Graziers managing land along the coastal Burnett, Baffle, Kolan, Isis, Gregory and Elliot River systems are getting set to get involved in the Australian Government’s 3rd round of funding for the Reef Rescue program.

The program, delivered across the east coast of Queensland, has involved the horticulture, sugar, dairy and grains industries as well as the grazing industry to put together projects that will reduce the sediment and nutrient run-off into the Great Barrier Reef lagoon.

At the southern reach of the Reef lagoon, BCCA staff are responsible for helping landholders who are in the priority area (see map below) of the Burnett and Baffle catchments.

BCCA are now seeking Expressions of Interest from graziers wishing to undertake a project on their property that will help reduce runoff. Project examples include fencing cattle out of a creek and placing alternative water elsewhere in the paddock; erosion control using contours; fencing or watering points to distribute grazing pressure. New participants will find their Expression of Interest form here, and previous participants in Reef Rescue will find their form here. Both are due in to BCCA by Friday September 10th, 2010.

Appliations will be put together with a BCCA extension officer by Friday October 1st and projects can be expected to be started by the end of October 2010 and finished by May 2011.

Get in contact if you have any questions.
