Jubliee and the X-Men or Learning from Frank Frazetta

My first love of art was really through comic books. It’s where it all really started. I’m still an avid fan and enjoy it when I get the chance or time to work on some of my favorite Marvel characters. I try to join in on as many contests and competitions online as I can. It’s a great way to network, meet people and practice your craft. Many times it’ll take you out of your comfort zone.

Last month I entered a little competition and the subject was Jubilee and the X-Men. The pencils didn’t take long and came out pretty good. Then I decided to ink them. It’s been awhile since I’ve inked anything and I’ve never really developed a style or love for it. I love tonal rendering and the usual comic work with that total black and white contrast just doesn’t light up my tool shed. That is until I discovered that Frank Frazetta thought the same thing.

To quote a master, Frazetta said, “I began to water down the ink and change the tones because I was never happy with drawings that had too much contrast. I wanted to soften that harshness that sometimes comes with black and white.”

Here’s a sample of my favorite Frazetta inked work.

Now, I’m no Frazetta but I did look at a lot of his ink work trying to study and see how he got so much life and form to his ink work. In addition to watering down the ink he loved using cross contour lines following the form and sweep of muscles to really make it look three-dimensional. He was also a master of being able to put down a line that just screams with energy. That just comes from practice, being loose and confident. It also helps if you’re Frank Frazetta. He also loves a broken line. Look at the line of the Lion’s back. It’s about 6 or 7 different lines. More of that energy I mentioned.

I tried to replicate some of these things mentioned above but at the same time bring my own style to the work. I also went a step further and threw in some grey tones in Photoshop. In any event, I’ve got a new passion for inking. Thanks, Frank.

A MAN OUT OF TIME

I remember hearing a story about Frank Frazetta about how his wife would lock him out of his own museum because she would find him reworking some of his famous paintings as they hung on the gallery wall. An artist is never satisfied with a “finished” work. Let enough time go by and he’ll find something that can be improved upon or changed in some way. I kept going back to my last piece and doing that.

After last season (where we got ousted in the first round of the playoffs) he wanted me to come up with a logo for our team. Thus, the 100lb. newborn was born.
