This is a classic example of why nothing substantial gets achieved in the US Congress.   A Democratic resolution calling for Michael Jackson to be honoured for his career is being opposed by Republicans.   One Republican says that Jackson is a “pervert, child molester, pedophile”.

Haven’t Congress got better things to be arguing about than this?   My God, it’s only a resolution to a dead man.  It’s not as if we’re handing him the keys to the White House.

Google has officially announced the worst kept secret of the internet - that they are starting to develop an operating system.  Who didn’t see that one coming?  Not many I imagine.

It became plain to everyone, when Chrome came out, that an operating system was Google’s ultimate goal.   But Google went to strenuous efforts to deny that this was what they wanted to do long term.   But it seemed to me at least that the more Google denied it, the more unbelievable it sounded.   Of course Google would develop an operating system.   It’s a natural successor to the browser.   To stop at a browser would have been the equivalent of building the foundations of a house but then not building the actual house itself.

It seems that this will be going open source - the exact opposite of Windows - and it will be initially targeted at netbooks.

How worried should Microsoft be right now?   Probably very worried.   Once again, Google is targeting and eating away at one of Microsoft’s core products.   First Google Docs targets Office, then Chrome ambushes Windows Explorer.   Now the operating system will be trying to stick the knife into Windows itself.

I sometimes feel rather sorry for Microsoft.   The once-assailable king is now being attacked on all sides by enemies such as Mozilla and Google.   They just can’t seem to catch a break.

All I can say is that Windows 7 better be good - for their own sake.   If Windows 7 follows the way of Vista, would Microsoft be able to recover from two disasters in a row?

It’s amazing how a bad day can turn so good all of a sudden.   I was recovering this afternoon from a particularly nasty epileptic attack and my day obviously went belly up all of a sudden.   As you can imagine, I was feeling pretty bad tempered and sick as I got up and went back to the computer several hours later.  8pm and hardly any work done that day as a result.

But then I checked my Twitter direct messages to find out that actor and author Ben Crystal liked my review of his latest book so much that he wanted to send me an autographed copy to say thank you.  He even put the review on his website and linked back to my original Librarything review.

Sometimes a bad day can change back to a good day in the blink of an eye - and all it took was the kindness and generosity of one person.

“Shakespeare On Toast” is a fantastic book and well worth reading if you are into Shakespeare and / or English literature.  Do you know of anyone that complains that Shakespeare is dull, boring and difficult to understand?  Give them a copy of “Toast” and they won’t complain again - I mean it.

Normally the US State Department issues travel advisories to American travellers for dangerous hotspots around the globe. So think of places such as Colombia, Iran, Iraq, North Korea. But the quiet peaceful German town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen? Surely a joke?

The travel advisory issued July 2nd, which the US Consulate in Munich says will soon be lifted, warned any Americans travelling to Garmisch-Partenkirchen to “be on the alert” and to “avoid public gathering places, particularly restaurants, bars and discos frequented by American citizens” in Garmisch.

The warning, which has seemingly outraged the German government, was issued after a brawl at a Garmisch nightclub in which several people were injured and an American soldier who took part in the attack was threatened with revenge attacks. More threats were received later.

This warning is a little insulting to Germany because a) it lumps them in with real dangerous countries around the world and b) it implies that the German police are not capable of maintaining law and order in Garmisch. One brawl in one nightclub and suddenly the US Government is warning Americans to avoid all restaurants, bars and discos?

Look at it this way - how would the US Government feel if there was a fight outside a New York nightclub and suddenly other countries advised their citizens to steer clear of New York? There would be an uproar and Wolf Blitzer would be in his Situation Room with guests criticising those crazy Europeans.

What do you think? Was the travel warning appropriate or a little bit of a diplomatic over-reaction?
