Unless we get more rain than anticipated of course&#8230; The Flathead and Blackfoot are at fish-able flows but high and off color. The upside to high off color flows &#8211; big fish are on the prowl and you might bump into beast. Or you might just get cold and wet and row off early. Unstable weather ahead with another cold/wet front coming through Wed -Thur. When the weather clears and the sun comes out, the big bugs are gonna go. Until then, here&#8217;s another brown trout from the Missouri.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re looking for a little DIY wade fishing, the Thompson River is clear and fishing decent west of town.</p>

For now it continues to be the Missouri River and still water fishing for the most part. We won&#8217;t bore you with a long winded AI fishing report. You can look through the past few if you want some suggestions on patterns and such. Salmon flies have started to make their appearance on certain drainage&#8217;s and we&#8217;ll be having some fun with those soon. Flathead Lake is full pool, the ground is saturated, and all the rivers have lots of water. We are heading into summer look&#8217;n good! Keep up the rain dances for July and Aug&#8230;</p>

Near 90 degree day time highs kicked up the flows well beyond initial predictions and the rivers look like they&#8217;ll be out of shape for a bit. There&#8217;s also a monsoonal rain event heading our way so things could get ugly on the freestones for the near future. Hard tell&#8217;n not know&#8217;n&#8230; Although our freestone rivers are all blown-out and on the rise, it&#8217;s sure nice to see a bunch of water! The Missouri River will continue to be your best option for reliable fishing unless you don&#8217;t mind doing some lake fishing. We do have lots of lakes to fish in the area for bass, pike, greyling and rainbows. If you&#8217;re new to fly fishing, our lake fishing trips are having great success and the fishing is pretty easy for learning. If you&#8217;re looking for a more serious river outing you&#8217;ll want to head to the Missouri. Our trips over there are also having some great fishing. We&#8217;ve had some superb dry fly fishing recently and the short leash nymphing in the shallows has been stacking numbers. Give us a call if you want to chat about a trip.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The rivers have all dropped a ton the last several days. That being said, the freestones are still big and the water is pretty cold. The warmer weather this weekend will certainly get some bugs moving but it will also get some water moving. The graphs are projected to turn up starting tomorrow. It looks like we have another small bump in flows over the next week and then down she goes. That might be the end of it, scary…</p>
<p>The Flathead River has dropped a ton and is greening up nicely. You should be able to catch some fish out there for the next couple days before it starts back up.  Look for side channels and inside corner shelves to hold fish. It’s still pretty big and there&#8217;s not a lot of fishable water, but you might find a big one in these conditions. Look for risers in the afternoon in the softer side channels, back eddies and slow inside bends.  Luckily the Flathead has some decent snowpack and will likely sustain at higher flows for the next couple weeks, we’ll see.</p>
<p>The Blackfoot River has also dropped a ton and is sitting at a very fishy level. The water is still cold but you should be able to get some good ones on streamers and nymphs down there. Look for some caddis in the afternoons and some possible dry fly fishing also. It’s a great time of year to fish it before the summer traffic and while the bigger fish are fresh on the prowl.</p>
<p>The Clark Fork is really close to that 12k mark we like. There should be a couple days of decent conditions to give it a go.</p>
<p>If the rivers hold for a few days, the warm weather this weekend should get the caddis out and some fish up. Look for caddis, and possibly some residual skwalas and march browns on our freestones this weekend. With the low snowpack in all our drainages, salmon flies will likely pop early. Keep an eye on flows and be prepared for an early emergence of the big bugs.</p>
<p>Whitewater Festival is this weekend in Bigfork so swing by, we will be grilling in the back and having a few cool ones.</p>

March brown mayflies pouring off all afternoon with nemora and skwala stones mixed in, fish were rising river wide and a single skwalla was all you needed. We also didn&#8217;t see another human. It was a nostalgic throwback to how guiding used to be in the late 90&#8217;s &#8211; no people and great dry flyfishing&#8230; Anyway, it looks like the Clark Fork, Blackfoot, and Flathead rivers will hang in there for another day or 2 before they head back up. Keep your eyes on the graphs and give us a call if you want some intel or a guide trip.</p>
<p>The Missouri River is also fishing great and will continue to be a great option through the run-off season. We have guides there for the foreseeable future if you want to get a day in. BWOs, March browns, and caddis are out. Dry dropper/short leash nymphing are productive disciplines and fun methods to fish when you’re not working on risers.</p>
<p>Flathead Valley &#8211; pike, bass, and all area trout lakes will provide some local fishing entertainment as the rivers go in and out of shape over the next month or so. We have a below average snow pack this year so look for great river conditions as run-off should subside early in June this year.</p>
<p>We have lots of new BFA schwag, some custom NRS fishing Dodger raft packages, new flies, and all sorts of new goods trickling in. We are there most days 9-5 so give us a call and swing in.</p>

All the area trout lakes are fishing well and pike/bass are also on the spring feedbag providing additional local options.</p>
<p>We have a ton of balanced leeches, pike/bass flies, and new BFA schwag &#8211; swing by if you&#8217;re heading out. We&#8217;ve been here most days from 10:30 &#8211; 4:30. Call ahead to make sure someone is manning the shop.</p>

<p>The international fly fishing <wbr />film festival consists of premium films produced by professional film makers from all corners of the globe and showcases the passion, lifestyle, and culture of fly fishing. It&#8217;s the gathering place for the fly fishing community and a celebration of friendship, stories, and stoke.</p>
<p>The event is benefiting Cast Hope. Cast Hope is a local Flathead Valley nonprofit organization positively impacting under-privileged kids and their mentors through free fly fishing and outdoor experiences. Through their program, clients build mentoring relationships, fly fishing skills, outdoor knowledge, sustainable practices, and personal values. Cast Hope’s gift of the outdoors empowers each mentoring pair to grow closer as they participate in healthy hobbies together. Snow and rain the last few weeks have the rivers sustained at near run-off levels. While the rivers are much higher than normal for the spring, they&#8217;ve all been dropping and clearing for a week or so. Fishing conditions are shaping up on our western freestones. There is more rain and warm weather in the forecast so we will have see how it goes. <a href="https://water.noaa.gov/#@=-109.4135575,46.638028,5.4721544&amp;b=topographic&amp;g=obsFcst,1!1!1!1!1!1!1!1!1!1!1!1!1!1!1!0!0!0!0!0,0.5,1!1!1!1!0,0,0,false&amp;ab=0,0,#D94B4A,1,1,1,#cccccc,1,0,0,#B243B1,1,0,0,#98E09A,1,false&amp;a=hydrologic,0.35,false&amp;s=0,0,0.9,0.9,false&amp;n=false,#72afe9,0.9,0,0.9,0,0.9,false&amp;p=false,0.75,0,7,0,1,2026,4,2,0,false&amp;d=0,0,1,1,1,1,1,1,#006EFF,1,#006EFF,1,#006EFF,false&amp;q=gauge%3Asrgm8"><span style="color: #0000ff;">NOAA prediction graphs</span></a> are all calling for another couple bumps in flows over the next week.  Keep an eye on the flows if you&#8217;re heading out. If the rivers don&#8217;t come up too much you should be able to catch some fish.</p>
<p><strong>Flathead River Fishing Report</strong> &#8211; The Middle Fork is already turning back up and the main-stem is Flattening out &#8211; these higher flows might stick around for a while. Look for softer side channels, back eddies, shelves and edges with slower holding water. Fish are not going to be spread out along the banks so skip that type of water and focus on slower holding lies. Look for march browns, BWOs, and spring stones in the afternoons, especially on warm calm days when the suns out. Tandem nymph rigs and slow moving streamers in the deep slow runs/holes will likely be the most productive. On warm calm afternoons the foam skwala with a dropper is worth searching with. Also, keep and eye out for afternoon risers when flows stabilize in the coming weeks.</p>
<p><strong>Clark Fork River Fishing Report &#8211; </strong>Like everything else, the Clark Fork is running well above average and carrying some color. 12k is generally about the sweet spot so it&#8217;s getting close. However, the graphs on the Bitterroot and Blackfoot aren&#8217;t dropping much so looks like these flows might be slow to come down. More rain and warmer weather in forecast so we shall see. We are all looking forward to the March Browns and skwalas pouring off&#8230; Meanwhile, a foamie skwala and a dropper or short leashing a turd and worm along the slower banks will produce. Hopefully flows will drop and stabilize so we can hunt with the single dry skwalla.</p>
<p><strong>Blackfoot River Fishing Report &#8211; </strong>The Blackfoot is also well above normal flows and carrying color. The bigger fish typically like the bigger flows and off color water but it&#8217;s still cold and there&#8217;s generally not much bug life here in the early spring. That being said, some opportunities for great fish exist for those who put in time and roll the dice. Stick with streamers and nymphs and you might get lucky. If flows drop and stabilize there could be some dry fly opportunities but generally the Blackfoot is not a reliable spring dry fly fishery. If you are looking for the dry fly fishing, you&#8217;ll want to stick to the Clark Fork or Flathead for better odds, or make the long haul over to the Missouri.</p>
<p><strong>Missouri River Fishing Report &#8211; </strong>Unlike our western freestones, the Missouri is low and clear<strong>. </strong>It could actually use some water and a little color. Cold and windy seems to be the norm this spring. Generally that&#8217;s the early spring situation on the Mo as storms and varying pressure systems move through the eastern front bringing up the W word. If you can find a calm-ish day with some clouds, that&#8217;s what you&#8217;re looking for. Streamers, dries, &amp; dry/dropper rigs are how we like to do. A march brown or skwala with a small Mo style dropper on the lower half of the river is far more entertaining and engaging for the angler that understands. But the bobber is generally the most productive, especially for those who are learning or focused on numbers over method. It&#8217;s all fun&#8230;</p>
<p><strong>Lake Fishing &#8211; </strong>The low elevation lakes are opening up. Rogers is open and the fishing has been easy. Lots of other lakes to explore with bigger rainbows if you&#8217;re not into the greyling thing. But they generally aren&#8217;t as productive. Not many of those big cutties around on Rogers any more, but still a few. Hard to beat a small hare&#8217;s ear/p-tail and a balanced leach when lake fishing. Rogers is generally a shallower rig deal, some of the other rainbow lakes require some deeper depths. Run a long leader and adjust deeper if you&#8217;re not getting action. Also, give a type 3 full sink line a try on a super slow troll if you&#8217;re looking to get some depth and cover more water. If you&#8217;re fishing rogers and don&#8217;t want to stare at a bobber, put on an intermediate tip line and slow retrieve for a little more user involved type of fishing.</p>
<p>Pike fishing is also heating up in the sloughs and valley lakes. Had a friend that got one on top-water the other day so there&#8217;s that.</p>
<p><strong>Early Spring Freestone Fly Patterns </strong></p>
<p>Dries &#8211; Mayfly parachutes and cripples #12-18, foam skwalla stonefly variations #8-14, dark bodied stimis #14-16,</p>
<p>Nymphs &#8211; Pink and Red San Juans, jigs in the PT, Prince &amp; Hare&#8217;s ear variety, perdigons in olive/brown/pink</p>
<p>Streamers &#8211; sparkle minnow variations, olive and black crystal cone buggers, big and flashy, small and flashy, big and drab, small and drab, they all work just depends on the day. Also, try a tandem streamer rig with one of each. Putting a smaller white fly with no weight in front of your bigger weighted fly gives you a great visual to help you track your fly and see flashes/follows better. Is more betterer sometimes.</p>
<p><strong>Mo Patterns</strong></p>
<p>Dries -BWOs, parachute and cripple mayfly variations #12-18, Skwala foam variations, Midges &amp; clusters</p>
<p>Nymphs &#8211; hot bead whatevers, pink sow bugs/scuds, tail water sows, BWO perdigon variation, worms, green machines, midge variations</p>
<p>Streamers &#8211; big and flashy, small and flashy, big and drab, small and drab. See what they want, run a tandem, mix it up.</p>
