I don't visit UD as much as I used to because frankly they've pretty much proven themselves irrelevant. I do have them on my RSS feeds and noticed this one day from Denise "buy my book" O'Leary. Looks like building strawmen over at Uncommon Descent is still the norm.

But passing by in the news stream, I noticed a column explaining why Teddy Roosevelt had his flaws as a US Prez. In ”Choosing the right role model” (October 5, 2008), George Will offers some interesting information about Teddy:

"Having read Darwin’s “The Origin of Species” at age 14, and having strenuously transformed himself from an asthmatic child into a robust adult, he advocated “warrior republicanism” (Hawley’s phrase). TR saw virtue emerging from struggle, especially violent struggle, between nations and between the “Anglo-Saxon” race and lesser races. Blending “muscular Christianity,” the “social gospel” — which sanctified the state as an instrument of moral reclamation — and Darwinian theory, TR believed that human nature evolved toward improvement through conflict."

Well, that’s classical Darwin fascism, all right.

"TR invested the materialist doctrine of evolutionary struggle with moral significance for the most manly “races.” He wanted the state to rescue America from the danger, as he saw it, that a commercial republic breeds effeminacy. Government as moral tutor would pull chaotic individualists up from private preoccupations and put them in harness for redemptive collective action."

Sounds to me like a recipe for government paying a ton of tax money for a zillion civil servants to poke their collective nose into the smallest corner of everyone’s business and promote laws against everyone who offends them, on the theory that we are “helping” evolution.

The fact that Roosevelt didn't understand the workings of evolutionary biology in the same way that others who have misused it to institute social Darwinism is no hit on the actual theory. Neither is that fact that this was 100 years ago. The theory has been improved upon exponentially since the time of Darwin and later Roosevelt.

But that makes no difference to myopic echo chamber of Uncommon Descent. They're happy building up the big strawman of "Survival of the fittest" meaning the strongest and most ruthless and claiming it is the current best science concerning Evolutionary theory. It's easy to claim that Evolution causes these nasty bad things when you and the rest of your irrational mob are standing next to the hay stuffed effigy of a piss poor understanding of the science with a torch in your hand.

That or they're just straight lying out of their ass to promote their Creationism.

· California State Supreme Court ruled to allow homosexual couples to marry “legally”

· Columbia, South Carolina (SC), was recently named the 4th friendliest city by GLAAD, an acronym for a homosexual group.

· Columbia, SC city ordinance passed by Columbia City Council– Property owners may not refuse renters presenting themselves as a homosexual couple (www.miamiherald.com )

· Columbia, SC city ordinance passed by Columbia City Council – Crossgender dressing is not only legal but any man who wishes to pretend he is a woman and poses as such may use the “ladies” restroom and vice versa. (www.miamiherald.com)

Provide “Family Values” Education – The Northwest Ordinance of 1787, a federal document, stating that “…religion, morality, and education shall forever be encouraged…” will be used to help bring back moral teaching in our classrooms. Back to the Basics Education using the 3 Rs.

Right – Instill morality to do what is right

Responsibility – Be accountable for actions and freedoms

Interesting article on CNN from TIME about how the prosperity gospel may have helped cause some of the financial issues we are having now. It's worth a read. Nothing too earth shattering.

Has the so-called Prosperity Gospel turned its followers into some of the most willing participants — and hence, victims — of the current financial crisis? That's what a scholar of the fast-growing brand of pentecostal Christianity believes. While researching a book on black televangelism, says Jonathan Walton, a religion professor at the University of California Riverside, he realized that Prosperity's central promise — that God would "make a way" for poor people to enjoy the better things in life — had developed an additional, toxic expression during sub-prime boom. Walton says that this encouraged congregants who got dicey mortgages to believe "God caused the bank to ignore my credit score and blessed me with my first house." The results, he says, "were disastrous, because they pretty much turned parishioners into prey for greedy brokers."

My take on the VP debate

Clearly Biden won but Palin didn't "lose".

Palin managed to change the subject any time the topic was something she wasn't comfortable. I was disappointed in the moderator in not having her hold to the actual question that was posed. She had a few moments of where I wanted to yell FUMBLE and hoped that Joe could fall on the ball, but she managed to pull through. She managed to avoid a number of topics by outright saying she was changing the topic from the start of her answer. "Mind if I talk about energy?". I think it was a mistake to have the moderator that was chosen. In my opinion, the pre debate questions about her book on Obama kept her from being able to hold Palin to the topics.

Joe showed he knows his shit. He was armed with information and it didn't feel like he was reading from prepared remarks unlike Palin. Yes everyone prepares and I'm sure he had answers for each questions before hand, but he sounded like he know what he was talking about the whole debate. Palin did not.

Palin did make me ill with all her apple pie Buffyisms, "darn it".

So Biden wins and Palin stays afloat by not having a Katie Couric interview moment.

WATERBURY, Vt. -- People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals sent a letter to Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, cofounders of Ben & Jerry's Homemade Inc., urging them to replace cow's milk they use in their ice cream products with human breast milk, according to a statement recently released by a PETA spokeswoman.

Dear Mr. Cohen and Mr. Greenfield,

On behalf of PETA and our more than 2 million members and supporters, I'd like to bring your attention to an innovative new idea from Switzerland that would bring a unique twist to Ben and Jerry's.

Storchen restaurant is set to unveil a menu that includes soups, stews, and sauces made with at least 75 percent breast milk procured from human donors who are paid in exchange for their milk. If Ben and Jerry's replaced the cow's milk in its ice cream with breast milk, your customers-and cows-would reap the benefits.

Using cow's milk for your ice cream is a hazard to your customer's health. Dairy products have been linked to juvenile diabetes, allergies, constipation, obesity, and prostate and ovarian cancer. The late Dr. Benjamin Spock, America's leading authority on child care, spoke out against feeding cow's milk to children, saying it may play a role in anemia, allergies, and juvenile diabetes and in the long term, will set kids up for obesity and heart disease-America's number one cause of death.

Animals will also benefit from the switch to breast milk. Like all mammals, cows only produce milk during and after pregnancy, so to be able to constantly milk them, cows are forcefully impregnated every nine months. After several years of living in filthy conditions and being forced to produce 10 times more milk than they would naturally, their exhausted bodies are turned into hamburgers or ground up for soup.

And of course, the veal industry could not survive without the dairy industry. Because male calves can't produce milk, dairy farmers take them from their mothers immediately after birth and sell them to veal farms, where they endure 14 to17 weeks of torment chained inside a crate so small that they can't even turn around.

The breast is best! Won't you give cows and their babies a break and our health a boost by switching from cow's milk to breast milk in Ben and Jerry's ice cream? Thank you for your consideration.
