I'm a believer. To me there's nothing like starting off the day with a great Lavazza double espresso. But as a bald guy who has been drinking espresso for 45 years, maybe I would be better off rubbing it into my head.

English Jams Are Back!

It's been a while, but we are once again importing some great products from Cottage Delight in England.

The first two items to hit our shores are Black Currant Extra Jam and Raspberry Extra Jam. They are both award-winning, traditional hand made English jams. Produced in small batches, the jams are hand stirred in open copper pans, by expert English jam makers to produce that sweet, sharp taste that is uniquely English.

New Shipping Charges

The recent increase in fuel costs has resulted in higher freight rates from all major carriers.

To help mitigate these increases and provide you with more delivery options we have implemented several changes to the way shipping charges are calculated on our retail web site:

1. You can now choose between UPS and the USPS for delivery of your order; if you're in the Santa Cruz area you can also pick up your order at our warehouse;

2. With either carrier you can choose from a menu of delivery options, from standard ground service to next day, 2nd day or 3 day air with UPS and parcel post, priority or express mail with the USPS;

3. The web site now incorporates "Live Rates" from UPS and the USPS so that instead of estimated charges, the exact cost to your zip code will be calculated. Please note that USPS Live Rates do not currently offer a Flat Rate Priority Mail option. However, if you choose Priority Mail and we can fit your order in a Flat Rate Priority Mail box we will adjust the shipping charges and refund any savings to you.

4. On all retail orders of $100 or more you will receive free ground shipping (via UPS ground of USPS parcel post) in the contiguous 48 states.

5. For the time being the new shipping options are available only on our retail web site, www.iveta.com. We are working on the wholesale web site and similar options should be available soon.

As an incentive for you to try out the new shipping options (and please let us know if you encounter any problems) we are offering $10 off of any retail order of $50 or more through Monday, April 30, 2012. Marine Corps Birthday

Please join me in wishing the United States Marine Corps a happy 236th birthday.

It's hard to believe that it's been 45 years since that warm night in June, 1966 when I arrived at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego and was greeted by a group of drill instructions who, as I recall, didn't seem too happy to see me.

While Marine recruit training is an adventure I would not want to repeat, it was an experience I will never forget. I will always be proud to have earned the title of "Marine" and will be forever indebted to all past, present and future Marines who give true meaning to the words "honor", "courage" and "commitment".

Happy Birthday Marines! Semper Fi.

Tip Jars Are Dangerous!

A story recently appeared in the St Louis Riverfront Times which convinces me that our legal system is completely out of control.

Apparently a teenage boy made off with the tip jar from a local Starbucks. A 54 year old male customer in the store saw him take the tip jar and chased after him. A scuffle followed and the 54 year old man fell, hit his head on the pavement and died two days later.

The boy was caught, convicted and sentenced to a year in jail.

The father of the deceased man sued the boy for wrongful death and later settled out of court. I guess the kid didn't have enough money so the father sued Starbucks, arguing that they knew or should have known that tip jars are an invitation to theft and that Starbucks should have warned its customers of the potential danger of tip jars.

The plaintiff should be ashamed of himself for filing such an obviously frivolous suit against Starbucks and for trying to profit from the death of his son. The lawyer who filed the case against Starbucks should be dis-barred.

Enough is enough already!

The Earthquake and Tsunami

The earthquake and tsunami were grim reminders of the devastating force of nature – in Japan and even here in Santa Cruz. Although we’re all struggling to get through these difficult economic times, watching the heartbreaking events unfold in Japan made everything else seem almost insignificant by comparison.

The lunatic in Libya murders his citizens in a desperate attempt to continue his 40 year reign of terror . . . millions of people follow every tweet of the Kardashian sisters for reasons that defy explanation . . . legislators in Wisconsin and Indiana flee their states to avoid voting on controversial issues . . . politicians continue to make promises they can’t fulfill, spend money like there was no tomorrow and avoid dealing with the tough problems they were elected to solve . . . Charlie Sheen becomes a media darling for beating up women, trashing hotel rooms and embracing a lifestyle of booze, drugs and hookers . . . rumor mongering and pure greed keep pushing up the price of oil and other commodities . . . NFL owners and players can’t agree on how to share BILLIONS in revenues while the taxpayers who pay for their sports palaces can’t afford to buy a ticket . . . and the self-proclaimed experts on TV keep telling us how collective bargaining has made our education system better . . . how tax breaks and bailouts for the Wall Street crowd have saved the economy . . . and how the war in Afghanistan is making us safer at home.
