It is not a very recent photograph for me. I just thought about it recently since one of my friends on the trip requested me to find it for them and it reminded me that I never posted much from Italy at all on my blog. I do really like the photo as the sun was getting low in the sky during my first night on this trip through mid and southern italy. I had meant to post a more recent photograph this week and I will get to more recent photographs soon but lately I’ve been putting a lot of effort into organizing my digital and non-digital life as of late. Maybe I will post something about the whole organization process because I’m sure many people fall into the same issues I do, and I would love to share what I’m doing and learn from what others have done as well. But until then my life seems far more disorganized during the process than it did before it. Maybe it’s common that things get worse all before they get better? But either way looking back at photos from months or years past always bring back some great memories and emotions. I’m now dreaming of travel again even so soon after my last trip…maybe I’m an addict.

Jet lag, tired, anxious…it seems like the regular feelings as I travel home from being away for a while. I had thought it would have been easy to keep up with writing while away, but that had been harder than I had expected. It is amazing how time just slips through your fingers when so much else is happening. I had thought I didn’t have time previously and then I truly did not have a grasp over the time I did have when it was racing by seemingly faster than I had recognized. When you travel for a long time to it also seems as if your life back at home was so long ago, another era, and the time and life you are living now has been lived for longer than it really has been. But either way reality is slowly settling in as the jet lag fades and I should try to be back to my normal schedule come this upcoming week. This is from the recent few days, one of the snapshots from my trip. I have so many more photos from Essaouira and my days in Morocco that hopefully in the near future I can try to share some of them. This is from the early morning up on the Ramparts around the city, the cannons sitting silent waiting for foes that have past many years ago but still standing duty looking out into the ocean beyond. It was so peaceful (and windy) up here in the wind city of Africa, I almost didn’t want to leave.

I don’t know how or why it took me so long to get to Portugal. It has been one of the large western europe countries that I never seemed to manage to visit (the other big one being Ireland). I am also now very far behind on writing and posting photographs, but once I get one I should probably rectify that. But back to the photograph. I found it surprising now after having been there for a short trip to Portugal that I never went earlier. I cannot wait to go back and see more. Porto was an interesting place, and an beautiful city. It was both lovely and fascinating and lived in and bustling. I love going to cities where the city centers feels like it’s a working place and not just a historic showcase. There were tourists in Porto but far less than I would have expected for a city it’s size. And it was fabulous to finally see the sun after spending the last few weeks in England in the rain and cold! When I commented to the receptionist at the hotel on how beautiful the weather was she commented that today was terrible because “There are clouds in the sky”. Clearly when the weather is lovely often it skews you thresholds on bad and good perhaps.

I think all the discussions about the bad weather in Scotland may be just a lie. I’ve been there twice now and have had nothing but great weather during my times. Maybe I’ve just been lucky perhaps. We made a rather random trip up to Skye for a weekend just to see what is there. On the way to the lighthouse out there (down a rather interesting one lane (2 way) road. It was nice to get out see the beautiful rugged coastline of this amazingly large and interesting island. I really do hope to get back as my time exploring there was ever so short.

I have a ton to write about lately. Working, traveling, eating, it is hard business and makes it difficult to find time to get online these days. It makes me constantly behind on actually writing things up these days. I got to spend a few days in Zermatt for some skiing in mid April, and everyone was worried how the weather would be. Waking up in the morning to hear the booms from the controlled avalanches made me realize that winter had not yet finished in this part of the world. It was amazing to be here in Switzerland enjoying the snow and skiing when back at home the weather had since moved far beyond winter cold and snow. It was early in the morning as we made our way to the gondola and saw this man pulling these horses through the streets. The lack of gas vehicles in town added greatly to the ambiance and enjoyment of this small Swiss town in the valley.

I had every intention of writing more this week. It was a strange week, being away, not really able to have my mind on personal things and then the days just evaporated and I found myself on Friday again. But honestly for adventurous as it sounded of a week I took no photos so I really strangely have nothing new of note to share either. I have a few adventures coming up so hopefully there will be a lot to post about in the near future unless I manage to lose track of that time as well. I wanted to share a photo of a place I really haven’t posted about yet which happens to be lake bled. Such a gorgeous little place in the heart of Slovenia, a country that look so different than most other former Yugoslavia republics that I had visited. The town was very small but large mountains ringed the area, and in the middle of the lake was a small island with a picturesque church on it’s center. It was as if this place was simply dreamed up. It is amazing how many of these small countries have so much to offer yet were so very unknown to myself (and to many of my friends who I talked about going there to). These days it is difficult to find such a beautiful place that still manages to keep a lot of it’s charm and calm peacefulness. While there were tourists in the town, there were far less than what I would imagined there would be.

I hate packing. I always imagined I would be better at it after years of traveling, after dozens of trips to different parts of the world. But nope, somehow I still really suck at packing. I don’t understand why. For some reason I just abhor it, put it off to the last minute, struggle to figure out what exactly I need. It seems as if every time I pack it was the first time I ever did it. So do yourself a favor and never ask me for any packing advice ;- ) I figured this photo was a good choice for this week as this is why I’m in the middle of packing. <del>Can you figure out where it is?</del> (Cambridge, England) It will be good to get away for a while I suppose, I have a few locations planned during my time away so I’m really excited for all of it! Now if I could only get all this packing done…

I love photography, I just wish I was better at it! But it is a hobby thankfully and not a profession for me, but honestly that doesn’t mean I don’t want to get better. I’m always working to try to improve my photography, and I would love to try to help people improve theirs’ if I possibly can as well. Usually a lot of the advice out there is about how to take better photographs, but there is so much you can do to improve your photography without physically taking a picture. So I tried to think of the things that have helped me improve the photos I have taken over the years.

Find other photographers you admire

One of the things I love about the internet is how much amazing photography there is out there, how many wonderful photographers are sharing their work on so many sites, blogs, social networking, etc. From flickr.com, 500px, and various blogs it is easy to go out there and just find amazing work that other people are doing. It is a fantastic way to get inspiration, understand how other people look at things, find subjects, find ideas. Art is not created in a bubble, all artists get inspiration from others, from the world, from cultures and civilizations that came before them. I find plenty of inspiration in photographs taken by many artists, and with the internet this process is made even easier. Don’t look to simply copy what others are doing, but use ideas you find to improve your work. Those photographers got inspiration and started where you are today and over time started to develop their own style. I know myself I have a long way to go, but really without having something to compare yourself against how do you know?

Examine your own work

Have you ever really taken a look at your own work? I mean really…? Even the bad ones? This is something I find myself having trouble with often, it is very hard to critique my own work sometimes. Usually I just cringe about how bad it is! Ok I don’t think it is all bad, but often I find fault in it more than I find things going right. Being negative about your work is not always good, but being able to examine your own work is important. I try to look through the photos from a previous shoot. Find which photos I like and which I wish I could do over? Then ask I ask myself why… I see if I can find two photos, preferably of the same subject. Why does one of the photos work and the other doesn’t? Examine where my eye focuses on in the photograph. Does my eye move through the photo? (I often have trouble with this, since when examining this I sometimes seem to force my eye to move unnaturally). Is there areas that are too bright, too dark? Is there anything distracting? How does it make you feel? It is important to ask yourself questions and figure out what you like about your own work. Figure out which ones failed technically, which compositions could be better, etc. I try to really look at the failures too, even if I cringe. You often learn more from what you did wrong than what you did right. I try think about how I would have done things different if I could have or possibly the next time I find myself in a similar position.

A little help from my friends…

Take a bunch of your photos, the ones you really like and start asking others for their advice too. I try to find some friends who’s advice I trust, some who are photographers and possible some who are not as well. It is interesting to see how people who are not into photography perceive your work too. Now I don’t simply just ask them “Hey do you like this?”, or “Hey what do you think of these photos?” More often than not they are going to say yeah it’s great, wonderful, fantastic. While this might make me feel better it does absolutely nothing to improve my photographs. If it was all great you would have nowhere to go. Instead I ask them to rank the photographs from lowest to highest. Ask them which they like best, etc. I ask them why? What makes them like this particular photo over another? Is it the subject? Is it a particular angle or creative way I did the photograph? Many of the non-photographers friends will often overlook and disregard technical aspects of the photos and they usually have insights that I never anticipated. Some of the best photos are not perfect technically but emotionally they end up connecting with people more.

Get a great support system

This might be a bit on the line since it does require a camera in the end, but I think it is important enough to include. It was a bit of a long road for me to become a convert to a good tripod under my camera. I often whine about carrying a tripod, but more so I end up annoyed about the photos I cannot get for not having it. Like many people I went through all the alternative options. I tried to get better and more disciplined in my shooting, said I needed better quality glass, image stabilizing, etc. Eventually you just realize that in the end if you want to get sharp photographs you need to get a tripod. Sure there are many circumstances when sure you need to handhold a camera, but there are often times (and many circumstances) where to get the shot you want a tripod is necessary. If you want to get good night shots, or do long exposures you are going to need a tripod. Learn from my mistakes too and don’t get the cheapest system out there. Get one that is more than adequate for the weight you are planning to carry. And don’t skimp either. You cannot confidently expect a $20 tripod to hold up a $2000 camera, so make sure the tripod is of good quality. If you can afford it (and save yourself the iterative purchasing) buy a nice professional tripod and ball-head. In the end the lower end ones you will find will work ok for most circumstances and then they will slip when the weight gets a bit higher, or won’t quite lock down as well as you hope. I’ve even had one fail on me and then I was there in a foreign country trying to find an Allen wrench to at least get it work at all for the remainder of my trip. Oh and get a tripod you are willing to carry, if it means paying more for the fancy carbon fiber or more compact one, then do it. Nothing worse then buying something and never carrying it. If you have to cut costs anywhere, I would recommend spending more on the ball-head and maybe saving a bit on the legs. The heads tend to have more things that can fail and a high quality one will hold up significantly longer and you will spend much more time fiddling with the head than with the legs in the end.

Improve your photo editing…

“Did you Photoshop that photo?” I get asked this so often, that it’s often hard to understand exactly what that means anymore. Does it mean did I make modifications to the photograph, or did I go and modify the photo so much that it doesn’t even represent the original anymore? If it is the former than yes, I did make changes to the photograph. I wish I was good enough to get that “photoshopped” look! It’s almost funny sometimes how it becomes such a badge of honor to not make changes to your photograph. Oh this was “right out of the camera”! Or people who refuse to use Photoshop (or other editors) because they don’t want to mar their work. I know I used to say this all the time before I actually started practicing and learning photo editing techniques.

It’s like those people who don’t want to lift weights because they don’t want to get huge muscles. I hate to break it to you before there is a huge gap between lifting and getting huge, just like their a big gap between editing photographs and “Photoshopping” them. And it doesn’t matter what software you use, Photoshop, Lightroom, Picasa, iPhoto, gimp, etc., most photographs probably can do with some editing. My favorite tends to be Lightroom personally, but I’ve used many editors over the years. Sometimes even just simple picking the “auto” can make a huge difference to the photo that it would be silly not to try to make it your best. Do you shoot in RAW? You certainly need to do some editing on your photos, sharpening, etc. to make your photos their best. If you shoot in JPEG you are basically just leaving it to the camera software programmers to come up with their best opinion on how your photos should look.

All digital photos have been processed, whether it’s in camera or on your computer later.

It’s just a matter of deciding who will do a better job, you or the committee of folks who decided on how the camera’s algorithm would work. Don’t shy away from all modifications, and being able to do some editing will certainly make your photographs better. I used to think it was cheating, but then realized even in the old days there was a lot of work that was done in the dark rooms too. I might not be cutting out cardboard pieces to do dodging and burning, but the end result is similar. There is always going to be stuff done in camera and other stuff done in post processing. Learn to do some tweaking, fix the levels, learn to dodge and burn. Even sometimes simply understanding what to crop in a photo will make a huge difference in how the photo looks. The more you practice the faster you’ll be able to do it and the better they will end up looking in the end. I may not want the “photoshop” look myself in my photos, but I can’t fault others who do. I think it just matters in the end who your expected audience is and where your feel that line is.

RTFM: Read the freaking manual

Yes that sizable paperweight that is translated into 85 different languages and makes your camera box 4 times larger than it probably needs to be. There is actually some useful stuff in it! I know, since I so often ignore the manuals and just figure I know it all or will learn it on my own. You know how stupid I felt when I didn’t realize my camera could auto-bracket? Pretty darn stupid yeah…and now I find myself using it all the time. Do you know how to set exposure compensation, adjust flash compensation, exposure lock, etc. on your camera? Maybe, but I’m sure there are probably dozens of other functions that would make either your life easier when photographing or allow you to do things you didn’t know where possible. You don’t necessarily have to read it from cover to cover, but I know I try to skim through it occasionally to look for things that would be useful or I didn’t try before. Heck I can’t put together an Ikea chair without a manual and modern digital cameras as more complicated (or at least as complicated).

So what you? What kind of things do you do outside of physically taking a picture to improve your photography?

One of my favorite times of the year is spring time, when after the cold winter things start to bloom again. I first truly experienced the beauty of the cherry blossoms several years ago in Japan on one of my trips through there and really started to characterize spring around them. They are so beautiful, yet so fragile, so vibrant, yet live for such a short time. I once read somewhere that the bloom of the cherry blossom is a metaphor for the ephemeral nature of life. In Japan even in places of constant motion like Tokyo, people take out time to go and view and enjoy the blossoms. There is a lot of respect and awe for such transient beauty. This was my first year really experiencing them here in Washington DC, as often I would just barely miss their peak. They were absolutely stunning when in full bloom and then on another morning after a bit of chill, rain, and wind, they lay scattered like snowflakes across the lawns and pavement. Here’s to a great 100 years of cherry blossoms in Washington DC, and to hundreds more to come…

Mr. Speaker, Vice President, members of the blog community, distinguished readers, and fellow photographers.

It’s spring time and that means Cherry Blossoms here in DC and many parts of the world and that means it is time for flowers. Nothing seems to light up DC more than the annual blooming of the cherry trees. I’ve been getting a lot of questions regarding the blossoms here in DC, etc. So I wanted to share some of the info and photos of the blossoms here in Washington DC over the last week. Well at least during the times I happened to be there checking them out. This year is also a particularly special year as it is the 100th anniversary of the cherry blossoms here in Washington DC as a gift from the nation of Japan.

Photo from the weekend of March 17 – 18

As you can see from below, the state of the blossoms this weekend. There was quite a bit of rain lately and while some of the flowers are still hanging on, many of the flowers have lost their petals and started withering away, waiting to return again for the spring of next year.

Photo from Saturday March 24

It was a lot quieter on the tidal basin area yesterday than it has been as of late. But there were still several brave souls out there trying to enjoy the blossoms while they could.

Saturday March 24

Even as little as a day makes a big difference. This photo was taken on Friday Morning, before the weekend rains came.

Friday March 23

And here are some of the blossoms after the rains.

Both photos from – Saturday March 24

You can see that the flowers definitely sustained a lot of damage recently, which is highly unfortunate.

I tried to take the next two photos from roughly the same location but a week apart. Granted the photos were taken with different cameras but they were taken at roughly similar times of day.

The quality difference sort of makes me think of those infomercials like the before and after photos. Although you can get an idea of the difference in blossom condition between the photos.

I was surprised that even Friday morning that the blossoms were still in pretty good shape even after the rains during the week.

It is almost heart breaking seeing them on Saturday and now with more rains expected today (it’s overcast but it’s not raining at the immediate moment), I hope the remaining flowers last a bit longer still.

The area around the Washington Monument looks particularly ragged.

From last weekend, the flowers were just starting to get to full bloom.

If you are still planning a visit to Washington DC during this time of year, don’t despair. There are still plenty of activities going on during this time. There are still some cherry blossoms left and some of the trees have survived decently over the weather of the last few days. There is also the Cherry Blossom parade, fireworks, and tons of events from now until April 27th when the cherry blossom festival officially ends. Check out http://www.nationalcherryblossomfestival.org for more activities occurring in the DC metro Area.
