Anderson Cooper Confirms He's Gay

Anderson Cooper has, at long last, publicly said he is gay.

Cooper made the announcement in an email to writer Andrew Sullivan.

"The fact is, I'm gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud," he wrote.

Cooper's sexuality has long been the subject of ample media speculation, but he has never publicly confirmed it.

“I just don’t talk about my personal life," he told New York magazine in 2005. "...The whole thing about being a reporter is that you’re supposed to be an observer and to be able to adapt with any group you’re in, and I don’t want to do anything that threatens that.”

On Monday, though, Cooper reversed course:

"I have always been very open and honest about this part of my life with my friends, my family, and my colleagues. In a perfect world, I don't think it's anyone else's business, but I do think there is value in standing up and being counted. I’m not an activist, but I am a human being and I don't give that up by being a journalist."

Cooper also said that he ultimately decided that he was doing more harm than good by not speaking up:

"It’s become clear to me that by remaining silent on certain aspects of my personal life for so long, I have given some the mistaken impression that I am trying to hide something - something that makes me uncomfortable, ashamed or even afraid. This is distressing because it is simply not true. I’ve also been reminded recently that while as a society we are moving toward greater inclusion and equality for all people, the tide of history only advances when people make themselves fully visible."

Previously, the 45-year-old CNN anchor and daytime talk show host has been romantically linked to Benjamin Maisani, the co-owner of New York City gay bars Eastern Bloc and Bedlam.

Cooper becomes at least the sixth, though by far the most high-profile, openly gay anchor in the cable news business. He joins CNN colleagues Don Lemon and Jane Velez-Mitchell, as well as MSNBC's Thomas Roberts, Rachel Maddow and Steve Kornacki.

As Sullivan himself said in his post, Cooper is just the latest celebrity to come out in a relatively understated way. Just fifteen years ago, Ellen DeGeneres revealed she was gay in a storm of magazine covers and publicity. Now, though, stars are just as likely to quietly disclose their sexuality.

The statement prompted a flood of congratulations. Roberts, Lemon and DeGeneres all tweeted their well-wishes. So did Cooper's close friend Kelly Ripa. Gay rights group GLAAD also issued a statement.

"Even prior to coming out publically, Anderson's terrific work has raised awareness of inequalities facing LGBT people," GLAAD President Herndon Graddick said. "I'm proud to call him my friend. He's a role model to millions and now will inspire countless others."

Puerto Galera Public Sex Scenes, a Normal Incident?

Photos of sexual acts conducted publicly on White Beach, Puerto Galera, have angered officials of the popular tourist spot. However, a Bayan Patroller who took the photos of a foreigner and his Filipino partner in the early hours of April 15 insists locals shrugged off the incident as “normal.”

Puerto Galera Mayor Hubbert Dolor told ABS-CBN’s Southern Tagalog news bureau that police teams do regular patrols of the area. “Nobody could have gotten away with it,” he insisted.

White Beach Barangay Captain Ohrie Bunquin also said it could not have happened on his turf.

"Imposible to kasi sa dami ng taong iyan may magsusumbong sa amin noon,” Ohrie said. (Impossible because with so many people there, someone would have complained.) He said members of the tanod or local village safety volunteers do regular rounds and would have trained their flashlights on any one engaged in public sex.

But the Bayan Patroller, a student of a Manila university, said people just shrugged off the incident.

“Wala silang violent reaction,” said the Bayan Patroller who sought anonymity. In an interview with Bayan Mo iPatrol Mo, she said: “Normal lang sa kanila. Dumadaan, nakakitang ay may ginagawa sila: ‘okay, ay ganito lang pala dito’. Yung iba, nanonood lang sila, wala lang, nagtatawanan sila.”

(There was no violent reaction. It seemed normal for them. People would pass by, see it and remark, ‘okay, this happens here.’ Others just watched and laughed.)

The Bayan Patroller, who was on her first visit to Puerto Galera, said she and her friends took photos, thinking it would prompt the couple to move.

“Ay, walang effect. Hindi umalis. Mas naging wild pa sila. Alam nilang kinukunan sila.” (It had no effect on them. They did not leave. They became wilder. They knew people were taking photographs.)

The Bayan Patroller said a civilian volunteer arrived on the scene but only after the couple had left. She claimed local folk told her such scenes were “normal, kasi foreigner, liberated sila.” (It’s normal because they’re foreigners and they’re liberated.)

Tattoo artist Henry John Golez told the ABS-CBN regional news team that he has heard reports of but never personally witnessed such stunts. Bartender Shandy Alcarazen said he had no comment, “kasi personal life naman niya yun.” (It’s personal.)

Local officials have pledged to investigate the report.

Gay Couple Can Now Produce a Child Through IVF

A gay couple has succeeded for the first time in Brazil in having a child through in vitro fertilization, the baby's two fathers announced.

Baby girl, Maria Teresa, was born January 29 in the northeastern Brazilian state of Pernambuco, and her birth certificate lists both men as her parents.

Mailton Alves, 35, and Wilson Albuquerque, 40, told television channel O Globo that they decided they wanted to have a child after being together for 15 years. They were married in 2011 in ceremony recognized under Brazilian law.

The couple's right to have a child was upheld by a decision of Brazil's Federal Council of Medicine, which authorized the artificial fertilization with sperm donations from either partner.

Until then, authorizations for artificial fertilization were granted only to women who were married or in stable relationships.

Doctors used an anonymous egg donor and sperm from Alves. The fertilized egg was implanted into the womb of his cousin.

"It's an important precedent for people like us who have spent 15 years together and who managed to realize their dreams to have a child, a family," Alves said.

Clicerio Bezerra, a family court judge in the Pernambuco capital of Recife, has legally recognized the paternity of the couple's child.

"There are cases of registration of double paternity by adoption," the judge told a local newspaper. "This case is the only one in which two men have registered a baby as a legitimate child, as far as I know."

If it "is permitted that (same sex couples) constitute a family through marriage, why not allow that family to be completed with a child," the judge said. The couple said they plan to have another baby next year.
