Felicity and I are both going to the High Times Medical Cannabis Cup on June 22 and 23, 2013. We’re hoping to meet (and maybe even smoke with) some of you folks in person, talk about anything, give out swag (buttons, stickers, lighters), have a great time, and not green out!

Oh yeah, also on Sunday at 1:30 PM I’ll be appearing in a panel called “The Impact of Social Media In the Cannabis Community”, where I hope to be the oldest, coolest, and most connected participant! :-)

You can buy tickets online now, including the coveted VIP Pass that gets you into the Saturday night party with Ghostface Killah, Raekwon and GZA of the Wu-Tang Clan. And you don’t have to be a legal California patient to go to any or all of the panel sessions, just to smoke on-site. Nugs and hugs!

I spotted this cool colorful bunch of containers at The Dollar Tree and figured it was worth $1 to hold some of the miscellaneous strains I have around in small quantities. But then I got it home and thought…”Whoa…purple: Purple Kush!” Then I said “I have some Blue Dream around here too…” and the next thing you know, I had the whole idea glowing in my head.

And what perfect timing too, because today is the anniversary of my very first post on Reddit, and I have a feeling /r/trees is gonna love it. There are still some empty slots, but these are all legit strains, and they’re all correctly labeled, you bet. Nugs and hugs!

That’s probably how I’d write this afternoon’s antics up if I were one of those NEJM guys.

So I was hanging out with Felicity and one of our friends, T-Res. T-Res had showed up with a little container of Cherry Pie “and some hash”. T-Res is a very, very calm guy, the kind who’s seen serious shit go down and just raises an eyebrow. He said, “Get your vape” so we loaded some of his stuff on top of some of my stuff. I’m pretty sure I had indica in there, since the last time I had used it was the night before, and I always vape some strong indica at night so I will sleep and not toss and turn all night wondering about stuff.

We sat there all talking and vaping (except Felicity) for quite some time. At one point I was glad I stopped, because I was just on the verge of too high for comfort, but then I felt good again. We talked some more and he picked up my MFLB because there was plenty left and noticed the batteries were dead.

“So, let’s get the bong,” some fool (me) said.

I dug out my Bottaro bong and dumped the contents of the trench into the bowl. My only saving graces here were (a) indica and (b) I let him hit the bong first.

He hit it big-time, and even coughed a bit, which he never does. Luckily he got most of the goodies, but I took quite a bit hit for someone who never smokes.

A Slice of Cherry Pie and Reality

That Cherry Pie (plus, I guess, the hash…) is pretty amazing stuff, and it’s a noticeable difference when you get all the cannabinoids from a big hit of burning weed all at once. Very soon I was going past the moon, the double digits, and my physical comfort zone. Felicity knew the signs and watched as I stood up and started laying down on the floor. This is an old trick I try to teach people to do when they feel dizzy from smoking too much or too fast (and usually both), as it is moderately difficult to fall off the floor.

From plenty of past experience with greenouts, I wanted to avoid passing out, but mostly to avoid paranoia and panic. That’s what’s actually more dangerous for me than passing out, because I can easily work myself up into a serious health emergency that way. Luckily, as I mentioned above, this stuff was all indica, or I likely would have been freaking out good and proper. But it’s still scary to be laying on the ground and knowing some people who care about you are sitting there worrying.

I knew that this was just smoking and there’s a characteristic time/highness curve, so this peak would only last about half an hour. Of course, as we all know, THC gives you massive time distortion, so it just seemed like 2 hours before I finally felt better. At one point I was seeing flaming words with my eyes closed (something about earthworms and spaghetti). But all was well, I never actually passed out or felt really bad, and I lived to toke another day.

As I previously wrote, a week or so ago I began some experiments to find out if infusing coconut oil with cannabis worked differently at different temperatures.

Methodology

Oil: 118°F, 140°F, 180°F, 220°F, 260°F, 300°F

Each batch was made as identically as possible, using 2 tablespoons of coconut oil and 0.5 grams decarbed weed (Super Silver Sour Diesel Haze, a sativa-heavy hybrid) heated for 2 hours (except the 118°F batch, which was heated for 4 hours per the instructions I remembered seeing for that one). All doses were consumed as a single teaspoon of well-stirred liquid oil poured over a bowl of salad, immediately after eating a meal so as to preserve First Pass Effect.

Observations

What follows are the contemporaneous notes I made as I took each randomized dose, not knowing which temperature was which until all the results were in. Here are the doses in order of consumption.

1. After 45 minutes, this came on strongly at about [4.5] and soon settled down to a solid [4] that lasted a bit more than 6 hours. My head felt a bit foggy all day, but less than it does when I feel depressed. The high was very indica-like with body effects such as lassitude.

2. After 50 minutes, this started slowly but noticeably at around [3], and gradually crept up to about [3.5], but with a distinct sativa feel. Absolutely no body effects, suddenly got in the mood to write (and did so!). Felt “lighter” mentally than dose 1; no fogginess at all.

3. Next to nothing…very subtle, perhaps a [2] or so. It’s varied between feeling like “a bit of sativa” and “a bit indica”, or at least a bit foggy. But I’m going to need a few vape hits to fall asleep tonight, so essentially nothing.

4. I’m gonna call this as a [3.2]…and very similar to the effect of the weak beer known by that number :-) A clear head, but not much of a high, and no pain relief at all. Better than nothing, but most people wouldn’t even feel it.

5. Nothing whatever after two hours in. Update: but feeling definitely odd after 3 hours in! It’s not a normal high, have some visual distortion and a lot of “hitting the wrong keys”. Not even sure what level, because I don’t feel anywhere near a [5], but I still wouldn’t drive because not sure where this is going.

6. A solid [4], great for watching an old movie with Felicity.

Results

OK, now that it’s all done, here are the results…

1. 300 2. 140 3. 180 4. 118 5. 260 6. 220

Or, putting it another way:

There seems to be an anomaly for the 180°F result, but that’s the problem with one-off experiments and why we need more and better data that we can analyze statistically (again, I’m going to ask if anyone knows a good laboratory interested in getting a lot of publicity). Anyway, what all this seems to show — and remember, I was using pretty low doses on purpose, approximately 80 mg. of cannabis — is that virtually any reasonable temperature will work, but that higher temperatures seem to start bringing more sedative effects to the fore.
