For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit."

Psalm 12: 6

"And the words of the Lord are flawless, like silver reined in a furnace of clay, purified seven times."

Bible is the scripture of God, which is something God want to tell men. Sometimes God will talk with men directly; sometimes God put his thought inside of the crowd. Bible consists both old and new testaments, consisting 66 volumes in total - from Genesis to Revelation, lasting over 1600 years. Bible was written by over 40 different people. Some of them are emperor, shepherd, fisherman, doctor, scholar and other ordinary people. However, from Genesis to Revelation, volumes are connected with each other that construct a complete information integration. Furthermore, all people or objects that appear on Bible are consistent and harmonious. Christians said that no other books would be on the same benchmark as Bible because Bible is God's words.

Bible: Agreement between God and Man

Exodus 34:27

"The Lord said to Moses, 'Write down these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel'."

Hebrews 8:10

"This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time, declares the Lord. I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people."

Bible is an agreement between God and men. In the Old testament, we see God made agreement with Noah, Abraham, Moses, Joshua and David. Every agreement was made in accordance with the previous agreement and extended it. Those are God gave to us - fate, promise and accountability.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Postscript: I have run this blog for a while and read quite a few Bible verses and stories. To ask the question 'what is Bible?' is a little bit late. But today, I would like to summarize what Bible is after reading of Zhou's article. For Zhou's article, please refers to http://zzpj.bloghome.cn/posts/47154.html.

Philosophy of Bible 2 - Human's Nature

The series of 'Philosophy of Bible' are the summary from Ge's article (2008). After reading the article, I try to drop down some ideas I think is important. The original article please refers to http://article.hongxiu.com/a/2008-2-18/2553664.shtml.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bible Genesis 2: 15-17

"The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take cared of it. And the LORD God commanded the man, 'You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.'"

Genesis 2:25

"The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame."

Genesis 3:6

"When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. "
------------------------------

Based on the verses above, we are aware that God finished the creation of man, and then let them work in Eden and take care of the garden. Apparently, the nature of human embraces no evil. Man doesn't have shame and moral. Man just obeyed God's words and lived. Hence, we can conclude that the nature of human is kindness.

However, Eve didn't obey God's rule. From it, we can see the 'greed' from human. She saw "the fruit of the tree was good for food" -- greedy for food; "pleasing to the eye" -- greedy for aesthetics feeling; and "desirable for gaining wisdom" -- greedy for wisdom. then "she took some and ate it" -- greed made her forgot what God told her. Also, Eve gave the fruit to Adam to eat as well. She did it wrong and she let Adam wrong as well.

Therefore, human has a good basis because of the nature of us, but also has appetence to go evil.

A Chat with a Christian 4

"Why the LORD GOD is the only God? Also, the universe might be created by someone, but why must your God? Why not Buddhist or others?"

This question I asked Deepa (a Christian from CIF) before as well, which is always asked because I still haven't get answer that make sense to me. I asked the question to Ryan too.
------------------
Me: If God exists,it must be all Gods exist for every single religion.

Ryan: No, all the other religions besides Christianity are wrong, they have false Gods that don't exist ... my proof for this is this: all the world religions the concept of sin and that humans have sinned, but instead of having a Saviour. They say, just make sure you do more good things than bad things then you will be alright, but that doesn't make sense .... that would make God corrupt. You see, if I'm standing in a courtroom and I murdered someone, and I say to the judge "Hey judge, I know I did that crime, but since then I've never done it again and I've also done all these good things such as giving money to the poor and helping people. Can't you just let me go free?" Will the judge let me go free? No he won't. In the same way God can't let you go free if you have done good things. So we know that God cannot compromise his justice, he cannot be corrupted. all the 'gods' in the other religions are corrupt because their god is not just. But the God of Christianity is true because He upholds his justice yet shows his love at the same time by sending the punishment upon his Son (Jesus) instead of the guilty sinner. So, you are either going to satisfy his justice if you die and go to Hell .... or if Jesus took it on the cross for you.

You have a cross. What would you want ... Heaven or Hell? You must Repent (turn from your sins) and trust Jesus that he died on the cross for you and you will go to Heaven when you die.

-----------------------

Well, Ryan is an absolutely good persuader and he always can apply practical examples to convince you. But one thing, actually, he does not know much about other religions. In fact, I think other religions must have something right that make so many people to follow. Ryan's logic is from Bible. Even the saying of 'sending 40 different people as instrument for writing God's words', even Bible is logically make sense to some people. But from my perspective, it is still hard to prove it is true and correct to me.

Philosophy of Bible 1 - Human's Attribute

The series of 'Philosophy of Bible' are the summary from Ge's article (2008). After reading the article, I try to drop down some ideas I think is important. The original article please refers to http://article.hongxiu.com/a/2008-2-18/2553664.shtml.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bible:
Genesis 2:7
"The Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being."

Genesis 1:26
"Then God said, 'let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.'"

---------------------------------------

God formed man by dust and breathed into man's nostrils. That is why human differs from plants and animals because human have the spirit from God. Suppose without the dust, God's spirit does not have a vehicle; then human only have body but no spirit. In that case, we are unable to live. Therefore, we can conclude that man is a combination of material and spirit. Additionally, as I mentioned in proceeding post, we have the image from God and, Thus, we have personality. Furthermore, as we have the spirit from God, human have godhood.

Human is a combination of material and spirit; a combination of clay and soul; and a combination of humanity and godhood. Therefore, the attribute of human is how to maintain a relationship between material and spirit; body and soul; humanity and deity, in order to keep them balance.

A Chat with a Christian 3

One day, I met Ryan again and had a chat with him. The questions and answers are below.

Me: Hey, Ryan, have u even seen Jesus??

Ryan: No, I don't need either.

Me: If u have never seen it, why you are so sure he is right there? To see is to believe!

Ryan: It's logical to know God exists.

Me: It's a bit abstract.

Ryan: There must be a first cause, also known as an uncaused cause. This is because all things have a beginning, and are caused by something. For example, a tree was caused by a seed, which caused by another tree, and so on and so on. But in the end, there must be something that exists that was not caused by anything. This is because there cannot be an infinite length causal chain – that is, something causing something causing something, must have a beginning to that chain – and nothing can cause itself. That then concludes that there must be a first cause and that first cause must be infinite; it must be God.

The fact that the universe exists must mean that there is something outside of it that was the cause of it. Without this first cause, the universe would simply not exist.

Me: Okay, first cause, but you cannot explain who make God in accordance with your logic.

Ryan: To explain it a different way, logic says that for us finite beings to exist, there must be something infinite. If God was not infinite, the question then must be asked is, who created God? If someone says that god was created by another god who is finite, then who created that god? It turns into an infinite regress. But in the end, there must be something that is infinite and is outside of time. The Bible says that there is just one God who is infinite.

------------------------------

It is clear that Ryan has strong belief on Bible. Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?"
......Jesus replied "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's."......

I read this section after I saw a website of a Catholic called Zhou. He raised an important idea, indicating Bible advocates 'balance life'.

Many people think religion will make people be far away from their family, which will influence their mind. However, Zhou here, pointed out the bible story above means that our study is important, our family is important, money is important, and religion is important as well. 'Balance' is a guideline of our living. Bible gives direction and provides a philosophy for our well living.

However, if we look back the post I wrote on 3rd of May, throughout the Bible discussion, it raises an idea 'put God in the first position', which means God will go over your parents, your family and friends. That means God must be always on the top to all Christians. In that case, how to get a balance?

A Chat with a Christian 2

One day, I talked with Ryan, regarding to the topic of 'the sins of human' again. I believe human were born without sins. Also, if we do everything right and we are well being, we are still innocent.

Ryan told me:"well being careful can't save you from Hell."

He kept saying: "because even if from now on you never sinned again and you did nothing wrong .... God can't send you to Heaven."

"you see, if I'm standing in a courtroom and I murdered someone, and I say to the judge "Hey judge, I know I did that crime, but since then I've never done it again and I've also done all these good things such as giving money to the poor and helping people. Can't you just let me go free?" Will the judge let me go free? No he won't. In the same way God can't let you go free if you have done good things."

"so God should send you and everyone else to Hell (place of punishment) and He would be perfectly just in doing so"

"Jesus Christ died on the cross 2000 years ago, He never ever sinned because He was God in flesh...but He died to take the punishment you deserve in Hell, He took it on the cross....so justice has been served and you can go to Heaven when you die ....to receive this, you must repent (turn from your sins) and trust that Jesus died on the cross for you and you believe you are going to Heaven only because HE died for you and not because you earn it or you deserve it."

Christian always say Jesus Christ has cost his blood and life to let us follow God. His blood wrapped off the sins from us. Well, the strong belief of Christians is impressive to me, but it still does not make sense to me. I think I need longer time to understand.

Special Definitions to Fortune and Misfortune

Bible - 2 Corinthians 6: 10

"Sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; poor, yet making many rich; having nothing, and yet possessing everything."

The citation above looks confused, right?! Bible has distinctive definitions to fortune and misfortune. To be honest, life is short. However, disease, disaster and sorrow make people feel the life is still too long to go. Plenty of people want to know what their future gonna be. That is why so many people are the fan of horoscope. Since we can try to avoid or change it if we can predict our future.

Bible rejects all misfortunes. Someone might be sorrowful, poor, having nothing. If the person has God, he/she will have everything. Bible let us go over the disease, disaster and sorrow, so that we are able to subdue our fate and make us be confident to face fortune and misfortune.

In my opinion, religion gives people a thought. Perhaps, God has never existed. However, Bible is successful to turn some people's thinking around and giving them power to face various obstacles.

LOVE - the top of moral

Bible - Matthew 22: 36-40

"Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?"

"Jesus replied: ' Love the Lord your God with All your heart with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbour as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."

Here, 'Love your neighbour' appears again, which I mentioned in the previous post. It is no doubt that Bible highlights 'LOVE' is the attribute of God. Also, 'LOVE' is the top of moral in Bible.

From the citation above, we are aware Jesus Christ indicates 'LOVE' is the vital point of Bible. In addition, the 'LOVE' mentioned here is not only the love to God, but also the love to your neighbour. In other word, Bible requires all Christians, love themselves = love neighbour = love God.

the Value of Life v.s the Value of Living

Bible Matthew 16:26

"What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?"

It means the life of a person is much higher than other material things.

Certainly, our living is valuable and surely we are living in a material world. Look back the Bible Genesis section, God created the materials first, then created human. That is why Adam didn't suffer hungry at all. Yet, Bible says the value of a life is much higher than other, even the whole world (incl. the sum of world energy and the sum of gold and diamond).

Many historic emperors wanted to devote all they have to trace longer life. Even now, as Chinese people always say some good words to other, they would choose to say "good health" before "good money'. Since we realise only the good health can lead us to make good money.

Therefore, probably you are working hard on your job, your study or anything you are interested, but make sure you are being well.

After Eden - by Dan Leitha

Leitha, D, (Answers in Genesis Ministries International), 2000, viewed 31/5/08 <http://www.skywriting.net/cartoons3.html#after-eden>

Jesus Anointed by a Sinful Woman

Luke 7: 36-50

The section is telling a story about Jesus, a sinful woman and a prarisee - Simon. Jesus goes to the Simon's, a sinful woman anoints to Jesus but Simon does not. Jesus tells a story to Simon, which means a person with more sins who will feel more guilty rather than the person with less sins. Therefore, if God forgives both theirs sins, the person with more sins will be love God more.

The story tells no matter how many sins we have before, as long as we love our God from now on, we come to him, we will be forgiven.

Bible & Accountability

Bible - Romans 14:12

"So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God."

Every single person has his/her own accountability on various aspects, to his/her work, to family, to friends, etc. Bible said, we have accountability to God. The accountability to God embraces "put God on the first position in your life"; "God is everything"; "God is above of your family", etc.

Clearly, the accountability to God, it is hard to accomplish. From my position, I feel the accountability is heavy. Even though the accountability to others people, it is not easy to do it. For example, it is common to see many people are always late for their dating or meeting. Not occasionally but keep doing it. Furthermore, we will find various excuses to explain or cover our mistakes or faults such as "I am late because of the traffic jam" or "Because no one told me the correct time to meet up", etc. It is a tiny thing but it is a kind of accountability of a person. We should recognise our faults and mistakes, and show our sincerity to others. I think most people understand the principle but few people can make it.

I was always late before. I am trying to correct it now. In order to maintain a good relationship with others, the most important thing is that I am responsible for what we do. The accountability to God is still too far away from me. Therefore, I think I should start with the accountability to other people.

Bible & Attitude

Ephesians 4:1-3

"As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace."

From my point of view, attitude is the crucial factor to affect a person or a thing will be successful or not. Bible also teaches a life attitude we should have: 'humble', 'gentle', 'patient' and 'bearing with one another in love'.

In fact, it is hard to insist all of these all the time especially human is emotional. Sometimes we would be out of control. However, as the Bible guideline, as least it can direct us towards an correct attitude.

Judging Others

Luke 6:37 -38

"Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you."

I quite like this verse. Even though I am not a Christian. However, I still find some verses could lead us to be well being in the world and how to deal with others.

We judge others all the time, from the high court to our usual life. Usually, we will think or say someone did something wrong. In fact, we should not judge others as we were not them. We cannot purely from their viewpoint to make the decision. Hence, we don't have a right to judge other. Meanwhile, we don't like someone judges us as well.

Therefore, we should treat others the same as ourselves. Judge, Condemn, forgive, give and measure, we should not put these things to other as we don't like these things on us as well. It is so important to know how to treat others as yourself.

God's Image on Jesus Christ

There are a few verses to indicate Jesus Christ is the image of God. Jesus is the son of God, who has the image of invisible God.

2 Corinthians 4: 4-6
"The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see th light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For we do not preach ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake. "

Here points out Jesus Christ's image is God's image.

Colossians 1:15
"He is the image of the invisible God, he first born over all creation."

The 'he' here means Jesus Christ. However, according to the Genesis 1, the 7-day creation does not mention Jesus. This verse shows Jesus Christ comes before everything in the world.

God's Image in New Testament

Bible 1 Corinthians 11:7

"A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man."

In fact, I still don't understand this verse. From my perspective, it seems like man is the extending of God, or part of God; woman is the extending of man. Based on this logic, God =>Man=>Woman. It probably would be the reason to explain why women always can't get fair treated all around the world because woman is lower than man which is decided when God creates human.

I don't want to agree with this point but the realities in the world, it is common to see the sex discrimination anywhere. We can't control it but we are trying to make it better. In the near future, I look forward to seeing the real fair between man and woman.

God's Image in Old Testament

Bible PSALM 8: 5-8:

"You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honour."

"You made him ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet: all flocks and herds, and the beasts of the field, the birds of the air and the fish of the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas. "

God gives us the responsiblity to rule over the world. However, We can't control the world. For example, the earthquake in China, till today, 68109 people were killed. It is so sad to see so many people died in my country. I and my family are the lucky one who are not living in the earthquake area. Even though I don't know any victims, I am still feeling so bad about the disaster but nothing we could do the prevent it happen.

God gives us the responsibility but doesn't give power to us. Facing the natural disaster, we are inability. We can't control it.

To God, please bless my country - China, please get her away from disaster, please bless the country will host the Olympic Game successfully. We will do our best to resolve those issues and problems.

God's Image in Genesis

I am very curious that how God looks like. Although we see some images about Jesus Christ, we don't have image of God. In fact, Bible has content to indicate God's image.

The 1st paragraph about God's image is from Genesis 1: 26-28:

"Then God said: 'Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, an over all the creatures that move along the ground."
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God, he created him; male and female, he created them.' "

From here, we know that male and female are the special creatures of God. God give his own image to us. Hence, what we look like is God's image. God creates the world and gives special tasks to people to do. In addition to the term of "our image"&"our likeness", it is so weird to use 'our'. That means God has various of spirits and those spirits have special connections with each other.

Got an Answer

ACTS 17: 24-27

Christians always told me that God created us, created everything. And I asked why he created us? I've got an answer today, though I still don't know the purpose behind.

In this section, one verse "God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us" (Bible, ACTS 17: 27), that tells me the answer.

God wants us seek him, reach out of him and find him. He want us to be able to have a relationship with him.

Hence, God created us because want a relationship with him, then next question comes up: why does he want a relationship with us? I asked 'God feels lonely, so wants us be with him?', but Deepa said:"No!", and told me that the answer would be in next couple of chapters. I think I can get an answer if I get in-depth of Bible.

The Beginning of the World

Genesis 1: 1-32
Genesis 2: 1-2

CIF made special arrangement for the Bible talks: from this week, we will start learning from the first section of the Bible and talking about the creature of the world. The arrangement is especially for the new students like me.

In this reading section, it is telling that God spent 7 days to complete the creature of the world.

1st Day: God separate the light and darkness and defined 'day' and 'night'.
2nd Day: God made an expanse and separation between the waters, then defined the expanse 'sky' where is above the water.
3rd Day: God gather the water under sky and let the dry ground appear, which is called 'land'; then God let the land produce vegetation.
4th Day: God marked seasons and days of the year, created the star and give light to the earth.
5th Day: God made living and moving things in the sky and under the sea.
6th Day: God created rest of things the earth was need, wild animal, livestock and so on; then God created man based on his image first and created female as well and gave everything in the earth for all livings.
7th Day: God just finished all works of creation, took a rest on the day, and blessed the day and made it holy.

That's why we have rest on Sunday, right!?

I asked Deepa that why God made the world? She said, from the Bible, God just wants to create a peaceful environment, probably it is an extend of him, but people just turn around from him and go away. That is why some people always reject God.

I might agree that everything in the world probably is created by someone as the complexity, which just cannot simply explain by evolvement. However, I am still not sure whether we are made by God or not. Why must be Christian God to make us? Why not other Gods? How to prove Christian God is the only God of us?

Deepa, Thanks very much.......

I am not sure how much I will know about God and Bible after my 1-year study in Australia but at least I will treasure those experiences from CIF and those nice people I met. Deepa, she is one of them.

This post is nothing about Bible. I just want to say thanks to Deepa, who is a girl from Crossroads Christian Church (CCC). She helps to organize a lot of events and activities for church people, especially put her eyes on international students, give us a warm welcome and invite us to join the activities from CCC.

Deepa spends an hour with me in ANU every friday for an individual bible's talk, give me some extra helps to understand the Bible stories. I am appreciated for her help. So I just want to say: Deepa, Thanks very much!
