If the lights went out in the middle of cooking dinner, would you know how to change a fuse to get the power back on again? Do you even know where your fuse box is and whether it has fuses or circuit breakers? Most modern or renovated <a href='http://www.bevanrobinsonelectrical.com.au/news/tips-advice/common-wiring-problems/'title='houses'> houses will have their fuse boxes replaced with circuit breakers. If your house has circuit breakers, you don’t need to know how to change a fuse, you just reset the trip switch.

Finding the fuse box

Finding the fuse box and fuse that needs changing in the dark can be a challenge so it’s always a good idea to keep a torch in the cupboard where the spare fuse wire is kept. The fuse board can be found in the same box where the electricity metre is found, usually on the outside of your home, often near the front door.

Working out which fuse has blown

If it’s just a case of a blown fuse, power will only be affected in certain parts of the house. If there’s no electricity in any part of the house then chances are there’s a power outage that’s coming from outside your home. Use your smartphone to check for power outages in your area.

When you open the fuse box, the fuses are a series of white porcelain ‘plugs’ in row on the fuse board. Fuses should be labelled to tell you what parts of the house they supply power to. A standard home will usually have one fuse for an electric stove, one for electric hot water systems, two for appliances and one for the lights. Remember to turn off the main power switch before pulling out any fuses to inspect them.

How to change the fuse

Whether you need to change a fuse that’s blown or reset the circuit breaker, before even opening the fuse box it’s important to turn off any electrical appliances that were running when the power went out. You’ll need a flathead screwdriver and fuse wire to change a fuse. Make sure you’ve turned off the main power switch. Here’s how you change a fuse:

• Pull out the fuses one at a time and inspect the wire to see if it has blown. Apply gentle pressure to the fuse wire to see whether it has broken.

• Once you’ve identified the fuse that’s blown you’ll need fuse wire with the same amp rating as the one that’s blown. It’s important that you use fuse wire with the same amp rating. If you use the wrong fuse wire, you risk starting a house fire.

• Replace the fuse in the fuse board and then turn the power back on. If the fuse blows again as soon as you turn the power on, it’s time to call an electrician.

When to call an expert

It’s not only against the law to carry out any repairs on your fuse box, whether your own or rent, it’s also downright dangerous. Here’s when you need to call in an expert electrician.

• If you have to keep changing a blown fuse. This could signal wiring problems and if it’s not addressed could potentially lead to a house fire.

• If you have a circuit breaker instead of a fuse box and resetting the trip switch doesn’t bring the power back on – there are no fuses that can be changed and you run a serious risk of electrocution attempting to fix any problem.

• If the same fuse keeps blowing or the circuit breaker tripping it can mean you’ve got too many appliances plugged into power boards and you should ask an electrician to put in some extra power points.

Fuse boxes can be potentially dangerous and not using the correct fuse can lead to house fires.

If you’re not sure how to change a fuse or your fuse box needs repairing or replacing, call the friendly and qualified staff at Bevan Robinson Electrical . Call Bevan or Robyn on (07) 3893 2792.

Is your hot water system on the blink making your blood boil and not your water? It is an expensive, yet essential, item to replace, not to mention the inconvenience of cold showers while you await replacements! With so many types of hot water systems available with varying price tags and benefits, trying to decipher what is right for you can be very daunting.

Clearing up hot water system confusion

Hot water systems are items that are replaced roughly every decade and there is a plethora of terminology you’ll need to grasp to make the right choice in systems. Here are some explanations to help you consider which is right for you and your family.

Tariffs

It’s important to ensure that all hot water systems with a storage tank are appropriately sized for your family’s needs.

• Economy Tariff: water is heated during off-peak times. Provides plenty of hot water.

• Continuous Tariff: usually connected to instantaneous systems with smaller capacity. More expensive as water is heated continuously.

Storage hot water systems

• Electric

If you’re thinking of replacing one of these hot water systems, think again. Not only are they quite inefficient, they’re also being phased out in Australia. Consider gas or solar powered systems that will save the environment and money. Various rebates apply when replacing these hot water systems.

• Gas

This type of hot water system is most efficient for households with 4+ occupants. If you don’t have gas access on your property however, this may not be an option for you.

Heat pumps

Heat pumps are beneficial when you don’t have gas or solar access. More energy is consumed by the heat pump trying to heat water faster, however it uses less energy than an equivalent type of electric storage system. Heat pumps also increase greenhouse gas emissions more than a gas powered system so are best operated on an economy tariff. They can be quite noisy, and should be installed clear of any neighbouring homes. The experienced staff at Bevan Robinson Electrical can advise the most appropriate area of your to install these pumps in Brisbane.

Instantaneous hot water systems

• Electric

These systems are expensive to operate. Instantaneous electric hot water systems use a high amount of energy and have a smaller capacity than other hot water system options. Some are now fitted with a temperature gauge to monitor energy efficiency.

• Gas

While being more cost effective than electric models, this does depend on whether they’re powered by LPG or Natural Gas. LPG can be more expensive and not as environmentally friendly. Those gas systems rated 5-Stars and higher are considered the next best thing to solar heating for environmental purposes. There may be fees and supply charges applicable to new installations of natural gas.

Solar hot water systems and boosters

The most environmentally friendly hot water system is solar. With these, the sun provides 80% of the energy needed to heat your water in Queensland. Solar is also the most cost effective option. During winter or cloudy periods, solar hot water systems can be boosted by gas or electric power if need be. Collector panels are usually installed on the roof with the storage tank alongside or on the ground.

You can boost your hot water system in 3 ways; gas, electric and heat pumps.

• Gas boosters provide the least greenhouse gas emissions and can be part of a ground storage tank or instantaneous.

• Electric boosters provide the second least greenhouse gas emissions and are the cheapest option to purchase and to run on an economy tariff.

• Heat Pump Boosters provide the most greenhouse gas emissions

Whether you’re leaning towards, gas, solar, electric or heat pumps, you’ll need to have your new hot water system installed by a fully licensed electrician. Installation costs vary according to the kind of hot water system you choose and the location of the system and your home. Choosing a hot water system installer is about choosing quality over price – be sure to choose an <a href='http://www.bevanrobinsonelectrical.com.au/news/tips-advice/qld-test-tagging-laws-obligations-industrial-electrician/'title='electrician'> electrician you can trust.

Ask one of the qualified staff at Bevan Robinson Electrical now for an installation quote

Over time, power cords on electrical appliances become worn with use and age. Often this causes them to become damaged or frayed. You may think they may still be safe to use, but think again. Damaged power cords are a potential hazard to have around the house! If you continue to use damaged power cords, the consequences could include:

• Power shortages
• Permanent and expensive damage to your electrical appliances
• Nasty electrical shocks
• Electrical fires

Damaged power cords can mean that the insulation around the wiring is compromised – allowing electricity to flow between the various wires. A damaged “earth wire” can knock out the built-in “electrical safety-net” in your appliance and pose real risk to your life.

I have a damaged power cord! What should I do?

The safest thing you can do is call a professional to come test your electronic device and fix it. We at Bevan Robinson Electrical Service pride ourselves on our quality services and ensuring your product is safe to use again. We fix a range of electronic products from small electrical to microwaves and fridges, so no job is too big or too small for us. Electrical safety testing is one of those things that people forget to do – booking an annual electrical safety test (usually at the start of winter) can catch fraying cords before they become a problem. Ensuring heaters, electric blankets and other potentially problematic electric appliances are all safe is the best thing you can do for your family.

Can’t I just repair it myself?

Repairing electronic devices on your own is a hazardous and risky move. If you attempt to use a home repaired appliance, you risk getting electrocuted or starting an electrical fire. Don’t take that chance. It’s not just about your family’s safety, it’s about risking your home and invalidating your insurance claim – all to avoid a simple and affordable electrical safety test. You need an experienced electrician, like those at Bevan Robinson Electrical Service, to ensure your product is safe to use.

Tips on preventing further damage/wear to power cords

Once you’re product has been repaired, you must ensure it stays in prime condition. Here are some tips to avoid any further damage to your product:

• When you aren’t using it, keep the device stored out of the way. This prevents any wear and tear to the cord.
• Pull the device out of the wall by the plug, not the cord. This prevents damage that could be done to the cord due to excessive pulling.
• Do not bend the cord excessively. This damages the protective layer around the internal wires and can cause the cord to wear faster.

Service is our business so whether you need a power cord fixed or an electrical appliance repaired, Bevan Robinson Electrical Service is here to help. We believe there is no point buying a new product when you can have one fixed so easily.

For more information don’t hesitate to contact us !

Bevan Electrical is a family business that offers the good old-fashioned service which is often lost in larger companies. We take pride in the fact we are a family team who work together to achieve superior results. We have listed some reasons why we believe that you are better rewarded when you choose to work with a business like ours.

1: A personal touch

A family business will offer you a personalised service that includes attention to the finer details. When you work with a family business you will be partnering with professionals who care deeply about their work, and find new and effective ways to express this to their clients. With a family business, you will be working with real people, not a large organisation.

2: Talk straight to the owners

Very few large businesses will allow you to talk directly to the owners, but family businesses are run by the owners. You will never be bogged down on the phones, being passed from one person to another. When you team up with a family in business, they will be able to communicate with you directly and efficiently.

3: Hardworking

People in a family business are well-known for being hard working. This is because they know that all of their work efforts will directly reward them, not their employer. A family business will go that extra mile to get the job done right.

4: Dedicated to customer satisfaction

Customer satisfaction is essential in a family business, because it affects the business’s reputation. Satisfied customers are more likely to refer their own family and friends onto a product or service, because they believe it is high quality. A family business is dedicated to customer satisfaction, because they know it is one of the best marketing tools that their business can use.

5: Support for the local community

When you team up with businesses in your community, you are supporting the local economy and this will flow back to you and your own family. Keeping it local helps everyone in the community you live in, and local businesses will always perform better because they have a great understanding of their customers in that area. They know the people and places in the community, and can provide them the best service for their needs.

As parents, we do whatever we can to keep our children safe. But sometimes, we don’t consider the dangers that are right under our noses. More than 50 Australians die in house fires every year. A reliable, working smoke alarm will alert you and your family in the event of a house fire.

Smoke alarms are an essential appliance for homes that can be instrumental in saving the lives of yourself and your loved ones. But they’re not just a good idea – smoke alarm installation is a legal requirement in all Queensland residential buildings.

Queensland legislation states that all homes build before 1 July 1997 must be fitted with at least one 9 volt battery operated smoke alarm, while homes built after July 1997 must have at least one 240 volt hard-wired smoke alarm. If a home built before this date is significantly renovated, the owner must upgrade the smoke alarm.

Even if you are not living in the property, you still have a responsibility to install and maintain smoke alarms. The legislation instructs landlords to test alarms and replace batteries when necessary or within 30 days prior to a new tenant moving in. The Residential Tenancies and Rooming Accommodation Act 2008 (Section 192) provides allowances for landlords enter occupied properties for the purposes of smoke alarm maintenance, subject to appropriate notice. Landlords must also provide a document detailing smoke alarm maintenance obligations at the beginning of a new tenancy.

Smoke alarms should be fitted outside sleeping areas and on each level of the home or unit. If you sleep with your bedroom door closed, you should also install an alarm in your bedroom. Queensland Fire and Emergency Services recommend photoelectric alarms over isonisation types, as they look for particles of combustion so are not as prone to false alarms. Alarms should comply with the Australian Standard AS 3786-1993 and have Standards Australia Mark or Scientific Services Laboratory (SSL) certification.

Smoke Alarm Do’s:

Do install your alarm on the ceiling or at the very least, as high on a wall as possible. As we learned back in science class, heat rises.

Check the battery once a month and replace batteries at least once a year

Keep smoke alarms clean as dust can interfere with their operation

Replace smoke alarms before their expiry date

Smoke Alarm Don’ts:

Install alarms near windows, fans or air conditioners, as breezes and air movement can blow the smoke away from the alarm, rendering them ineffective

Install alarms in bathrooms, kitchens or any area where smoke and steam can cause a false alarms

Paint smoke alarms

Turn off smoke alarms in the event of a false alarm – try turning on a fan or opening a window instead

It’s resolution season, and with resolution season comes a host of DIY jobs, handymen promises and private agreements regarding the state of ones home. While we’re not suggesting your carefully pondered goals are anything to dismiss, some resolutions aren’t supposed to be kept, particularly those regarding the home. So while you plan your DIY projects and survey the house, remember the following jobs should be left the experts at Bevan Robinson Electrical.

Fan Repair and Installation

Ceiling fans have been around for a very long time, hanging around even after the powerhouse air-con tackled the market and supplanted the humble blades as the coolant of choice. We won’t even mention the power bill that comes with having “the best”, as it’s been well documented the ceiling fan is certainly the most power efficient solution on the market. If you’re considering installing one of your own for this reasons, or repairing another that is already there, rethink your idea. The ceiling fan itself may look like a simple piece of engineering, but the wiring connecting the fan to the main box is a complex mechanism. A potentially deadly, complex mechanism. No amount of YouTube videos can prepare you for what’s up there or what’s required.

Washing Machine Repair

Within your washing machine lurks a computer; granted, it’s certainly not packing the same amount of punch as your desktop beast or even your laptop – think smartphone stripped down, attached to a motherboard. And therein lies the rub, because modern washing machines are attached to a motherboard, they contain circuits you wouldn’t expect. Unless you know washing machine repair intimately, across a range of brands (brands do differ greatly from year to model), opening up the machine itself to tinker around with the motherboard is the best way to ensure the washing machine won’t work the next time you turn it on. You may even make it worse. You may blow the circuit or cause the machine to short out.

Rewiring the House

You saw a guy or girl on the internet, they rewired their house without help – they weren’t hurt or adversely affected. Truthfully, this person either a) absolutely fluked it b) had an electrician off-camera guiding them or c) hold an electrical qualification themselves. Don’t put yourself into the a category – flukes are very rare in this industry. Fizzy, fried hair on the other hand (or much worse) is a regular occurrence when everyday DIY’ers compete with years of experience, education and up-skilling. While it’s great to take matters into your own hands, any wiring work should be completed by a qualified professional, in a safe and secure way. Don’t risk your life.

Lives wires are a risky business. Dead wires are still risky. In these opening stages we must insist, never tamper with your own wiring – you may think you know what you’re doing, what could happen and how to handle it. You don’t. Electricity is a brutal and powerful force that takes no prisoners if something goes awry. And if you’re nosing around in your household wiring without industry training, it probably will.

Now we have that out of the way, we’ve put together three common signs your dream home has a wiring problem – it’s better to pick up these issues before you purchase, but if it’s too late and you’ve already signed the line, here’s what you’re dealing with. The best way to fix all of these issues? Contact Bevan Robinson Electrical.

Wiring Shorts

You may have noticed when something goes wrong in your circuitry, the whole section shuts down, like an element blowing on an electrical cooktop. If your home was built in the last fifteen years, it’s very likely it has a circuit breaker very much like this – older homes are fitted with fuse boxes. You can easily turn everything back on at the circuit breaker and very often, it won’t happen again. But if these shut downs are a frequent feature of your day or night, it could be sign of a serious problem in the circuitry. And no, turning it off and on won’t fix it. A potential consequence of this is a house fire. Be safe and get it checked.

Horror Movie Lights

Do you feel like you’re living in a haunted house or slasher flick? Do your lights flicker incessantly, causing your stomach to turn over? Older homes are notorious for flickering light syndrome, as they weren’t built to withstand so many modern appliances – multiple computers, TVs, fridges, washing machines, microwaves, lamps, phone chargers and more – we know how to overload our outlets. If fixtures give you the speedy on/off treatment consistently, it’s time to speak to an electrician and maybe schedule an upgrade.

You Can’t Touch This

If your lights or fixtures buzz, shock, vibrate or burn you whilst being switched on, plugged in, used or unplugged, you have a problem. There could one wire spoiling it for all wires, or it could be many compounding the problem, leading to bigger, more dangerous issues later. Char marks or dead outlets are serious give away signs of an underlying issue – never try and fix it yourself.

Be safe, be secure and remember, always ask questions about the wiring before buying a home. Ask to see reports and get a qualified electrician out to test the premises before it becomes yours. If it is already yours, stay on top of small issues now and guard against life threatening ones later.

Australia has one of those climates where you shouldn’t expect anything and prepare for everything. Wild summers, mild autumns, changeable winters and bright springs, many Queenslanders are reliant on their air-conditioners, heaters, fans and dehumidifiers to transform the most demanding climates into something tolerable. Like the weather, bill shock can be relentless, as our incomes are outpaced by costs and many of us start to second guess our faithful appliances.

Are your electronics bumping up your power bill? Yes. Every time you use electricity to somehow change your environment (even if it’s sweltering), you are flushing dollars down the drain – although, the rising cost of electricity can leave the most frugal and cost savvy person in the dust. So what do you do about it? Without switching everything off and freezing to death in winter, here are some real world solutions to bring the cost of living down while turning on the air-con.

Unplug Electronics After Use

Phone charges, computers, televisions, kettles, toasters and more. The only appliances that require constant juice are your fridge and an alarm clock – if you don’t use an alarm clock, scratch that one off the list. All other electronics need to be turned off at the socket after you’re finished with them, as they can still draw electricity down the line and slowly but surely add whole dollars to the power bill. It’s hard to remember at first, but if you get into the habit now your hip pocket will thank you later.

The Cold Water Wash

Washing clothes in hot water is a first world luxury that most items don’t actually benefit from, unless you’re combatting a hardy stain or following washing instructions to the letter. For a general cycle, pass up the heated appeal and go for a cold water wash – this one step can save up to $100 per year.

Air It Out

Further on the washing segment, unless you live in a shoebox city apartment, there’s no way you should be drying every load via electricity. Let the tumber dryer gather dust for a while and plan ahead, washing a few loads a week and hanging them out to dry in the sun – quick, Mother Nature has yet to be monetised, it won’t be free forever!

Switch Filters

The air-con unit can be a life saver, particularly in the scorching summer months. When was the last time the air-conditioning filters were refreshed? It may sound too simple, but a monthly change will cut serious dollars off your bill; dirty filters make your unit work overtime, clocking up heavy wattage.

Lights Out

Leaving the light on for no reason is a direct waste of money – when you leave the room, turn the light off. It sounds very basic but it’s a common behavior across most Queensland households and one that drives up the end of term dollar signs. Most electricity companies don’t care if you’ve been forgetful, they will charge you out the nose anyway.
