<itunes:summary>In Episode 13 of the BMP, we will finish our study into the worldly assumptions of manliness – manly behaviors and attitudes assumed by the world – that often Biblical men adopt as the norm.
It is pretty surprising, really, how much of my own shortcomings showed up when studying the traits, behaviors and habits of worldly manliness. But, as always, it is overwhelmingly sweet to see how Jesus uses experiences and people to narrow my path toward Him. It was probably because I had just finished reading Generous Justice by Tim Keller that so much of the social justice and the marginalized made their way into this episode. Another part would be the fact that the marginalized were frequently visiting me, even before I started reading Generous Justice. God just had a plan to refine my cold heart through them.
I hope you find this odd mix of life lessons, observations and research compelling in your own life.
What other worldly assumptions of manliness do you see even Christian men adopting as habits?</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Welcome back to the BMP! Thanks so much to those of you who have come wondering back. I’m sure my absence has been quite a mystery and I want to waste no time explaining.
Today’s episode is to tell the story of what has stolen my attention over these past few months. We will discuss the lies that we tell ourselves and how these lies can distract the work of God in our lives.
I’ll tell the story of how God changed my attitude towards work in general, from careless waiting to focused expectancy. The change in me ended up moving me to Phoenix, AZ, leaving loved ones to answer a call to be open to mission.
We will also talk about a proper attitude of work that includes and leans into God for interrupting the lies we tell ourselves with His truth. Some methods to take thoughts captive and really go after the ministry before us as God provides. Again, thanks for coming back to the BMP and I hope you enjoy today’s show.</itunes:summary>

		<itunes:summary>Worldly Assumptions
Thank you for joining in on the Biblical Manhood Podcast! This episode is about some worldly assumptions of manliness that influence decision making in men, believing and not. Have you ever caught yourself defending a thought or action with worldly reasoning? Maybe the action itself isn’t overtly wrong malevolent, but is not uplifting and above reproach, and the reasoning used to defend those actions is at its core, not Biblical.
I’ve noticed a lot of this thinking in my life lately and want to share some experiences where I defended seemingly harmless actions in a worldly way. As a result, God used my Missional Community to expose and restore me to pursuing Biblical manhood.
Sometimes I get a little excited about certain topics. I did in this one and it would have made the episode much longer. So this will have to be a two-part episode. Look forward to Worldly Assumptions Part 2 in the near future.
I hope these points related to dating, missions and humility encourage you to examine your outlook on life and motivations for actions.
Thanks again for stopping by and check us out on Facebook and Twitter for updates.</itunes:summary>

Welcome back to the BMP!
Today’s episode is such a joy for me to share with you because you’ll get to hear from a Biblical man who has every reason to brag about himself but truly counts it all as loss for the sake of knowing Jesus. I’m so glad to call Jimmy my friend and really value his input when I need encouragement and wisdom.
In this episode, Jimmy will tell us a little about his background and the foundations that started his walk with God. We’ll hear about a once broken relationship with Jimmy’s father that God is now restoring for His glory. Jimmy shares his passions in life, thoughts on Spiritual gifts and a story of previous “idols” that could never have glorified God. We also discuss frustrations with men in and outside the church and the legacy of cultural change he wants to leave when “Before the throne of God above.”
What an answer to prayer it was to do this interview. I hope you enjoy it and are blessed by Jimmy’s testimony.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Welcome back to the Biblical Manhood Podcast! Our episode today is a much lighter topic than we’ve been discussing in the past few episodes. We will establish a philosophy of being a Biblical Gentleman.
Because Jesus is our example, we will look at what it means to be aware of and meet the physical needs of others in an appropriate and edifying way. The Bible has a lot to say about humility and considering others better than ourselves. A word that beautifully illustrates this seemingly distant, but vital purpose of living as a Biblical gentleman is anointing. What does it even mean to anoint? Its like one of those super spiritual words that no one outside the Abrahamic faiths uses. Transubstantiation, sanctification, tribulation and not far down the list of words least used by the average secular American: anoint.
It’s beautiful.
We’ll look at what this means, how Mary Magdalene anointed Jesus and forever tagged her name to the Gospel. As we tie this understanding of anointing to how we perform Biblical gentlemanly activities, we see why we go to the trouble of meeting other’s physical needs. Why give up your seat to anyone else if you don’t care whether they’re comfortable? Why open the door for someone if they probably won’t even acknowledge you? All these questions consider self as more important. The Gospel met us when we were wretched, poor and naked. I can’t imagine Jesus asking “Why die for people who would spit in my face?”
There are practical, traditional approaches to being a gentleman, that we will discuss from a historical and cultural perspective. We’ll use these traditional gestures to launch into a peek at how anointing others translates into life today, in the Information Age.
I’m really excited to share this with you and can’t wait to read your comments! Please take a moment and “Like” the BMP on Facebook. I hope you have an awesome day and enjoy this episode of the Biblical Manhood Podcast.

<itunes:summary>Welcome back and thank you for tuning into another episode of the Biblical Manhood Podcast! We have an interesting show for us to explore today. We will be continuing our look into the Biblical man mentioned as the “gatekeeper” or “doorholder” in Neh. 4:13. This time we will be talking about the weapon the gatekeeper holds in the hand opposite the one that works. Just a fair warning about today’s episode, it may get a tad controversial because we will be venturing into an area where many Christians differ greatly in the application of a practice known to the world as self defense. We will look at some text that may surprise you, no matter where you come down on the issue. Its a great thing for us to talk about in 2011, specially since the news about Osama caused something not seen in recent history: Christians rejoicing together with non-believers in the streets.
So how does a Biblical man go about defending himself? If he gets mugged, is he supposed to fight back? If his loved ones are in trouble or being subject to imminent harm, is he supposed to ask the mean man to stop? Does he run? Does he offer his wife and child as gifts to the mean man? Back in the Old Testament the rule was simple, but hard: eye for an eye. Jesus fulfilled that in the new testament by blessing the peace-makers and rebuking many to give up their cloaks if someone would take their belongings. Today, in 2011, men have changed quite a bit. We are so much more unsure of ourselves. Toughness and violence are frowned upon and discouraged in almost every instance and cause. The death of Osama reminded me that our emascualted culture still has some place for praising violence if all collectively think it was “deserved.”
Many times, men are led to make assumptions based on their observations of the world around them, rather than the truth inside them. Take sex, for example. The world around says to spread your seed and praises promiscuity. The truth is that sex was meant for a safe and most enjoyable framework: marriage. I’ve spoken with countless friends, believing and not, who wholeheartedly agree. I think we (modern men, and even Biblical men as a whole) have made a false assumption proposed by the world pertaining to violence and self defense. The world says that violence solves nothing and praises, here’s the keyword: tolerance. The truth is that violence is best exercised in the perfect justice of God. This, I think, is another concept even non-believers, though they may profess not to know God, understand. It is a part of this absolute truth, a common grace like the sun that shines on believers and non believers alike. It is very human to feel relief when justice is served. We don’t have to convince ourselves of it or be talked into feeling at peace when we can clearly see that justice was served.
But what form does that perfect justice of God take?
We will begin to look at a very deep question, close to the heart of defining Biblical manhood in today’s episode of the Biblical Manhood Podcast.

<itunes:summary>Thank you for returning to the Biblical Manhood Podcast! What an amazing week! God is so good. As for the Biblical Manhood Podcast, this episode, like the others, didn’t really come together until the very end of the writing portion. It is so crazy how the “not sure where this is going” turned “Glory to God ties it all together at the last minute” has happened for almost every episode. Hah! That’s really all there is to say!
In Genesis 2:15 (ESV), it says: “The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.” Mind you, man’s working was before anyone ever even ate an apple. Eve was barely a twinkle in God’s eye while Adam was working in the garden! God even created Eve because Adam needed help. All this is to say that man’s work predates sin. So, sinless work under God at the hands of man existed before man’s image fell. Adam’s work, like everything before sin, glorified God and probably satisfied Adam deeply. In light of this, I believe that there was a sinless way for a man to do work. But what does that look like today, in a fallen world?
A quote from Kay Stepkin says that “Your work is your identity.” Men today often do not glorify God with their work. Many seem to either idolize their work or neglect its significance all together. I know I am only starting to figure out what the work of my life is supposed to be. I used to see work as a menial means to a selfish end. After the month I’ve had recently, I’m starting to think much differently about the topic. I propose that  modern men’s idolization of and/or indifference toward work do not bear fruit in the kingdom, but have immense impact on the “Man Problem” (See Episode 1) facing our society and culture. The potential to have joy in work seems like foolishness to men, or many have a lame idea of what “joy in work” looks like. However, we will see today that the truly Biblical man has perpetually satisfying and immensely glorifying joy in his work.
Today we will continue our discussion of the GateKeepers as we saw them in Neh. 4:17. More specifically, we will look at the hand that works. Our culture places heavy emphasis on a man’s work. We’ve already explored a work ethic imbalance between men and women in their twenties. Men in my demographic make less than women who share the age group and demonstrate less drive to achieve. If we are so apathetic and indifferent about our identity in society that our work reflects it, then there should be some consequences. The Bible has many things to say about being idle, apathetic, lazy. None of the scripture with which I am familiar speaks approvingly of these qualities, especially for Biblical men.
We will talk about some of my work-related experiences and paradigm shift since starting the Biblical Manhood Podcast. We will look at some scripture that pertains directly, but discreetly, about a Biblical man’s work. The scripture we will read later hit me at the last minute when writing this episode. It wonderfully sums up all the points and experiences that led me to making this little expansion of the GateKeepers installment.  I hope you will find that you relate well to some of these experiences and are encouraged in your walk as a Biblical man. As always, please share your comments with me. Let me know if something I’ve said really hits home with what you’re going through and don’t be afraid to share your experience.
By delving the concept of work for the Biblical man, we will come to see that, as Biblical men, we are inseparable from our “work”. As Christians, our identity is found in Christ. Kay Stepkins quote is true and telling for Biblical men too. But if we do our “work” Biblically, we will glorify God and be satisfied in the ultimate source of joy.
Here’s an equation for all our Biblical theo[...]</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Welcome back to you and to me also! I’ve been very busy this past week with some great things to share in today’s episode. It is so cool to see how God works and have this podcast medium to share what I’ve learned and experienced in a way that you can enjoy also.
Today we will discuss the new page I added across the menu bar at the top of the website called “GateKeepers.” In this page you will find links to other Biblical men’s projects, work, ministries, etc. I knew I wanted to have a place for you to see  some other solid Biblically manly links but wanted to title it something other than just “Links.” Because that’s just boring! What we’re doing here at the Biblical Manhood Podcast is hardly boring.
We will explore who the Gatekeeper men were in the Bible, what they look like today as Biblical men and my recent experience working on the security team at the Passion conference in Ft. Worth. It should be an interesting episode and will allow us to explore more scripture in an applicable way for the Biblical man. I’m so glad you’ve come back to listen and I hope to benefit from your comments, so please leave them! Thank you so much and I hope you enjoy Episode 6 – GateKeepers.

<itunes:summary>Thank you so much for tuning in today! I think you’ll really enjoy this episode that absolutely wove itself. Today we will take a look back at the Biblical Manhood Podcast so far. I know, I know, you’re thinking, “But, Gabe… you’ve only done 4 episodes and you’re already doing a retrospective episode!?” Yes. Because this month has been very special to me and I’ve been very careful to see God’s handiwork in so many things.
Today we’ll open with an extended announcements portion to bring everyone up to speed on the latest technological developments, announce the www.biblicalmanhoodpodcast.com domain launch and other exciting events. I had also planned to have an interview for this landmark episode and release to iTunes, but set new dates for these two items. After the announcements, we will discuss some surprises and affirmations I’ve had on this open, paved road to forming the Biblical Manhood Podcast. Then we will end the discussion with a Bible verse (1 Tim. 6:11) that seems to speak a life stages guide over us in our journey on the road of Biblical manhood.
Thanks again for listening. Please leave comments. You can e-mail me now, at biblicalmanhoodpodcast@gmail.com. We have a Facebook page, although it isn’t pretty, and a Twitter username: twitter.com/BiblicalManhood. So friend us, follow us, and look for more content on those avenues. I’ve also added a tab for our first tool in the Biblical Manhood Podcast Toolbox: The Time Budget Calculator. This tool is for you to use as a reference in budgeting your time, like we discussed in Episode 4 – Time Budget Experiment.
Enjoy!

<itunes:summary>I’m so glad you’re tuned in to the Biblical Manhood Podcast today!
The title for today’s episode sounds a little odd. You’ve probably at least thought about doing this little exercise at some point in your life. I know I have, but shied away, never knowing why I didn’t just sit down and make a budget of my time. We made monthly financial budgets in school, but never a budget of our time. I probably just associated budgets with effort and made it one of the “I’ll get to it later” tasks. After taking a moment while riding the bus, just to see how I spent my time, I found some amazing, and sobering results.
Have you ever sat down and actually looked at how you spend your time? Where does each and every hour go? How much free time do you really have? How much time do we get to spend 1 on 1 with God? How much time is wasted?
I think the Biblical man is very conscious, protective and intentional with how he spends his time. This experiment made me realize that i was not conscious, barely protective and hardly intentional with how I spend my time. I hope you can find some applicable principles of time management for the modern Biblical man in today’s podcast.

I’m really glad you decided to listen today. This is the first interview of the Biblical Manhood Podcast and I look forward to having many more. There are a lot of Biblical men out there. Not as many as we might hope, but more than you might think. Many are hiding or so busy being Biblical men that they’re hard to focus on long enough to figure them out. Before you know it, they’re off to the next task. The gentleman we interview today is hiding… in plain sight. Consider this amazing quote from today’s guest, Matt Mitchell:

“You think its hard for us, the 20 and 30-somethings to get up in the morning? These guys are 80, 85, 88 years old and they’re getting up at 4 in the morning to drive here without fail every Tuesday and Thursday morning. When I started working here, they were the biggest inspiration to me. You talk about humbling? I wasn’t anything. So I’m on TV. Big deal. These guys have got it made. They’re retired. OK? They could be just living out the string and not worrying about it, they’ve put in their time. No. They’re up here doing amazing things. (They) inspired me to be more than I was. They passed a torch to me. My torch is to be an example in the sense that there is an intersection between faith, compassion and confidence that I think is a real benefit to any charitable endeavor. I think its ok to know who you are to the extent that God will lead you to do the best with your abilities. I’m a flawed human being… but the fact is, in any charitable endeavor, you have you use your gifts to benefit that mission.”
He will let us in on his life and give us a glimpse into the transformation from a “pre-adult,” “boy who can shave” to a man who lives by the Bible. We’ll hear about the early stages of God’s call in his life, how he got his torch, and he might hope to pass it on.
It’s obvious, after hearing him speak for 5 minutes, that he’s gifted. But we know gifts, talents and skills alone don’t make anyone very inspiring. Here’s a snapshot of what this man says about his skills:

“I wasn’t using my gifts for the greater good! I’ve got a strong right arm, Gabe, but I didn’t need to make eggs every day. What I do have, is a gift for public speaking. God has blessed each and every one of us with talents, and it is up to us to use them for his will and for his mission. I think that is to improve the world around us. I absolutely believe that.”
I’m so glad you’re here and can’t wait to start hearing feedback. It is almost irritating to hear such great stories, share some thoughts I presume to be deep and hear nothing for validation! But I don’t care! I’m loving it. It’s improving the world around me and I absolutely believe it. God bless.

<itunes:summary>In today’s show we will use the previously referenced sermons by Matt Carterand Mark Driscoll to explore an article in the Wall Street Journal by Kay Hymowitz.
The more I hear the phrase, “Biblical Manhood,” I’m reminded of this new term used on the news nowadays. Surely you’ve heard a talking head say the phrase, “Evangelical Christians.” It’s not enough to just say “Christians” anymore. Since when did sharing your faith become separate from being a Christian? It is really saying something when the media has noticed a difference between Christians who share their faith, and those who don’t. It is as if these new terms are trying to make distinctions between things that once were, and how they are now. These phrases are evidence that things have changed.
In light of that, think of our term “Biblical Manhood.” Sounds odd, don’t you think? Why did we make this term? At some point recently, the church decided to differentiate between men and men living according to the Bible. I think it became obvious that the modern archetypical man was becoming something very different than what he once was. Or was it because men in the churchweren’t even living up to the older, more traditional definition of a man? Now we have to further specify.
This is a big problem. What happened to men? Who are men now? Women ask themselves Kay’s question daily, “Where have all the good men gone?” Thegood men. The Biblical Men. Surely women have changed, too, and we will discuss that.
So today’s show is about exploring the change from the old style man to today’s man. We’ll set a basis of humility for ourselves to see the problem at its roots from a societal standpoint. Hopefully, we will expose a little bit of the new “man” still goofing off in ourselves and overpower him with the Biblical man. I know God has a lot of work to do on me in this.
Join me today in discussing the problem that helped us arrive at our resident phrase of Biblical Manhood.

<itunes:summary>Welcome to the first episode of the Biblical Manhood Podcast!
Since this is the first episode, and my first time recording one, I appreciate your patience with me as I learn and grow. This episode is just an introduction to the Biblical Manhood Podcast.
In today’s premier episode, “Who Has the Torch?” I tell a little bit about myself, the BMP, some vision casting and what this is going to be all about. Then we’ll discuss a few outlines of some Biblical men who’ve influenced me over the years and the “torches” they keep. We’ll get to hear them in interviews later on this season. Then I establish our first adventure together in asking for Anakin Niceguy of the original biblicalmanhood.blogspot.com blog to reveal himself. I’d love to have him on the show and get to know him.
I’m really excited that you’ve found this blog and podcast. I hope that you find the content and topics discussed here meaningful. Please comment and email me with any videos, movies, articles, conversations, whatever that pertains to the topic of Biblical Manhood that you’d like to discuss.
Since I spent a significant amount of time setting the groundwork for where we’ll be going in the show, I’ll give a brief synopsis here on the blog.
For about a year now, I’ve looked for a podcast related to Biblical Manhood and found nothing. Some blogs and single release podcasts on the topic exist, but I couldn’t ever find a dedicated podcast on Biblical Manhood. So, I just stuck with my Survival Podcast and the occasional Art of Manliness Podcast. Both are fabulous and I will model them somewhat in structure. But what I wanted was to be able to pick up my phone in the morning and listen to Biblical men’s real life narratives. Practical. Authentic. Intentional. So after waiting long enough for one to pop up, I decided to start my own. I couldn’t be more excited.
Many prominent, contemporary pastors have expounded in individual sermons or even sermon series. Pastors like Matt Carter, Matt Chandler, Mark Driscoll,Voddie Baucham and others delivered powerful messages revealing this new men problem. Mark Driscoll calls the problem, “boys who can shave.” These sermons convicted me deeply and led me to notice Godly men in my life in a much closer way.
This podcast will not be loaded with scripture, although it may be littered. This podcast will not be preachy, that’s what church is for. You won’t find much personal admonishment here – that’s what your accountability partner is for – although you may find yourself humbled by the lives of the guest speakers. This is also not a place for charity, that’s what the world is for.
The Biblical Manhood Podcast is for anyone interested in the topic, though it is geared toward the man striving to live according to the Bible. For the first few months, we will discuss topics and articles pertaining to Biblical Manhood as well as interviews with Biblical men who have impacted my life by witnessing the uniquely tuned Gospel acted out through them. You’ll hear their candid stories about how the Gospel has impacted their lives and others. In the future, I hope to get some more well-known Godly men and women on the podcast to hear their stories as well.
Thanks so much for visiting. Please subscribe to the blog and podcast. I want to invite you to walk down this road with me, just for a little while.</itunes:summary>
