What started as a peaceful afternoon on Lake Shirley for Sheron Brown and his 10-year-old daughter quickly devolved into a scene of racial hostility that has shocked the Lunenburg community.

The story began last May on Lake Shirley in Lunenburg, MA. Competitive fisherman Sheron Brown was out on a boat with his young daughter, Azaylia, enjoying the day on th public waterway, until their peace was interrupted by 67-year-old David McPartlan who began yelling from his property, claiming they "shouldn't be fishing there."

The situation escalated quickly with McPartlan hurling a large rock toward the boat and followed it with a barrage of racial slurs. The entire incident was captured on video which help in getting McPartlan arrested but that wasn't the last the Brown's would hear of McPartlan.

According to court records, McPartlan allegedly attempted to take things further by trying to bribe one of his own employees to find the family's home and use a sledgehammer to destroy the Brown's boat's engine. When the employee refused to participate in the retaliatory scheme, McPartlan reportedly fired him.

New African Centered Charter School To Open Fall 2024

APPLETON — At a time in the country when politicians are calling to eliminate school subjects dealing with Black History and anything that "would cause other students to feel uncomfortable," there seems to be a glimmer of hope from a city of about 75,000. Nestled in the heart of the Fox River Valley in Wisconsin is the city of Appleton, where big things are happening.

On the 27th of November, the Appleton Area School District (AASD) Board of Education voted in favor of including a new African-centered charter school in the district. The AASD encourages the startup of charter schools because it understands charter schools can address the specific needs of students. What separates this new charter school from others in the district is it plans on including African and African American history and culture in its STEEAM curriculum which consists of Science, Technology, Engineering, Entrepreneurship, Arts, and Math.

Named "The Ọmọladé Academy" it will be administrated by African Heritage Inc., a local non-profit with an interest in improving the success of African Americans. The Ọmọladé Academy plans on bridging the education gap by preparing their students to compete on both the global and local stage by teaching their kids to think what they refer to as 'glocally'.

Originally intended to serve K–3 students, the Ọmọladé Academy will eventually expand to accommodate K–5 students. The Ọmọladé Academy has its work cut out for it because the district usually has 16 months to establish a charter school fully operational and ready for usage. It has to be operational by September 2024, which gives it about eight months to complete the necessary tasks and be ready for the grand opening. We're optimistic that things will work out well since this institution is exactly what our country needs, and maybe other cities will decide to follow.

U.S. leaders promise to fight to maintain freedoms for Black Americans during Juneteenth celebration

U.S. leaders are promising to fight against attacks aimed at fundamental freedoms the Black community has fought hard to obtain. This comes as the country observes Juneteenth as a federal holiday which was signed into law as a federal holiday in 2021.

During a star-studded performance at the White House this week honoring Juneteenth, President Joe Biden stated: "As the past few years remind us, our freedoms have been put at risk by racism that's still too powerful a force."

Vice President Kamala Harris also criticized legislative efforts to restrict access to voting, reproductive freedom, and the right to learn U.S. history in full.

Black Americans' freedoms are a concern shared by civil rights leaders and activists who are working together to plan a concentrated effort in the South to fight what they perceive to be efforts to stifle the power of the Black vote.

In Atlanta, Georgia, a number of organizations and community leaders came together earlier this month to discuss a variety of issues affecting Black and brown communities. Discussions will range from restrictive voting laws, to the attempt to prohibit books about the history of racism in the U.S.

According to Melanie Campbell, president of the National Coalition for Black Civic Participation, "we've always had to address the attacks on our rights and our freedoms, and that's where we are."

Did Kendrick Lamar Steal His Concept For "The Heart Part 5" From An Independent Artist?

Kendrick Lamar's latest music video "The Heart Part 5" has been getting rave reviews since its debut on May 8, 2022. The video at the time of this writing had a whopping 15 million views. It showcases Kendrick Lamar against a plain background rapping as his face transforms into other people's faces via some really good deepfake technology. The concept and execution is mind blowing but the question is did he steal this concept for a music video from an independent hip hop artist named AK?

In a music video that premiered two years earlier, hip hop artist AK released "Family Tree" a music video featuring him against a plain background rapping as his face morphs into other artists such as Eminem, Missy Elliot and Lil' Wayne. His video at the time of this writing stands at a little over 700 thousand views. Not too shabby for an independent artist, but it's a far cry from 15 million.

While it's plausible that Kendrick didn't steal the concept or intend to steal it, there's no denying there are several similarities between the two videos. See for yourself below:

Racist Origins of the Dunk Tank

Here's a little known history fact for you. The African Dodger was a game played at local fairs and carnivals during the late 19th and early 20th century. The goal of the game was to hit the target with a ball in three tries or less to win a prize.

The target in the game was the exposed head of a black person called "the dodger" because they would attempt to dodge the balls by moving their exposed head. The rest of their body was hidden behind a large sheet of canvas. An alternate named of the game was "Hit the Nigger Baby" or "Hit the Coon."

The racist and brutal game was famous across the country. Despite the dangerous nature of the game the dodger’s injuries went unreported unless they were critical or resulted in death. Some of the reported injuries were an incident when the dodger was struck in the face by a professional baseball player damaging his nose so badly it had to be amputated to save his life.

Another reported injury was when the ball struck a dodger in the mouth with so much force it knocked his teeth out and was lodged so firmly it had to be cut into pieces to be removed.

Although deaths occurred from head traumas more blacks were actively recruited under the guise of earning a wage. Eventually the brutal game was banned but not without public outcry.

Throughout the years the game would evolve into the dunking booth game where balls are thrown at a mechanical target and a person sitting in the tank only falls into a tank of water and no one gets injured. My how the times have changed. The next time you see a dunk tank at a carnival remember it's racist beginnings.

7 Tips To Help You Learn New Languages In 2022

Struggling with learning a new language? You may find the following 7 tips very helpful for getting the desired foreign language under your belt.

Start by writing the target language's alphabet. Below the letters, write the sound each letter makes in a way that makes sense to you. Begin every practice session by going through alphabet mastering each letter's sound.
Find children's cartoons, songs and movies you're interested in and watch them. Make sure you find shows and songs you enjoy or at minimum don't find annoying.
If you're a more advanced learner skip the kiddy cartoons and jump right into foreign films. Watching foreign films is a great way to learn cadences, vocabulary and about other cultures. Learning about the culture of the people whose language you're trying to learn peels back important layers revealing cultural sayings and deeper meanings that you just won't get if you're only trying to learn the language. Think of it as a package deal.
Learn phrases you would use in a real life situation like, "how much does this cost?" or "thank you very much." The focus on your studies should be geared towards being able to effectively communicate in a different language. So if the language program you're using is only teaching you to say useless things like "this is a pencil, not a banana" it's time to find a more practical program.
Be consistent with your practice. Create a schedule where you can dive into learning a language with no interruptions if possible. If you can only carve out 20 minutes a day to undisturbed study make it count and be consistent. You'll see progress in no time.
Use online resources like Duolingo, Youtube and Omniglot.com to help with your training. Duolingo is great for drilling new words and phrases while Youtube can provide access to native speakers that provide insight into their culture. Omniglot.com provides an alphabet (for many languages) with phonetic keys as well as video lessons and links to other language resources.
Have fun! Probably the most important and least thought of tip for learning a new language.

Learning a new language is hard enough by itself, especially for adults, but if you make it fun you will absorb more information without it being a burden. Happy studying!

What Essence Got Wrong About the "Gorilla Glue Girl"

This morning while checking my Twitter feed I came across an article on Essence.com written by Candice Benbow about Tessica Brown, infamously known as the "Gorilla Glue girl". The ignominious title was given to Miss Brown after she posted a video showing off her immovable hair caused by using Gorilla Glue instead of her usual styling glue to hold it in place. Gorilla Glue? Yes, Gorilla Glue, that powerful adhesive used for crafts and DIY projects. The product clearly states on the front of the bottle: "Bonds: Wood, Metal, Fabric, Foam, Plastic, Paper, Glass, Leather and More!" and on the back a caution label warns not to ingest the glue or get it in the eyes or on skin or clothing.

After reading the label it would be clear to a reasonable person the product isn't the type of adhesive one should use in their hair. For this reason many who are familiar with the story have made the whole situation meme worthy making Miss Brown the butt of many jokes. Some insulting her or questioning her level of intelligence, while others result to cracking jokes. Some people surmise that this whole ordeal was orchestrated by her as an elaborate clout chasing scheme and others empathize with her and this is where we shift our focus to the Essence article.

The article titled, "Tessica Brown Isn't The 'Gorilla Glue Girl,' She's A Black Woman Who Deserves Empathy" questions why there is a lack of empathy towards a Black woman who made a mistake? The author further solidifies her point by presenting her own mistake of leaving a relaxer in her hair longer than instructed and receiving chemical burns. She questions why Black women can't make mistakes without being verbally bashed to the point of being dehumanized? I don't think that is the case at all, at least in regards to the case of Tessica and the Gorilla Glue situation. I liken her situation to when my family wanted to barbecue but realized we didn't have lighter fluid, so my father decided to use a little gasoline. Needless to say that situation didn't turn out well. Anyone I've told that story to laughed and questioned my father's logic. While both are flammable they are NOT the same and definitely aren't for the same uses. Everyone including children understood that upon hearing the story.

My point is I don't perceive the jokes, judgment or insults to be because this happened to a black woman. I think people look at the situation and consider the age of Miss Brown and figure it would be highly unlikely for a mature, reasonable person especially a grown 40 year old woman to make such an error despite race thereby reaching the conclusion she's either mentally lacking or clout chasing. The author questions if the response would be different if Tessica were a White woman? I personally don't think so. Social media is full of White people (young and old, male and female) doing equally foolish things whether intentional or unintentional and they get the same treatment. They're given titles reflective of their foolishness, made fun of and depending on how ridiculous the situation will have countless memes made of them.

I once made a breakfast that ended up ruining a date night when I made pancakes with cayenne pepper instead of cinnamon because I simply didn't read the label and the two spice bottles looked similar. That resulted in a pretty crappy night (pun intended) so believe me when I tell you I'm aware people make mistakes, but as long as others are aware of those mistakes there is a high probability that those people will have something to say whether good or bad, helpful or hurtful and that happens regardless of race or gender.

What's the biggest threat to the black community? Most would think racism or white supremacy but there's a far greater threat than those two combined. That threat is self-hatred. This threat is spread like a virus infecting the masses as it's propagated through music, movies, TV shows and planted into the hearts and minds of black folks until finally its physically manifested resulting in some form of negative actions towards self and/or black brothers and sisters that look like you.

What makes self-hatred so insidious is that a lot of black folks are walking around infected with this nasty bug and have no clue, but let me assure you if you refuse to patronize a business simply because it's black-owned, you have it. If your first inclination when you see a successful black person is to turn up your nose, you have it. If you always feel the need to haggle black business owners (but wouldn't do the same to non-blacks) you better believe you have it! Gun Tottin' Granny Threatens Black Couple's Picnic

A white woman was so threatened by a black couple who were peacefully trying to have a picnic on Memorial Day she clutched her pistol while telling them they can't be in the park. The only good thing about this story is it doesn't end like many others where innocent black people are murdered in broad daylight while their white killer claims they "feared for their life" and only get a slap on the wrist. Instead this couple were able to leave without physical harm. Check out the story below:

Infamous Robocall Defends White Murderous Vigilante

When 21 year-old Hannah Payne allegedly witnessed 62 year-old Kenneth Herring flee from a minor hit & run accident she knew she had to do something so she followed him for a mile or so. She didn't jot down his license plate number -- oh no, she had something else in mind. Eventually she followed him to a place where she could box his vehicle in so he couldn't get away and at some point she phoned the authorities like any good citizen would do.

The problem is she didn't wait for the police to sort things out -- no way. That white woman decided she would teach that black man a lesson by taking the law into her own hands and in true George Zimmerman fashion gunned him down claiming she feared for her life. Since Payne's ~~surprising~~ arrest, a white supremacist podcast called The Road to Power funded a racist robocall targeting residents of Clayton County, Georgia to stir up white tears for Payne and white anger for Herring with statements like "Negroes aren't American", "They're not fully human" and "Hannah Payne did nothing wrong." This isn't the first time the podcast has been fingered for being behind racist robocalls although the host adamantly denied any involvement with robocalls during one of his broadcasts.

Lil Nas X's Song Exposes Country's Hidden Racism

When Lil Nas X put a country song over a trap beat to make "Old Town Road" he probably thought he was just cooking up something new. He probably didn't think the same song would be a viral hit landing spots on several charts one of which being Billboard's Hot Country Songs. What may have really come as a surprise though, is how quickly Billboard dropped him from the country chart for not being -- you ready for this? -- country enough. A lot of people have been questioning the real motive behind Billboard's decision and of course they mention it had nothing to do with race. In fact the organization claimed:

"Billboard’s decision to take the song off of the country chart had absolutely nothing to do with the race of the artist."

Bank Calls Police on Black Man Because of Paycheck

Once again the police are called on a black person for doing what white people enjoy doing without interference. Imagine walking into a bank to cash your paycheck and ending up humiliated, handcuffed and placed in the back of a cop car. The offense? Banking while being black. Unfortunately that's exactly what happened to Paul McCown, a black man who dared to attempt to cash his legitimate paycheck at a Huntington Bank branch in Brooklyn, Ohio. Hopefully the whole #WhileBeingBlack phenomenon will be a thing of the past in 2019. For those who haven't the slightest clue of what #WhileBeingBlack is it's the offense of doing anything while being a black man, woman or child. What are your thoughts?
