Giants-Lions Wednesday injury report: OT Evan Neal back to practice; Kenny Golladay, Wan’Dale Robinson limited

Let’s look at the Giants’ initial injury list for Week 11

Rookie right tackle Evan Neal, out of the New York Giants lineup since suffering a sprained MCL Week 7 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, took a step toward returning on Wednesday when he returned to practice. Neal was a limited participant as the Giants began preparations for Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions.

There is no word at this point as to Neal’s potential availability this Sunday.

Wide receivers Kenny Golladay (hamstring) and Wan’Dale Robinson (hamstring) also both showed up the injury report. Both were limited. Golladay, of course, returned to action last week after missing four games with a knee injury. He was benched after a bad second-quarter drop. Robinson also missed four games earlier this season with a knee injury.

Safety Dane Belton, who was seen heading to the X-ray room after Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans, was limited with a clavicle injury. Belton missed much of training camp and the season opener after suffering a broken collarbone.

Shane Lemieux update

Guard Shane Lemieux, returning from surgery to repair a foot injury that included both turf toe and a fracture, is “improved from where he was last week,” according to head coach Brian Daboll.

The Giants designated Lemieux to return from injured reserve on Nov. 7. They have until Nov. 28, before the Week 13 game against the Washington Commanders, to add Lemieux to the 53-man roster.

Wednesday injury report

Giants

Did not participate

TE Daniel Bellinger (Eye)
DL Dexter Lawrence (Back/Rest)
OLB Kayvon Thibodeaux (Illness)

Limited participation

S Dane Belton (Clavicle)
WR Kenny Golladay (Hamstring)
OT Evan Neal (Knee)
WR Wan’Dale Robinson (Hamstring)
OLB Jihad Ward (Thumb)

Lions

Did not participate

OT Taylor Decker (Rest)
DL Josh Paschal (Knee)
C Frank Ragnow (Foot)
WR Josh Reynolds (Back)
RB Jamaal Williams (Illness)
WR Trinity Benson (Knee)

Limited participation

S DeShon Elliott (Concussion)

Kadarius Toney making big impression on Kansas City Chiefs

Kadarius Toney | Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

Travis Kelce says ‘I don’t know how he got out of that building’

Former New York Giants wide receiver Kadarius Toney has made an overwhelmingly positive impression on at least one of his new Kansas City Chiefs teammates.

“I don’t know how he got out of that building. I just don’t get it. I don’t get it one bit,” Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce said this week on the ‘New Heights’ podcast he does with his brother Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce. “I don’t even want to understand. I don’t want to know what happened over there. I am just extremely happy that [Chiefs GM] Brett Veach found a way yet again to get an unbelievable talented player in this building.”

The Giants, of course, dealt the 2021 first-round pick to the Chiefs for third- and sixth-round picks after a frustrating season-and-a-half that saw Toney suit up for only 12 of 24 games.

Kelce admitted to some initial trepidation when Toney joined Kansas City.

“He’s a great dude,” Kelce said. “I was blown away with how professional — honestly, when you get a trade like that you think something, there’s something that you have to weigh out or something that you have to ... ever since he’s been in the building it’s been, ‘man this dude’s smart. Man, this guy’s crazy athletic. Man, this guy has a lot of confidence.’ When you have a lot of confidence that means you understand what’s going on out there, you’re seeing things, you know how to attack it ... he’s just been a great teammate.”

Toney has six catches for 69 yards in two games with the Chiefs. Last Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars, he had four receptions for 59 yards and his first NFL touchdown, two rushing attempts for 33 yards, and a pair of punt returns for 11 yards

“Crazy athlete. Unbelievable player when he gets the ball in his hands. Obviously can run great routes,” Kelce said. “Happy that he got his first touchdown in the National Football League, it’s the first of many for sure.”

Complete coverage of this week’s game, from pre-game to post-game

The 7-2 New York Giants try to continue a once seemingly unfathomable playoff run on Sunday when they host the 3-6 Detroit Lions at MetLife Stadium. Game time is 1 p.m. ET.

The Giants are 3-point favorites, and are -155 on the moneyline. The over-under is 46. Odds, of course, are courtesy of DraftKings.

The Giants find themselves second in the NFC East, one game behind the Philadelphia Eagles. The Giants are also one game behind the Eagles and Minnesota Vikings for best record in the NFC.

The Lions enter the game having won two straight, defeating the Green Bay Packers, 15-9, and the Chicago Bears, 31-30.

Detroit head coach Dan Campbell was drafted by the Giants in 1999 and played for the team through the 2002 season.

Numbers to know

1,128 — Giants running back Saquon Barkley ranks second in the NFL with 1,128 scrimmage yards behind Miami’s WR Tyreek Hill (1,173). Barkley has over 100 scrimmage yards in six games this season. He also leads the NFL with 931 rushing yards.

145 — Giants quarterback Daniel Jones has completed 145 passes without throwing an interception - the NFL’s longest active streak. He has not thrown an interception since Week 3 against Dallas.

10 — The Giants defense has recorded 10 fumble recoveries in 2022 - tied for the most in the NFL this season. They have a total of 12 turnovers this season with a net differential of +4.

32:04 — The Giants rank fourth in the NFL in average time of possession, holding the ball for 32:04 per game.

Giants vs. Lions, Week 11: 5 things to watch this week

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

Can Saquon Barkley keep up the pace? That, and other thoughts on things to watch as the Giants seek their eighth victory

The New York Giants find themselves just one game out of first place in the NFC East, and one game from the best record in the NFC, following the Philadelphia Eagles’ loss to the Washington Commanders on Monday night.

The 7-2 Giants host the 3-6 Detroit Lions on Sunday in a game they need to win before their schedule ratchets up in difficulty. Five of the Giants’ final seven games are against NFC East opponents, and the Giants also have a road game against the 8-1 Minnesota Vikings.

Here are five things to watch this week.

Shouldering the load

Can Saquon Barkley keep up this pace? Coming off his 35-carry, 152-yard game last week against the Houston Texans, Barkley is averaging a career-high 25.2 touches per game. He has carried the ball 20 or more times in five of the last six games. Barkley leads the NFL in touches with 227, and is on pace for 429. That would blow away his career-high of 352 touches in 2018. He leads the league in rushing yards with 931, and rushing yards per game (103.4).

Can the 25-year-old keep carrying such a heavy load? Can he stay healthy if head coach Brian Daboll and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka continue asking him to do so much?

Barkley said after Sunday’s game that it was “really fun” to carry such a heavy workload.

“I know that’s the conversation of how many carries or how many touches I had but it’s my job to be a pro, go in there, get in the cold tub, get in the hot tub and get ready for next week,” Barkley said.

The 30-point barrier

We talk a lot about whether or not the way the Giants are playing — run-heavy offense, quality defense, taking advantage of opponents’ mistakes to win close games late — is sustainable.

The Giants have neither scored nor allowed 30 points in a game this season. In fact, the Giants are riding a streak of 37 consecutive games during which they have not reached the 30-point mark on offense. The last time they did was in a 37-34 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Oct. 1, 2020.

Daboll said “I don’t know” when asked this week if the Giants could win if they were forced out of their offensive comfort zone, forced to open things up, rely on the passing game, and take more risks.

Detroit is a team capable of making the Giants find out.

The Lions are 3-6, but they are ninth in the league in scoring at 24.3 points per game. The Giants are 22nd at 20.8. The Lions are sixth in the league in yards per game (371.2). The Giants are 23rd (325.8). Detroit has scored more than 30 points four times this season, with a high of 45 in a 48-45 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

The Lions, eighth in the league in time between offensive plays (27.6 seconds) want to go fast. The Giants, 24th at 30.0 seconds between snaps, want to go fairly slow.

The Giants have largely dictated the terms of how their games have been played this season. Can they do so again on Sunday?

Aidan and Kayvon

Edge defender Aidan Hutchinson was drafted No. 2 overall by the Lions. Kayvon Thibodeaux was drafted No. 5 by the Giants. In the buildup to a draft that saw the Jacksonville Jaguars take edge defender Travon Walker No. 1 overall, the pre-draft debate over who was the best edge rusher was often between Hutchinson and Thibodeaux.

Thibodeaux has been good for the Giants. To this point, though, Hutchinson has been the more productive player. Here are some of the numbers — with the caveat that Hutchinson has played nine games while Thibodeaux has played in only seven.

Sacks — Hutchinson 5.5; Thibodeaux 1
QB hits — Hutchinson 10; Thibodeaux 3
Total pressures — Hutchinson 15; Thibodeaux 7
Passes defensed — Thibodeaux 3; Hutchinson 1
Forced fumbles — Thibodeaux 1; Hutchinson 0
Tackles for loss — Hutchinson 4; Thibodeaux 0
Pass rush productivity (per Pro Football Focus) — Hutchinson has a sack, hit or hurry on 6.1 percent of pass-rushing snaps; Thibodeaux on 4.5 percent of snaps
Overall PFF grade — Hutchinson 66.8; Thibodeaux 65.3

Two things of note to keep in mind when comparing these numbers. Hutchinson has rushed the passer 278 times (96.2 percent of pass plays). Thibodeaux has rushed the passer 199 times (86.1 percent of the pass plays he has been on the field for).

I am not drawing any conclusions about which player is better halfway through their rookie seasons. I just thought that with both on the field Sunday it was a noteworthy comparison, and something to watch.

What will happen with Kenny Golladay?

The Giants benched wide receiver Kenny Golladay last Sunday after an awful dropped pass. Will he get another chance this week? Will he stand on the sideline and watch Darius Slayton, Isaiah Hodgins, and Wan’Dale Robinson play? Could Golladay and his four-year, $72-million contract be inactive against the Lions, the team he played for before becoming a Giant?

I’m interested in seeing if the Giants continue to give Golladay chances, or if they show an inclination this week to simply move on to players who are contributing more.

Special teams

I have a a couple of questions here.

First, will the Giants continue with cornerback Adoree’ Jackson as their primary punt returner. Jackson, handling punt returns for the first time since 2019 when he was with the Tennessee Titans, fielded all of his chances cleanly. He had just two yards on two attempted returns, though.

Second, I am beginning to wonder if punter Jamie Gillan could be on shaky ground as the Giants push toward a playoff berth. Gillan had a rough game against the Texans, and has been inconsistent.

Gillan is 31st in the NFL out of 32 punters with 15.7 percent of his punts going for touchbacks. He is 27th in kicks downed inside the 20-yard line at 28.2 percent. Gillan’s six touchbacks is tied with Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ rookie punter Jake Camarda for most in the league.

The Giants are 20th in the league in net yards per punt attempt at 40.9, with Gillan’s struggles to place the ball at times an issue.

With the Giants trying to play a conservative, grind-it-out style field position is a huge element of being successful that way. might Gillan’s inconsistency lead the Giants to look elsewhere?

What does the tape tell us about the Giants’ win over Houston?

The New York Giants came out of their bye week swinging, topping the Houston Texans 24-16. The Giants improved to 7-2 on the season, cementing their best start since the 2008 season.

We all saw what happened as the game unfolded. But as always, Chris and Nick went back to the All-22 tape to not just see what happened, but why. So what did the tape reveal about the Giants’ seventh win of the season?

In this podcast

What did we see from the offense (hint: LOTS of running)

What do we like about the Giants’ jumbo packages?

About the wide receivers...

Why is the defense playing so well?

Are there any concerns going forward?

New York Giants headlines for Wednesday

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

Could the Odell Beckham Jr. sweepstakes be a “coin flip” between the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys. A Beckham confidante thinks so.

“If I’m a betting man right now,” Nelson Stewart, Odell’s high school told The New York Post. “I’d flip a coin between New York and Dallas. It’s tight. But of all the teams I’ve heard about, the one that really resonates a little bit more is New York. And you can certainly say the Giants have the most intrigue with Odell’s old coach.”

When Brian Daboll was the Bills’ offensive coordinator last season, he once called 32 straight plays to open a game without a single handoff to a running back. Buffalo’s running backs finished that 33-27 overtime loss to the Buccaneers with seven carries. Quarterback Josh Allen had 54 pass attempts.

But Daboll is a coach who favors winning games, so he has adapted in his first season as Giants head coach. The Giants’ offensive identity this season has been run, run and run some more. And it’s working. The Giants had 47 carries, including a career-high 35 for running back Saquon Barkley, in Sunday’s win over the Texans.

New York Taking Giant Steps on Offense in Brian Daboll’s First Year | The 33rd Team

Charles Davis explains that the New York Giants’ offense has taken major steps forward this season with the resurrection of Saquon Barkley and the improvements made by Daniel Jones. Mix the offense with a strong defense, and you get a 7-2 record in rookie head coach Brian Daboll’s first season.

RB Saquon Barkley marvels at WR Darius Slayton’s speed

Inside the Numbers: Saquon Barkley, Daniel Jones set the pace | Giants.com

Jones is one of four quarterbacks with three games this season in which they completed at least 76 percent of their passes (minimum 15 attempts). Seattle’s Geno Smith has four such games and Cleveland’s Jacoby Brissett, Jacksonville’s Trevor Lawrence and Jones each have three.

Jones has not thrown an interception since the Giants’ final offensive play in the loss to Dallas on Sept. 26. He has played six games and thrown 145 passes without one finding its way into an opponent’s hands. Jones’ 145 passes without an interception is the longest active streak in the NFL.

Giants have a ‘great problem’ in the most unexpected place | New York Post

So, it was remarkable in Sunday’s win against the Texans to see the Giants deploy eight offensive linemen on five short-yardage power-run plays. Even more remarkable that two of last season’s starters (Matt Peart and Nick Gates) joined Jack Anderson as the three substitutes off the bench. And most remarkable of all to envision that within a couple weeks the Giants could have a roster crunch created by 11 experienced linemen.

Giants DT Dexter Lawrence. One of the biggest reasons Wink Martindale has been able to call games freely as the defensive coordinator for the upstart Giants, Lawrence has been solid for a while but especially disruptive in 2022. No QB is safe opposite his power.

McCourty said he wasn’t surprised by Daboll’s success and referenced Daboll’s reputation as “a player’s guy” and comments from Giants safety Xavier McKinney about things being “different from when Judge was there.”

Asked about this comments, McCourty said he was trying to highlight the difference in personalities between Daboll and Judge, nothing more. He admitted he probably shouldn’t have mentioned Judge by name and essentially chalked it up to a TV rookie mistake.

New York Giants players and their opponents have been complaining for years about the surface at MetLife Stadium. Two Giants players in particular — safeties Landon Collins and Julian Love — tweeted their objections to playing on turf on Saturday afternoon after NFLPA president J.C. Tretter released a statement urging the five NFL venues that use ‘slit film’ turf surfaces.

DJ Chark, Jameson Williams and Quintez Cephus are all stashed on injured lists, while Josh Reynolds hasn’t played the last two weeks because of a back injury. Amon-Ra St. Brown was shaken up on the game-winning touchdown drive, a worrying sign for a guy who has dealt with a high ankle sprain this season. All the injuries forced the Lions to re-sign Trinity Benson off Denver’s practice squad, who also left the game with an injury.

Kadarius Toney was 20.4 yards away from the nearest defender when the pass arrived on his first career TD, the most target separation on a TD reception in the Next Gen Stats era (since 2016).

The lawsuit alleges negligence in the placement of mats covering cords and cables that led to the feed for the league’s replay monitor. Patrick alleges that his foot rolled on one of the mats as he tried not to slam into the NFL’s “green hat” TV liaison. Patrick’s complaint also contends that ownership of the venue owed a duty of care to those with access to the field, and that ownership allowed an unsafe condition to exist on those premises.

Odell Beckham rumors: New York Giants remain at forefront of Beckham sweepstakes

Many Giants fans are praying for a return by Odell Beckham Jr. | Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images

Report says Beckham’s choice could be ‘coin flip’ between Giants and Cowboys

Could the Odell Beckham Jr. sweepstakes be a “coin flip” between the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys. A Beckham confidante thinks so.

“If I’m a betting man right now,” (Nelson) Stewart told The Post, “I’d flip a coin between New York and Dallas. It’s tight. But of all the teams I’ve heard about, the one that really resonates a little bit more is New York.

“And you can certainly say the Giants have the most intrigue with Odell’s old coach.”

Stewart was Beckham’s high school coach, and Ian O’Connor of the New York Post describes Stewart as “a reliable mentor and advocate” for Beckham who “understands the receiver like few others in his orbit.”

Beckham was the Giants’ first-round pick in 2014 and rocketed to stardom in New York with record-setting numbers, highlight-reel catches, and Pro Bowl appearances in his first three seasons.

Things eventually soured in New York, and the Giants traded him to the Cleveland Browns after the 2018 season.

Beckham is currently rehabbing from a torn ACL suffered while playing for the Los Angeles Rams in last season’s Super Bowl. He is expected to be cleared soon, but a report from CBS Sports indicated that it could be a few more weeks before Beckham is ready to play.

CBS also said that the Green Bay Packers, Buffalo Bills, Kansas City Chiefs, and the Rams have joined the Giants and Cowboys in expressing some level of interest in Beckham.

CBS said this about what the 30-year-old Beckham might be looking for:

The prevailing belief is that Beckham wants a multi-year contract on a team that is both contending now and will in the future. A cold-weather city isn’t a no-go, but he’d prefer warmer weather and wants a city or brand with a big platform.

“Many teams will have to work some [salary cap] maneuvers to get him on board,” one team executive told CBS Sports.

Despite their surprising 7-2 record, the Giants are 30th in the NFL in passing yards and 22nd in points per game. Their leading wide receiver, Darius Slayton, did not catch a pass until Week 4.

Last Sunday against the Houston Texans, the Giants threw the ball only 17 times while running it 46 times, with Saquon Barkley getting a career-high 35 carries.

Giants quarterback Daniel Jones is having an efficient season, with career bests in quarterback rating (92.7), completion percentage (65.8), and interception percentage (0.8). Still, Jones has thrown for 200 or more yards only twice in nine games and there are questions about whether or not the Giants can succeed in games where they are forced to rely mostly on the passing attack.

Even head coach Brian Daboll is not sure what would happen in such a circumstance, understandable since the Giants have thus far managed to avoid needing to find out.

“I don’t know,” Daboll said. “You practice that each week. You’re ready, and you try to be as ready as you can in every situation. I think you just take each game as they come, and coach and play the way you need to play for that week.”

The Giants have lost Sterling Shepard for the season to a knee injury, traded Kadarius Toney to the Kansas City Chiefs, and seen Kenny Golladay once again disappoint.

Even at 30 and with a pair of torn ACLs in recent years and the fractured ankle he suffered in 2017 with the Giants, Beckham would immediately be the Giants’ most talented wide receiver.

GM Joe Schoen said during the bye week that he would have interest in Beckham.

“Obviously, he’s been a good player. He’s a guy we would consider and talk to when he’s healthy,” Schoen said. “If a player is healthy and they would help us win football games, we would pursue them if they fit what we’re looking for.”

What the players think

Giants’ star running back Saquon Barkley said recently he would like to see Beckham join the Giants:

“He know how I feel. He knows how we feel in this locker room,” Barkley said. “He’s a heckuva player.

“He’s a special player, and he’s still got a lot left in the tank. He’s Odell. When he’s healthy, one of the best players in the league. Why wouldn’t anybody want him?”

On WFAN Sports Radio, Giants’ safety Julian addressed the Beckham chatter this way:

“I think for sure you want to look at anybody, I know Joe Schoen and (Brian Daboll) and all the upstairs guys look at fits, potential fits. He obviously has a relationship with a lot of people in the building, but I’m not sure what the deal with that is. I’m not even sure if he’s able to play this year. All that stuff goes into (it), but yeah, that’s an upstairs decision,” Love said. “You want to see us have success and bring in guys who can help, no doubt, but also we can’t bank on short-term success. We’ve got to still build for our future.

“I think – what I’ve heard in this building, and I’ve obviously just been in this building, thankfully – is that you really appreciate stuff after it’s gone. You really appreciate being in this Giants building after you’re not anymore. The people, the community, yeah everybody has passion and it’s high-pressure, but they do it right. In the building, you just get treated a certain way. It’s one of the founding fathers of the league, the New York Giants are. And so I think that goes into effect, so yeah, I know in his heart realizes kind of what he had here, I’m sure, so I think that’s kind of what’s at play here.”

Are Beckham and the Giants really a match?

This is the difficult part.

This year’s Giants team could use a top-tier talent at wide receiver. Is Beckham, at his age and after all of the injuries he has suffered, still in that class? He averaged 108.8 yards receiving per game as a Giants’ rookie in 2014. He has, though, seen his production decline steadily over the years. With the Browns and Rams last season, he averaged a career-low 38.4 yards receiving per game. His 11.3 yards per reception average was also a career low.

How good is Beckham at this point in his career? The only way to really know is to get him on the field and find out.

Does Beckham really want to return to New York? Does he really see the Giants as a contending team that can get him back to the Super Bowl in the next couple of years? Or, does Beckham just want to keep the idea of returning to the Giants alive as a bargaining chip to get more out of the Cowboys or someone else?

Can the Giants even make a Beckham deal work financially?

Most reports have indicated that Beckham wants a multi-year deal. Over The Cap says the Giants currently have just $2.261 million in 2022 salary cap space. Beckham is almost certainly not signing a veteran minimum deal for just the remainder of this season.

That means the Giants would have to find some mechanism to squeeze a Beckham deal in this season, and probably kick substantial money down the road. Schoen has been averse to doing that to this point. Would he really do it for Beckham?

No one really knows the answers to these questions. The only thing we do know is that it seems likely we will find out where Beckham will land in the next week or two.
