This Friday, July 31st the Buffalo & Erie County Historical Society will be having their Party on the Portico from 5- 8 pm. This week's musical guest will be Wendell Rivera's Latin Jazz Ensemble. Admission to the event is $15 ($5 for members). The series runs rain or shine and is limited to guests ages 21 and over. Admission includes three drink tickets. Welcome to the newest branch of Buffalo T-shirts. We're calling it Buffalo Reshirts. Fashioned after our friend over at Teecycle.org, we're literally giving the shirts off our backs to help those in need. These are recycled, previously loved BUFFALO THEMED t-shirts that we've pulled from the brink of the Niagara Falls landfill. That means the hard work of breakin' 'em is all done for you! For sale are individual t-shirts that we find throughout the city and offer up for $10 bucks a piece (with free shipping). 100% of all profit from the sale of these recycled t-shirts goes to Friends of the Ni ght People of Buffalo, NY. Their mission is to heighten public understanding of homelessness and poverty issues...to provide basic and essential support services.So get a piece of Buffalo history and heritage while making a contribution to help those in our city get back on their feet. I'll be teaming up with another local t-shirt designer and offering their shirts on my site in the very near future. They will be offering mine on their site as well. I'm very excited about the ability to cross-promote with some talented designers and work together. The more the merrier and it all helps spread the word about Buffalo.
I'll keep you posted--Im also planning to add another shirt or two of my own before summer as well. Things are looking up!

Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo." is a grammatically correct sentence used as an example of how homonyms and homophones can be used to create complicated constructs. It has been discussed in literature since 1972 when the sentence was used by William J. Rapaport, an associate professor at the University at Buffalo.^[1] It was posted to Linguist List by Rapaport in 1992.^[2] It was also featured in Steven Pinker's 1994 book The Language Instinct.

Sentence construction

The sentence is unpunctuated and uses three different readings of the word "buffalo". In order of their first use, these are

a. the city of Buffalo, New York (or any other place named "Buffalo"), which is used as an adjective in the sentence and is followed by the animal;
n. the noun buffalo, an animal, in the plural (equivalent to "buffaloes" or "buffalos"), in order to avoid articles;
v. the verb "buffalo" meaning to bully, confuse, deceive, or intimidate.

Marking each "buffalo" with its use as shown above gives

Buffalo^a buffaloⁿ Buffalo^a buffaloⁿ buffalo^v buffalo^v Buffalo^a buffaloⁿ.

Thus, the sentence when parsed reads as a description of the pecking order in the social hierarchy of buffaloes living in Buffalo:

[Those] (Buffalo buffalo) [whom] (Buffalo buffalo buffalo) buffalo (Buffalo buffalo).

[Those] buffalo(es) from Buffalo [that are intimidated by] buffalo(es) from Buffalo intimidate buffalo(es) from Buffalo.

Bison from Buffalo, New York, who are intimidated by other bison in their community also happen to intimidate other bison in their community.

THE buffalo FROM Buffalo WHO ARE buffaloed BY buffalo FROM Buffalo ALSO buffalo THE buffalo FROM Buffalo.

"Buffalo buffalo (subject) [which the] Buffalo buffalo (Indirect object) buffalo [verb] buffalo [another verb] Buffalo buffalo [Direct Object]. [Noun], (which the) [Noun verb] [verb] [noun].

It may be revealing to read the sentence replacing all instances of the animal buffalo with "people" and the verb buffalo with "intimidate". The sentence then reads

"Buffalo people [whom] Buffalo people intimidate [also happen to] intimidate Buffalo people."

Preserving the meaning more closely, substituting the synonym "bison" for "buffalo" (animal), "bully" for "buffalo" (verb) and leaving "Buffalo" to mean the city, yields

'Buffalo bison Buffalo bison bully bully Buffalo bison', or:

'Buffalo bison whom other Buffalo bison bully themselves bully Buffalo bison'.

To further understand the structure of the sentence, one can replace "Buffalo buffalo" with any number of noun phrases. Rather than referring to "Buffalo buffalo" intimidating other "Buffalo buffalo", one can use noun phrases like "Alley cats", "Junkyard dogs", and "Sewer rats". The sentence then reads

"Alley cats [whom] Junkyard dogs intimidate [also happen to] intimidate Sewer rats."

This has the same sentence structure as 'Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo'.

Ambiguity

If the capitalization is ignored, the sentence can be read another way:

Buffalo^c buffalo^a buffalo^v Buffalo^c buffalo^a Buffalo^c buffalo^a buffalo^v.

That is, bison from Buffalo intimidate (other) bison from Buffalo that are intimidated by bison from Buffalo.

New "Irish-inspired" Design

Just in time for the big St. Pat celebrations we're coming out with a couple new t-shirt designs. The first is the winner of our voting booth. This design captured 51% of the vote. Modeled after the first tavern in Buffalo, NY, Palmer's Inn Canalside Pub, this t-shirt is sure to inspire. Of course we've taken creative liberty with this one, although there are a few truths:

1) Palmer's Inn was arguably the first bar in Buffalo, established around 1798.

2) Proprietor John Palmer was one of 3 or 4 people on the Buffalo tax rolls of 1800.

2) You most likely could've gotten drunk for a penny back then.

3) Depending on what piss you were drinking and from where, there's a chance you'd find yourself dead purchasing a couple pennies worth.

Other than that, we made up the logo, most of the name and added the tag from some old historical accounts. "Drunk for a penny. Dead drunk for two." Who knows, maybe we'll actually open this puppy up as a real establishment some day now that the waterfront is making some progress...

"Oh, yeah, I have a blog." Its been a long while since I last posted and here why: we bought a house! And, news to me, its a hell of alot of work to get it in sea-worthy shape. Painting, replacing light fixtures, painting and painting.
Needless to say, this here blog wasnt a priority for a spell there.
On top of that, I've been crazy busy with design work. Crazy busy. I completed logo/packaging for a hockey equipment repair kit (should get a call today from the printer to pick it up!), and jammed out the 2009 Buffalo First Coupon Book (design/mechanical) the past week and a half. Above is the cover illustration/design I did for it. Plus some web design and logo design thrown in for good measure.
So...what about the shirts?
The shirts. The poor, poor shirts. Im swinging down to City Love clothing next week in hope of striking up a deal to get my shirts in their retail store AND Im ordering the blanks for the new design too. Hope to have them in by the first of the year.

Image by Getty Images via DaylifeThe past week or two, Ive noticed an increase in the amount of visitors to my site and was wondering to myself, "have I been pressing the right buttons out there that people are now responding to my marketing?" The short answer is, maybe.

The truer answer is: Probably not. So what is it?

The past few weeks as we creep closer to the Presidential Election, Ralph Nader has been spending money getting his name out to the public. One of his marketing ploys is the selling of t-shirts -- more specifically his "Buffalo T-shirts". Its an alright t-shirt: A standing Buffalo decked out in the colors of the flag with a dusting of stars. Apparently they're selling like hotcakes too. In turn, people are looking for them and most likely turning to google and yahoo to perform searches. They type in "Nader Buffalo T-shirt" and more often then not they come across one of my social networking entries/posts/profiles and - click - they stumble onto my site.
Now how to leverage this into sales is the question. Create a "Nader Buffalo T-shirt" of my own? Nah, not interested in doing that. Any ideas out there?

Is the Rocketship 7 tee from Buffalo T-shirts a metaphor for Buffalo's future? If you say so.
Actually, the idea for this shirt was formed from a childhood memory. My dad had our sailboat docked at the Marina and occasionally we'd slip up to the observation tower to fill up the gas tank prior to heading out. I always thought growing up that the tower looked like a crude spacecraft. Think Men in Black and the Worlds Fair Towers in Queens. Thats what Im talking about.
But some say its a metaphor. So, okay its a metaphor. A graphic t-shirt symbolic of Buffalo's upward swing.
