facebook in 2011. See the patterns that emerged from top tier users in 2011. Keep in mind that these are established musicians that work with tons of marketing support.

If you are getting your start as a new musician, I recommend a humble and more homegrown approach. Start with your wall feed as an initial landing page and engage personally with the fans that seek you out through the traditional facebook approach. This feels more genuine than immediately asking for an email address, or sending them to a poorly thought out landing page. An even better idea, get a super-fan/roadie to hang out and charge them with the task to document and share the highlights of your tour from their perspective.

Check this awesome article from the KCRW Music Blog: How To Work for Your Favorite Band!

Make sure you feed your fans with awesome content like free downloads, fun collaborations with other artists that you meet on tour, or off the cuff acoustic performances recorded with your iPhone. Here’s an example… The Avett Brothers toured for a bit with Jessica Lea Mayfield… (These are my top 2 most listened to artists of the past several years.) You can imagine my geekness when this video – which was simply tossed together and shot in a hallway was released.

Before we go….. DEFINITELY share your tour schedule on FB events, and take the time to reach out to the fans that you have in the areas that you are hitting up. Geography is key, and FB makes it possible to zero in on specific markets. There are filtering tools where you can post only to particular regions. Do it! Make sure they know that you are coming! I haven’t done a whole ton of research on the advantage of touring apps like BandsInTown or Songkick, so I can’t say if they are time worthy or not for smaller acts. Though, I was intrigued, if not surprised, to see that BandsInTown ranked there in the stats for most used apps.

What are some standout musicians on Facebook that you really enjoy?

Popular or not – who gets you engaged?

Are you a musician? What are you doing that’s working?

Where do you need guidance?

As mentioned briefly last week, Twitter has released new Brand Pages. Here’s some scoop from the Twitter Blog.

I got a message from my friend Frank today, asking if I had seen any of the live examples yet. I don’t know how they decide which accounts get the update, but my BetsyKCRW account did. So, I let him have at my login info so he could take a look for himself. As a result, he asked if I knew anyone that could benefit from a “Twitter Design Guidelines” info-graphic. I suggested he upload it to Visual.ly, the cool info-graphic community where I was able to create My Twitter Profile in Visual Data. I think that community is really cool, and I’m excited to keep my eye on it.

Frank is helping out some friends over at Placements Media, so they got a nice shout in the Visual.ly infographic below. Click the graphic to see it in its full glory on the Visual.ly site.

Did you get the new twitter layout yet? Do you feel totally privileged or what?

Do you manage a “brand” on twitter?

Do you wonder how Twitter will define BRAND?

What’s the difference between a person on twitter, and a brand on twitter?

Are people… brands?

It’s happening. Twitter has been redesigned… and I had no idea.

We did get an Twitter Insider’s tip from way back that mentioned that hashtags were going to be rebranded by Twitter, but I shrugged it off. How could Twitter rebrand the hashtag and make it any more important than it already is….? I get it now – they built their navigation around it and labeled it “DISCOVER.”

They stole my heart with the #Space theme of this video…..

We’ll see how folks adopt. My initial reaction is positive and immediately I’m intrigued by the new views of conversations as well as the built-in “embed” option. Though, it’s a little lackluster once actually embedded: **EDIT – magically – it appears in a much better format three days after initial publish of this post – clearly an improvement made since its initial release.

@BetsyKCRW rad! appreciate it!

— Giraffage (@giraffage) December8, 2011

I wonder – perhaps the redesign might lend itself to a more intuitive use of twitter for those that are still coming up to me and saying “I just don’t GET Twitter! What is it all about? What is this HASHTAG thing?”

Will the redesign enable the twitter-illiterate to become power users, like the twitter-elite?

In addition to the redesign, Twitter has also announced brand pages. They have launch partners that you can check out: American Express & Coca-Cola‘s pages. GOD, I love Coca-Cola, and its social presence!

Anyway, Brand pages will obviously affect strategy for the KCRW accounts as well as advising the staff here for other program accounts. I’ve sent an email to our twitter contact – who we JUST had a conference call with THIS WEEK to talk strategy specifically around music. She failed to mention this big announcement. Interesting…
