Inspired by the success and usability of google map two individuals from russia Alexandre Koriakine and Evgeniy Saveliev opened another mapping service called wikimapia on May 24, 2006 for internet users.Wikipedia is an online map and satellite mapping service almost similar to google maps with a very unique wiki service which allows users to add a note to the map which can be accessed and viewed by anyone online.

wikimapia is a free resourse .registration is not mandatory,wikimapia is a digital satellite mapping service which takes map service from google.just like google map you can browse through places the most charm of wikimapia is the tagging service which enables users to freely use the vast map resourse freely and tag or placemark a place marking a polygon.that means you can placemark your native home or the tree under which you first kissed your fiance.Thats a great magic of wikimapia.along with tag marking you can upload upto seven photos of the tagged place.so you can not even tag your home but also show up the world how your bedroom looks like.great way to show off....the latest addition is you tube videos to the taged place.so if you like you can show how you fight with your spouse in the bedroom too as a popular youtube video.

Location tagging is fully multi-lingual,Currently a total of 101 languages are supported, and 100% of the interface has been translated into 56 languages.but this feature is available only to registered Wikipedia users.

Wikimapia also allows users to add so-called "linear features", meaning roads, railroads, ferry lines, and rivers. The interface allows users to specify the size of the road (major highway, side street, dirt road, etc.), to indicate one-way streets, and to provide a brief description. It also allows users to describe intersections and tunnels.

since users only contribute the greatest extend in enhancing the service,
Users can vote in favor of or against other users' contributions, thereby allowing users to rise in status among the community. There also is a user statistics and ranking board which automatically ranks users based on their contributions. However, vote tallies and user statistics have no impact on a user's user-level.so it also poses fraud to data and faulty map tagging.

WikiMapia growth has been phenomenally rapid. This rapid growth brought problems of its own,Urban areas became covered with thousands of overlapping rectangles marking the positions of private residences, but there was no provision in the WikiMapia interface for distinguishing those residences from places of public interest. Recently,although category browsing has been introduced, allowing users to select what category or categories of features they want displayed.but this is not going to help much because fraud or wrong markings or intentional errorsum map tagging.so the next big question is who is going to filter those clutter and errors.

bhuvan sequrity analysed

peoples have started to think bhuvan would endanger our country's security by exposing maps in detail and places in detail resolution but the fact is not so.all the places and map data has been thoroughly scrutinized and then uploaded to maximize security.

Bhuvan, which uses high-resolution images, will comply with India’s remote sensing data policy, which does not allow online mapping services to show sensitive locations such as military and nuclear installations. High-resolution images are those that show locations of 1 sq. m or less on earth.although bhuvan uses upto 6 mtrs of close resolution most military and sensitive places has been censored. unlike other satellite map services which allow anyone to check military places and even missile installations.most of the country's has not authorized google to use imagery on sensitive places and google has the policy to comply that.but few places are still there in certain country's to check certain military arsenals in open space.

indian military space has been excluded from the map of bhuvan so theres no point in thinking our military privacy is on threat from bhuvan because it provides high resolution satellite map data.

Unlike Google Earth, the Bhuvan application will not be downloadable and will not allow users to host content in the near future. that means any spy agency or people cant tag any military space even if they find something also to tag and offer exposing that place globally.

if any militant organization wants to find and misuse information they can do it in many other means. they will not wait for a 10 mts resolution map data provided by bhuvan.they can buy it from many sources.

its better we forget the security issues which has been well handled by ISRO.

the comparison is obvious as we see the launch of bhuvan portal.

here is the compare list as of today

1)Google Earth Zooms max upto 200 Mts. while Bhuvan's 5.8 mts.

2)Google - provides Single layer information. Bhuvan's multi layer.

3) Google: Image upgrade rate: Slow read 4years. Bhuvan: Frequent read 1-3 years.

4)google earth is fast and complete :bhuvan is not so fast and partially complete (only india in detail)in cases mapping of whole earth.

5)google is full of user generated spams,one can easily get fooled seeing India named and tagged next to Indiana.users and spammers can misuse the location by tagging a wrong name or wrong place in google maps.

bhuvan is completely edited and compiled by humans and most of all free from public generated errors since it doesn't allow anonymous to name or rename a place or use tag

6)possibly one best thumbs up to googlemap is google works on cross browser but bhuvan being in beta stage only works on internet explorer 5.5 or higher version.

i think the most impressive update is bhuvan's capability to show images clear and from a aerial distance of 5.8mts.that's amazing.neither google or wikimapia is providing such close resolution.

multi layer means bhuvan can see things under the soil layer and this can be used to unearth minerals,but still we are not sure if this facility would be helpful for common peoples or would be provided or not.

one down of bhuvan is its very network hungry at least Network Speed: 768 Kbits/sec is expected to navigate properly, but alas in india we cant expect it everywhere when broadband speed beyond 256 kbps is confined mainly in urban areas.

Bhuvan ChandraBhumi

The next version of Bhuvan is expected to be called Bhuvan ChandraBhumi, which will feature both earth and moon in resolution upto 347 m maximum in near side and 432 m far side which is taken by Chandrayaan. The actual zoom level of the moon was set to 150 m but due to lack of system power and steering problems caused it to be reduced. It is developed by TCS, Infosys, Wipro and ISRO along with the partnership of Satyam Computers and Cognizant Technology Solutions. All leading Indian computer technology companies have participated in this venture with TCS being the main partner. This version is expected to be launched on early 2011 and be operational by the end of 2009 or early 2010. Nearly 90% of moon surface is captured by Chandrayaan with best qualtiy of imaging.

this software will be a freeware and it needs a license for the usage whether to check they are Indian or not to stop unauthorized access and usage.

first let me tell you clearly that isro has not taken much care to bulid the primary viewing site before launch which was http://bhuvan.nrsc.gov.in/ and was down due to web traffic for almost 36 hours, the new site is working and providing much information on bhuvan operation till the time of writing, which is http://bhuvan2.nrsc.gov.in/

now afrer 2 days both sites are working seamlessly with the same content.they are now like mirror sites.

users have to register(mandatory) through the site before downloading the software plugin to access maps.also user needs to have direct x9 or higher (install).also u need to have microsoft.net (install)

1)user have to download the above software close to 10 mb in size and install it in order to view map.

2)once u download and install, go to bhuvan site and log in.a new window will open up with the google earth like interface.

this software piece is called (TerraExplorer Viewer version 5.1.2.f15)actually a 3d mapping software and can be integrated for 3d mapping of terrain and has been developed by a us company called Skyline Software Systems .this software has been used as a platform to view bhuvan satellite imagery.

what ISRO says about bhuvan ?

The ISRO, based in Bangalore, said, “Bhuvan will use a network of satellites to create a high-resolution, bird’s eye-view of India – and later, possibly, the rest of the world – that will be accessible at no cost online and will compete with Google Earth. If a pilot version passes muster, Bhuvan will be fully operational by the spring of 2009. There are also plans to incorporate a global positioning system (GPS) into the online tool.”

Google Earth shows details upto 200 meters distance and Wikimapia upto 50 meters, Bhuvan will show images upto 10 meters.this means u can even point a moving vehicle in the ground quite easily.although the mapping resolution varies but u can assume its resolution most of the time offering at an average of 5.8 meter which means you are looking at the logo of your dish antenna as it would look like to be seen from the balcony of a 4 story building.

The latest version Bhuvan will be able to take more closer pictures of the Indian Subcontinent as compared to the Google Earth. The new ISRO Bhuvan will also feature a multi layer information mapping while the present Google Earth features a single layer information mapping system. Apart from that, Bhuvan will also update map information every year contrary to the Google Earth which updates its map information every 4 years.

With the unveiling of India's first geo map satellite mapping system, 'Bhuvan' by Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). india is reaching a new platform on space and mapping in world scenario.bhuvan is a browser based software tool that lets the user view rotate, map, zoom into any country any location map like google earth.this lets u find and view your private car in the lane as the same mapping done by google maps but more closer.not only you can view it can also can be used for measuring, drawing, saving, printing and visualizing thematic information.the Bhuvan project demonstrates the country’s expertise in both information and space technology.

the map data provided by bhuvan is not very current but almost 1-3 years old map. ISRO took pictures from seven remote sensing satellites, including Cartosat-1 and Cartosat-2; various sensors on board of IRS (Indian Remote Sensing) satellites transposes map pictures on a virtual3-D globe what we see in terraexplorer to combine and form detail maps.

bhuvan has been designed to behave as bandwidth friendly as it can be considering the viewers would be mostly from India,beside general map of all over the earth most emphasis has been given to India and bhuvan offers best resolutions over the Indian sub-continent presently.with this resolution u can even see a vehicle in move quite closely.

ISRO Chairman, G Madhavan added, "With Bhuvan, we will be able to produce very local information which will be specific to only our own country. This information available from this mapping system will be useful in addressing very local problems like floods, famines, infrastructure development, education and much more."

“Bhuvan is one project where high technology will benefit common people. In the current economic slowdown, if someone needs to analyze land for a project, the platform could be used and at no cost,” said Nag, a former surveyor general of India.
