Billboard Top 10 Reggae Artistes of 2007

Billboard released its top 10 reggae artist of 2007 and the Marley clan made 3 of the top 10. I was surprise to see Matisyahu at the top position beating out Bob Marley. With all the flak that Buju Banton has received over the past year, he managed to make the number 8 position. Beenie Man also demonstrates that he is still a force to be reckon with and his arch rival Bounti Killa did not make the top 10.

1 - MATISYAHU
Priceless music recordings missing in Jamaica

It is very disturbing to hear that thousands of original recordings of the 1970s music have disappeared from the archives of the former Jamaica Broadcasting Corp. (JBC), reports reaching here said Saturday.

Earlier this week, workers at the newly formed Public Broadcasting Corp. of Jamaica found that a massive collection of vinyl records and compact discs were missing from the old JBC building, Jamaican Information Minister Olivia Grange said.

They had planned to make their first programs with the valuable recordings, she added.

So what does Alicia Keys, Jamaican Dancehall and American Music Awards have in common? Last night at the American Music Awards 2007, Alicia Keys and her accompanying Jamaican artist, Beenie Man, Junior Reid, Chaka Demus and Pliers stole the show. Opening her performance with one of her new hit single, Alicia invited on stage, each Jamaican artist one after the other, churning out back-to-back hits of Jamaican dancehall. Her gyrating hips show how much of an expert she has become in Jamaican dancehall.

It is October 29, 2007 and I am writing from JFK Airport waiting for a connecting flight to Buffalo New York, returning from sunny Sarasota on a personal trip. Sarasota is one of the top retirement communities in the USA. With a population of under 100,000 people it is pretty much a laid back town and remains relatively "American". While driving through one of the main roads in Sarasota, I spot a Jamaican flag flying on what I discovered later as a Jamaican restaurant

There is a saying “Good Content is hard to find”. This is relevant to finding Jamaican related content on the internet especially “Good” content. The internet has grown significantly over the past 5 years. Today we have Facebook, Youtube, Google, Yahoo as the overall popular websites and Jamaicans.com, top5jamaica.com, dancehallregggae.com, Jamaica Gleaner and Jamaica Observer as the popular Jamaican websites. But are we finding good Jamaican content? We just might be settling for second rated content.

Brokencurve providing video hosting

It’s a new way to watch TV. On one of many visits to dancehallreggae.com (well checking out those girls getting on bad), I note a new label on their videos (BC). This was a departure from the usual Youtube embedded videos. So I decided to find out which website was hosting these videos (I thought perhaps another Youtube clone).

Finding the Best of Jamaica Online

It all started more than a year ago, a couple of Jamaicans living overseas looking for great Jamaican content on the Internet. For us it was difficult to find great Jamaican related content and recommending sites to our non-Jamaican friends was always a challenge. Often times we were looking for a specific content and we had to wade through several pages or websites. Search engines are great but there are several limitations.

Yesterday, August 7, 2007 was nomination (significance “Science of the Sevens”). For the most part judging from what I was told by my relatives, it was a success. There were fine incidents of violence. Many supporters of both parties (sorry NDM you are not a factor) were celebrating in the streets.

Who cares who win the next Jamaican Election?

Come August 27th 2007, Jamaicans will decide on the party that will govern the country for the next five years. After 45 years of political independence we are now full fledge experts at selecting parties. But the most important question that should be answered is “Will it make a difference which party wins come election day?

Jamaican Election Campaigns Goes Online

The Jamaican election in 2007 marks a new phase in election campaigning as both PNP and JLP have launched their campaigns online. Particularly the Jamaica Labour Party who is very actively promoting its campaign on Youtube http://www.youtube.com/user/jamaicalabourparty ) . At last count there were more than 20 JLP sponsored videos on Youtube. The PNP has adopted a different strategy perhaps by sheer coincidence or lack thereof, choosing to limit their campaign to the streets or via their website (http://www.pnpjamaica.org ) with a splattering of video clips here and there.

Jamaican Soldiers Protects Queen

A story on the British Telegraph newspaper website titled "Jamaican troops serenade Queen with reggae" provides an interesting spin on the real news behind this article. The first line of the article reveals that Jamaican soldiers have been called up to protect the Queen at Buckingham Palace. They are part of a contingent of 140 Caribbean troops that will fulfil this new role in light of British troop’s deployment in Afghanistan.

I have been reading the story carried in the Jamaican Gleaner about Prophet Phinn and his predictions for the Jamaican election based on the “Science of Sevens”. Being the typical sceptic, I had to do some further investigation on my own. I am not sure how to interpret for fear of being chastise. But who is this Dr Phinn? It turns out that he has a long list of qualifications. He is an international motivational speaker, minister, author, and lecturer, advisor, counselling psychologist, businessman, economic and financial consultant and teacher.

Dear Fellow Jamaicans

I am writing this letter to fellow Jamaican internet users who may be a bit more experience at this thing call web surfing. Over the past few months I have been visiting a number of Jamaican websites but I am a bit confused as there are so many websites out in cyberworld. Except for the Jamaican Gleaner and Jamaican Observer website, I am not sure what sites to spend my precious online time.

Jamaicans Cast Their Votes on August 27th

Portia Simpson has blown the trumpet and declared August 27th as the big day for Jamaicans to cast their votes. I spoke to one of my relatives on the weekend and was told that there is a new theme song title “Nyam Dem Out”. I have been searching for this tune but so far I have come up short. For non-Jamaicans the literal translation means “Eat them Out”. A further explanation of this term means “accept all gifts without promises”. (Anyways I find this hard to translate).
