Mendel University in Brno, Czech Republic produces compost of the highest quality - without using a grinder

Mendel University in Brno is the oldest independent specialized university in the Czech Republic. Its history dates back to 1864 when the first attempts were made to found an agricultural university. Today it has five different faculties; AgriSciences, Forestry and Wood Technology, Horticulture, Business and Administration and Regional Development and International Studies.

In November 2015 the company Elkoplast, partner and reseller of Big Hanna, placed a Big Hanna model T120 on the Mendel University premises to serve he university’s canteen. The canteen serves meals to students, university employees as well as the public and sits 250 guests. Each day the kitchen produce between 60-80 kilos of left overs and other organic waste which is put into the Big Hanna and turned into compost.

The Big Hanna is installed adjacent to the kitchen under a protective roof and the kitchen staff put waste here five days a week. The T120 is equipped with a screw conveyor to feed the waste into the composter and a 40L container where the finished compost is being kept to stabilize and mature. A user friendly touch screen panel with internet connection and an operating program monitor the composters internal process and temperature in real time and make it easy to survey.

Here is a picture that shows the rotating cylinder and how the movement feed the compost towards the outlet and then into the container. The space between the outlet and container should always be completely sealed, but here we want to show how it actually works.

This is how the compost from the Mendel University looks like. This model has no grinder since the waste is either finely chopped or consist of cooked food. Instead the bacteria do all the job and do it well, as you can see the compost is of very high quality.

Seborga - a small town with a large environmental commitment

Seborga is a small municipality in the Liguria region located in the northwest part of Italy, right on the French border. Liguria, like many other Italian regions, has been struggling with a number of difficult issues surrounding waste management and long transports. But there are also success stories, like the one in Seborga. The small municipality with 320 residents has since 2013 completely rearranged its waste management, and by 2015 they managed to recycle as much as 72% of their organic waste. It was four times as much as the year before and the positive trend seem to continue.

Switching to a sustainable system

By installing a Big Hanna T120 and investing in local composting Seborga chose to take their environmental concern and commitment seriously and begin a change over of its entire waste management. The transition began in 2013, and relatively soon the municipality managed to take care of all their organic waste and thus avoid all their former costs for transportation and disposal. Instead they reduced their total waste management costs and gained a valuable by-product they use in municipal green areas.

Pioneers in Liguria

Enrico Ilariuzzi, Mayor of Seborga, is very pleased with the result of the change towards a more sustainable system.

- We made careful calculations and work plans during several years and that work has led us both to decreasing costs and to lower fees. Furthermore, we have achieved important results in terms of recycling and sustainability.

As the mayor's assistant secretary, Lara Ficarra has followed the project closely. She has been responsible for following up the project and for quality checks and has only good things to say about the quality of the project and about the produced compost.

- We are on the right track. So far, Seborga is the first municipality in Liguria that have implemented local composting of all the local organic waste, and to carry it out with the Big Hanna T120 has given us excellent results.

Unfortunately, she has seen that the regional and national cuts at subsidies and other financial incentives has made it more difficult for municipals that want to change their waste management. But the cuts have also led to a new approach and the aim to optimize resources. As the economy strengthens in Italy and Europe, she believes that more regions and municipalities will be able to prioritize the issues concerning sustainability and recycling.

The positive results in Seborga have now also led to a shift to differentiated waste fees in the municipality. This is yet another positive step towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly waste management for the residents in the municipality.

Local composting - an environmentally friendly and cost effective solution for the Puglia region

Puglia is a region situated at the far southeast part of Italy. During the years 2007-2013 a national and regional funding program was launched to facilitate for the different municipalities to comply with the targets for recycling of organic waste. Part of the funding concerns the upgrading and modernization of waste facilities; and so far over 15 municipalities have applied for funding to build facilities for local composting.

Installation and supervision by Achab Group

Up until January 2017, seven of the municipalities have had their facilities completed. The construction and installation work is done by the Achab Group, the Italian distributor for Big Hanna. They are responsible for building the installation site as well as the foundation and weather protection, they also install the electronics and build storage modules for the compost. It is also the Achab Group who deliver and install the composting machine and the Biofilter from Big Hanna as well as handle all information and implementation concerning the waste collection and composting process.

An optimal solution

Local collection of the organic waste and composting in a joint composting machine has proven to be the optimal solution for these small municipalities with a population of 800 up to 12 000 inhabitants. Many of them are remotely located with long transports to the nearest landfill as a result. The new system with composting machines now make it possible for these communities to take care of all their organic waste in an environmentally friendly and sustainable way.

Safe and odour free process

The composting machine is installed with a larger hopper with a screw conveyor to facilitate the loading. The larger hopper is also equipped with a weighing equipment so that the municipalities can control the amount of food waste that is loaded. An Internet connection and a display shows constant information about the continuous process. The only emissions are water vapour and carbon dioxide. Thanks to the effective Biofilter the whole process is completely odourless.

The composting machine rotates every hour to aerate the material and by adding sawdust the material gets drier which leads to effective decomposing. After approximately 90 days, the waste is reduced by 80-85% and broken down into compost, and let out at the end of the machine. The compost is then put into wooden boxes to stabilize, mature and become a fully usable fertilizer. A certain amount of compost may be obtained free of charge by residents while the rest are spread in municipal parks and plantations.

Cost reduction

There are so far successful projects in seven municipalities: Anzano di Puglia, Sant'Agata di Puglia, Panni, Ugento, Miggiano, Montesano Salentino and Lizzanello; all of them funded by the Puglia region. The aim is to significantly reduce the cost of organic waste management that up until the changeover represented 50% of the total waste cost.

Each composting facility can accommodate 130 tons of organic waste per year; waste that previously had to be transported and handled at centrally located landfills. The conversion to local composting is one important action by the region to reduce its overall environmental impact, creating a waste cycle and start applying the principles of a circular economy.

Big Hanna at Whitmuir Organic Farm - new project hitting Scottish Government’s world leading food waste targets

Through mutual engagement and cooperation Whitmuir Farm and two local schools have succeeded to reduce the school canteen waste far above government waste targets.

A compost and a project

Whitmuir Farm is a working organic farm in West Linton just south of Edinburgh in Scotland. In October 2015 a Big Hanna T75 was installed to help reduce the farms organic waste and turn it into fertilising soil. During the same month they launched the 2000m2" project, their first rural food waste collection project, funded by Climate Challenge Fund.

Successful reduction

The project engaged a large number of citizens and included two nearby primary schools, West Linton Primary and Newlands School. They were invited to Whitmuir Farm to learn about organic farming, sustainable food production and how to reduce waste. In 2016 the two schools became part of the next level, the "2000m2 Think Global, Eat Local" project with the ambition to reduce waste at the school canteen. The pupils weighed all food waste and divided them into different fractions to highlight what kinds of food that were being thrown away, and how much. Then they launched a campaign to reduce the amount. The result beat all expectations as the pupils reduced the waste by 33 % and managed to surpass the government waste target set for the next decade. Now the schools get visits from both local politicians as well as the organisation Zero Waste Scotland and presented as an inspiration to others.

Local action makes a difference

In all countries in Europe the waste problem is being noticed and the European Commission adopted an ambitious plan for a common waste target in the EU; amongst others a target for recycling 65% of municipal waste and a to reduce landfill to a maximum of 10% of municipal waste by 2030. To decrease the amount of edible food that goes to waste is on of the target issues. In Scotland 600 000 tonnes of food and drink end up in the trash instead of getting eaten - every year. The school project shows what a difference awareness can make. The pupils are now aiming at reducing the avoidable waste at home by 25%.

Sustainability in the Scottish Highlands with Big Hanna

In 2010 Glenmore Lodge installed a Big Hanna. Six years later we revisit to take a look at how Big Hanna is doing and what the staff think about composting. Has everything worked out, and is composting really as easy as we claimed it would be?

Glenmore Lodge is situated in Cairngorms National Park in the Scottish Highlands, 40 miles (app 65 km) southeast of Inverness. It is Scotland’s National Outdoor Training Centre and offers a wide range of outdoor training and qualifying courses for both individuals and professional instructors. At Glenmore Lodge visitors can take part in a whole range of different outdoor disciplines such as mountaineering, mountain biking, skiing, kayaking and canoeing with experienced instructors. During its 60 year long operation it’s won an international reputation both for the inspiring outdoor activities but also for its magnificent surroundings. The Cairngorms National Park enjoys more than 55 mountains over 3000 ft (900 m) and a large number of rivers and lochs. Glenmore Lodge is located in the midst of it all with an immediate access to the outdoors.

Inspired by nature

As well as courses Glenmore Lodge also offers accommodation, meeting rooms, climbing wall, gym and has a bar which is open to the public serving bar meals seven days a week, 50 weeks of the year. Each year they welcome over 45000 visitors and the business generates its fair share of waste. It’s not too far fetched to believe that the beautiful location in this wilderness inspired the change in waste management. The actual process began in December 2008 when Bob Kinnaird was appointed as new Principal. He made it clear that he had a vision where Glenmore Lodge would become waste neutral. One of the first steps towards this goal was without question to look at how to deal with the food waste.

The process begins

Kirsty Murfitt, Environmental Coordinator at Glenmore Lodge took on the task of investigating different solutions. She began with carrying out a two week long waste audit where all food waste from the kitchen and dining room was measured. In the beginning the staff were very sceptical at being asked to weigh all the waste, but much of that changed during the audit. “It became visible to all of us that we threw away a lot of food”, says Kirsty Murfitt. “Each day generated around 30 kilos of waste because we prepared too much food, guests not eating all they took and from food going off. This created an eagerness to change our habits and a willingness to recycle the actual waste”.

How to do it

The next step was to investigate different composters and how they worked. A process lasting more than year resulted in the decision to buy a Big Hanna T120.

Up until now Glenmore Lodge had used six 1200 liter bins for all its waste which were collected and taken to landfill. In the highlands it is a struggle to recycle many types of waste that other parts of the UK can. Most waste unfortunately finds its way to landfill so a change towards a more sustainable waste management system was very appealing explains Kirsty Murfitt. However, she was a bit worried if the staff would buy into the idea.

“Back then no one understood how it all worked and we all had concerns: would maintenance be difficult and time consuming, would there be a smell during the process, would it attract rats or other vermin..?”

Big Hanna arrives

In November 2010 Big Hanna arrived, because of bad weather and too much snow the machine was started up in January. A small group of people started using the machine and the waste was separated in the kitchen. It was an issue to keep down the size of food going in in the beginning, Kirsty recalls with a laugh.

“If you throw in a whole cabbage or bread roll it won’t go down in size or compost… It was also important to keep temperature and moisture at the right level, but we got clear advice and began slow with little material and plenty of sawdust. We also got really good feedback from the display. It was all quite simple actually, as soon as we got it up to the right temperature it just worked”.

Since then Big Hanna has worked really well. Apart from a broken wheel bracket that they fixed themselves the machine has run steadily with a minimum of management other than an occasional fuse.

No more landfill

Nowadays no food waste goes to landfill, it all goes into Hanna. Earlier on regulations made it impossible to compost meat. That changed, and since the kitchen installed a macerator dewatering device that cuts all meat into small pieces, all food waste is composted.
“Now that we can put everything into Big Hanna maintenance is much easier” says Kirsty. “It´s cleaner too, and just think of the number of bins we no longer need to get emptied. Big Hanna has enabled us to comply with legislation brought in to deal with the separation and disposal of food waste".
Looking back this process has been a successful change towards sustainability. During the first waste audit in November 2009 the waste averaged at 221KG, where 147KG was non meat waste. Six months later many old habits were changed and the waste reduced to 184KG, with 110KG non meat waste. Through conscious work the amount of waste have reduced continuously and the dewatering process reduced the weight even more. Today Glenmore Lodge puts approximately 55 kg of dewatered waste into Hanna each week; the material is reduced by 85-90 % which results in around 30 kilos of compost per month. “The compost that comes out now is lovely and fine and we can use all of it. That’s a benefit to us since it’s still considered as waste and can´t leave our grounds. We spread it on our lawns or flowerbeds. I can´t say that I´ve seen any great changes in the flourishing, but nothing grows very well up here in the highlands”.

A sustainable future

Composting has been a valuable experience in many ways she concludes, maybe not in making a financial profit but it is certainly beneficial for the environment. And nowadays Glenmore Lodge aim to recycle as much as possible; even old furniture, mattresses and other useful things that can be recycled by other people.

So far composting is in its early stage with just a few other machines in Scotland. Over the years Glenmore Lodge has had a lot of visitors who have wanted to learn from their experience, and Kirsty welcomes them all.

“Seeing Big Hanna and talking to us who use her will make a big difference for the visitor. I think many people believe it takes a lot of time and technical knowhow to use the machine and therefore don’t want to investigate composting further, but visiting Big Hanna will change that picture”.

Successful local composting in Casalbuono

In September 2016 another Big Hanna was inaugurated in Italy. Our latest composting project is situated in Casalbuono, a small town in the Province of Salerno in the south west part of Italy. As always, our Italian partner Achab Group managed the installation and supervised the inauguration.

Negative effects from organic waste

Casalbuono, is a provincial town of 1,230 inhabitants and its innovative municipal government took on a new approach to reduce the waste treatment costs. Since the region was devoid of local composting facilities the municipalities have been forced to transport all its organic waste at very high costs and negative environmental effects. A change was needed and the municipal decided to start up a local composting project.

Adopted local composting

An extensive communication campaign was implemented throughout the municipality to make citizens aware of the project objectives. It was also important to provide the entire community with information on home composting and how to separate the waste correctly. In order to succeed the municipal organised educational workshops and classes on composting at the local primary school. The city then adopted a municipal regulation where their citizens signed an agreement to practice local composting.

The result was immediate, their transport costs are down to zero and all citizens benefit from a 10 % discount on waste taxes.

Innovative solution that reduce costs

Casalbuono invested in a Big Hanna T240. The compost machine is equipped with an efficient bio filter to reduce the odours that occur during the decomposition. It loads between 400-1200 kilos each week and will allow the town to manage all its on-site organic waste. The waste is being separated in the households and then collected by the municipal.

– It 's been a long process, but in the end and with great determination we were able to realize this project with local composting, says Attilio Romano, the Mayor of Casalbuono. This new waste management system will allow both economic and environmental benefits. Small towns like ours can’t afford high operating costs and we welcome innovative solutions that allow a sustainable waste management.
The compost will turn into nutritious fertilizers and be reused in the communal gardens and flower beds.

The City of Casalbuono is the second town in the region to implement local composting after The City of Cuccaro Vetere with 580 inhabitants.

Skövdebostäder chose Big Hanna for their new residential area

The Swedish municipal real estate company Skövde-bostäder is constructing a new ecological residential area in Aspö, beautifully located northwest of the city Skövde in the southwest part of Sweden. The area represents a unique project with the ambition to create an environmentally profiled residential area with focus on the interaction between people and nature. The concept includes local composting and Skövde-bostäder chose a Big Hanna T120 to compost the residents' food waste.

The inauguration was held in September 2016 by representatives from both Skövde-bostäder and the construction company Peab. Cecilia Ek represented Big Hanna and demonstrated the compost machine Big Hanna T120 and how the compost process works during progress.

A residential area in harmony with nature

The residential project Aspö Eko-logi was started in February 2015 and the first tenants moved in during June 2016. The whole area is estimated to be fully built by 2018 at the earliest. When it´s fully inhabited it will consist of seven residential buildings varying in sizes and the amount of floors. The municipal real estate owner Skövde-bostäder already maintained activities at a municipal center, Aspögården, on the premises. This center will continue to develop in harmony with the residential area with the idea that future residents will be able to take part in the activities in different ways.

Big Hanna an important part of the environmental profile

Aspö Eko-logi was designed by Micael Ekberg at Abako Architects and built by the construction firm Peab. The residential area has a strong environmental profile with a number of details that have been well thought through. The facades will to a high extent be built by natural materials and harmonize with the surroundings. Energy consumption and energy recovery are both important issues; the buildings are therefor constructed with passive house technology and solar power plants will ad to the production of hot water and electricity. Energy will be recovered from waste water, and rain water will be collected and used to water the communal gardens and kitchen garden.
The Landscape architect John Tizzard designed the gardens and planned many practical details such as fruit trees and -bushes, berries and edible plants that can be used for food or dessert. The household waste will be loaded into the Big Hanna T120 and turned into compost which will fertilise the area's many gardens. It´s all part of a recycling system that aim to create the smallest possible environmental impact.

Big interest for local composting

Big Hanna T120 was installed during the summer and on the opening day Cecilia Ek from Big Hanna was present to demonstrate its function to many interested visitors. T120 will be producing an estimated 50-100 liters of nutritious soil fertiliser each week and thus be an important part of the neighbourhoods environmental work and profile.

Chef Rune Kalf Hansen cooked organic food

Chef Rune Kalf Hansen were present during the whole day. As well as cooking tasty organic food for all the guests he gave inspiring tips about environmentally conscious living; such as how to cook and how to grow organic food in the communal organic garden.

As the inauguration day turned into evening the sun set beautifully on Big Hanna and the residential area Aspö Eko-logi.

Bassiano - medieval village choose a sustainable system

Italy is getting more and more determined to implement a more sustainable waste management and local composting is one important step on the way. In June 2016 another Big Hanna was installed in Bassiano, a small mountain village 25 miles southwest of Rome.

Picturesque mountain village

Bassiano is a beautiful mountain village at 562 meters above sea level. The tiny village climbs around the hill with a lovely view over the surrounding landscape. A large part of the old curtain wall still remains and a walk through the narrow alleys takes the visitor back to medieval times. In one of the five old churches in the village a cave was recently found with old frescoes dating back to the year 1005. Apart from its historical inheritance Bassiano is famous for its prosciutto. It is prepared using strictly natural and traditional methods and stands out because of the seasoning: a dressing of garlic, pepper and white wine, followed by a 17-18 months long period of dry-curing. The end result is excellent, so much so that the inhabitants of Bassiano dedicate a festival to their ham: the Ham Festival is held once a year on the last Sunday of July. Bassiano was founded in 880 and has a total of 1600 inhabitants.

Local composting

To create a sustainable waste management the municipality began to build a system for local composting during 2016 and chose to invest in a Big Hanna T240.

The compost machine can load between 400-1200 kilos of organic waste each week and is equipped with an efficient biofilter to reduce the odours that occur during the decomposition. The municipality will also begin to collect food waste from the local households and load it into the Big Hanna T240.

Instead of costly and time consuming transports the organic waste will now be recycled and reused as a natural fertilizer. The ambition is that all compost will be used in the local area.

Big Hanna T240 was installed at the waste collection site in Bassiano on June 21, 2016. The installation went very well and the machine is up and running. In 6 to 10 weeks the waste will be turned into valuable compost.

Kanyon Shopping Mall in Istanbul installed a Big Hanna

Kanyon Shopping Mall is a multi-purpose complex located on the Büyükdere Avenue in the Levent business district of Istanbul, Turkey. It houses 160 stores as well as an office- and a residential block. During 2016 Kanyon celebrate it´s 10th anniversary and decided to meet the future with a more sustainable waste management. They invested in a Big Hanna T120 composter.

As more and more companies turn towards a green philosophy the Kanyon Shopping Mall wanted to implement a project which was to be the first of it’s kind in Turkey. Here the Big Hanna T120 will use the work of microorganisms and turn all the food waste collected at the Mall into compost. The process will produce an estimated annual output of 6.5 tons of compost. In April the Big Hanna was installed and so far the outcome lives up to the expectations.

Environmentally friendly

The composter creates a natural soil fertilizer and is one of the most environmentally friendly solutions to organic waste management. The system decreases the number of garbage containers locally as well as the amount of waste transports. In the long run it also considerably reduces the need of landfill sites and thereby reduce the need to sanitize soil as well as avoid contamination of groundwater. The waste volume is reduced by 90% and it´s weight by 50%. To reduce the odorous emissions that are naturally generated by the composting process, the machine is equipped with a biofilter. Through the effective loading system any hygiene problems are eliminated.

Local use of compost

The Big Hanna is up and running and in the near future it will produce high quality compost that will be used in the area around the Kanyon Shopping Mall. The aim is that the compost will be part of the organic life cycle and help produce food in the local area.

Huge reduction

Thanks to Big Hanna T120 the Kanyon Shopping Mall will reduce it’s waste by 26 tons of garbage and at least 104 tons of carbon dioxide annually – an important step towards a more sustainable environment.

Seven Big Hannas delivered to southern Italy

Together with our partner Achab Group we have had the pleasure to deliver seven Big Hannas to the region of Puglia in the southeastern part of Italy.

Big Hanna model T480

The composters (T480 and T240) were delivered to Italy between September and December 2015. Since then Achab Group has delivered the machines to the seven municipalities and they will start up the installations during the spring.

The delivery includes a Big Hanna as well as construction and installation of security system, a water collection system, roofing and prefabricated support. Achab Group will also handle the training of the local staff and implement the start up process.

The Big Hanna is equipped with a Touch screen panel and is connected by an Ethernet cable to the municipalities own internal network. This enables the staff to control the machine by a remote system and constantly monitor the temperature of the internal process, the operating parameters and to get daily reports on activities in real time.

Local composting - zero transportation

In Italy the project goes under the name ”0 km from organic waste to compost" to enhance the local perspective. The organic waste will be collected at every household in the municipality and emptied in the local Big Hanna. The machine will turn the waste into fertilising compost which will be used in the local area.
The seven sites allow a total average capacity of 120 t/year and will decrease costs as well as facilitate organic waste management. Local composting eliminates both transportation costs and CO2 emissions when the municipalities no longer need to transport their organic waste to remote waste facilities.

Big Hanna and ABB - a secure solution for Rosendals Trädgård

In the latest edition of ABB's corporate magazine 'Utblick' an article tells the story about our joint venture at Rosendals Trädgård in Stockholm. The same story was published at the ABB website and we´re happy to share it here with our readers.

At Rosendals Trädgård our Big Hanna model T-240 turns garden and food waste into useful and fertilising soil ever since its installation in 2012. ABB delivered its Pluto safety system which we integrated with the machine prior to delivery and installation on site. Since then Big Hanna has become an important part of the gardens recycling system and gardener Niklas Karlsson almost sees "her" as a colleague. The machine that makes it easier to breathe

Big Hanna, the composting machine, is the center of a recycling system where food waste is converted into compost and helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This means that Big Hanna improves the quality of the air we breathe.

Niklas Karlsson, head of the kitchen garden at Rosendals Trädgård, is standing at one end of a large machine. He runs his right hand through the soil in a container, lifts a fistful and then releases it through his fingers.

“This is fantastic compost. You can rely on her. She makes our job so much easier,” Karlsson says when he lays his soily hand on one of the hatches as if giving her a gentle pat.

She is Big Hanna, a composting machine that was installed at Rosendals Trädgård three years ago.

“Obviously she is a machine, but she is only using mechanics to boost a natural process. Big Hanna is my own special cow. She composts our food waste in four steps over two months, just like a cow with its four stomachs,” Karlsson says.

Here at Rosendals Trädgård, a model T-240 Big Hanna Composter has become an important part of recycling on site. Rosendals Trädgård farms biodynamically and they have now closed the circle, as Karlsson phrases it.

“The food people enjoy in the restaurant this year comes from the food people enjoyed here last year, or at least food left over from the year before,” he says.

Tin-Tin Jersild, who is head of operations at Rosendals Trädgård, naturally agrees. She deposits a container of food waste into Big Hanna, adds some pellets and explains:

“This machine helps us to recycle resources. In other words, not to consume more resources than our operations produce.”

“Precisely. We wouldn't be able to do what we have been wanting to do without Big Hanna. The process is now much quicker thanks to Big Hanna but it is still very much a natural and organic process,” adds Karlsson.

He pushes up his beanie hat, leans on a spade by one of the composter bins some way from Big Hanna and beams in a way only a man who loves composters more than anything else in the world can do.

“Before Big Hanna, it took twelve months to get good compost. Now it's ready in half that time,” he says.

It all starts with food waste. This comes from the restaurant and bakery at Rosendals Trädgård, where nothing is allowed to be thrown away. Even though the Big Hanna T-240 Composter is packed with advanced technology and mechanics plus safety sensors from ABB that ensures it is safe and secure to work with, the process itself is very close to nature's own composting process and actually pretty simple. In with the old at one end. Out with the new at the other end.

100 kilos of food waste is transformed into around ten to 20 kg of compost.

Containers of food waste are emptied into a container where the waste is ground and mixed with pellets. This mix is then passed into Big Hanna where it makes its way through the four “stomachs” or stages over a three to four week period.

The four stages are a kind of rumination, except the end product is soil that is mixed with sawdust. A kind of pre-compost rather than manure.

However, proper manure is also required. So when this pre-compost is transferred to the compost area at Rosendals Trädgård, it is mixed with natural dung from the horses, cows and boars from Skansen, the next door neighbor on Djurgården. Six months later, Niklas Karlsson and Tin-Tin Jersild and their team have a soil improver that is as far from artificial fertilizers and chemicals as possible. The cycle has been completed.

Karlsson and Jersild are living the dream for vegetable lovers. Karlsson offers us some oyster leaf and fresh wasabi to taste. Jersild says:

“The better the nutrition that is added to the soil, the better the vegetables taste. We are reinforcing the organisms in the soil after every harvest and benefiting the microorganisms in it.”

Karlsson returns to the subject of “her”. To his Big Hanna.

“We understand each other. She is reliable and creates something we need. Plus she is safe to work with. The safety sensors are exactly what they sound like: they monitor the process and stop the machine immediately if anything is not as it should be.”

Big Hanna was invented by sociologist Torsten Hultin in 1991 to “make us aware of how modern society misuses the earth's resources”. According to Hultin, on site composting would ensure we better understand the grow-eat-grow cycle. There are now Big Hannas all round the world: at the French research station Port-aux-Francais on the tiny Kerguelen Islands in the Pacific Ocean, on Sweden's highest mountain, Kebnekaise, at a large military base on New Zealand, in around 50 prisons in England and numerous prisons in Ohio, USA, where they are also now part of rehabilitation programs.

Big Hanna is a composting machine that converts food waste into compost and helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions. ABB safety products ensure machine safety.

When compost systems manufacturer Susteco AB wanted to integrate an effective safety system, they chose Pluto-PLC from ABB where the components communicate with each other.

“The system ensures people who use Big Hanna feel perfectly safe,” says Cecilia Ek, sales director at Susteco AB.

Machine safety is not only important for anyone who operates the machinery, it is also important for efficiency, as it reduces wear and tear and ensures a longer life span for the equipment.

ABB is the world leader in machine safety and more and more companies are choosing the ABB integrated safety sensor Eden.

“When you work with Big Hanna you can focus entirely on what is going on inside the machine without have to think about safety. Its flexibility means you can work in various different ways and concentrate on the work you are doing without the slightest concern about the machine,” says Ek.

The Pluto safety PLC is the “brain” that can manage different types of safety sensor. In the case of Big Hanna, the Eden concept, also from ABB, was chosen. In addition to having a high enclosure class for outdoor use, the Eden non-contact sensor provides greater scope in managing the mechanical design of hatches. Compared to the sensor previously used, it has three times greater tolerance. Pluto not only checks the hatches, it stops the machine from operating if a hatch is opened.

“It is absolutely impossible to start the machine until Eden has sent the all clear signal,” says Harald Estving at Elektro Part AB, who did all the programming.

Between them, ABB and Elektro Part AB worked out an optimum solution that was then presented to Susteco. Estving was responsible for the programming and ABB produced a CAD sketch showing a modular system where you can add more and more hatches if required.

“The Pluto safety-PLC is a new generation of control systems that are twice as safe,” says Estving.

* ABB has installed its Pluto safety system including its Eden safety sensor that consists of components Adam and Eva. The Pluto safety PLC sends a coded signal to Adam and when the hatch is closed, Eva makes contact with Adam that then sends the coded signal on to Pluto that the system is safe and secure.

* ABB and systems integrator Elektro Part AB chose to update to a more modern, flexible and modular system with Pluto and Eden from older safety relays, with safety sensor JSNY7 in Big Hanna at Rosendals Trädgård.

* Pluto and the number of Edens are customized to customer requirements, in the case of Big Hanna, the number of hatches.

In Sweden it´s still cold, gardening and cultivation is but a dream, but in Italy spring is in the air. Our partners in Italy, the Achab Group, welcomes spring by honouring Big Hanna and local composting. We gladly like to share their words with all of you. Soon spring will reach both Sweden and the British Islands.

Spring is finally here and the compost is up and running

The snow is melting in the northern parts of Italy and further south the first plants are beginning to grow. Nature is waking up after winter and all growing things need to be nurtured. What could possibly be better than compost produced by the Big Hanna? Local composting is an ideal solution for small and middle sized municipalities or neighborhoods that are far away from waste recycling facilities or lack large scale compost facilities. With a Big Hanna organic waste is easily managed and useful compost is easily produced.

Big Hanna - now in 32 locations all over Italy

All the way from Valle d'Aosta on the northern border towards Switzerland, along the Mediterranean Sea to the west and Adriatic Sea to the east, as far as the southeastern tip and across to Sicily they appreciate the advantage of local composting. At 32 different locations we have installed a Big Hanna which turn organic waste into nurturing soil. The process decrease the CO2 emissions since fewer transports are needed and locally produced compost fertilises local agriculture and gardens. In cooperation with the Achab Group we have installed Big Hannas, trained staff and spread our conviction that local composting is the best way to recycle organic waste and create a better environment both locally and globally. Three Big Hanna composters in Genoa, Italy – a new experience of community composting

During the autumn 2015 The Development Agency GAL Genovese Srl acquired three Big Hanna composters model T120_40L. The project was partly financed by ENPI (European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument) and SCOW (Selective collection of the organic waste in tourist areas).

The aim of the project ENPI-SCOW is to develop effective management systems to turn biodegradable waste into compost. To remove organic waste from the urban waste cycle is desirable since it contributes to the total reduction. It also follows the indicated regulations stated by the EU-treaty. Composting is one of the suggested key actions to reduce waste production.

Waste turn into fertilisers

The three composters from Big Hanna were delivered and installed during November and early December and placed at two schools and one municipality in the Province of Genoa. The composters will promote the production and use of mature high quality compost as fertilizer for agriculture and plants within the local area.

One of the composters is placed at a school at Centro San Salvatore in the village Villaggio del Ragazzo. The composter is installed on the school premises close to the kitchen and is managed by the kitchen staff. They load the composter with kitchen scraps and leftovers from the preparation of meals in the school canteen. Thanks to careful protocols at the school the waste is kept to a minimum. Thus the machine is loaded daily with about 30-50 kg of food waste and pellets. The produced compost will be used at the gardens and green areas inside the school, but also in the garden and sports fields in the surroundings.

Through an Ethernet connection with the school's internal network the machine is accessible on a remote system. This enable the management to constantly monitor the temperature of the internal process, the operating parameters and daily reports on activities in real time.

A second machine was installed at the Marco Polo hotel school in Genoa and the composter is managed by the kitchen staff. The machine is loaded daily with 50-70 kg of food scraps plus pellets, and the compost output will be used on the green areas at the school.

The third composter is currently under an evaluation process by the authorities of the Metropolitan City of Genoa. It will be installed as a trial project at the City of Ne, where it will be used to treat organic waste collected from about 400 citizens.

Equipped with our new touch screen remote control

All three machines are equipped with a loading hopper and a biofilter. The biofilter reduces the odorous emissions which are naturally generated by the composting process. The machines are also equipped with a digital touch screen display, a more accessible interface that facilitates operation and remote control through a network connection with router and a SIM card.

Successful start

The start-up of the first two machines have been very positive. Our reports show good management, excellent process temperatures and a consequent reduction of organic mass inside.

City of Fondachelli, Sicily is composting with the new Big Hanna with remote access

The City of Fondachelli, a small Town in the province of Messina, Sicily, has installed a Big Hanna composter model T240 with a bin lift and a Hanna biofilter. An important innovation of this machine is the new touch screen that Susteco AB has developed to make it easy for their customers to record the input of food waste and output of compost as well as remotely monitor the temperatures of the biological process and settings.

With the new touch screen it is possible to remotely connect to the macchine to see temperatures and log in to the settings and change the parameters if needed. If there is anything wrong with the machine it is possible to ask the machine to send an alert via email or text message to the operator. By using USB or FTP the logged info can be downloaded and then opened in Microsoft Excel.

The new operator panel features a simple interactive interface: by pressing simple symbols it is possible to operate the machinery's main functions. This makes it possible for people of many different languages to be able to operate the same machine without having to change the language settings. There are also different levels of access to operation and changing settings.

The City of Fondachelli installed the equipment together with ACHAB s.r.l.'s subdistributor Eco4you at their waste collection center. This is the first installation in Sicily. There is a great potential for local solutions for treatment of waste like Big Hanna in Sicily.

The Big Hanna model T240 has a capacity of converting up to about 65 tons of food waste per year into compost. The machine will be loaded with the organic waste collected from the households in the area three times a week by personnel carrying out the collection services in the municipality.

Citizens in Masserano (BI), Italy are composting with Big Hanna

"Here are the keys and have fun." At the recycling center in the village of Upper Rongio, Masserano (Biella) the citizen can put their food waste directly into the Big Hanna composter. The composter will be operated by the technical department of the municipality together with the Consortium COSRAB and this set up will provide the citizens with compost.

It was with support from COSRAB (Consortium Waste Disposal Area Biella)" and the cross-border project "C3PO for waste reduction (Alcotra Italy-France, 2007-2013)" that Rongio i Masserano not only was able to install a Big Hanna for the organic residues of the inhabitants but also were able to reorganize their waste collection and create a unique recycling center. The recycling center area is under video surveillance and is only for the exclusive use of local residents who get access by a key card system.

This change is well accepted by the local community (about 80 families of permanent residents and holiday homes) which will use the above to improve the quality of recycling and to avoid drop-outs at the side of bins that always disturbed the quiet daily life of this village in Biella area.

DRC in Ohio continues to implement Big Hanna composter at six of their correctional institutions

We proudly announce that the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (ODRC) in the United States of America once again chose to compost their food waste with our Big Hanna composter.

ODRC first installed two Big Hanna composters at Noble Correctional Institution in 2012. Just after installation at Noble, ODRC experienced the benefits of taking care of the food waste on-site instead of sending it to landfill.

Not only did they like the easy operation and the fact that the units could be installed indoors, but they also appreciated the cost savings from reduced waste hauls to the landfill and fewer trips through the security gates. In addition, ODRC recognized the offenders’ commitment to composting and willingness to learn about Big Hanna and gardening.

In 2014, ODRC decided to expand their use of Big Hannas, and this past February, the first two of six new Big Hanna composters, model T480, units were installed at two other correctional institutions. The remaining units have been delivered to the next four locations and the start-up is now taking place.

The first Big Hanna model T480 in this roll-out was installed at Belmont Correctional Institution located in the eastern part of Ohio. The second unit was installed at Ross Correctional Institution, in southern Ohio.

Each of the institutions chosen for these six units house about 2,500 male offenders. All food waste at each institution is first separated and mechanically macerated and dewatered in a pulper installed in the food service area.

The pulped food waste is then taken to the composter where it is mixed with bulking material and put into Big Hanna. After the two-month start-up, the composters at Ross and Belmont are now operating at full capacity.

For State of Ohio Agencies, and organizations participating in the State of Ohio Cooperative Purchasing Program, the Big Hanna machines are available for direct purchase through our contract with Ohio DAS (Department of Administrative Services) - contract number is CSP-900-215 Index GDC 159.

Three Star Green Restaurants in Istanbul Turkey, use Big Hanna Composter

We are pleased to announce that our distributor in Turkey, Ecotec, has become a part of The Green Restaurant Association Turkey’s program. The Green Restaurant Association Turkey (GRAT) is a non-profit organization that provides certification for restaurants to become more environmentally responsible.

The GRAT is founded by World Wide Fund for Nature Turkey (WWF Turkey) and Bosphorus University in Istanbul. During the beginning stage of the GRAT, two restaurants got their certification as a Three Star Green Restaurant. Turkish Restaurant & Entertainment Association (TURYID) and Besiktas Municipality are also playing an active role in this project.

In February 2015, the first Big Hanna composter model T120 was successfully installed at the Sunset Grill Restaurant in Istanbul to compost the food waste on-site and the second Big Hanna T120 will be installed in the La Mancha Restaurant en which is a part of the Soul Restaurant Group.

These two Big Hanna composter T120 were purchased by Unilever Food Solutions which is a sponsor in that project. The compost will Besiktaş Municipality use in their public gardens in Besiktas/Istanbul.

Ecotec’s CEO, Mehmet Başaran told us that GRAT’s goal is to reach 100 green restaurants in the first year.

The County council in Val de Marne, France install a second Big Hanna composter in Valenton

The County council in Val de Marne located south east of Paris, continue to implement their policy of sustainable development and management of food waste by installing a second Big Hanna modell T120 to convert the organic food waste from the canteen at the county technical department in Valenton.

The equipment that has been installed and commissioned by the company Ar-Val are: One Big Hanna composter model T120, a binlift, a bio filter, one secondary treatment area and a roof covering the units.

The installation of the system makes it possible for the canteen to recycle a part of their waste on-site by making their own compost. By doing that they respect the law "La loi grenelle" which regulate the treatment of organic waste in France.

To convert their biological waste on-site is seen as a major cultural novelty in this county.

The compost of quality NFU 44-051 will of course be used by the park management within the engineering department but also will aslo be sold for use in a research project about green roofs.

They will also use the compost as a soil amendment in their vegetable gardens.

New Zealand Defence Force go green with Big Hanna

From New Zealand’s Defence Force is going green with a new initiative targeting the food waste it produces. It’s starting with the Navy, which as well as protecting our shores, is now making its own compost.

TVNZ’s OneNews reporter, Matt McLean, recently visited the Vince McGlone Galley at Devonport Naval Base and was pleasantly surprised at the standard of cuisine prepared there. Petty Officer Chef Simon Gillbanks explained what was on the menu that day. “We’ve got some pork loin, with apple and blue cheese coleslaw, pan-fried steak with a herb butter, and a Malaysian rendang curry.”

Welcome to the Navy, where apparently, they’re aiming for a Michelin star!

“This sounds very gourmet,” Matt remarked to Simon.

“We’ve got to do it flash, and keep the boys [and girls] happy,” said Simon. “They’re never happy, some want a medium-rare steak, others want well-done!” Despite the routine grumbles, Matt checked in the galley dining room and found a high level of satisfaction.

But keeping the Navy well fed means the chefs are preparing up to 3,000 meals a week – that equates to 95 tonnes of food waste a year. “What to do with those scraps?” asked reporter Matt.

Until now, they’ve been carted off to the tip. But not any more thanks to Big Hanna.

Shaun Bowler, of Big Hanna Composter Ltd, explained how Big Hanna works. “She composts onsite and in a closed vessel, which means that instead of trucking food waste off your site, you’re actually turning it into rich, nutritious compost onsite.”

It takes around eight weeks for the food to get turned into compost.

Shaun Bowler continued, “Think of Big Hanna as a big gut. As the food passes through during that eight to ten week period, she goes through different zones of bacteria, until the process is finished. It’s a natural, biological process.”

The Navy is already seeing cost savings and environmental benefits. The Navy chefs have noted big waste reductions. There are now plans to expand it to other New Zealand Defence Force bases.

As TV reporter Matt concluded, “‘The Navy – clean, green and great chefs. Who knew?”

UNIVALOM installs a Big Hanna Composter in a community composting site in a housing area in Les Semboules, France.

UNIVALOM - an association controlled by a number of local councils with the objective to recycle household waste just finished their eleventh composting facility which can be used by the residents nearby.

In the area UNIVALOM just opened the recycling center and a collection place for organic waste from households and companies. The organic waste is composted on site by a Big Hanna Composter.

By installing this Big Hanna model T75, UNIVALOM implements their strategy for sustainable development and recovery of food waste.

This Big Hanna is equipped with a bin lift, a shredder and a biofilter. It is installed in a separate house and there is a covered maturation bay and a garden that is used for education in the same area.

This machine is a second hand machine (sold with a one year warranty) and can be replaced if there is a need for more capacity. The food waste is added every day from a special bin which is situated near the road. Once a week a representative comes to demonstrate the machine and to eduacte the public in composting and recycling.

Buddhist Temple in Hangzhou, China make high quality compost for their tea plantation

The Lingyin Temple www.lingyinsi.org in Hangzhou, China recently installed a Big Hanna Composter model T240 to convert their food waste to compost.

The temple's name is commonly literally translated as ‘Temple of the Soul's Retreat’. The Lingyin Temple was founded in 326AD and is the most recognized temple in Hangzhou with a long history of about 1 700 years. The temple is situated at the west end of the beautiful West Lake and the temple is nested between Feilai and Beigao Mountain. This is one of the largest Buddhist temples in China and attracts thousands of visitors every day.

Today about 300 monks lives here. According to the Buddhist tradition the monks only eat vegetables. When it is time to eat an encirclement to food takes place by ringing in this bell.

In this temple there is also a lot of education for monks taking place. Therefore from time to time it can be up to 500 monks at this temple.

If you are in the Hangzhou area a visit is a must. In the cliffs around the mountain there are many statues to look at. The statues are carved out in the rocks in the forest. The most famous statue is called 'The laughing monk' - a statue that is about 9 meters wide.

The temple is focused on sustainability and has implemented candles that are reusable as a way to minimize the amount of waste they produce. Another example is that the temple only sell incense sticks of top quality, these make the air a bit better around the temple due to the fact that the smoke is less than from incence sticks from lower quality.

In the valleys around the Lingyin temple they grow tea and instead of using chemical fertilizers the Abbot wants to use the compost from the food waste in the temple. He decided that he wanted the most natural and highest quality compost possible and decided to install our Big Hanna composter.

At the temple they produce about 1 000 kg food waste per week that until now have been sent to landfill. To compost the food waste is a new procedure to the monks and at the installation the interest in how the machine and biological process worked was very high.

SYBERT is a regional waste management company covering 198 local councils with 230 000 residents. SYBERT's strategy is focused on waste minimization and a variety of measures have been introduced to change peoples habits regarding waste.

In order to be able to offer solutions that makes it possible to avoid or minimize waste at source an ambitious program has been carried out for waste minimization and composting for the residents in the cities and the countryside. The program has been implemented in cooperation with the EU, ADEME and Conseil géneral du Doubs.

Sybert has installed a Big Hanna composter in a block of flats for young workers and students for collection of food waste from the residents and nearby properties.

Big Hanna model T240 has been installed in ground floor of the resdential building.

Food waste is collected three times per week from the residents and daily from the restaurant in the building. The food waste is then fed in to the Big Hanna.

The premises have a place for washing the bins used for collection of food waste. The residents gets a clean bin when they have left their food waste.

Secondary treatment is done nearby in these wooden crates.
