Turning reggae songs into two-fisted rockers is a Good Thing.

Big Daddy "Graceland" (Paul Simon)
I first heard of Big Daddy when they covered "Eye of the Tiger" as a doo-wop tune. Uncle Flakey turned me on to this one and I think the song works much better with the faux Elvis arrangement

The Lost Prophets "Cry Me A River" (Justin Timberlake)
Being an old fart, Justin Timberlake was pretty much off my radar until "Dick In A Box" became unavoidable. You'll need to stick with this one for a minute or two. It starts out sounding much like the original, but then the guitars come roaring in.

Ben Folds Five "She Don't Use Jelly" (Flaming Lips)
I just can't resist a good cha-cha. It's a deep-seated character flaw.

I still miss Country Dick Montana. The man was fierce, fearless, and stinking drunk. I want to be like him when I grow up.

Neko Case "Wayfaring Stranger"
Update: Alert Reader John informs me that this recording is taken from Irene Trudel's WMFU show.

I don't like Neko Case. Not personally, of course. I'm sure she's a very nice person. But her music does absolutely nothing for me. People tell me I'm supposed to like her. I've tried to like her. I want to like her. I've bought her music and paid to hear her perform live. But her music leaves me completely cold.

This is the only thing she's ever done that I've enjoyed. I think it's because of Jon Rauhouse's banjo playing. The arrangement is very spare and lovely. It sounds like it was recorded for a radio show, but I have no information on where it came from.

Merry X-mas. They say you need a sense of humor to overcome adversity, so in the last year our sense of humor has been stretched. We're both happy to move on, and while it's difficult to move from your own 3-bedroom home in Nashville to a garage in Santa Monica, it's been the right thing to do.

For example, we had Thanksgiving with a producer. And while we were enjoying a very fine California cigar, we listened to the tracks we cut in Nashville with Mike Webb and Fugitive Glue with Dave Roe on bass. (Please don't tell FuGlu we love them or miss them). Anyway, the end result is that we made a deal. Since it's all digital and online, we can't call it a record deal, but it will integrate our short films, writing, vlogs, etc. in addition to music. Maybe this will work? The old way was killing us. We love playing live and if it makes any kind of $$$ sense, we'd do it in a second, but we can't play live and lose money, so we'll do everything online with the help of VidLit.com (TM).

We're going to open up our affairs to the world in the same way reality TV does, except this is actually real, not just pretty people cast for an ad campaign about Shampoo that makes women instantly orgasm in the shower.

The Nashville duo Betty Dylan may just be on to something, a way to save alternative country from itself by politicizing it in a way hinted at by Steve Earle and a few others: Hippies and Rednecks Unite! The husband and wife team of Dan and Vickie Dubelman, New Jersey natives who live in Nashville and tour sporadically, play Uncle P's Friday behind their startling new disc, Abdicate the Throne. The pair kick the recording off with "The Star Spangled Banner" and proceed to bracket the title track (a blunt and blatant call for impeachment of the boss) and nine other originals with a snarling closing cover of that other Dylan's "Masters of War." No less a personage than the eminent veteran New York DJ Vin Scelsa heralded the band on a recent "Air America" broadcast.

The group is a dark and shambling throwback to the Crazy Horse of the early '70s (among other groups), and as an added plus they feature Lexington-based drummer Tim Welch, one of the best groove-oriented rock drummers in the Midwest. They proudly note that they've been banned from ever again playing at Nashville's storied and oh-so-correct singer-songwriter hellhole, the Bluebird. That is its own high praise. -Paul Kopasz

Vin: Yeah. Originally from New Jersey...they're down in Nashville now.

Randi: There's so much music going on out there and it just does not get played. And, you know, it's funny, 'cuz they're all saying this.

Vin: uh huhm. It's gets played on, you know, stations like this but not a lot. And, uh, it's not really out there in the mass media.

Randi: Yeah.

Vin: You know, the big corporate radio stations aren't playing this stuff.

Randi: Well that will change, though, that will change because those big corporate radio stations have a lot of business in front of congress that they don't want to start. But as soon as they have to apologize to the people for going along with this heinous plan, they will also sweat. The innovation will come from the innovators and no other place. It's not going to come from the corporations. People are going to keep writing this music and they're going to keep pushing and pushing to get...just like I did, just like everybody has to and then they'll finally push through their own...and this music will be the next...you'll see...this is going to be the next music that people hear. The boy bands and the Britney's and the pop culture. It's all going to get deadly serious when the President is being impeached for war crimes. When the President's being impeached for oral sex, it's funny!

Vin: Yeah.

Randi: It's pathetic that they would do something like that with their power, the Republicans, but it's funny, there's so much hu(mor)...it's so bizarre. But war crimes...?

Vin: War crimes...?

Randi: I mean, come on, that's not funny anymore.

Vin: That's different.

Randi: That's a big thing.

Vin: Randi Rhodes.

If that's true for you, you deserve it because you got me through a very difficult childhood, very difficult, loud and very, you know, rough house and you know, not much money and, you know, they were basically good people but they were at each other's throats and it's difficult when you're little and I tell you, if it wasn't for you, and NEW and before that even PLJ, I don't know what would have happened.

Vin: isn't that good..and you're not alone in that...radio did that for a lot of people.

Randi: Yeah, but you were my DJ and so, this is amazing.

To those who of you have let us crash in your warm beds, fed us family meals and bought extra CDs even though you didn't really need them, thanks for supporting us fools trying to make music without corporate sponsorship (unless you know a corporate sponsor who will give us $$$) :}}

To those of you who have kicked us off the stage, banned us from your clubs, and even the booking guy from Brooklyn who said we "weren't country enough for the Rodeo Bar" (whatever that means)...we forgive you...

We're back out on the road, so we really appreciate extra love our friends have shown us, and we want to give it back twofold. We'd love to play some house concerts. And if you like grassroots stuff, we're starting a Betty Dylan street team, at least until someone suggests a better name... East Nashville Tomato Festival 2005

Tomatoes have a right to life, too! The inspiration for this short film was the controversy on the local list.serve. There were those who wanted to have fun tossing tomatoes and taking their anger out on the abandoned building where local prostitutes and drug dealers did their business. The building would be humiliated first by the crowd's tomato mayhem, then sumarily demolished. Then, there are those peaceful types who'd rather can the tomatoes for the hungry, and who prefer not to mock those less fortunate than they no matter how wayward they've gone. Featuring Vickie and Dan of the band, Betty Dylan, with their song "The Alchemist" (unreleased), and an angry East Nashville mob.

I'm very excited to have my new G5. She's beautiful. The guys at MacAuthority in Nashville were awesome. So, we'll be having more killer videos and stuff for you soon! My carpel tunnel is already acting up.

We went to the East Nashville Tomato Tossing and building demolition today. Lots of kids having way too much fun wasting food. We'll have video from that soon as well as music from some live shows, too. Email us and tell us what you want to hear!
