The Art of Sharing at Beverly's

Sharing. It's something that we, as crafters, are good at. We share our tools at crop nights, our knitting patterns, our scissors, our finished projects and our passion for creating. Sharing is good!

This week, members of the Beverly's team have spent time in an amazing sharing environment.

Beverly's recently joined Sierra Pacific Crafts, a cooperative organization of independently owned craft stores. One of the benefits of being part of this organization is the wealth of creativity and ideas that are shared amongst the members. Not only are we learning about new materials and supplies that we can share with you, our customers, but we are also learning creative new ways to use those materials and supplies. And members of our team shared some great things as well!

There are over 120 stores all across the country in the Sierra Pacific Crafts group, and each store brings a fresh perspective on crafting. Ideas have been flying, models have been inspiring, and our team is so excited to bring these ideas back to share in our stores with you!

Keep an eye on our blog, and if you live near one of our California stores, be sure to stop in to see what we have created. We'll share our enthusiasm and how-to's for all the new things we've learned. And if you're somewhere else in the United States, you might want to visit one of the other stores in the Sierra Pacific group.

Star Struck at the CHA

Some people go to Hollywood to meet stars. Serious crafters go to the CHA.

This was my first trip to CHA, the Craft and Hobby Association’s show in Anaheim, California. As a new buyer for Beverly’s I came to Anaheim not knowing what to expect. I certainly didn’t expect to meet some of the all-stars of the crafting world, and a TV personality to boot!

I met Tim Holtz, Teresa Collins, Heidi Swapp and even Cathy Cano-Murillo, the “Crafty Chica” herself. I shamelessly took photos with them all! But one of my best star struck moments was meeting David Tutera.

Darice has a new wedding line, designed by David Tutera, the host of the popular “My Fair Wedding” on the WE. It is such a beautiful line of wedding accessories, and we will be carrying it in our stores! Watch for it in the very near future. Even if you are already married, this line might make you consider renewing your vows just so that you can use it!

The line includes everthing a bride needs to make her day unique, in a neutral palette that will allow her to blend the elements of the collection with her choice of wedding colors. The attention to detail on this affordable line of wedding accessories will appeal to many. From invitations and favor boxes to rhinestone bling for a bouquet or shoes, David Tutera has put his signature touch on each and every item.

Darice hosted an event with David during the CHA, and after the event, I had the opportunity to meet him. While waiting to do so, he needed a pen and I offered one of my samples from the Marvy Uchida booth. A few minutes later, when it was my turn to take a photo with him, he said “Hey, you just helped me out!” Yes, David. That was me.

So, I admit it, I was a shameless, star struck fan at the CHA. But I also saw so much crafter’s eye candy…beautiful products, inspiring models and amazing innovations. Now comes the hard part of my job – choosing the best of the best for our stores. But David Tutera’s wedding line from Darice has already been chosen and will be available soon! I hope you’ll stop in soon to see all the great new products we have in store for you!

Spring 2012 - Color as seen on the fashion runway

Consumers look to early spring for renewed energy, optimism, and the promise of a brighter day. Being an election year there is a feeling of the unknown. COLOR sets the mood and reflects different styles. This year customers are adding pieces to their existing color pallet.

TANGERINE TANGO - is the exciting juicy orangeade, providing a jolt of energy, radiating warmth and cheer. It along with an orange cast Red called POPPY. These are at the top of the picks for 2012. As we get closer to fall Deep Red will be very strong. A close 2nd for Spring will be “solar Power” CANARY YELLOW.

GERANIUM - is a a brighter pink blending in with the other colors. FUCHSIA - is another bold color melding into red, purple, and pink.

INK-blue, a classic maritime hue, giving order and calmness to the mind. It is being used in home dec Ekot for pillows and outdoor sun-in-shade pillows.

TURQUOISE-This entire blue story is going to stay strong, along with Tiffany Blue, and Hyacinth.

GRASS GREEN- (a more grayed blue green) is tied in with nature, save the planet,and is a symbol of healing and renewal. It blends with all the colors above.

ICE CREAM COLORS ARE -SOFT PINK,SWEET LILAC,SOFT PEACH, AND creamy yellow. These colors are being seen in soft flowing fabrics, and in soft prints for the Victorian look.All of these colors work together along with Egret white, taupe and gray.

NEUTRALS-honey and sandstone,are very strong in apparel as well as Home Dec. In Quilting the Stonehenge from Northcott is an example of this look.

HOME DEC- Interior colors in the home are going neutral.There is a shift for a more casual lifestyle.Neutrals are calming after dealing with work and the busy electronic world.The Kitchen is becoming a focal point, using steel, stone, marble or ceramic. Mid tones are used for walls.The expressive vibrant colors are reserved for the small electronics,dinnerware, serving pieces,and accessories.Food prep products and gadgets, miking bowls, and Mixers. We have a kitchen section in our fab department, including prints for table runners, table cloths, place-mats, aprons etc.
Pillows, are items being made from the brighter fabrics. They can be changed out.

JEWELRY AND FASHION ACCESSORIES

BEAD TRENDS-Beading is a feeling of expression, creating how you feel. Customers today want customized designs. Designs are inspired from colors we see, sights we see, as well as fashion and Art. Altered art is playing a big part in jewelry making. Styles are funny ,funky, and bold. Lots of chain is being used hanging stones, charms off of chain. Large necklaces are being talked about for next fall. Cousins has new designs as well as Blue Moon.I have some other designers we are working with for the charms and the chain.

ACCESSORIES-EMBELLISHMENTS--
The royal wedding appears to have impacted the hat & hair accessory mkt. with flowers and feathers on hats and headbands, as well as bracelets, clothing ,and feathers in the hair.
Ruffles- in clothing, yarn, on bags, bottom of aprons, children's clothing and ruffled fabrics.
SCARVES-Very trendy, we have new ones coming from Imagine’it. A new trend may be adding beads, charms and ribbon to the soft scarves. Scarves look beautiful lined up in our wearable aisle.

Tangerine Tango is the Color to Watch!

The Pantone Color Institute has determined that you will have a spicy orange crush in 2012. The institute, which studies color trends in fashion and determines a dominate shade for the forthcoming year, announced today that a color called Tangerine Tango will brighten the mood for next year. "Tangerine Tango is an orange with a lot of depth to it," Pantone executive director Leatrice Eiseman said in a statement announcing the decision.
Tangerine Tango is as sunny as the 2011 color of the year, Honeysuckle. Last year's color was chosen to lift spirits, and it seems that 2012's punchy citrus shade was picked for much the same reason.
"Reminiscent of the radiant shadings of a sunset, Tangerine Tango marries the vivaciousness and adrenaline rush of red with the friendliness and warmth of yellow, to form a high-visibility, magnetic hue that emanates heat and energy," Eiseman said.

Well, everyone, the Christmas season is officially upon us! And as crafters, quilters and generally creative people, I'm sure you have people on your gift list who are expecting something beautifully hand crafted just for them (I know I do!). But if you're anything like me, you've waited till the last minute and have run out of crafting time (um...I know I have!).

Never fear. Here at Beverly's we've come up with our own version of the 12 Days of Christmas... Starting tomorrow and every day through Christmas Eve, we'll post a creative, simple gift idea with all the instructions. Keep an eye on our blog as we count down to Christmas, crafting all the way!

Goosebumps in December!

I am not a fan of scary movies. They give me goosebumps, and not in a good way. But last week, I got a different kind of Goosebumps...from Tsukineko! And believe me, I loved them!

Goosebumps is a new texture spray that can be used on multiple surfaces; paper, canvas, glass, acetate, they all take on a new dimension with this fabulous new product! Goosebumps comes in three different formulas--matte, gloss and shimmer--for tons of crafting possibilities.

Sprayed on a sheet of plain or printed cardstock, Goosebumps instantly gives the paper texture, dimension, and a bit of shine.

Used with a mask, you can create your own patterns on cardstock. Think about how fun it would be to create your own background paper. And masks don't have to be specialized...you could use different household objects like rubber bands, coins, nuts and bolts. Goosebumps will wash off if you remove the masks befor allowing it to dry.

For this card, I used blue painter's tape right on the front of the card. I sprayed on gloss Goosebumps and allowed it to dry. After removing the tape, I inked over the entire card for a tone-on-tone jacquard stripe effect.

Here, I sprayed Goosebumps directly on a rubber stamp, and stamped on a book page. When the Goosebumps dried, I dragged some distress ink over the page to define the edges.

Here's my result on a mirror using matte Goosebumps and a stencil. Instant frosted glass! (It's hard to take a picture of a mirror...please excuse the quality and trust me that this looks so much prettier in person!)

Combine Goosebumps with Tsukineko's new Delicata metallic ink and the results are stunning! Delicata is a metallic that won't tarnish or lose it's luster like some other inks, making it a great option for keepsake projects. It's also a great alternative to gold leafing for more delicate surfaces.

These products will be arriving in your local Beverly's around December 18, 2011. So, ask Santa to tuck some Goosebumps and Delicata in your stocking this Chrismas. You'll be glad you did!

Social Crafting Ruffled Canvas Bag

On Wednesday evening, customers gathered in our local Beverly's stores for an evening of Social Crafting. This month's project was an adorable Ruffled Canvas Bag! Using a simple bag, a fat quarter of fabric, tulle and wired ribbon (yes...wired!) participants spent the evening creating a stylish tote to keep for themselves or to give as a gift. A simple running stitch for gathering is the only sewing necessary, and that's only for the fabric and tulle. The ribbon is gathered using the wired edge, and everything is attached using Fabri-Tac glue!

2011 Christmas Trends

Decorating for Christmas this year has so many wonderful options! Gone are the days of metallic garlands and plain glass balls. With all the gorgeous ornaments, ribbons and flowers available now, your tree can become a reflection of you and your personality! And now that you can find quality, affordable artificial trees that are pre-lit, more people are setting up multiple themed trees that match their homes.

For an elegant feel, try a Venetian tree. In tones of gold, burgundy and dark purple, and decorated with masks, keys, crosses and music, this tree would be showstopping in a formal living room! In St. Nick's Vineyard, wine themed ornaments in shades of purple, gold and green would make a perfect backdrop for a holiday wine tasting. A Peacock tree in teal, green and copper would be stunning as well. Think of how beautiful a topper of peacock feathers and copper ribbon would be on your tree!

If you're more traditional, a Merry & Bright tree in red and lime might be more your style. Top this tree with a big bow made from glittery holiday ribbon, and use festive and even funky ornaments in the color scheme for a tree that's fun and whimsical. Or how about Winter Wonderland in frosty shades of silver, blue and white? Crowned with a top hat and garlanded with a scarf, you'll invoke the feeling of Frosty all season long.

Want to go with an untraditional tree? With glittery shells, fish, mermaids and seahorses in blue, teal, pink, lime and purple, an Under the Sea tree can be magical!

Or recreate the Rainforest using tropical flowers, parrots, monkeys and frogs. A huge spray of hibiscus and fern at the top of the tree will really make a statement. Add some animal print ribbon to complete the theme.

For a daughter's room, how about some Winter Glam? Little shoes and purses in hot pink, black and white, with some zebra print ribbon would be perfect! What little girl (or big girl, for that matter) wouldn't love a glam tree in her room? We topped ours with a pair of REAL shoes, painted and glittered to match!

Let's not forget the boys! A Woodland tree with bears, birds and sleds, a Cowboy tree with boots, saddles, horses and burlap or even a sports tree with ornaments in their favorite team colors will bring a smile to your favorite guy's face whenever he walks in the room.

While I still keep a family tree full of the kids' pipecleaner and glitter creations, I'm looking forward to creating a Candyland tree in my kitchen this year, filled with cupcakes, candy and gingerbread men! Good Day Sacramento at Beverly's Yards of Fabric!

On Tuesday, November 22nd, Courtney Dempsey from Good Day Sacramento, a popular morning show in the greater Sacramento area, brought the program's Designer Challenge to our own Beverly's Yards of Fabric Sacramento in Carmichael!

Two designers, Uniquka Johnson of UJ Fashions, and Latiya Abdullah of Tailand Designs, arrived bright and early along with the Channel 31 TV crew. They each received a mystery bag of fabric to work with and two hours to create an original garment. Each designer was given a five minute shopping spree to gather notions and additional materials to use in their design. But of course, there was a twist! At the end of the five minutes, the designers received another mystery bag with instructions that the contents had to be included in their finished garment. Inside the bag? Burlap and a brightly colored feather boa!

Beverly's Yards of Fabric Sacramento provided all of the materials, workspace, sewing machines, ironing space and dress forms for the designers to use. Good Day Sacramento checked in three times during their show. The first segment followed the designers on their shopping spree, the second segment included designer interviews, and in the third segment the winner was chosen.

The judges of the Challenge were Beverly's own Bridget Young, and Lisa Kennedy Watrous, a Sacramento blogger from the site Closet Candy. Since the judges were split on their final decision, the news anchors back in the studio had the final vote. The winner? Uniquka from UJ Fashions and her adorable short dress.

Everyone had a great time, and we hope to be a part of this great event again next year! Thanks Uniquka, Latiya, and Good Day Sacramento!
