DSA for secondary schools - To apply, or not?

What is Direct School Admission (DSA-Sec)?

Primary 6 students seeking admission to certain secondary schools based on their talent in sports, Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs) and specific academic areas.

When many asked if we would DSA (Direct School Admission) our daughter 3 years ago, during her P6 year, I replied, 'maybe Not' or 'Unlikely'. She was, and is still doing Rhythmic gymnastics. When it was during the DSA period in May, I did so for the daughter! I've learnt to not leave out this option especially when it's a sport they are determined to commit through the next 4 years in secondary.

Last year, when friends asked if we would DSA the son, I took on a less humble opinion that we will go for it. We were determined to do so for a few reasons:

Peace of mind

I will not deny that having a DSA spot secured gives a peace of mind. Not that your child does not have to work hard, but stress level can be largely reduced.

School Choices

It doesn't have to be the top school choices, but we had wanted one that the son will thrive and possibly do well in a not too bad secondary school.

Inconsistent academics

The son demonstrated very inconsistent results in his p5 and p6 years. I got worried, and felt that a DSA offer would relieve us much. That being said, do assess your child's academic ability, and plan to DSA into the schools that matches his/her caliber.

Secondary CCA option

CCA options in secondary is not as liberal as it is in primary school. The number of intake for each sport is capped at a firm number in many schools. They do not take in recreational players. That is, schools only have the resources and vacancies for competitive players, with NSG (National School Games) in mind. With this in place, it's only natural that the team begins their selection of team members during DSA. Any leftover spots, if any, will be opened to students who trialed for the CCA during school's CCA trial week.

Here's our story with the son.

We applied to 3 schools, went for 3 trials, did 2 interviews, but was offered 0. One school even took the approach to text us on our interest level before an interview came up. That was when we felt hope. But after all the interviews closed, we heard through the grapevine that spots for most schools have been verbally offered. We received no phone call. I continued holding onto hope until the written confirmations came. That was when we knew we had zero offer confirmed. I was disheartened, but not devastated. Perhaps, we were not well prep enough during the interview. Wait, how did it feel like I'm the one going through these?! I mean of course, DSA is just another role in the PSLE journey, all is not done deal if no offer comes. One day, while driving, God comforted me. He reminded me about on holding onto faith and hope until the very end, and that it's not the end. But... "that was the end." I debated within.

Of course, I told the son, not that he's not a good player, but that badminton is an extremely competitive sport with better players out there. Let me front you this, badminton is an extremely popular sport for DSA. But if that is what your child loves, so be it and trial for it! Passion over everything else.

Here's the sequel. The day he received his PSLE results, he did better than we all expected! Which means, he had a wider school options than we had initially narrowed. We shortlisted listed schools that offer badminton as CCA, as well as, finding out if they have allocated vacancies for talents who did not DSA. We knew this meant a chance, even if it was a very slim one. We managed our expectations while firming on our first school choice. That year, many schools' cut off points were adjusted down, a lower AL score was required for most schools. It wasn't one we expected, but we're glad to be allocated the first school choice.

During the first parents meet session in school earlier this year, we were informed that badminton had 7 spots. And through word of mouth, the son found out that there were only 2 spots given to talented students during the trial. Possibly the DSA spots offered, but not taken. My heart sank. I mean if my son was that talented, he would have been accepted through DSA. Ironically, this is the school that he didn't make it through, to the interview.

In the name of hope and determination, he went for the trial. And of course, you should cast the net wider by going for other CCA trials, which he did. Lo and behold, he made it through the trial and was shortlisted to join their team! It was a smashing journey to emerge as top 2 among the 70 students whom came for trial. We celebrated and learnt the true meaning of holding onto faith and hope till the very end. We're very thankful for this ordeal and the son had learnt so much through it.

And of course, how he ranks among those who have gotten in via DSA, or whether he eventually gets to play at the NSG (National School Games) will be another story to tell. There are two levels in C division games, secondary 1 and 2. In the game of badminton, the whole of C division requires only 7 players. Which translates that, there will definitely be some as reserves sitting by the bench. This is one that parents need to manage expectations on.

So, to DSA or not? I will say unless you are ready to not get your most desired CCA, you should give it a go! And of course, one should know what DSA entails, as well as the commitment involved once accepted.

PSLE results is released. I survive to tell this tale of why I didn't want my son to drop Higher Chinese Language (HCL).

At the end of J2's P5 level, his Chinese teacher called me up, asking me to consider dropping him from the HCL subject. He wasn't doing well, failing, or barely passing it. I told the teacher to give him more time, till at least prelim. Not because I'm a stubborn Mum, or that I want to give him additional stress. There were just many reasons why I persisted on with him.

ONE

Firstly, Chinese is a language that is for life. Whatever learnt during HCL class will never be redundant. It is something that he can learn and apply in our daily course of life, or even for normal Chinese subject. No doubt, the paper formats are different, but what is the harm to knowing more Chinese vocabulary? Focus on the learning, much more than for exams.

TWO

Secondly, we don't do any tuition classes. His only extended days are during his CCA days, which is twice a week. Mondays, after school are for higher Chinese classes. No one else knows your child better than yourself. For mine, we know that days when he's back early, after school, he would very quickly rush through school and my work, then zoom off to watch TV or get on digital games. Mostly beyond an hour. I would rather school keeps him well occupied with meaningful activities and lessons, than getting on screens at home.

THREE

Thirdly, when your child's teacher sounds out concerns about your child's academics, you do have to do something about it. If you do not plan to do anything about it with your child, then perhaps, it really is wiser to heed the teacher's advice. I was insistent about not dropping HCL because I was determined to work out something with him. He was very much grudging that I didn't allow the option to drop. But I blame it on the freed up time for games and TV that was running through his mind. So here's what we did, we worked really hard together to pull the score up. I made him read compos after compos, memorise stunning and beautiful compo phrases, expressions and descriptions. We did past year papers, run through the common questions that were often tested in the comprehension sections, as well as, write and learn the hanyu pinyin of all the characters in HCL syllabus. I shared on Instagram story before, he gradually went from a single digit compo score to into the 30s. Sprinkled with much prayers, we really worked hard in sweat and tears.

We relied very heavily on this series of Chinese handbook. We used them from P1 to P6, they're good and convenient with all characters, hanyu pinyin, 造句 etc. within the book. It's pegged to their textbook, 欢乐伙伴 syllabus. Get them here.

FOUR

Fourthly, in this new AL scoring system, you never know if HCL will be needed for school selection. If there's a tie in applicants vying for the same spot, Citizenship and HCL will give your child the posting advantage. Also, it's crucial when the score lies on the cut off points for SAP schools, mostly IPs or posting group 3. Never say never, because you really won't know what the choices ahead will be, or how the tables will turn. A look at the table below, if a child without HCL lies on the border of the COP, he will not have an added advantage to a child who has HCL, with Distinction or Merit.

And of course, if it really is a struggle for your child in HCL, make a decision that most suits your family's dynamics. This is the decision we made, and I'm so glad we went from a pass to Merit, which is a huge achievement for him! And so, the son knows, every successful achievement comes with hard work, it's not by any stroke of luck, sitting by without any action plan. Mastering a language is always not an overnight magic. Given the alert a year ago, I felt I could use the remaining one year to boost him up for PSLE.

HCL Merit

Today, did we have to use HCL score to gain any school entry? No, we did not (seemingly). But it's no regrets that his Chinese language has improved so much! On the day he collected results, his Chinese teacher told him to Thank Mummy for his achievements. For that, I want to shamelessly take on much credits to it. I am very glad and thankful that it all turned out well.

[REVIEW] Fraser Residence Nankai, Osaka

Woah... dusting the cobwebs off my online blog! Excited to want to share on our Osaka, Japan trip! Which many Singaporeans visited during the recent June holiday.

First off, sharing our accommodation where we spent 3 nights in. We booked Fraser Residence Nankai, Osaka. Equivalent to a well furnished apartment, it's great for families. We took the Nakin Kansai Rapid express from Kansai airport to the residence. The train departs every hourly, and it takes about 40 mins to reach Namba. This greatly simplifies our logistics from Kansai airport, which is only a 3 minutes walk from Namba Station.

We booked the one bedroom executive that comes with two super singles, a sofa converted bed, and separate living, dining area. Besides a kitchenette and there's also a 2 in 1 washing machine, which allowed us to pack light on clothes. Other little perks include a coffee machine and humidifier. The kitchenette is well equipped with items needed to cook meals, if you are planning to. With a kitchenette, it simply means there's a sink out of the toilet which is extremely useful if someone's using the bathroom. Toiletries are fully furnished, if you require more, you may get them at the reception, lobby. There's an iron and ironing board as well. Wi-Fi works extremely well, and there's Netflix too! Which gave me some pleasure catching up on my Korean drama.

Location wise, it's extremely convenient with Ippudo opposite, 551 Horai to the right and MacDonald's just diagonal. A 10 minutes walk to Dontonbori. We did 2 breakfast days at its restaurant, Namba Ribbon. Food variety isn't wide, but good enough choices of Japanese and Western cuisines.

Highly recommend this accommodation for its room size and location. Even though the hotel was fully occupied during our period of visit, we could barely hear any noise coming from other rooms. Was a nice and quiet stay we had.

While pictures can't justify the taste, these rich yellow looking durians that we devoured were definitely not a disappointment. We had Black Gold in the bitter variant, and Old Tree Mao Shan Wang in the bittersweet variant. Durians are complex in the sense that they are between the bittersweet taste. Very much selected based on personal preference. Glad these were satisfying and well worth the calories!

Little guy is starting primary one next year. There are so many things to prep and gear him up for. Above and beyond the necessary school supplies, we are glad to have introduced him the use of myFirst Fone R1s smartwatch.

This smartwatch comes with a 6 months contract plan for its SIM card that enables the son to chat, video, and voice call us over 4G connectivity. It also functions as a wearable GPS that can give him and us more confidence whenever he's out, or in school. [Review] Smile Martabak

We had a traffic light party with pancakes from Smile Martabak! We chose the traffic light colours since we couldn't decide on the variety of flavours they have. It was red velvet oreo (cream cheese), original choco-cheese and ondeh-ondeh special that we had. Which were all sooooo good! Other flavours available are pandan cheese milk and traditional ceres and cheese. Adding on to the sweet treats, we had the martabak chicken, which we ordered with separate chilli and fresh acar. The fresh acar was surprisingly good too. Oh, there's beef martabak option too, if that's more of your palate.

Red Velvet Oreo (Cream Cheese): Combination of cream cheese, generous chunks of oreo bits. Soft and creamy, sweet and tangy with hint of chocolate taste. It was a popular choice among the kids.

The Indonesian delicacies don't end here. Chicken Martabak is also another popular Indonesian snack, it adds a good balance to the sweets. Filled with eggs, meat, greens onions, shallots and garlic, it brings on a nice fragrant and taste. We had it some time after it arrived, so we re-heated it in the oven instead of the microwave. Gives it some crisps this way. And that easily filled and made up our dinner! The pancakes are best eaten after heating up, and mircrowave does it easy.

Hua Hin in 4 days

We went from Bangkok to Hua Hin with pre-booked transportation from Hua Hin Plus. The ride was about 3 hours.

Hua Hin is a quiet and relaxing seaside resort, a laid back and free of hustle and bustle town. It is not too crowded, or perhaps it's the aftermath of covid where tourism is still gradually picking up. An ideal getaway if a slow paced itinerary is on mind.

We stayed at Hilton Hua Hin Resort, which is a beachfront resort. Booked the twin executive junior suite, and added lounge access for some pampering snacks, drinks and alcohol. A good add-on option if you plan to spend more time in the hotel. With a good range of amenities like spa, tennis and basketball court, table tennis, pool table and kids club. It's ideal for family stay.

We were given a high floor room with balcony, good partial view of the ocean and spacious room. I was grateful to be waking up to direct beach sunrise view. Was so beautiful that it made me jumped out of bed one of the mornings.

Some other activities we did, included horse riding by the beach. It's not operated by the hotel. Just walk out to the beach in the evening, and you will spot cowboys and horses.

Hua Hin Night Market

We arrived Hua Hin near evening, and since Hua Hin Night Market was walk able from our hotel, we headed there for some shopping and dinner. Souvenirs, clothing, toys and street food lined the market. It's not extensive or huge, a good market size to walk through. It's opened only in the evening, which is of course, when the weather is cooler than the day.

Many small fishing boats were actually sighted along the Gulf of Thailand, and that's where they bring their night catch to the markets and restaurants. Finding nice Thai food isn't an easy find around the area, instead there are many seafood restaurants with some Thai dishes complementing. Fresh seafood with huge lobster was definitely on our list, pampering delicacy that doesn't hurt the wallet much.

We tried two restaurants in Hua Hin Night Market, Hua Hin Seafood Restaurant and Rodfai Seafood, which are just few doors away from each other. I would highly recommend Hua Hin Seafood Restaurant, food was great and experience was wonderful. Nice sitting at the upper deck for meal, overlooking the market. Had quite a bad experience at Rodfai, the son was served a stale beef steak. They eventually refunded. It's always good to go for what's more popular on their menu than what's not. Considering it's a seafood restaurant, western food stock in their kitchen may be slow moving. And was a little annoyed that the server asked us for tips upfront. Well, a cheerful giver I shall be.

Cicada and Tamarind Market

Two other night markets that we explored on another are Cicada and Tamarind Market. Both opens only over the weekend, Friday to Sunday, and are only 5 minutes walk from each other. Cicada is much more huge than Tamarind. It's aesthetically organized and pleasant to shop in here. I really like the vibes in here, nice live singing with live performance at its amphitheater. A great place to settle dinner in here too, with varying choices of food cuisines that's purchased like food court style. Just that it's in the breezy outdoor.

And since Tamarind Market is just down the road, we had to curiously visit it. More of food than shopping. Also with live singing, it's a great place to dine, chill and enjoy some good music. Most drinks in Thailand are heavily sweetened, even fresh juices. If 'less' or 'no sugar' is your motto, you may request it upon order. Oh, we discovered a stall that sells extremely delicious cubed beef. Possibly the only one in there. Keep a lookout if you're there. So tender and tasty!

Like how Hua Hin is described, the markets are all laid back, relaxing and slow moving. Nice getaway from the usual hustle and bustle of life.

Hutsadin Elephant Foundation

An experience we can't get in our homeland, getting up close and near to elephants at Hutsadin Elephant Foundation. There were various packages in here, and of course priced at tourist rates. We opted to walk and shower the elephant. Prices go by per head, which I felt didn't quite make sense. It's one elephant we are walking, not like we get to walk one each. I did the aunty thing, bargained down a little. I mean, it was still quite some good earnings for them even after I counter offered. I forgot how much though.

Elephant assigned to us was Song Kran, a lovely gentle giant that we got to spend about 20 to 30 minutes with. Time wasn't in check as we were having fun. We were each given a basket of bananas for feeding while walking. Feeding elephants is easy, we don't even need to peel off the skin on the banana! It wasn't too long before our baskets went empty. After more photo taking with it, we headed back to give it a cool shower.

It's stated that The Hutsadin Elephant foundation is a wildlife refuge that rescues mistreated and abandoned elephants in Thailand. A non-profit organization. I'm trusting lightly on information that I cannot much verify. Regardless, I choose this over the other elephant attraction in Hua Hin, and visiting it is our little contribution to it.

Glad we all had a fun experience in here! Do wear long pants to the ankle, the long grasses can itch you.

Inu Cafe Hua Hin

Our kids are a bunch of animal lovers. Since we needed lunch after visiting elephants, we visited the Inu Cafe to fill our tummies and at the same time interact with the Shibas. There were 5 in there, if I remember right. These dogs are so well behaved, I mean my dog would be lurking around me when I eat. But these dogs are only lured to you, if you bought their food for feed.

The place is lovely, even its human food was surprisingly delicious. It wasn't a long stay in there though, the space assigned to us was rather tight and the cafe isn't air-conditioned.

Again, the kids had a fun time eating and interacting with the dogs in here.

Outlet Shopping - FN Outlet and Premium Outlet

There are two shopping outlets in Hua Hin. FN outlet and Premium Outlet, a little further away in Cha-am. FN outlet is really small, and extremely quiet on the day we visited. It's a huge department store, with other small shops looping around it. We didn't shop much, but was happy to have discovered a lovely cafe within, The tea house, where we did tea, pastries and cakes. All at wallet friendly prices, in comparative to living in Singapore. The cafe is cosy, nicely embellished with vintage feel. I guess what made the experience more pleasant was having the whole cafe to ourselves. There were no other patrons.

If shopping is itching in you, visiting the premium outlet is a better alternative.

The brands at the Premium Outlet are varying, mostly local with some foreign brands. I will say prices are not exactly discounted, and it really isn't quite worth the visit if you have other interesting locations on itinerary. But still, nothing beats premium outlet shopping in the states.

Shopping Malls

We did Bluport mall for movie and lunch. But I opted out of movie from the gang, went for a message instead. Before that, I explore the Market Village, which is about a 10 minutes walk from Bluport. It's huge with more shops and brands to comb than in Bluport, there's a cinema in here too. The daughter likes Miso Miso, which is found in Market Village mall too. Miso Miso has a huge range of cutesy stationery, bags, accessories etc. at low prices. Love it in this shop too.

Most shops and malls don't operate late to the night. That's how laid-back life is in there.

It felt like we did so much in 4 days, at Hua Hin, but it had been slow and relaxing for us. We transported from place to place by Grab. Most drivers will offer to give you a ride back with an agreed time and fee. To think back, I would have dropped outlet shopping from itinerary, to spend more time in the hotel. To relax, enjoy more of the view and amenities. Hua Hin, best place to go slow with time.

Bangkok in 4 days

Hotel

Booking hotel for family of five isn't easy. It's either you get two separate rooms or connecting rooms. We felt residences gave exactly what suited us. Booked our stay in Bangkok with Conrad Residences. Its nearest walk able BTS station is, Ploen Chit. About 1km one way. There's also a shuttle bus that you can take to and fro the hotel at every 15 minutes interval.

We booked the two bedroom deluxe suite - two bedrooms, two bathrooms, 1 living room and 1 kitchen. Was of good luxurious space we had, though we were out exploring most of the time. Very impeccable service too! The son lost his soft toy in midst of housekeeping, we had thought our search for it will be ignored by the hotel staff, but a call upon them, they found it in their laundry room and returned it to our room.

Conrad Residences, Bangkok

A friend also recommended another option for family accommodation, Grande Centre Point, Ratchadamri. It has two and three bedroom options, and its location is very near major shopping centres.

Dreamworld

There were nine of us in travel. We booked a grab van from our hotel to Dreamworld, Bangkok. About 45 minutes drive from Bangkok City, this amusement park is worth a day of fun. It is dated, definitely not as dreamy as Disneyland, but it kept the kids happy! While we thought some short hours of play within is suffice, it's so huge that a day isn't enough. Catering a full day play from the start of its opening hour to closing is wiser.

We got our tickets on klook. There are different price packages to suite your play appetite. We went for the admission with unlimited rounds of each ride except, Snow Town, Go Kart, Bicycle Boat, Bump Boat, and game stalls. With this, there's only one time playing with Alien, Haunted Mansion and Bump Car. A good enough entrance ticket for us. And it's less than $20 per person! Depending on Klook's promo. Kids below 90cm enters free. Where else on earth can we find entry to an amusement park for less than $100, for family of five?! The game stalls within are highly affordable too. It's about $2 per play if I recall right.

The Animal Farm within was where the littlest and I spent most time on, while the older kids went on the adventurous rides that he can't get on due to height limit. It was fun! I mean anything with animals and feeding animals delight! There were the lory birds, goats, sheep, rabbits, pigs and small dog room. Food is at an additional cost of less than $1 per portion. An additional entrance fee is required to enter the dog's room. We paid about $4 per pax to enter. The kids love dogs!

We didn't manage to complete visiting the attractions, or get on all the rides due to time. And we spent too much time during lunch, the crowd was huge and service was slow at the KFC within.

The Hollywood action show and colours of the world parade happen only during the weekend. We caught the action show, but not the parade. Too much fun, too little time! Was a Sunday we visited, and was not too crowded. Rides wait were between 10 to 30 minutes, while some rides do not have queue at all. There's also a water fun zone within, so bring your gear along if you intend to bask under sun and water.

A great time of fun and visit for family! We headed back to Bangkok City on the same grab van that brought us here. They would usually offer you a return trip, at a price you both agree.

Damnoen Saduak floating market and Maeklong Railway Market

We spent a day at both the floating and railway market. Damnoen Saduak floating market is largest in Bangkok with about 1.5 hours drive from city.

This floating market is extremely touristy owing to its popularity. I find that it lacks some local authentic experience, but still a good visit. The floating shops you can find are gifts, clothes, arts and food. Some on boats and some by the river banks. The prices are much higher than on land, but of course, it’s an opportunity to bless their livelihoods. We spent more on food and fruits than the non-edibles.

The morning we visited was relatively quiet. Not many shops were opened due to covid. After some shopping from our boat, we had lunch at a ‘restaurant’ by the bank which was also house to the owners. A nice and interesting experience for us. No idea how to get there or name of the eatery, but it was where our boatman brought us. Other boat stops included the temple and coconut plantation.

I think visiting the smaller and unpopular floating markets would make the experience more authentic. But since we did this floating market, it's a must to visit Maeklong Railway Market. It's just a 20 minutes drive away from Damnoen Saduak floating market.

It felt like our local wet market at Maeklong Railway Market. A walk through it, we see the selling of dried and fresh produce, seafood, exotic fishes and of course gifts and souvenirs for the tourist crowds. There are a couple of cafes within that you can enjoy a cuppa while waiting on the train. I must say, the visit is only exciting and fruitful if you witnessed the oncoming of train and how quick the stalls fold and unfold to make way for the train, as well as after its departure. Do plan your time well. We caught the train entry at 2:30pm and stayed around till 3.30pm to witness it's departure.

Train Schedule

I kind you not, but their stalls are all laid out so close to the train tracks that you find it uncomfortable, yet it's their daily drill. The train passing by is so close that you can reach out and touch as it goes by, not recommended to do so though. With covid still lingering, many stalls were not opened. And perhaps, due to the time of visit, about 2.15pm, some stalls are already done for the day.

And here's the most memorable part of my visit, I was tasked by the cafe owner of Punjung Cafe to hand some drinks to the train driver. In short, the train stopped by to receive the drinks from me! So cool. Drinks have the power to stop a train. Oh well, it could have been his order from the cafe.

The visit was an insightful experience and eyeopener for the kids to see the bustling commerce of these floating shops at the floating market, as well as the race of time with oncoming train and stalls folding up to make way.

Chatuchak Weekend Market

Other than shopping at commercial malls, Chatuchak is a must visit in Bangkok. It's a shopping experience that we don't get it local. Being the largest market in Asia, navigating it can be confusing. So I don't have a detailed share of this place, but we walked where feelings led us.

Chatuchak Weekend Market is open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The market opens Friday night at 6pm and closes at midnight. On Saturday and Sunday, it’s open all day from 9am to 6pm.We took the BTS from our hotel to Mochit station, did half day, morning to afternoon before our legs decided to call it a day. If you are game for street food, settling lunch in there is not a bad idea. Many choices within. We headed further in and spotted an indoor mall, a relatively new mall, Mixt. There is an air-conditioned food court in there, where we did our lunch. If you spot swing tables and benches from the windows of a building, that's the food court.

If you love pets, there are a few pet shops, with exotic animals within Mixt mall for view. We obviously can't get any home. Walking out of the Mixt building leads you to the Chatuchak pet zone (outdoor) nearby, and there, we spotted many adorable doggies, cats and exotic animals for sale. Like a mini pet zoo for us to view, since we can't get any.

While the floating market and railway market can be extremely touristy, it is a good visit for first timers. Good experience for kids I feel. Any subsequent visits to Bangkok, we will definitely focus on the food and shopping!

To end off, here's a lovely cafe for share, we chanced upon B-Story on the way to Platinum mall. If you are a cafe lover with lovely treats and beautiful set, this is one for visit. Most wonderful that we carved out some time to savour sweets and escape the heat in here. It was some good rest for our legs, from all the walking.

Sums up Bangkok in 4 days, before we moved to Hua Hin. Much fun, and of course, anything after being grounded for 2 years without travel is one to be grateful for.

Riding against the norm

PSLE result day. So different from the past. Parents, one from each student, was held in a holding area, while the P6-ers were in their classroom, receiving their results. We missed witnessing those expressions. Knowing the daughter's result came in tiers, the daughter first, then me (cos I went school with her), and then Daddy and bro who were waiting outside school. This is the first batch of students with scores pegged to Achievement Levels, and I hope the last batch of students having to receive their results during a pandemic. And I realised being in school with her means dealing with various parents asking, "how did it go?" Retrieving results online is actually a good consideration.

I teared! Not for despair. The daughter called me from her classroom upon receiving the results. And nope, she didn't tell me her score over the phone. I teared because her voice was so filled with happiness, joy and satisfaction. She said she was very happy. That voice of joy was so different from the usual happy days. In the record of my memory, it was one that I've never heard of, a voice filled with so much zest in happiness. Even if all else fail, we must have taught her right on emotional choice. I knew, even more assuredly at that moment, nothing else mattered as long as she is happy! At least I don't have to play any role of couselling. When we united again in school, the daughter kept asking why I was tearing. Truly, tears of joy, darling.

Ok, that was the appetizer. The main of this post is sharing on our journey of surviving without tuition throughout the daughter's primary years. Well not exactly, but left that to the last point. Tuition is ubiquitous, and it ain't easy sitting in the minority, riding against the current. Let's agree, not every family fits in the same frame, we all have different dynamics and abilities. But for the many who often asked how we did it. Here's for you.

Wait, a little more story. Once, the daughter's form teacher asked the class if anyone doesn't do tuition? She came back and told me, 3 out of 40 students had their hands lifted. Not surprising, but I just double doubted if we were doing all right. Some people even 'rebuked' that I am not giving my kids enough opportunities to excel in academics. And I confessed, I did find myself guilty many times. Who doesn't want an ace star child? I do! But the cost and journey of cultivating this was just too heavy and intense, the amount of time taken to do enrichment after enrichment can be overbearing for a child. We've witnessed too, star students who did it all without any enrichment help. I held firm to what we had set out to do, and self-comforted that being mediocre isn't fault. There will be opportunities to shine.

After 6 years, on this PSLE result day, I think she managed her expectations well. That already is a job well done! Not aiming overly high or low, but according to your child's ability. Not sure if we did right, or wrong, but here's my not so tiger mum journey set from the beginning.

1. Routine since P1

I set a routine of completing their school work and my home assignments every single day after school. Weekdays. Which means, even if they are done with school work, they will complete my given assignments, a few pages of each subject. I was never ahead of school, so I complemented the taught topics in school, and reinforce with written assignments. The first week of the school year is usually reading, when nothing much was taught in school

In lower primary, the home assignments don't usually take more than 30 mins. So allocate reasonably and according to their ability. After which, they are free to do anything they want! You will realise too, bit size revisions like these ensure that they are test and exam ready anytime without any last minute scramble. So yes, I rely much on assessment books. And of course, it needs to be marked with their mistakes explained and corrected.

2. CCAs day

The greatest asset a lower primary school kid has is time, when CCA and staying after schools aren't intensive. The daughter started rhythmic gym CCA towards the tail end of P1, at thrice a week. Did I still assign work? I did. But lesser than on days without CCA. You'll be surprised that many parents are loading their kids with class enrichment even on CCA days. I merely gave a few pages of work.

Sport is a great balance, but if it's done competitively, the training hours are extremely intensive. They will have to learn mastering the skill of time management. The daughter uses pockets of waiting time in school to complete school work on some days.

3. Upper Primary

School work was extremely intense when she embarked onto P5 and P6. There's practically no time left for home assignments. Which of course, it has to make way for school work and punctual bedtime. We caught up on the days when the load was lighter. And the thing about the daughter is that, she will tell me when is she able or unable to take in more assignments from me. Trust is key. They know their mental load well.

These are the years when you can't buy in too many assessment books. Doing past year papers is a good alternative too.

4. The spouse

It's always important to have your spouse on the same side. I'm glad the man stood through it all with us. Imagine the pain if our spouse were to go on a total different direction from ours, it's just tough. And I'm glad he came in to help the daughter with the challenging maths that evolved at P5 and 6.

Parenting is a partnership of teamwork.

5. The year of PSLE - Online classes

When PSLE was approaching, I panicked! Reality hit harder. The kids were navigating in and out school for lessons, and not all kids are suited to zoom learning style. Embarking on HBL essentially saves time for the kids, travelling time is saved and CCAs are reduced. It is a welcoming rest for most students.

Enrichment turned virtual and convenient! I rode on the opportunity to seek out online PSLE revision lessons for the daughter. If your child is doing academically sound all the years, but you felt the urge to embark on enrichment, consider booster revision lessons in the crucial year, during the holiday months. So you won't pile up the already busy school schedule. So yeap, we did Science during the June holiday, one-off lesson on English composition and Maths during the September holiday. Maths came on as my aunt offered us some free lessons from a centre she owns, giving her a gratitude of shout out here, Nanyang Educational Consultancy, Bendemeer.

And like many, our kids often resent the subject, Chinese. I felt that online learning for it wasn't an easy find, we didn't do any booster for it. Instead, we started the kids on some Chinese dramas during holiday, and tuned in to mandarin radio station during car rides. They are now fans of yes 933.

So yeap, Having a good routine sets the learning consistency. And if the learning attitude is right, your child is all set! This is the learning mould we fitted ourselves in. I'm not here to start a debate, but that's us choosing to have more time and finances for hobbies and treasures. One thing for sure, I grin wide when it comes to thinking about the amount of enrichment fees saved.

The daughter may or may not have done better if we scheduled in some good tuition along the years. But the free time for doing things she loves, and mental health was a good trade off. When I was in doubt, the man often challenged me if tuition for those added marks will be a worthy trade. I guess, that's where this new Achievement Level score system comes in to make exams less stressful in chasing every mark. I've 2 more boys who will have to go through the same system. And boys are extremely different from girls. Don't want to speak early, but we do hope to keep things the same. This year is a whole new game for me, as I embarked on working full time. Learning is for me too.

Happy child, happy childhood, happy memories. These matter. The new learning journey ahead will be lots of hard work with many subjects to juggle. Stay calm. Hold on to the hunger for learning!

A first time PSLE mama

Today I celebrate the daughter's hard work for the past 6 years in primary school, I celebrate surviving this journey with her as a first time PSLE mama, and I celebrate keeping tuition out of schedule till this day. I do need to share our strategy, but will keep that for another post. On top of this celebratory mood, it's the man and my 15th wedding anniversary. How apt that it falls nicely with the daughter's last paper.

Six primary school years may have been long, but it bolts by once your child begins primary school. Over the years, the daughter grew so much in wisdom, strength and independence. There's so much more to rejoice than just how well she conquered the exams. Just thinking of our education system, raising a kid in Singapore is no easy feat. I do deserve a pat on my shoulder on this journey done well.

PSLE is a big acronym. Every child's know. I was so filled with nervousness and worries as the exam days neared, feeling even more intense when her first paper began. It felt like I was going for the exam! But how to stay calm?! It's a nationwide exam that paves the path ahead. The better you do, the wider and brighter your options are! And of course, coming from a parent who doesn't do academic enrichment, I had our expectations very much managed, but not without the absence of worries.

PSLE is over!

First paper went well, she said it wasn't easy, but manageable. Then came Maths, my heart sank when she related that she was mentally challenged by a few questions. I felt my heart-aching for her, but I know that's how notorious our Maths has been. It's not to devastate anyone, but to distinct those who are able and unable to do, to facilitate scores differentiation when it comes to results and school selections. There's just this allocated vacancies in the popular schools, and it doesn't go to everyone. In this new scoring system, where more possible scores fall in the same Achievement Level (AL) range, there is a stronger urge to define.

The daughter related that her classmates were in tears and upset that they couldn't do some questions, or complete the paper. This is a scene not sighted only at PSLE. It happens at all other exams, be it mid year or prelims. We have every parental right to teach and guide them through those moments, growing their mindset. The comfort here is that, majority feels the same. No one is alone.

Not that questions set were out of syllabus, they were a test of learnt concepts with in-depth thinking skill. I've to say though, luck plays some part in the years they do their PSLE. Some years, we do not even get any uproar from parents and some years, we hear noise. Exams are not meant to be easy that everyone aces it the same way. It has to be distinct. No doubt, the years have not been easy with much disruptions to curriculum plans and lessons. But I wouldn't be content if the kids did an easier PSLE based on compassionate grounds. On the other hand, why aren't parents blaming their tuition centres for not preparing the kids well? The amount of fees have to justify right?! I wasn't upset, or outrage at all. It's just the way things are when we try to be rational about it. Rather than trying to find excuses or fault.

We can take the opportunity to teach resilience, not blame. Resilience is such a powerful trait that encompasses the elements of self-control, emotional awareness, positivity, reasoning, self care, patience and so many more! It's key to positive character building. In midst of teaching our child, we learn in the process too. We learn to choose our words and reactions meaningfully. Are we mindful in speaking encouragement and kindness to our dejected child? It's definitely not the time to bring forth the tiger in us. Praise should be made culture in parenting.

The last we want to exemplify is to fault find in others and on the things that won't change. Be it the course of an event or outcome. If it does, it sets an unpleasant precedence for the PSLEs ahead. Anyway, what goes behind any consideration is not something visible to us. Instead, let's focus on helping our kids take responsibility and learning into their own hands, grow in strength, resilience and most importantly kindness. Have good thoughts and speak uplifting words. The world is harsher than this math paper. Life did not promise a bed of roses.

Let's raise a generation of strong and kind warriors! Where each trial, test and exam is a new found maturity for our child.

What's over is unchangeable. Celebrate because both child and parents have partnered hard. While Helen and Ivan are busy weighing their coins, we shall take time to do the things we really enjoy before life starts getting busy again next year. Consider now till the release of results, what our expectations are and how will we manage them. I'm sure another nervous mama as we near that day! Let's always remember that love is unconditional, whatever the grades are.

Going for durian bakes isn't my usual kind of thing. That's because I'm a a 101% durian lover and I would always prefer to go for the real thing. Unprocessed durian, right from its shell.

The Durian Bakery changed my eating experience. Durian bakes and pastries taste almost as good and satisfying, especially made with fresh durians delivered from the plantation, in Pahang, Malaysia.

We had the Dark Chocolate Musang King Durian Mille Crepe Cake which was extremely rich creamy. Made with 39 layers in total - 20 layers of thin handmade crepe skin and 19 layers of thick durian puree. The cake is layered with their signature MSW SilkyGold™ durian puree, blended through a special process to make it extra creamy, and just as tasty as the durian itself! Though creamy, it doesn't make you sick of eating as the crepe skin evens out the cream, giving you a balanced taste.

The cake weighs about 1 to 1.1kg and is sized at about 8 inches, making a good birthday cake option for any durian lover.

PSLE Fuel pack

This is the week, the week where PSLE begins. The year that our eldest is taking this major exam, after 6 years of completing primary school. How did time fly?!

The final 2 years leading up to national exams had been rough. Our school going children were navigating in and out of uncertainties, toggling between physical school and home based learning. We thought 2020 was trying enough for them, then came 2021 which didn't look any prominent.

Pandemic is truly full of surprises.

Now that we are days away from the first paper, I've to say I'm even more anxious. Not about the daughter's readiness of knowledge in battling the papers, but about keeping her and everyone in the family safe and healthy, away from covid. It's highly important that she gets to sit for the papers, the final lap and wrap after all these primary years. No doubt, the challenge is tough with the unseen virus, in an uncontrollable situation. You won't know when the virus hits, or when a quarantine order or leave of absence will be issued.

It has been a year of twists and turns for them. Adding on to the many changes, these kids are the pioneer batch of students to the new AL scoring system, as well as the youngest within the community qualified for vaccination. I can imagine the chaos that their minds have been going through.

I declare our P-Sixers as warriors! Warriors who adapted, who stood strong through changes and showed resilience in the times of uncertainties. And like some previous years, where I made fuel packs for our PSLE friends, I made one for the daughter and some of our friends this year. It was so much more specially made because it's the daughter turn.

Promises we make to our kids

My littlest went to school and told his friends that his mama is a cheater!

The label I had to bear for not bringing him to the beach as promised. Fatigue must have gotten in the way when I casually brushed it aside and said, "let's go another day." While I was upset that he 'shamed' me in school, I got shook up to be reminded that kids take promises very seriously. In words and in plans, promises are substantial to them. Even though it seems trivial to us at times.

That very week, I put procrastination to a halt, hurriedly flowed the promises into the weekend. We did the beach and had his favourite prata for breakfast the next day. Procrastination, saying 'later' and intentionally forgetting are often our convenient excuses. It may seem acceptable in the short run, but spells trouble and distrust in the long run.

Keeping promises help us, parents gain respect, teaches our children to trust us, makes them feel heard and important. In the many years of our parenting journey, there were umpteen times we tell our child, "you promised mama that.... ", but in midst, we neglected that promises are both ways.

The comfort is that we aren't always able to avoid breaking promises, and I confess, I am a repeated offender. Along the years, I have learnt not to make promises out of their tantrums, not to make promises out of my convenience and of course, never promise under the influence of their ridiculous threats. If promises don't happen due to genuine reasons, don't guilt trip, it just means the opportunity for us to explain why.

There's a reason why children forgive and forget easily. Having said that, I do believe they retain selected memories.

In this fast pacing world, we are so often submerged by work, and sometimes fatigue and laziness, while weekend is highly precious to us for recuperating, it is also only the child's opportunity to have more time with the family. Simple promises aren't usually tough to keep to, the tough is finding time to do so. Simple as promises may be, they bring much joy and love to the child when we keep to our words.

Promises are the foundation of a relationship.

As I write, I got reminded that I owe the big boy a promise. One that I blurted out too casually and confidently in thoughts that he will not achieve a certain target, but he did! And I have to now follow through the promise, or perhaps find a way to negotiate it out.

But first, let me correct the littlest that it's not all right to shame his Mama before his friends.

Water Filter with Filtech

Do you use a water filter in your home?

Our tap water is among the cleanest in the world. And even so, water filter in Singapore is common in many households. Getting a water filter very much depends if you are seeking to remove contaminants from water or modify the components of water. These are the two broad categories of water filter.

Though the manual that came with it was rather vague, the setting up was easy. It didn't specify how much initial water is needed to drain before water gets totally cleaned, but we drained about 2 litres for peace of mind. The initial flow of water was carbon black after which it gradually clears up.

It is extremely important to replace it on schedule. Not doing so encourages the growth of bacteria in your filter, that's when safe clean water becomes a risk.

Resigning from a Stay at Home Mum

I have tendered my resignation from a stay at home mum. It's been 8 years staying home with the kids. It wouldn't have been this accidental if our family didn't re-locate to California, Monterey. That was when I left my last job to go as a family. Contributing in a corporate world had always been my ideal. I was all ready to embark onto a life of working mum when we returned from Monterey. But we had plans for a third child.

Which not long later, our eldest progressed into primary school. We realised it was tough to leave her transportation to the school bus. It meant extreme early wakes and late home arrivals. Gradually, I withdrew from the thoughts of going back to work, just so I could chauffeur, tutor, keep the house in order and put home cooked meals on the table. The desire of going back to work was always on the back of my mind. Just a matter of time.

Endlessly, tirelessly and uncomplainingly, I did these with no salary, no bonuses and no leaves, not even medical leaves. The purest form of love and sacrifice defined. These were not possible with deciding to live within the means of single income. We were prudent with our spending, we ate home more than out, and I banished the act of 'shopping' out of my world. After all, the needs of a stay at home mum are extremely down-to-earth. A few good dresses which I already have, and many inexpensive shorts and tees for working the chores in home.

When our second child made it to primary school too, I began to feel the morning void. CCAs kicked in and the kids spend more time in school than before. I knew I needed to be more useful with my personal self. No, blogging and social media-ing are not jobs. They are hobbies. And just last year end, the littlest started full day preschool. I couldn't find any more satisfaction staying home. There’s a stigma around being a stay at home mum, and society doesn’t talk about the loneliness, isolation, and loss of identity that sometimes accompanies this choice. These are real emotions. I will not lie that being a stay at home Mum is always fulfilling. Like any job, there's the highest of highs and lowest of lows.

The kids' junior years are also my prime working years. It's either now or never. I'll probably end up working in a fast food joint if I were to continue sitting in the comfort zone of staying home.

A job opportunity dangled below my nose 2 months ago, I took it on full time without much hesitation. It was time I had do something for myself. The job comes with the flexibility of time, which I'm grateful for. I'm glad to be back into the bigger society, working my mind with bigger opportunities and the healing to fill that empty nest syndrome.

Fast forward today, the eldest is already in the final year of primary school. The most important year with that grand PSLE battle, and I started a full time job. I'm not sure what's ahead, but in our years of having laid the foundation of home routines, it is without worries. I'm contented to have been with them in the large part of their growing years. The kids have grown, we have no more babies although we insist the youngest is still one. Our way of curbing with the pain of growing kids.

And no, there is no replacement a family can get to fill the job of a stay at home mum. I will double up because God made Mothers amazingly strong and awesomely capable in managing the fort.
