Is this the END of Between the Staples?

So you might have been wondering, where the Fnck are any posts on Between the Staples. No. Wait. No one wondered that.

Yes, Between the Staples has been on a hiatus of late. Yes, there has been the 2nd half of The Walking Dead and no more reviews on this site. Yes. We went to Fan Expo Vancouver and I didn’t blog about it. Yes, THOR: RAGNAROK & GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2 came out and we didn’t do a review about. Lastly, YES, BLACK PANTHER came out (WONDERFUL & Maybe ONE OF THE BEST MARVEL MOVIES MADE) and again, no review. STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI came out and we didn’t defend how great of a movie it was. BENDIS quit MARVEL and went to DC COMICS to write SUPERMAN and still nothing on the Between the Staples website. The bloody AVENGERS INFINITY WAR trailer came out to tumbleweeds here. The new DEADPOOL 2 trailer came out today and still, NADA.

WHY ROBERT? W H Y ?

Because I lost much interest in working so hard on the reviews, the posts, Talking Comics every week became a CHORE and NOT FUN. Plus I was and am finding little to no one was reading the site but not only that – I didn’t CARE anymore. I’ve begun reading Less and LESS Comic Books than I used to. My main point about Between the Staples was that I wrote on this site for ME to rant and rave. To scream at the Internet winds from the top of this tiny, fraction of a website but my throat got dry, ran hoarse so eventually I stepped down and stopped screaming aka posting. Sure I wanted this to be more encompassing with more bloggers but that didn’t work out. I used to be encouraged to do the live podcasts but even that seemed like more & more work than I had the energy to do after working online all day. Yes, say I got lazy. Sure but that’s where I’m at right now.

I’m BURNT OUT on most things GEEK.

Sure, I’ll go see a movie, sure I watch The Walking Dead, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Arrow, The Magicians, Mr. Robot, Krypton, Black Lightening, <del datetime="2018-03-22T19:44:15+00:00">Gotham</del> (No. Fnck that – I hate Gotham), <del datetime="2018-03-22T19:44:15+00:00">Agents of SHIELD</del> (nope, dropped that show as well) but overall, I’m more or less just keeping to myself on my Twitter account vs coming on this site and ranting / raving. I can’t even get myself going to do a podcast and respect those that do. Perhaps I’m fighting some major depression, I’m not certain but what I do know is that Between the Staples doesn’t have to all be done by me.

SO What’s Next?

So that said, I’ve made Hartley Holmberg from The Hartley Show as an author on the site. Hartley has started some WONDERFUL new YouTube Videos about comic book reviews and teasers for eack weeks of comics. I’ll include a few here below, who knows, maybe this will spark more of an imagination and interest for me to return to doing something more regular on the site.

So BtS ain’t dead, least not Yet.

Check out our review of the season finale episode “Mercy” of The Walking Dead on AMC. The Walking Dead: S801 Our Review.

The Walking Dead – Season 8 episodes 1 Season Premiere “Mercy”

Warning: There will be spoilers.

The Walking Dead: S801 Our Review

Some quick recapping then we’re just diving right into it…

Well here we are, 100 episodes of The Walking Dead. Now I’m not gonna sugar coat this season opener like they do on Talking Dead. It’s not horrible but overall the single viewing of the episode has some pacing issues. Lots of misleading scenes, more misdirection, more teases and FINALLY it bring BACK The Walking Dead into this War between Rick & Negan. Between Alexandria, The Kingdom & Hilltop vs the Saviors of Sanctuary.

Now let’s get to it. If you need a recap, here 3 seasons of The Walking Dead reviews that we’ve done here:
http://www.betweenthestaples.com/?s=The+Walking+Dead

Spoilers…

Robert: Okay. Lots of playing with this episode. We get teased various scenes yet to be played out (if they ever will) and other more tragic scenes we likely won’t want to have played out. We go from leading up to Old Man Rick waking up to his family & a growing new life in a peaceful Alexandria, we also get scenes of Rick in the brink of major injuries, torture and perhaps death / turning to a Walker with perhaps the Old Man Rick scenes are all a big dream. Also Rick mourns 2 dead, more tease of what’s to come (Carol & Morgan?).

Robert: During the opening, we also get to see others in play and setup. Hilltop is helping. Alexandria is gearing up. Those of the Kingdom working with everyone. More discussions, more rallying of troops and lastly a small crew of Morgan, Carol, Daryl and Tara adventuring.

Robert: Mixed with such adventures, we follow Carl, now driving and scavenging for gas and food until he comes across someone who’s alive yet starving. Of course, before Carl can say “hands in the air”, daddy Rick comes shooting into the air to scare off this survivor. Carl & Rick argue about hope. Carl obviously wants to help others, wants to believe in hope while Rick is now on the alert, no trusting anyone. “He could be one of THEM!” Rick says with such passion that either this is before or just AFTER whatever happens in the episode. Guessing this has to do with fallout, perhaps some of those of Sanctuary are now out and trying to survive on their own. Perhaps it’s from the Heapsters (although those ones are kinda messed up, this survivor was VERY talkative. Kinda Jesus style upon first meeting Rick & Daryl).

Robert: Next to come back to more of the buildup of both the big move on Negan & Sanctuary plus more of Rick on the verge of death and visions of a perfect new world as Old Man Rick.

Robert: I’m gonna stop right here and say that ALL the Old Man Rick scenes from here until the end of the episode – my guess, is all bullshit and a vision while Rick is on the verge of death.

Robert: Here’s where parts of this episode seem broken in it’s pacing, the Rick scenes, the build up w the showdown with Negan, the Carol, Morgan, Daryl & Tara crew scenes have more weight because their interacting with more of the world around them. The Daryl Crew are leading a herd of walkers. Obviously leading the herd of walkers to Sanctuary. Certain Savior lookouts are eliminated that leads Rick to rally everyone one on finally attack on Negan. For a better tomorrow.

Robert: So while the plan goes into action, bombs go off, Negan sends some of his forces out to check, Daryl’s Crew makes them go boom while also leading the walker herd to Sanctuary. Next up, Rick drives on into Sanctuary and has a face off with Negan and those inside Sanctuary. Rick offers them a peaceful way to end things, those inside can leave and no harm done. Of course things don’t go well. Gregory shows his face and tries to use what power he no longer has on those from Hilltop, to get those from Hilltop to stand down. That goes for shit. Simon throws Gregory down just before Rick starts to count then decides, Fuck it and starts shooting. Now this is where it gets a bit confusing for a bit, for some viewers. Rick & his army shootout the windows of Sanctuary. Why? I believe it’s for a few reasons but mainly – noise. See Daryl’s Crew take out the Saviors who left and help lead the walker herd to Sanctuary. The gunfire on the windows makes a TON of noise. Also it’s a great distraction, hard to keep shooting at Ricks army when glass is falling on you and lastly, they’re making Sanctuary less hospitable. Imagine if a storm came and Sanctuary has no windows?

Robert: All in all it worked. Add in some explosions care of the classic RV and both Sanctuary & Negan were on the verge of some major collapse. Rick has to get torn away from gunning down Negan by Father Gabriel who reminds Rick that – all of this isn’t about Rick. It’s not about any one person although one person started all of this – Negan.

Robert: Now what really bothered me and I didn’t mind. Father Gabriel has been on a quest for redemption for many seasons now and he sacrificed himself again for cowardly Gregory who takes off on Gabriel and drive away. Leaving Father Gabriel to find his only Sanctuary, sadly and unfortunately right into the arms of a very pissed off Negan while the herd of walkers have take Sanctuary.

Robert: Before the end of the episode, we get some stories started wrapped up. We see Carl went back to the gas station where he briefly encountered the hungry survivor and leaves him some food. Carl with the hope. Also we get to see the big rally, the words from Rick before they go to Sanctuary. The talk of a better tomorrow and how it’s their world to take.

Robert: One scene that didn’t make any scene was Carol, King Ezekiel & those of the Kingdom taking out another outpost where they had quietly killed one of the Saviors. I didn’t understand that scenes relevance and why other Saviors would want to blow that door as obviously their own walker trap if they got attacked. Seemed very out of place.

Robert: Overall, not a terrible episode but the constant teases of Old Man Rick, dying Rick, Rally Rick seemed to distract from the concrete moments of Daryl’s Crew leading the walkers to the final moments of the grand showdown in Sanctuary. Note, I’m Not saying grand showdown with Negan. I’m sure that’s to come and will play directly into the dying Rick scenes.

Robert: Oh and lastly, did ANYONE else get the feeling and vibe that The Walking Dead is building Maggie up to become the future lead of the show? I do. Too many important leadership scenes, moments and dialogue to believe otherwise.

Robert: I think – Dying Rick will happen this season or at the start next (if they prolong his final scene until then) season.

Bits & Pieces

Quote of the week: “I hope you got your shitting pants on.” Another Neganism.

Carol seeing the flowers graffiti was touching.

The scene on the highway and a car on fire & a herd of walkers, I’m sure that’s a call back to various times Rick & crew dealt with that before. Last season was one call back.

Rick taking moments to look off to various outposts. Rick looking off from the prison. From the farm. From the camp.

Daryl & Dwight communicating with each other. It builds on Dwight leaving / turning on Negan after the clue he left for Daryl at the end of last season but does that mean they have trust or will Daryl still kill him?

Is Michonne & Carl the two that are buried side by side. Big tease tonight with those two staying behind to protect Alexandria. Also leads to Rick Grimes story to end and Maggie’s story to continue. Perhaps training a teenage Judith how to survive?

Where are the Heapsters? Will this lead to them becoming The Whispers?

Lots of callbacks to the first episode since it’s been 100 already, here’s a side by side (credit: Cam Jobson)

ROBERT: I’m wondering about Ruff & Ready Show this week and very keen on DC House of Horror but hope it’s more Vertigo and less apart of the DC nu52 universe. Also the Thor comic seems… interesting. Lots of DC books being promoted on this week’s Talking Comics. Are there ANY Marvel books out today? Also big miss on the large hardcover WildStorm 25th Anniversary collection not being mentioned! Doesn’t feel like a very big week of comics.

Marvel Comics – Do We NEED a Super SEXY teen Jean Grey?

Seriously?! Do we? Okay, look – I’ve been offline lately and been busy with my other web work life. Sorry about that but this is a very important point to make and it’s something that Marvel & DC Comics do often and likely without much furious feedback so it slips through the radar of what SHOULD and SHOULDN’T be apart of the comic books we love.

…does Marvel need to sexualize a teenage Jean Grey as The Goblin Queen?

Okay. For the sake of the X-Men story that came out last weeks in the latest issue of X-Men Blue #13 that the villain Mojo has thrown all the X-Men teams into the Mojoverse for this messed up, to the death TV reality show he does and he’s dressed the X-Men into various looks from various eras and mixed up the teams. This weeks issue of X-Men Blue #13 has various teams fighting various related villains but does Marvel need to sexualize a teenage Jean Grey as The Goblin Queen? Where are the single set of values for that editor to stop and say, “You know what? Let’s NOT show a teenage Jean Grey like that. Let’s cover her up a bit more, please.” and WHAT would that have hurt in the comic book if they did that?? WHY does she need to be showing so much of her pelvis above her crotch in those panels?

In the wake of all the Harvey Weinstein scandal that is happening right now, Marvel thinks it’s OKAY to have THIS in it’s X-Men comic book…

Besides the whole Weinstein scandal that’s happening, woman are speaking up about sexual harassment, sexual abuse & violence with the viral campaign with #MeToo. Woman are speaking out about times they have been harassment or abused, when they were groped by men because the men thought it was acceptable. Look, I’m no prude but at the same time I don’t think a teenage Jean Grey needs to have a few panels almost showing her crotch to the world. If you listen to ALL of the #MeToo viral campaign, it’s bloody obvious that us MEN get the WRONG ideas of women ALL the time. There’s NO NEED for that to be echoed in the pages of our comic books. We don’t need to “get” the wrong idea about teenage Jean Grey, we just don’t.

I expect Marvel and their editors to stand up and take a stand against such imagery. You wanna sexualize Rogue or Storm or any other WOMAN in the Marvel Comic universe to help sell your books, okay, I get that but PLEASE take a fucking stand on those that you claim as Teenagers.

Same came up a while ago when Riri Williams was said to have been drawn more sexual than she needed to be a while ago. If it wasn’t acceptable then then why’s it acceptable now?! Also just recently at New York Comic-Con, retailers got into a heated discussion with Marvel Comics about diversity and even though this is kinda on the edge of that, the diversity of Women heroes in Comics is a valid point. A point that Marvel has taken high ground with in their response to many of the attacks of the Women in comics or lack thereof / changes to characters. Marvel stood tall & proud of Ms. Marvel when they brought the character to life, I call on that same Marvel to take the high ground here. No more showing off teenage Jean Grey as a big sex symbol in their X-Men books. Why not have this teenage Jean Grey NOT become a fashion model look for the X-Men?

I understand that the Goblin Queen was half dressed in her costume design back in the day. Half dressed for an adult woman, I have no issue with even if it’s not entirely what I’m looking for in a comic book unless it has some merit. Half dressed for a young female hero of a comic book, I have issue with. I know that there’s TONS of Goblin Queen cosplay and artwork out there showing even less costume, that’s NOT the point.

I expect better from Marvel and their editors. That is the point.

Look, if you’re a fucking dumb ass Geek / Nerd who DOESN’T find anything wrong with a teenage Jean Grey showing off more than she should then and likely “gets off” on this kinda stuff then please FUCK OFF and NEVER RETURN TO THIS WEBSITE. You sicken me.

Marvel Studios’ Black Panther – Official Trailer

Long live the king!

yes Yes YES! Now THIS is the next BIG Marvel Studios’ movie that will kick some SERIOUS freaking ass! The LOOK of Black Panther, the gold, the purple, the REGAL style of his costume / armor plus the vastly different futuristic tech than we’ve seen in other Marvel films already makes this trailer stand out, I can’t even imagine what the movie’s going to be like! As the song goes, King T’Challa’s/Black Panther’s revolution isn’t going to be televised… it’s going live!

This movie quickly follows where events left off in Captain America: Civil War, King T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) returns home to Wakanda in time to find his very sovereignty challenged by warring factions from within his own borders. When Wakandan exile Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) and black market arms dealer Ulysses Klaue / Klaw (Andy Serkis) conspire to bring down his reign, T’Challa must become the Black Panther; and with the aid of C.I.A. agent Everett K. Ross (Martin Freeman), as well as Okoye (Danai Gurira) and members of Wakandan special forces unit Dora Milaje to prevent a world war.

Additionally, Florence Kasumba and John Kani reprise their roles as Ayo and T’Chaka respectively from Captain America: Civil War. Sterling K. Brown plays N’Jobu, a figure from T’Challa’s past, Isaach de Bankolé plays the elder of one of the largest tribes in Wakanda, Nabiyah Be portrays the criminal Tilda Johnson, and Sydelle Noel portrays Xoliswa, a member of the Dora Milaje. Atandwa Kani has been cast in an undisclosed role.

Directed by Ryan Coogler, Black Panther stars stars Boseman, Jordan, Gurira, Freeman, Lupita Nyong’o, Angela Bassett and Forest Whitaker.

Why Do Marvel Movies Look Kind of Ugly? Check this out! It is a wonderful video essay by Patrick H. Willems that opened my eyes to color grading in movies. Although I do feel that Dr. Strange & especially the newest Spider-Man: Homecoming had better color grading then the rest of the Marvel movies (maybe I felt it looked better in theatre at the time), I have to agree that the Marvel color grading default needs work. Hopefully with the camera change in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, like Patrick H. Willems mentions, helps adjust that to be a brighter tone that more matches the Marvel comics. Marvel was always known as comic books that pop although lately their comic book covers seem to lack that so maybe in a way, latest comics match the muddy colors of their films?

Please do take the time to check out Patrick H. Willems work. He’s made some wonderful film shorts and video essays that will make you think and enjoy movies even more so with the insight.

Well, here it is, the bloody, gory and brutal trailer for the new & upcoming Marvel’s The Punisher Netflix show coming by years end (maybe sooner than we think). Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle is back for his vengeance and more as The Punisher, straight out of the Daredevil season 2 Netflix show! The upcoming Marvel Netflix show will also star Ben Barnes, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Amber Rose Revah, Deborah Ann Woll, Daniel Webber, Jason R. Moore, Paul Schulze, Jaime Ray Newman, and Michael Nathanson.

The Punisher is scheduled to be released in 2017.

Robert: Wow. I believe that Netflix is trying HARD to give this Marvel show it’s own very different look & feel from the rest of The Defenders series (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage & Iron Fist) that we’ve seen. More gritty, down in the gutter, dark, grim bloody theme to perhaps spin out a new set of darker Marvel series like the rumoured Moon Knight and/or Shang-Chi, Master of Kung-Fu? Also GREAT casting of Ebon Moss-Bachrach as David Lieberman / Micro. Wonderful actor who Jon Bernthal will be able to play off of. Lastly, the use of “One” by Metallica sets a stunning tone for this trailer & the upcoming series. Well done, Marvel & Netlfix. Well done. I’m excited!
