After "The Jersey Shore" rose to national fame in 2009 and made most of its "guidos" and "guidetes" famous, everyone seems to want to be in a reality show. Why wouldn't we? Its instant fame, money and we want to get to go to those red carpet events that we have always dreamed of.

So what exactly is it?

According to Wikipedia "Reality television is a genre of television programming that presents purportedly unscripted dramatic or humorous situations, documents actual events, and usually features ordinary people instead of professional actors.^[1] The genre has existed in some form or another since the early years of television (primarily with game shows), but has expanded significantly since the series Big Brother first aired in 1999.^[1] Programs in the reality television genre are commonly called "reality shows" and often are produced in series. Documentaries and nonfictional programming such as news and sports shows are usually not classified as reality shows.
The genre covers a wide range of programming formats, from game or quiz shows which resemble the frantic, often demeaning shows produced in Japan in the 1980s and 1990s (such as Gaki no tsukai), to surveillance- or voyeurism-focused productions such as Big Brother.^[1]
Reality television frequently portrays a modified and highly influenced form of reality, utilizing sensationalism to attract viewers and so to generate advertising profits. Participants are often placed in exotic locations or abnormal situations,^[1] and are sometimes coached to act in specific scripted ways by off-screen "story editors" or "segment producers," with the portrayal of events and speech manipulated and contrived to create an illusion of reality through editing and other post-production techniques."

Shark Tank

The producers of the ABC reality series Shark Tank are on a nationwide search to discover the next successful - and possibly wealthy - entrepreneurs, inventors, businesspersons, dreamers, promoters, creators and innovators. In each episode, budding entrepreneurs are given the unprecedented chance to make their business dreams come true.

FREE printable labels to NY/ LA agents as well as Casting Directors

I have compiled these and set them up on a label template. These are NOT casting notices but instead reflect the best general information available about current casting directors and agents. Do your homework and use them wisely. Do not phone or visit agents or casting directors' offices. Unless otherwise you have been told to do so. I recommend all contact with casting directors and agents should be by email first. The business has changed to mostly digital and blind mass mailings are not recommended and costly. Again I repeat: DO NOT PUT ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION ON ENVELOPES AND RESUMES! They may end up lost or in the garbage. You never know who is going through the garbage these days. They will grab hold of your email, phone number and worst of all your address.

I usually use these to send out thank you cards after meeting important agents and casting directors.

As I work out a way to attach these templates, I will paste them so that you can build them yourself or email me. I will send over the attachments with what you need and template info. I also recommend you have the name of the person you are sending to or it'll just get lost. You should call and ask the assistants if they are seeking new talent and what look they are seeking now.Save the money and get to the source. You got nothing to lose but a missed opportunity.

The Internet Movie Database (IMDB) is an online database of information related to movies, actors, television shows, production crew personnel, video games, and most recently, fictional characters featured in visual entertainment media.

Getting on IMDB is almost like getting your SAG card. Its exciting.

It is the go to place for everyone in the entertainment industry worldwide. If you say you are an actor, anyone anywhere will go into IMDB to see if it is so.

Now it's gotten much harder to get into their database due to every filmmaker trying to get their film on IMDB.
I believe that getting yourself less than 70,000 points on IMDB Pro makes you a "sometimes working pro actor". But that is my opinion. That does not go for theatre actors. There is a website just for theatre actors too.

I'm going to start with the top websites in LA and NY.

This website is for LA, NY and Vancouver. In my experience in NY, I never really got anything great from it. Eventually fellow actors said I had to be on it. I didn't have any good photos and clips on it. I was also SAG by the time I joined so my choices were limited.

So I stopped paying the yearly fee after a while. When I came to LA last year and got a manager, I was told I had to be on it. It turns out http://www.breakdownservices.com/, which is used by all managers and agents is tied to it. So you have to get your "junk" on it. BREAKDOWN SERVICES cannot be accessed by actors, only agents and managers, but you will eventually have to join and it’s a good starting point for new actors. Actors Access, the actors section has a lot of non-union work.

You will have to join eventually, so just do it now. 2 free pics with your profile. Its $2 per submission or about $69 yearly.

Casting Networks: LA, NY, San Francisco and Miami

In NY: It's great for background, extras. I have never found it to have good lead or featured roles.

It was great income when I was just trying to get by. I got my SAG card, and a lot of stand-in work from it and never had to pay for joining the "background casting" fees. They have open casting days so you can come in and take your photo. I didn't have to pay anything when I first joined but now they have a $5 monthly fee.

Join, apply for all extra stuff and you be getting calls and doing the background stuff will pay off with one day of work. Once casting has called you, you are in their system. So answer the phone. You will always be getting called back. And you can always call them too. Background casting always need people. I actually just got a call from Central Casting NY for a featured bit on CSI. It was a blond Hollywood starlet. I haven't worked for them in over a year (and no longer blond) but since I'm in their system, they still find me and call.

In LA: LAcastings. I found it to be stronger than NY in featured stuff. It has more featured roles but not so much background. There are a lot of actors in LA doing anything just to get on set, struggling to be an extra, to meet people or simply survive.

Anyways it’s cheaper to put a reel up and I have found out that actors looking for agents sometimes get an agent. Isn't that great!? In LA you are nothing if you don't have an agent.

So get your stuff on it, headshots, resume, and clips of talents, anything that gets attention.

It is also used by all agents for commercial work. Actors don't get access to the main, big stuff. Only agents and managers do.

The above are websites I KNOW are used by industry people. Below are the sites I have used and have gotten me some work. Usually non paid. But I consider myself an artist and if I'm not acting, I need to act so I do what I had to do.

One thing you will find is that you have to do the dirty work sometimes. Pick the right projects and you will come out with great friends and a wonderful experience.
Once you decide you will never work for free again, you can find yourself an agent/ manager, join the unions etc. There will be a point in your life you will find that you have paid your dues, have worked enough with little or no pay and will never do it again. But until then here are the sites for you.

Mandy

For production work and beginning acting stuff this is the place to be. It's free and I have found it to be great. I think they have people that actually screen out Craigslist.com talent gigs and bring it into the site to promote it. In NY it was great; in LA is it relatively weak.
I have loved it in the past. It usually offers great non-union and student stuff. Apply, interview, audition and find out if that is the project you want to be in. It's always good practice.
Mandy.com was always my place to go for amateur stuff.

Ok so then there is backstage it’s probably the oldest trade I know of for casting. It's about $12 monthly and instead of buying at the newsstands every week I decided to join online.
I enjoy the newsletter they send out now and then but I don't use it so much for castings. Although you could use it to put up many photos, your reel and links to all your "junk"
I also like the Message Board. It makes for fun comments and sharing of details about the biz.

I do prefer that you do it here, on my blog, where it's free and we can say whatever we want about the acting world without censorship. :)

NY and LA Production Listings

I had all new production listings in NY and LA a few days ago, but one of the trade papers made me take it down.

Its OK. I have other sources, plus it is usually open to the public if you do enough research.
So for now, as I'm copulating this information for us al, you can email me with any questions you may have about these productions and who is casting.

I must say though, I do not recommend blind mailing (just sending your headshots to casting without having the breakdown (characters they are casting)). It can get very costly and most likely go right into the garbage. But most importantly, NEVER, EVER put your personal information on the envelopes, headshots, resumes. You don't know who will get a hold of them. This is your personal info and it can end up on the wrong hands. Be smart. As an actor... you should be. It's tough out there.

Oh and just a couple of days ago, I went to a commercial casting. A big, credible one, and as I was signing in, a couple of the casting directors... or maybe they were assistants, where making fun of a blind submitter they got. They were saying some things that I don't want to repeat, but most importantly when they said "how can someone send us this not knowing who they are sending it to? Full of personal information, you just don't do something like that!"

This is LA after all. Maybe this person did their homework. But you don't know where its going to end up. These people were just mean people. The insight is not meant to discourage you in any way. It's just a thought I felt sharing. But we all can get the point.

Top Talent Agents, Middle size Talent Agents and all others

ok, so when it comes to signing with an agent, please do yourself a favor and do your homework.
There is nothing worst than signing with some fool, landing yourself a job, getting your check signed off to him/her and then never receiving compensation. YES IT HAPPENS, and it happens way too often. These fly-by-night agencies probably started with the best intentions, but soon found themselves broke (agents work hard and long hours with no immediate compensation) and never to be heard from again.

Yes, it has happened to me when I lived in Miami, but I learn from my mistakes and share it with others.

Of course you have heard the warnings, but I have to repeat them again for the sake of those who need to hear it more. NEVER EVER sign with them if they ask for upfront money, make you take new photos with THEIR photographer, or take THEIR classes. Agent's ONLY make money when you do. Agents usually make 10% on film/tv and commercials and 20% on commercial print.

They could say "let me know when you get new headshots/ new training/developed this skill, etc" and you will probably say "who do you recommend?" and now the ball is is someone's court, but I wouldn't know. Depends on the agent/manager or situation. I can only recommend from experience and being slapped with the dumb stick too many times.

I will follow this article with agencies to avoid. I've done the research. Keep in mind things could always change. That is why I'm asking our fellow actors for their input. These agents are getting smarter, and they may not ask you to do things right off the bat. they will get you all excited, thinking you will be a star in no time and hit you up with something. Just because they are not in my "NO GO" list doesn't mean they shouldn't be.

There are some established, credible small agencies that are constantly looking for new talent. In my experience they are modeling/print agencies looking to branch out into the world of stage and on camera acting and voice over.

Bellow are union (SAG, AFTRA and so on) franchised agencies. Doesn't mean they dont take non-union talent but if they book you on something union, be prepared to pay the fees. SAG requires a waiver and a hefty fee, AFTRA only requires a hefty fee. Agents that ask you to join the unions are not making money out of it. It's a recommendation or requirement. A manager who believes in you may put up the money for you as a loan.

Finding a Talent Agent in LA

From my experience I have devoted myself to too many hours working on super low budgets films. But if you haven't done it.. you should. It helps build your reel, not necessarily your resume because no one cares about these films you have done before some major network job or a featured on a blockbuster. People are always saying to me that these indie films I have worked on does not matter because anyone can shoot a film in their backyard or basement. Not that my films were done that way but if they haven't seen it, it doesn't matter.

I have landed a great agency last week because of my reel. These films have showed my diversity and range. When you choose a project that can give you that, you should do it. But always keep in mind... there is a better actor than you somewhere so keep training, any skill that can give you a competitive edge. Again I say "a professional actor is a struggle no matter where you are and at whatever level" have yourself something your competitor may not have.

So how to get an agent in LA:

I did numerous mailings. Never worked. What a waste of money that was and has always been (for me) So what I did was, I got myself a website, got teaser reel up ( less then one minute, everyone likes to be teased) then I got a easy link to my full reel and sent out a massive email. I probably sent over 300 emails and got about 5 back. I was fortunate enough to get good agencies contacting me. But the key was, work, severe, persistence. Someone was going to get back to me no matter what. I was going to email them until they blocked me. I will watch some dumb movie and would look up the actors that were not in major parts. Check out who was rep'ng them and say HEY!! here I am, and I'm great, look ay my reel!

Here are some helpful notes I've gotten and I will follow with my own advice:

Find out if any of your friends or contacts know the agents you're targeting or are represented by them. Ask about their experiences, and ask if they can give you a reference. (BTW your fellow actors never will, although they may say so)
Submit your headshot and resume to the agent, with a brief cover letter introducing yourself. (It'll probably end up in the garbage, they get too many)
Follow up with a phone call and a postcard. (Don't call, unless you have hard skin and can manipulate the assistant ****assistants are extremely important)
Send invitations to all of your performances to agents whom you have targeted.(that's good)
Perform in a "showcase" (see glossary), but select carefully. Many showcases involve a fee, so find out in advance which agents will attend. (not so bad, super costly, but may get something out of it)
Be persistent but not obnoxious. Send postcards every two to four months updating the agents on your activities. (more money... remember after 100 you send, one will look at it so DO IT!)
Prepare a monologue. When an agent calls you into his/her office, you will probably be asked to do a monologue or cold reading. Dress in a flattering but professional manner, and bring headshots and resumes. (you know to always be prepared although I never found that the case. No one has ever asked me to do a monologue right of the bat unless it was a very unprofessional production, but don't take my word on it)
Thank agents for interviews, and if they don't choose you this time around, keep in touch and don't take it personally; they can only take so many of each type of actor at a time. (It's the way the business works, so shine bright the first time around so that you wont have to come back! Prepare! I say read "How To Win Friends and Influence People" agents love to hear the sweet things you have to say from that book)

LA has been like a succubus. Raping me of all my money...well all my credit cards money, to invest in my career. (New photos.. again? But I just got them a year ago?)But what the hell? I've spent over 48K in college and where is it getting me? My resume is good, I'm talented, driven, smart, I have determination, goals an so on... (LA Casting (commercials) chages $25 plus p/pic and $9 monthly and Actors Access/Breakdowns (theatrical)$10 p/pic and $70 year/membership) Agents are not going to pay that for you.

We have to focus on the training at hand. New classes, voice, dialect, auditioning, cold-reading, martial arts, combat, techniques, not to mention new casting directors and their assistants classes and seminars. How are you going to meet them? By taking their showcases, classes etc...
It's all money, a lot of it.

If we have a part time job? Forget it. We can get an audition last minute while you are just starting our shift and then what??? How do we escape? Can we say no, sorry, I have to pay my rent this month. We got to be ready to book it.

So be prepared. If you want a top agent who will work for you no matter what, BE READY. Have money saved, know what you are getting into because a good agent will drop you "at the drop of a hat".

Getting a NY agent:

I can't tell you how to get an agent in NY because I have never gotten one. You can actually work in NY independently if you make the right connections. Most of the links I found online go back to what I said above. But I have lived in NY for over 5 year and worked and this is how I did it:
I got jobs as an extra (I know we hate it but its true) through nycastings.com. They have open calls and once you are in the system and submit yourself they will never let you go. Through that I got "under fives" because the director needed it, stand in and body double work (which paid a lot) and got offered numerous things. I don't think I took enough advantage of what the NY industry had to offer (Union seminars, Actors Connection etc) but what I can say is... its definitely limited.

What an Agent Does

A lot of people know that they need to get an agent, but few know exactly what an agent will do for them once they have them. An agent's job is to utilize his/her contacts and inside information in a way that benefits you by getting you acting gigs.

The typical process for new clients is that the agent will initially set up "general" meetings with executives, producers and casting directors around town to sort of 'introduce' you to the decision makers. The purpose of these meetings is to put a bug in their ear so that when an acting opportunity comes up that matches your gender, age, appearance and skill level, you'll be first in line.

This is really one of the MAIN reasons you want to get an agent. It's getting to utilize the web of contacts they have made over their years in the business to your benefit.

Beyond the initial meetings, the agent is your 'representative.' They essentially can speak on your behalf regarding particular roles and upcoming projects. Unless you bring a separate attorney to the table, they are also your representative in legal matters that are related to your job. Your agent will negotiate the terms of a deal for you and will often work with others at his/her agency to make sure you're top of mind for opportunities in other departments (e.g., movies, television, commercials, etc.)

Getting an Agent to Notice You

I hear too often upcoming actors complaining that they can't get an agent and yet, when you study what they've done over the past year or two, they can't point to any one event where an agent might have actually shown up! The point is, you can't get an agent by sitting on your couch. You have to take the initiative and start working wherever you can, so that you won't have to seek out an agent, they'll come and see you!

Find plays, short films, student films, whatever and whenever you can. Take classes if only because you increase the likelihood that you will meet someone who has a connection (or even has an agent) that will help you get what you need.

You might even consider becoming your own producer. We live in a time where you have a global audience right at your fingertips. All you have to do is give them something to watch. So, consider creating your own content that will help to get you noticed. There are success stories every day of the unknown who posted something spectacular on YouTube, or of the actor whom no one knew until he wrote a role for himself to play and managed to get his own funding. You simply have to find your own path and not wait to be told what it is.

Getting an Agent is Secondary to Starting Your Career

Don't let not having an agent keep you from starting your career. The search for an agent is secondary to your getting out there and making a name for yourself first. Besides, an agent will be much more inclined to represent someone that he/she believes is going to find their own opportunity.

The big misnomer is that once you get an agent, you simply have to sit by the phone and wait for it to ring.

The sad truth is that agents will definitely work on your behalf, but they're going to get the clients that are already established working first because they know that's where their meal ticket is. So, sitting around waiting for them to make you famous is as ridiculous as it sounds.

So How Do You Get an Agent?

The process differs from person to person. But the one key factor that everyone has in common is that they communicate their desire. When appropriate, you need to bring up the fact that you're looking for an agent. You might be at a casting call where they ask about your agent -- don't lie -- tell them you're in the process of looking for one and ask whom they recommend. The point is, you need to be sure you're communicating to those around you because you never know who will be in a position to help you. Let them know you're looking and always find out if they have opinions on the best agent for you.

Agents vs. Managers

The main difference between an agent and a manager is how much personal focus you get. An agent is concerned with one thing -- getting you your next (or first) gig. A manager however, is more of a personal thing. They do much of the same work that the agent does, but they will also handle you much more closely than a typical agent because they handle more personal issues in your life.

Look, all you really need to know is that if you put yourself out there and fully commit to your career as an actor both in your performances as well as in your decision to pursue your dreams, then more than likely, you'll have your choice of agents knocking at your door.

Why move? NY or LA

Before I start pouring my heart out in the first few weeks I have been in LA as an aspiring working actress I had to consider many options. I have come to love New York. Everything about Manhattan makes me hot. Anyone you meet that lives in Manhattan loves it, dislikes LA and the people...especially the entertainment industry and to tell you the truth, so have I.
But of course you cant beat the weather, and this is me writing in the beginning of February where everyone is freezing in NY and I'm strolling around with the top down in my convertible, wearing short skirts :)

So this is what I got from researching endless hours on the net. I hope to someday be the blog you will come to so you can find all the answers you need in one search.

Avoiding LA has been a long brutal journey, but lets face it... if you want to be an OC (on camera actor) you need to be in LA, unless you are an extremely talented Broadway star. If not... you need to move to LA in my experience.

So things to consider:
There are lots of films and tv shot in the NYC area, but it is not the center of the film business the way it is the center of the theatre industry. There might be fewer opportunities for film and tv work available. On the other hand, for just those reasons there will also be less competition for film and tv work in NYC than around the LA area. Which is not to say there will be no competition. NYC is filled with actors who pursue both theatre and film careers. Additionally, most film/tv actors are not rooted to their homebase and are prepared and willing to travel to pursue their careers no matter where they live. And I can say I have tried it, although not successfully. No LA agent will rep a new actor if they live in NY unless they are "NAME TALENT"
That said, the choice, is, of course, ours, on our journey together on this blog. Being a professional actor is a struggle no matter where you are and at whatever level. I can only wish us all the luck in the world.

Moving to New York to pursue your career is the first step toward a promising future, but that future isn't always as rosy as it may appear from your hometown bedroom. The competition and the sheer size of the acting pool here can often be overwhelming for actors who are new to the city and to castings. Thoughtful preparation and research will be the new actor's best tools.

Before you come to the city, realize that many actors just like you are making the move as well. Your best defense is to know yourself, and know yourself well. As a new agent at the Kolstein Talent Agency managing the developmental film/TV department, I frequently work with actors who are new to New York, and I consistently remind them: Know your type and own it. Familiarize yourself with your niche, and think actively and strategically about how to present yourself. Being confident and comfortable with the place you best fit in this industry is your smartest strategy.

It will also be important for you to develop a working knowledge of the major casting offices in New York and the types of projects they cast for. Research the agencies, and plan on mailing post cards or headshots and résumés to strong boutique agencies, which will have the resources to work with actors who are just beginning their careers. worknyc.com) and One on One (www.oneononenyc.com). Most important, make a resolution to devote yourself to your craft and take advantage of the many opportunities that New York has to offer you!

"Whether they do it before they get to New York or when they get to New York, what actors are really going to need, first of all, is a great headshot. Because until they have a really good headshot and a really well-constructed résumé, they're probably not going to get through many doors. I can't tell you how many times somebody has just wandered into my office with a snapshot. My response is, "Thank you for the snapshot, but you're really going to want to go to a professional photographer and get at least one great headshot for theater, film, and television—more of a legit shot—and for commercials a more smiley, warm, friendly shot. It's so competitive, and there are so many polished, well-established performers here. A headshot is your calling card. You'll also want to have a really well-constructed, well-organized, aesthetically beautiful résumé."

Other than that, it's getting the lists of agencies. Right off the bat, you should get Call Sheet or other industry-related books that list the agencies. The agencies state what they do, and actors can specifically target whatever areas they're interested in. Once they have the names, they can mail their pictures and résumés to those agencies.

Actors should just start throwing themselves in immediately and auditioning for things on their own. Just get out there. If you don't have a lot of credits, you should get yourself into the mix. Start doing showcases or doing whatever you can get on your own, then continue to follow up with post cards to agents. I would also suggest that, realistically, unless they're independently wealthy, actors get jobs with flexible hours, so they can go on auditions.

So basically: great headshot, put yourself out there, find out who the agents are and what they do, and just be really professional and active and moving forward. Throw your whole soul into it."

So what I have found before moving to LA:

"1. Come with enough money saved up for three things:

Apartment- You will need first and last month's rent plus a deposit. And give yourself a cushion in case you don't find a job right away. Typical rent is about a grand if you don't have a roommate. And a deposit can be anywhere from $500 to the same amount of your monthly rent. So budget accordingly.
Headshots- You need to invest in headshots when you get here. With headshots now being shot digitally you might save money but don't forget to factor in printing and retouching. Also if you're going to use hair/make-up services it will be an additional cost.
Class- Sign up for one as soon as you get here. This should be high on your list. Eat, sleep, work, class. Besides, it's a great way to meet people.

2. When looking for apartments, make sure to ask about parking. I personally would not rent at a place without a parking spot. It can be a hassle to park in Los Angeles and when you get home late, you don't want to park ten blocks away from your apartment, especially if you're in a not so safe neighborhood.
3. Central air and heat is not a standard amenity here so figure out how important that is to you. The places that do have it tend to be a little pricier.
4. Be upfront with your boss about being an actor. You're not the first actor they've hired.
5. Craigslist.org is not only a wonderful place to find an apartment, it's a wonderful site to find things FOR your apartment. You can even get a lot of stuff free if you go an pick it up.
6. If you are here to act, be prepared to give it some time. I really feel like a minimum of two years is pretty standard to get the ball rolling. Don't expect overnight success.
7. Get a subscription to IMDB.Pro. It's a great tool to keep up with the industry and to educate yourself on who is who.
8. Mapquest will save your life and have a Thomas Guide in your car at all times.
9. This is a small town. You never know who knows who so be careful who you talk about and what you say. You'd be surprised to know how everything here comes full circle when you least expect it.
10. Last but not least, it's going to get tough, and you're gonna have rough times but give yourself a shot. Nothing good comes easy, so be prepared to fight, to work hard, and to pay your dues.
