More specifically, Bisexual Awareness week is the 16-23 of September, and we can take the time to celebrate bisexual identity but also inform ourselves about Bisexual mental health. “Bisexual people have consistently been found to have poorer mental health than their gay and lesbian counterparts.” Statistics by Australian Family Physician. Luckily, March is Bisexual Health Awareness Month which is a huge help in spreading awareness on this topic. Below will be statistics on Bisexual health, how to spread awareness, and where to get help.

Bisexual Mental Health Statistics

People whose sexual orientation is Bisexual can encounter prejudice; whether that’s from society or, sadly, in their very home, this can result in poor mental health like anxiety, depression, and so forth. Due to statistics by American Psychiatric Association, the number of days depressed is 11 rather than Gay, Lesbian, or Heterosexual, which are seven and nine. The number of days of anxiety is six, still more than their Gay, Lesbian, and Heterosexual counterparts. The American Psychiatric Association also determines that lifetime rates of mood/anxiety disorders are higher among bisexual-identified women, more specifically, 58.7 percent for mood disorders, 57.8 percent for anxiety disorders compared with lesbians who are 44.4 percent for mood disorders, 40.8 percent for anxiety disorders, and heterosexual women 30.5% for mood disorders, 31.3 percent for anxiety disorders.

“Bisexual people have consistently been found to have poorer mental health than their gay and lesbian counterparts.”

Discrimination and Prejudice

Individuals at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, conducted a study with 445 bisexual individuals to respond to a questionnaire about past experiences with identity denial and concluded that “bisexual individuals who experience identity denial are more likely to believe that society endorses negative stereotypes about them, such as the belief that bisexuality is not a real sexual orientation and that bisexuals are heterosexual, gay or lesbian.” This contributes significantly to the importance of coming out and due to data from Pew Research Center, bisexuals are less likely than gay men and lesbians to say that their sexual orientation is an essential part of who they are. Only 20 percent of bisexuals say being bisexual is extremely important to their overall identity, and 53 percent say it is not at all important.

In a study by MAP on employment discrimination experiences of bisexual people, “Nearly two-thirds of respondents reported experiencing some form of harassment or discrimination at work, including being fired, being sexually harassed, or hearing biphobic jokes at work.” They also found that “The Pew Research Center discovered that only 11 percent of bisexual respondents reported their closest co-workers know that they are bisexual, while half of gay men and lesbians say that their co-workers know their sexual orientation.”

Suicidal rates

The rates for suicide are high in bisexual individuals and higher than gay, lesbian, and heterosexuals by 3 percent and 5.1 percent. American Psychiatric Association explains that considered attempting suicide is 7.4 percent for bisexuals while gay and lesbian is 4.4 percent and for heterosexuals is 2.3 percent. They further explain by saying that Bisexual women report worse mental health and suicidality than lesbians and heterosexual women. “In comparison with heterosexual and lesbian women, bisexual women are more likely to report feeling overwhelmingly anxiety, exhaustion, and hopelessness. Furthermore, they are almost 21 times more likely to have considered prior-year suicide than heterosexual women.” National LGBTQ Task Force states that 45%of bisexual women thought about or attempted suicide. In contrast, bisexual men are 35 percent, lesbians 30 percent, gay men 25 percent, and considerably lower rates for heterosexual women and men.

Eating Disorders and other Unhealthy substances

National LGBTQ Task Force indicated bisexual women are twice as likely to have an eating disorder than lesbians. Bisexual women report the highest alcohol use, heavy drinking, and alcohol-related problems compared to heterosexual and lesbian women. Bisexual men and women report the highest rates of smoking of all orientations. Bisexual women are more than twice as likely to have an eating disorder compared with lesbians Due to the American Psychiatric Association, which also has numerous amounts of data on unhealthy substances being consumed by bisexual individuals and how they can affect their mental health. They found that the prevalence of problem drinking patterns is 31.2 percent and 30.5 percent of illicit substance use among bisexual individuals. In a 2016 study, bisexual-identified women were found more vulnerable to heavy drinking, alcohol consumption, marijuana use, and other drugs compared to lesbians and heterosexual women.

How to spread the Awareness

Bisexual Mental health is a topic that is not talked about as much, even though bisexual individuals are deemed as the largest segment of the LGBTQ+ community. To help spread awareness, you can do the following:

Educate yourself more on this topic by reading articles, books, and other resources that provide that information.

Go to events that could be hosted in your area during Bisexual Health Awareness Month in March!

Post hashtags in different social media platforms like: #BiMentalHealth #BisexualMentalHealthAwareness #BiMentalHealthIsImportant2 and more! Bi Social Network uses #IamVisible #BiProjectBSN #BiSocialNetwork

Share what you learned on social media and provide links to resources that have the information.

Mention this topic to friends or family interested or unaware of the topic!

Where to Find Help

From the information, data, and statistics that you are now familiar with, you are aware that many bisexual individuals face discrimination and deal with mental health problems. With this, if you or someone you know someone whose sexual orientation is bisexual and is dealing with mental health problems, you can help by taking the time to listen, share any advice that might help, give comfort and create a safe space, or send links to therapy or helplines like some below:

LGBTQ+ Mental Health

Overall, the LGBTQ+ community has been found to be at a greater risk for mental health issues than their heterosexual counterparts. Moreover, recent studies on LGBTQ+ mental health show that these differences are significant. In particular, a study from Operario et al. (2015) found that sexual minority men and women were more likely than their heterosexual peers to report 15 or more poor mental health days in a 30-day time period. Furthermore, the study also found that sexual minority women reported substance abuse at significantly higher rates than heterosexual women.

In other words, it is apparent that mental health in the LGBTQ+ community must be studied. However, research must also focus on the bi+ community as well. Research on bisexual mental health matters, and has a great impact on what support is available.

Bisexual Mental Health

Even within the LGBTQ+ community, disparities exist regarding mental health. This can be seen in research on the mental health of the lesbian, gay, and bi+ communities. Studies have shown that bi+ folks are at a higher risk of experiencing mental health issues than their gay, lesbian, and heterosexual peers. Chan et al. (2020) surveyed 931 LGB individuals in Hong Kong on their identity uncertainty, sexual orientation concealment, sense of connection to the LGB community, depressive and anxiety symptoms, and mental well-being.

Ultimately researchers found that bisexuals were significantly more likely than their lesbian and gay peers to meet the criteria for probable depression or generalized anxiety disorder. Further, identifying as bisexual had a significantly positive relationship to sexual orientation concealment. Identifying as bisexual also predicted lower levels of connection to the LGB community. Therefore, those who identify as bisexual are also predicted to hide their sexual orientation and feel less connected to the LGB community than their lesbian and gay peers. This study concluded that disparities exist within the LGB community, providing evidence that bisexual folks are at risk for developing depression, anxiety, and a general sense of disconnection from the LGB community.

Conclusions

According to a recent Gallup poll, bi+ people make up 54.6% of the American LGBT adult population and 3.1% of all American adults, and these people also experience unique mental health challenges due to identifying as bi+. Therefore discussing mental health within the LGBTQIA+ community must include a conversation about bi+ folks and the struggles they face, and it must seek to eliminate the damaging stigmas and stereotypes surrounding the bi+ community. Advocacy for LGBTQ+ mental health must include the bi+ community and the unique struggles they face.

For this reason, Step Up For Mental Health® not only advocates for mental health, it also provides a network for members of the bi+ community to listen, learn, and share their experiences. We offer peer support groups and one-on-one sessions so you can have support in times of need. We also offer financial assistance for bi+ folks in need with our Bi+ BSN Project – Small Grant Program.

STATEMENT ON THE USE OF BISEXUAL PRIDE FLAG
BY BINET USA PRESIDENT, thefayth
With assistance and edits from Juba Kalamka, BiNet USA VP

As of May 2020, BiNet USA CEASES AND DESISTS OF ALL USE OF THE BISEXUAL PRIDE FLAG; using only when necessary the bisexual people of color flag, as co-created in 2019 by thefayth, Faith Cheltenham.

Further, BiNet USA denies all responsibilities of past or future claims for any bisexual pride flag use,or any use of any previous property created by former volunteers, staff and employees of BiNet USA, including the bisexual pride flag, Celebrate Bisexuality Day aka Bi Pride Day and Bisexual Awareness Week.

BiNet USA is not the bisexual community. BiNet USA has no responsibility to specific bisexual organizations or organizers unless jointly agreed upon. BiNet USA rejects any responsibility to any other bisexual organizations and organizers unless its organizers, staff and volunteers are compensated.

No member of bisexual communities may use photos, written words or messaging from BiNet USA web, digital or written materials without it’s express permission.

No member or bisexual communities may use photos, written words or messaging from thefayth, Faith Cheltenham without her express permission on behalf of bisexual communities; even previously provided.

Any license previously given from thefayth, Faith Cheltenham for “bisexual community” photos, written word or messaging is expressly revoked.

STATEMENT BY THEFAYTH ABOUT THE BISEXUAL COMMUNITY
By thefayth, BiNet USA President
With additional edits/support from Juba Kalamka, BiNet USA VP

Bisexual communities have been notified of my intent to remove my networks, support and help from those who center white supremacy or practice trans exclusionary radical feminism. Simply put, I do not believe bisexual exclusionary communities (or beci’s) to represent the bisexual community.

When I emailed, messaged and tweeted at “Jayne Shea” and messaged her last Tuesday, I did so because I’d seen Seattle continuing to thrive with TERF’s, or people who exclude trans people.
It occurred to me, that the same group reported to BiNet USA for allowing cis only women was possibly closely associated with Jayne Shea; this has now been confirmed. And now the rest is history, Black-bisexual-intersex-trans history as I, thefayth, recently became more public in my transition from assumed cis female to known intersex trans multi-gender being.

Do the previous personal statements, structural and procedural changes described previously mean that BiNet USA is finished doing intersectional advocacy within bisexual communities? Absolutely not.
I, thefayth, Faith Cheltenham, have asked Juba Kalamka to step up into the presidency of BiNet USA; he’s agreed to begin serving on January 21, 2021.

Personally speaking I think, it’s important to honor and join a legacy of many Black people disposed of in social justice, but keep in mind: this flushing was intentional.
I don’t believe bisexual, or any ostensible LGBTQIA “communities” accept or celebrate trans, intersex, Black, and/or otherwise multiple marginalized people when all those checkboxes combine into real humans.

Many LGBTQIA community organizations, despite their protestations to the contrary, remain centers for the replication and assertion of overcultural dynamics of misogynoir, transmisogyny, ableism, ageism, sexism, anti-Blackness, anti-Semitism, xenophobia and racism/global white supremacy.

I take no part in it; meaning I reject the assertion that my presidency of BiNet USA or Juba Kalamka’s must mean that we represent all bisexuals, as opposed to the most vulnerable bisexuals (and bi+ members who use different labels for their fluid sexualities).

If they have bread, if they have running water, or basic supplies in the time of the virus? That’s the work BiNet USA and myself remain committed to.

JUBA KALAMKA BECOMES BINET PREZ ON 1/21/21

FURTHER LEADERSHIP CHANGES COMING, JUBA KALAMKA BECOMES BINET PREZ ON 1/21/21
By BiNet USA President, Faith Cheltenham, thefayth
With additional edits/support from Juba Kalamka, BiNet USA VP

Per BiNet USA Board of Directors vote on May 2nd, 2020, for protection and safety; the names and personal information of BiNet USA employees, volunteers and board are no longer available to the public, unless otherwise legally required.

In September 2019, the current board of BiNet USA approved the future disclosure of all private donations made by Faith Cheltenham via BiNet USA. This was part of an agreed upon step-down plan with thefayth after board service as the most active board member, volunteer and staff member of BiNet USA from 2004-2018.

On May 2nd, 2020, the BiNet USA board (members: 6 [six]) agreed to fast-track this accounting, including externally prepared financial statements outlining each individual, city and/or “bisexual” organization that directly benefited from donations, grant funding, and fundraising directed by Faith Cheltenham and BiNet USA (usually completed via direct payment to the needy bisexual via Paypal, Venmo or Zelle).

This accounting including prepared statement is forthcoming within 3 (three) months and will include the name, city and organization that benefitted from direct donation from BiNet USA members and employees.

This accounting is not offered to make up for public assertions of thefayth, Faith Cheltenham (and attendantly, BiNet USA) “stealing the bisexual pride flag”, but to better set the record bisexual as to the historic accomplishments of BiNet USA volunteers including thefayth’s significant and sizable donations across bisexual communities with intersectional emphasis, alongside so many other individuals who contributed.

Further, BiNet USA Board was informed by a former President of her intentional executive decision to bypass board approval for the original flag, we were not aware of this, and we hope to learn more about this context.

As a bisexual in the military, there is no distinction in terms of punishment, no refuge in being bisexual. You get the same consequences; you don’t get half a discharge.” — Cliff Arnesen Quote from Lesbian News: October 2001

1965-67, Cliff Arnesen, Bisexual in the U.S. Army, served stateside during the Vietnam War, was imprisoned and placed in segregated confinement for his own protection due to threats made on his life at the time.

Mr. Arnesen held an “Undesirable” based on homosexuality laws, which was changed to the General Under Honorable Conditions. Ten years after service; under President Jimmy Carter’s amnesty program, for which Arnesen petitioned the Department of the Army Review Board, which granted him the General Under Honorable Conditions.

It is even more important today under President Trump and his ant- GLBT administration; and reflects the contributions that Bisexual people have made to the larger Gay movement in the pursuit of “Equality in the Military and within society. — Cliff Arnesen, Bisexual U.S. Army Veteran

This video will be added to the Library of Congress very soon and Step Up For Mental Health is honored to be able to showcase it for you now. Please share it with your networks as we continue to celebrate Bi+ International Visibility Month in September and to support our bi+ community and veterans!

The study consisted of 2,651 Australian Adults who were bisexual or were attracted to more than one gender. The study tapped into topics Bi Social Network has been reporting since 2009 about how we need to focus more on mental health and well-being, which is greatly affecting marginalized populations.

The study also shows that people affected in the Bi+ community, who are also living below the poverty line; are more likely to suffer from major mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Many in the straight, gay and lesbian community are afraid of the big “B” word—Bisexual. Would you date a bi+ individual? The biases might surprise you.

The hot topic of the moment—notwithstanding, should straight, gay or lesbian men/women date a bisexual?

Being a bi+ person myself, I find this topic of discussion very humorous. Really, the very same groups who say, ‘its love,’ rights for choice—wouldn’t this fall in line with dating anyone?

I hear it all the time on the streets of Chicago—from the BLGT community that they “tried’ it once, but just couldn’t get over the fact that bisexuals like the opposite sex. Granted, if you are not into it, it can be a hard sell—sort of like Nato (Japan fermented beans)…I get it. But stop to think; is it really all that different?

In relationships, everyone has had a partner they dated and for whatever reason, it didn’t work out. Do you get upset because they dated someone before you? Of course not! It’s just apart of their past.

They Might Leave Me for Another Man!

Well, sorry to state the obvious, but they can leave you for another woman too! Relationships are complicated all by themselves. The fear is internal—it has nothing to do with the person you are dating. If they really truly love you, it shouldn’t matter what partner they had in the past. It’s behind them—they are focusing on you.

They Will Never Be Satisfied with Just Me

I see a pattern here. Is this something you might be thinking for every relationship you are in—or just bisexuals? The reason, what motives do you think your partner isn’t happy with the relationship you have? It’s true, that there are open relationships popping up all around the world—but this has been since the beginning of time. Relax and live in the moment. Stress will only continue to bring problems on what could happen. If there isn’t anything happening now, most likely it will continue, if communication is apart of your relationship.

What Works for One, Doesn’t Work For All Bi+ Individuals

Just think, some politicians are straight, but they seem to be acceptable to the open marriage rule. It only means that you and your partner need to decide what will or won’t work out for the two of you. Generalities don’t play in the whole scheme of the bisexual community. What works for one, may not work for all. Find that special person you can love with your whole heart and mind, and work from there. Love manages a way.

September 23 declared “International Day of Bisexual Visibility in Chicago”
City of Chicago Releases Proclamation in Recognition of Bisexual Visibility Day

The International Day of Bisexual Visibility, also called Celebrate Bisexuality Day or Bisexual Visibility Day, was founded by 3 bisexual community activists in 1999

This year marks the first time the City of Chicago has officially commemorated the day in recognition and support of bisexual communities

The proclamation encourages all Chicago residents to educate themselves about bisexual visibility and civil rights

CHICAGO, IL, USA — On Friday, September 21, 2018, the Office of the Mayor in the City of Chicago issued a proclamation in recognition of the International Day of Bisexual Visibility. This important bisexual community holiday was created by three bisexual activists in 1999 to celebrate bisexual people in the face of invisibility and stigma.

“There is definitely a need for the holiday,” said longtime bisexual community activist and Northwestern University LGBTQIA health researcher, Dr. Lauren Beach. “Bisexual people face stigma and invisibility, not only within society at large, but also within LGBTQIA communities. Bisexual Visibility Day was created by and for bisexual people as a way to affirm and empower ourselves and our communities.”

The Chicago Bisexual Health Task Force (CBHTF) sponsored the proclamation’s development. The CBHTF is a new group of community members, healthcare professionals, and researchers dedicated to improving the lives of bisexual individuals in the Chicagoland area. The proclamation highlights the striking health disparities that bisexual people face compared to people of other sexual orientations.

Dr. Brian Feinstein, a research assistant professor at the Northwestern Institute for Sexual and Gender Minority Health and Wellbeing, noted, “The health disparities affecting the bisexual community have been consistently demonstrated across numerous research studies. These studies have found that bisexual individuals are at increased risk for negative health outcomes such as depression, anxiety, and suicidality compared to heterosexual individuals as well as gay and lesbian individuals, and that these disparities are linked to the prejudice and discrimination that bisexual individuals experience.”

Importantly, the proclamation not only highlights these disparities, but also the tremendous resilience of bisexual communities to thrive despite them. A growing number of community organizations created by and for bisexual, pansexual, fluid, and queer individuals (often called bi+ communities) are creating supportive spaces around the city to strengthen that resilience.

The Bisexual Queer Alliance Chicago (BQAC), an independent 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to educate, empower, and provide resources for bisexual and queer persons, provides one of those spaces. Erie Sara, President of BQAC, discussed the importance of strong bisexual community building with CBHTF: “One fact that goes unrecognized is that bi+ people make up the majority of the LGBTQIA community. We are everywhere, but we are forced into the closet due to social stigma and biphobia. The importance of community for us cannot be understated. Since our identity and existence are so constantly erased, standing together for visibility is of vital importance.”

Adrienne McCue, President and Executive Director of the Chicago-based non-profit Step Up for Mental Health, is working to create inclusive mental health resources for bisexual+ communities in Chicago. “Step Up for Mental Health houses BSN Bi+, which is a special advocacy project dedicated to improving the mental health of bi+ individuals,” says McCue. “We created this project because we believe that the mental health data shows now more than ever, we need to focus on mental health in the bisexual community as a whole. We especially need to improve access to mental health services among bi+ people who are impacted by multiple forms of marginalization. To improve community bisexual+ mental health, we must have a dedicated focus on serving bisexual people of color, transgender and gender non-conforming people, and our youth and elders.”

Bisexual activists from around the country agree. Khafre Kujichagulia Abif, an Atlanta-based author, HIV community organizer, and bisexual health advocate who has been supportive of the work of the CBHTF since its inception, called the proclamation, “historic, unprecedented, and long overdue.” Abif noted the proclamation has far-reaching implications for improving the health and wellbeing of bi+ people: “We always talk about how identity affirmation is important for improving health outcomes of bisexual communities. This proclamation is an example of that affirmation. Bisexual people are here, and we deserve to be recognized.”
