Here's a recent ad that I worked on for es Shoes. It's a spinoff from the feature film "Machotaildrop", which is still making it's way around the world in festivals and private screenings. A distribution deal is in the works from what I hear. The ad is for Manwolf shoes, a reference to the feral skateboarding gang in "Machotaildrop". Mine are in the mail--can't wait.

It seems to take a wedding for me to get to making mixes these days. This one comes from my friends' wedding in Washington D.C. last week. They asked me to put together a playlist for the rehearsal dinner, which took place on the rooftop patio of the Newseum - overlooking the Canadian embassy and the Capitol building. This mix is a distillation of that list and the vibe of the congregation of many good friends and family. It features some Paris Jazz, American songbook, Spanish and Brazilian music, with a healthy dose of Canadian music. It's mostly instrumental, and very, very chill. Make sure you are dressed in your smart casuals for this one.

Belgian artist Eric Duyckaerts is so badass that he goes head to head with one of history's baddest philosophers and comes out cleaner than a broke-dick dog.

Eric Duyckaert's video work consists, essentially, of farcical conferences whose tortuous thread oscillates between the fields of science and the absurd. With their random association of ideas in anecdotal digressions, the scholars he embodies before the lens lose the viewer in an orgy of learned references and sweep us up, with the aid of their paperboards, in shows of their oblique logic. The passionate boggins mumble, sway and quiver with glee as they approach their conclusions on "the 2-thumbed hand", except, that is, when they lose their reason and insult the philosopher, Kant, referring to him as a "liar" and "dirty animal" (&much worse ) All this troubling comic behaviour interferes with the speech on art and draws our attention to the form rather than the substance.

NEW MIX: Destination Earth Mix

This one took some work. It started out as a mix for listening to while riding the subway in New York. A mix of old school electro, hip-hop, electronic, instrumental, and soundtrack music with a focus on longer durations, and flashes of light. But then I moved to Vancouver, and left the world of tunnels for the world of highways. That's when I started to rethink the mix.

When you are on the subway you listen to music to escape into your own world. When you are in a car you listen to music to escape into the world around you. (see: Simplification) It's a perfect storm situation of a two-sides-of-the-same-coin type thing, and I think this mix reflects that.

Anyway, if you wanted to know why there hasn't been a mix for so long I have given you an explanation. If you want to know the best setting in which to listen to this mix, I would suggest listening to it either in a car or else on the subway -- day and/or night. There's probably other situations that would work equally as well. Let me know the different places where you listened to this mix today in the comments section below.

2. I made the decision to join Amazon as an associate so that I could post links to particular songs in the mix songlists. It will help you, as a listener, find out the name of the song that you like by making it possible to listen to clips on Amazon. Also, should you decide to pay the $0.89-$0.99 to download the track, I will get a small commission of the sale (ie. full disclosure). Some mixes have already been retrofitted with these links, I should have them all done by the end of the month.

3. This site is not really a music/buzz band site where I'm promoting bands or posting links to my favorite tracks of the moment. It's mostly a place where I post mixes, projects that I have made or am involved in, or else special events of note. At the moment I am putting together a site that will be a place where I post music & videos that will have a unique functionality. I don't want to say too much about it right now, but I will let you know more when I am about to release it from the nest.

As a musician and a blogger, I have been waiting for a site like this. It's a place holder for music tracks that allows people to stream, share and download albums. It's sounds like we have that already, but there are a few differences.
1. You upload uncompressed Wav/Aiffs and they create all the different formats (mp3, flac, apple lossless, etc). Also, they make sure that the files are tagged properly and have cover art when you download them.
2. Customizable page design with no ads on your page.
3. You chooses if you want to give away tracks, sell them or allow the fan to decide how much to pay.
4. You can get analytics about who is downloading their music, what sites/blogs are sharing them, what tracks are popular.

Various Artists - Ionosphere

While looking for ionosphere recordings last night (for sound design purposes), I found this album that I thought I would share it with you. This is a stereo recording made in 1955 at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington DC and at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. It is made available on the Smithsonian Folkways website, found here LINK. You can listen to short samples and, while the CD or Cassette (!?) costs $17, the mp3/FLAC download is only $3 ($9 at Amazon). Might be something to consider if you are into electronic music, sound design, ambiant music etc.

Alvin Lucier made similar Ionospheric recordings in 1980 or 1981 that were released on an album titled "Sferics". The album is out of print as of this posting, but you can listen to the recording at aair.fm: LINK. One of the things to point out is that the continuous rhythmic tones that you hear throughout this recording are not from the ionosphere but are part of the system for keeping track of air traffic. Please comment if you know what that is called, because I cannot recall at the moment.

Glory At Sea (2008)

Here's a film I worked on last year. Check it out if you haven't already. A short set in New Orleans that crosses the Orpheus myth with the story of a group of hurricane survivors. Produced by Court 13 and directed by Benh Zeitlin.

Review from the New York Times:

Standing apart from the other Katrina movies, Benh Zeitlin’s “Glory at Sea,” a 25-minute film that screened at South by Southwest, displaces the tragedy to the realm of myth even as it evokes the celebratory rituals of New Orleans as it used to be. In this exuberant fantasy, a ragtag band of storm survivors build a boat from materials found on the streets — car parts, a bed, a bathtub — and set sail in the hopes of reuniting with their loved ones at the bottom of the ocean.
Mr. Zeitlin said the giddy communal spirit of the story carried over into the production. “A community really did form around the excitement and madness of building a boat out of Katrina trash and sailing it out into Lake Pontchartrain,” he said.
“Glory at Sea” derives a special poignancy from its site-specific particulars, but in its folkloric expansiveness, the film also transcends the realities of Katrina. “It’s about how we can respond to tragedy with love, and hope, and total insanity,” Mr. Zeitlin said. “And that emotion, I hope, translates universally.”

Interesting fact: the score was used in Obama's political ads during the 2008 elections.
