Ex-Sen. Kerrey to run for his former Nebraska seat

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Former Sen. Bob Kerrey is reversing course and says he'll seek the Democratic nomination for the Nebraska seat he once held.

Kerrey's announcement Wednesday comes just weeks after he publicly rejected a run to replace retiring Democratic Sen. Ben Nelson. It's also just one day before Nebraska's candidate filing deadline.

The 1992 presidential candidate and former Nebraska governor previously said not running was in his family's best interest.

Kerrey's announcement gives new hope to national Democrats desperate to stop Republicans from netting four Senate seats this fall and regaining control of the chamber.

But it's also sure to create state party friction. Fellow Democrat Chuck Hassebrook stepped into the race after Kerrey bowed out and gave up a University of Nebraska regent seat he's held for nearly 18 years.

Monkees singer dead at 66

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — The singer who led the 1960s group The Monkees has died.

A spokeswoman says Davy Jones died of a massive heart attack today in Florida. He was 66.

The Monkees were a pop group created for a TV comedy show, and gained a huge following after the group was created in 1965, with hits including "Daydream Believer."

Jones told AP Radio in 1992 that he was proud of how the Monkees TV series brought families together at a time when kids were rebelling against their parents. He called the show "a family sedative."

About this project

Occuprint is a volunteer-run collaborative project that curates, collects, prints and distributes posters and graphics produced by and for the global Occupy movement. In the Fall, Occuprint launched with an all-poster newspaper, published in collaboration with the Occupied Wall Street Journal. Since then, we’ve been sending the paper across the globe as a freely distributed tool to keep the #occupy movement as visible as possible, as beautiful as possible, and in as many places as possible.
The response has been overwhelming. Since the newspaper was released, we’ve received hundreds of poster submissions from all over the world—many of which we’ve archived on our website:
www.occuprint.org.
Now, we want to start getting these images out beyond the internet: into the streets and into the homes, offices, and schools of #occupy supporters worldwide.
We’re raising money for two reasons:
1. So we can print posters—tens of thousands of posters—and start distributing them anywhere there are #occupy supporters.
2. So we can print a limited edition portfolio of screen printed images, which will ultimately live in the permanent collections of museums, libraries, and other arts institutions.

A new law against corporate tax dodging will be announced in George Osborne 's budget next month in the chancellor's latest effort to crack down on corporate tax avoidance after the Treasury shut down two schemes this week that Barclays used to avoid at least £500m of tax.

Ministers are understood to have hardened their attitude over a new so-called "generalised anti-avoidance rule" after the government took the extremely unusual retrospective action to close down the two "highly abusive schemes".

Plenty of people had reason to ridicule the Occupy protesters at St Paul's, and it wasn't difficult to do. They lent a chaotic look to a great landmark, preferred chaotic procedures to any hint of hierarchy, and took a number of chaotic characters under their wing. The home secretary cited demonstrators' cappuccino-slurping as proof of hypocrisy, while London's mayor expanded Britain's word power by demanding that the "bivouacked crusties" be dispersed.

For four and a half long months, however, the camp remained in place – through the bleak midwinter and beyond, until the bailiffs and police finally turned up in force in the small hours of Tuesday. During their time, the protesters have had more success than they can ever have expected in constructing, well, a big tent. The cathedral was forced into serious soul-searching from which much Christian sympathy emerged, the local Tory MP endorsed Occupy's agenda if not its methods, and party leaders are now falling over each other in their rush to denounce crony capitalism. Where turn-of-the-millennium Stop the City protests were the preserve of socialist students, opinion polls this time have found middle Britain more inclined to applaud Occupy's idealism than to dismiss it as naive. The self-styled grown-ups who dash out to decry any demonstration that creates inconvenience (and what demo doesn't?) have found that one particular charge wouldn't stick – namely, Occupy's failure to come up with answers. The difficulty was less that the charge was awry, although some Occupiers did sketch out first thoughts on a new political economy in the FT. No, the real difficulty is that – amid the crisis – it is perfectly clear that the establishment is itself bereft of solutions.

Take yesterday's breathtaking news about Barclays' complex wheezes toavoid £500m in tax – which feature a rebate in respect of tax that has never been paid. The same politicians who say we cannot afford disability benefits and children's centres approach tax with kid gloves. Here is a public company that has been utterly reliant on all manner of public guarantees, going to ingenious lengths to avoid its public responsibilities. Even as the government announced that it would close the loophole, the first instinct was to spare the bank's shame by refusing to name it, out of deference to a supposedly hallowed principle of taxpayer confidentiality – a doctrine that developed purely to protect individuals, but which is now misapplied to spare corporate blushes. Proper regulation to prevent such schemes was shunned in favour of a gentlemen's agreement with the banks that they would follow the spirit as well as the letter of tax law.
