Bihar U-19 boys lose in BCCI Associates and Affiliates tournament final

Patna, December 23, 2009: Bihar’s Chhattisgarh jinx that began in the league phase of the tournament remained intact in the final too. Bihar lost to Chhattisgarh by seven wickets in the final of the BCCI Associates and Affiliates U-19 tournament in Raipur on Wednesday.

Much was expected from this side which got their first chance in a national-level BCCI tournament after an isolation of almost 10 years. The way Bihar boys played in final showed they needed more match practice and the nerve to excel in the bigger stage. It could be termed as total batting collapse.

According to information reached here, Bihar won the toss and elected to bat first. But Bihar batting once again crumbled against Chhattisgarh attack spearheaded by Ratik Raj, who claimed three wickets for 18 runs. Sunny Das’s two wickets for 9 runs and Prakhar Raj’s as many wickets for 18 runs further spelt doom as Bihar innings folded for only 105 runs off 38.3 overs.

Ravishankar (24), Kshlay Sharma (16) and Vikash Ranjan (13) could reach the double figures for Bihar.

In reply, Ian Coster once again fired his guns against Bihar. Coster made a brilliant half-century (56 runs). Prakhar Roy scored unbeaten 25 runs as Chhattisgarh reached the target losing three wickets on the way off 17 overs.

Sandip Patil, Director, National Cricket Academy, gave away the prizes. Sanjay Jagdale, Joint Secretary, BCCI, Ratnakar Shetty, CAO, BCCI, Stanley Saldanha, official of BCCI and Ajay Jha, Administrative Manager, NCA and distinguished guests of Chhattisgarh Cricket Association were present at the prize distribution function.

Bihar enter BCCI Associates and Affiliates U-19 tournament final

Patna, December 22, 2009: Bihar stormed into the final of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Associates and Affiliates under-19 cricket tournament outsmarting Meghalaya by nine wickets in their last league match at Bhilai Steel Plant ground here on Tuesday.

Now, Bihar will take on Chhattisgarh in the final tomorrow in Raipur. Bihar won five matches out of six they played so far in this tournament.

According to information reached here, Bihar bowlers called the tune and tormented Meghalaya batting line up with their probing and accurate attack. Ravishankar was the pick of the bowlers claiming four wickets for 32 runs. Satish Roy got two wickets for 16 runs while Kamalesh took one wicket for 17 runs. Meghalaya could muster 82 runs off 34.1 overs. Raj Bishwa (27) and Trijeey (14) were the only two batsmen from Meghalaya to reach the double figures.

In reply, Shashim Rathore played a rapid fire knock of unbeaten 51 runs to guide Bihar to a thumping nine-wicket victory. Shashim hit ten boundaries in his half-century. Ravishankar made 22 runs with four boundaries. Rupam claimed one wicket for 39 runs. Bihar reached the target losing only one wicket.

Patna, December 21, 2009: Bihar tasted their first defeat in the BCCI Associates and Affiliates under-19 cricket tournament in Raipur on Monday. Bihar lost to hosts Chhattisgarh by 25 runs in a league match.

According to information reached here, Chhattisgarh made 117 runs off 50 overs after electing to bat first. Ian Coster hit polished 67 runs to be the top rungetters for Chhattisgarh. Gurujeet scored 31 runs. For Bihar Satish Roy bowled well to capture for wickets for 31 runs while Rajesh Singh took three wickets for 27 runs.

After restricting Chhattisgarh to a moderate total, it was expected that Bihar boys would surpass the target without much hiccups. But that did not happen as Bihar batsmen crumbled and collapsed at 152 all out off 48.1 overs. Kumar Aditya (41), Mangal Mahrour (23) and Rajesh Singh (23) failed to defy the inevitable. Vishal (2 for 20), Sunny (2 for 25) and Gaurav (2 for 34) were the leading wicket-takers for Chhattisgarh.

Grand treble for Ganesh Pantkar

Patna, December 20, 2009: It was the day of Ganesh Pantkar (West Zone) in the Oriental Insurance carrom championships here on Sunday. Pantkar earned a grand treble claiming the men’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles titles.

In the men’s singles final, Ganesh Pantkar outplayed A Ghatilal 12-8, 12-0 while in men’s doubles pairing with Anand, he beat the combination of Malyadri and NA Raj 3-11, 16-0, 14-11. In the mixed doubles final, Pantkar and Aruna beat L Malyadri and Vimala 19-2, 14-2.

G Bharati won the women’s singles title defeating Sangeeta Oak 4-3, 10-6, 7-5. In the women’s doubles final, Asha Nagpal and Sangeeta Oak beat Vimala and Bharati 4-8, 13-0, 8-2.

Former world carrom champion Rashmi Kumari, who was the chief guest at the closing function, gave away the prizes.

Bihar U-16 cricket team felicitated

Patna, December 20, 2009: Randhir Verma Foundation on Sunday felicitated Bihar under-16 cricket team who won the BCCI Associates and Affiliates tournament in Shillong recently, in a colourful function.

MLC Bhumipal was the chief guest while Bihar Cricket Association (BCA) secretary Ajay Narayn Sharma, Anil Sulabh and former international umpire LP Verma were the special guests at the function.

Ranbir, Rashmi to lead Bihar junior kabaddi teams

Patna, December 20, 2009: Ranbir and Rashmi Kumari will lead Bihar boys and girls teams in the 36th Junior National kabaddi championships to be held in Bhopal from December 24.

Announcing the teams, Bihar State Kbaddi Association secretary Kumar Vijay said Rana Ranjit Singh and Shivshankar Singh would be the managers of the boys and girls teams.

Teams: Boys: Ranbir (captain), Veeru, Ujjawal, Jietndra, Bhavesh, Mukesh, Abhishek, Arup, Satishm, Santosh, Bipin Bihari and Avinash. Coach; Neel Kamal.

Bihar tenni-koit teams for Sr. National named

Rajesh shines in Bihar big win over Sikkim

Patna, December 20, 2009: Bihar carved out another impressive 142-run victory over Sikkim in the limited over BCCI Associates and Affiliates under-19 tournament in Raipur on Sunday.

According to information reached here, this was the fourth straight win for Bihar in the tournament.

It was the day of Bihar skipper Kumar Aditya, who played a rapid fire innings of 83 runs with seven boundaries and one six. In form Mangal Mahrour scored a magnificent 81 runs with 5 fours. Bihar piled up 292 runs for the loss of four wickets off 50 overs. Rajesh Singh contributed unbeaten 41 runs down the order.

Rajesh shone again in the second part of the match. In Sikkim’s run chase, Rajesh came as a big hurdle with his bowling. He grabbed four wickets for 39 runs to skittle out Sikkim for 150 runs off 35.1 overs. Sikkim captain Leeyung played sedate knock of 52 runs with five hits to the fence.

West Zone claim Oriental Insurance carrom titles

Patna, December 19, 2009: West Zone clinched the men’s and women’s team titles of Oriental Insurance inter-zone carrom tournament here on Saturday. In both the groups, South Zone got the runners-up titles.

In women’s team event, it was a tie between West Zone and South Zone as both had won two matches and collected four points in the league. But West Zone was declared champion as they had beaten South Zone in the league stage.

Earlier, Devi Singh, director cum general manager (operation), Oriental Insurance, New Delhi inaugurated the tournament playing a board with Dhirendra Verma, general secretary, All-India Oriental Insurance Sports and Recreation Club, New Delhi. Sushil Kumar, Chief Regional Manager, Oriental Insurance, Patna welcomed the guests.

Bihar women soccer player Madhu Kumari gets Rs 1.25 lakh cash award

Patna, December 18, 2009: Local MP Shatrughan Sinha on Friday felicitated former India women soccer team vice-captain Madhu Kumari with a cheque of Rs 1.25 lakh on the occasion of Pandit Dindayal Upadhyay exhibition football match at the outer ground of the Moinul Haq Stadium here.

The cash award was given to Madhu for her continual exemplary performance in women soccer for Bihar as well as for India. The function was organized by BJP Krida Manch, Bihar.

Speaking on the occasion, Shtrughan Sinha said Bihar Government should make a special fund to provide economic support to Bihar players.
Bihar’s Art, Culture and Youth Affairs Minister Renu Devi, who was the guest of honour at the function, said Bihar Government was ready to provide all possible help to budding players.

BJP Krida Manch state president Brajesh Kumar Raman presided over the function and its vice-president Shambhunath Pandey proposed a vote of thanks.

The function began with a exhibition soccer match between Patna and Muzaffarpur women teams. Patna beat Muzaffarpur via tie-breaker in a keenly contested match.

Bihar-Sikkim match washed out

According to information reached here, electing to bat first Bihar piled up impressive 277 for the loss of nine wickets off 50 overs. All the frontline Bihar batsmen came well with the bat. Mangal Mahrour scored a polished half century (50 runs off 83 balls). His knock contained six hits to the fence. Pawan Kumar (32, 55 balls, 3x4), Nishant (44, 66 balls, 3x4), Rajesh (45, 36 balls, 4x4, 2x6) and Ravi Shankar (30 not out, 14 balls, 4x4, 1x6) were the effective rungetters for Bihar. Jenius of manipur took 5 wickets for 36 runs while Jyotish captured 2 wickets for 39 runs.

Patna, December 15, 2009: Bihar earned a massive 9-wicket win over Arunachal Pradesh in their second match of the BCCI Associates and Affiliates under-19 tournament at Bhillai on Tuesday.

According to information reached here, electing to bat first Arunachal Pradesh could muster only 70 runs off 19.4 overs. Rajesh and Satish ripped through the Arunachal Pradesh batting line up sharing six wickets between them. Rajesh finished the day with three wickets for 11 runs while Satish took as many wickets conceding 14 runs. Abhishek claimed two wickets for 12 runs.

In reply, Bihar raced to the target losing only one wicket. Sashim Rathour made a quick-fire 35 runs off 10 balls. Mangal Mahrour scored unbeaten 24 runs off 11 balls.

ECR, Danapur clinch Moinul Haq Trophy

Patna, December 13, 2009: East Central Railway (ECR) Danapur clinched the 61st Bihar State and inter-district football championships for the Moinul Haq Trophy beating defending champions Patna 4-2 in a thrilling final at DSA ground in Purnia on Sunday.

According to information reached here, ECR Danapur players dished heart-out performance in the final. They took commanding 2-0 lead in the first half. They looked like an unbeatable side right from very start of the game. Anwar Hussain scored the first goal for ECR Danapur in 15th minute. Manoj Kumar increased the margin in the 26th minute (2-0).

In the second half too, Railwaymen played brilliant cohesive football giving no chance to rival forwards to sneak into their territory. Pankaj Tudu of ECR Danapur was the hero of second half. The agile striker scored twice, first in the 67th and second in the 77th minutes to take Danapur tally to 4-0.

After taking invincible 4-0 lead, Danapur men let loose the reign in the fag end of the second half as Patna succeeded in scoring two goals. R K Mahto in the 80th and Durga Charanto in the 85th minutes scored the two goals to reduce the margin to 2-4.

Md Sohib of ECR Danapur was adjudged man of the match while Jiten Lohar of Patna was declared man of the tournament. Former MP Rajesh Ranjan Yadav alias Pappu Yadav gave way the winners’ trophy.

Bihar started their title hunt in style beating Nagaland by 3 wickets in the opening match of BCC Associate and Affiliate members under-19 cricket tournament at Bhillai on Saturday.

According to information reached here, batting first Nagaland scored 221 runs for the loss of nine wickets off 50 overs. Vikas top scored with 66 runs while Lotha made 28 runs. Kamalesh Singh captured three wickets for 37 runs and Satish Roy took two wickets for 30 runs.

In reply, Bihar achieved the target losing seven wickets off 42.5 overs. Rajesh Singh and Aditya made fluent half centuries. Rajesh made 62 runs while Aditya scored 59 runs. Ravishankar (31) and Mangal (38) were other notable run scorers for Bihar.

EC Railway, Samastipur earn third place

Patna, December 12, 2009: East Central Railway, Samastipur division earned the third place beating Siwan 2-1 in the 61st Bihar state and inter-district football championships for the Moinul Haq Trophy at the DSA ground in Purnia on Saturday.

According to information reached here, Bimal Tudu of Siwan opened the account in the 15th minute to give his side 1-0 lead. Siwan failed to maintain the lead as Ajit Sanyal of Samastipur scored the eqaliser in the 20th minute. Narayan Prasad increased the margin in the 35th minute.

After 2-1 lead in favour of Samsatipur in the first half, the match did not produce worthwhile soccer in the second half. Ajit Sanyal of Samastipur was declared man of the match.

Moinul Haq Trophy football: Patna enter final

Patna, December 11, 2009: Patna entered the final of the 61st Bihar state and inter-district football championships for the Moinul Haq Trophy defeating Siwan by a solitary extra time goal at DSA ground in Purnia on Friday. In the Sunday’s final Patna will take on East Central Railway, Danapur division.

According to information reached here, after a barren first half and regulation time play, Jiten Lohar of Patna scored the match winner in the 11th minute of the extra time. Jiten was later adjudged man of the match. Earlier, Lohar had netted a record eight goals against Samastipur in the quarterfinal.

Patna, December 10, 2009: East Central Railway Danapur edged out EC Railway, Samastipur 6-5 via tie-breaker to enter the final of 61st Bihar state and inter-district football championships for the Moinul Haq Trophy at DSA ground in Purnia on Thursday.

According to information reached here, Samastipur opened the account in the 55th minute after a barren first half when Umashankar found the target. Danapur fought back putting immense pressure on rivals’ citadel as Anwar Hussain brought the much needed eqaliser just two minutes before the long whistle.

In tie-breaker Danapur marksmen hit the target in all five attempts while Samastipur could convert four. Apurva Nandi of Danapur was adjudged man of the match.

Govt says no to order an inquiry into wrestlers doping

New Delhi, December 10, 2009: The Government has no proposal to order an inquiry in the circumstances leading to the failure of our wrestlers in doping tests. There is well laid down procedure under the National anti-Doping code to handle dope positive cases.

These are first looked at by the disciplinary panel and in the event of the disciplinary panel confirming the result, the affected athlete can appeal before the Appellate Panel. The decision of the Appellate Panel is final. On first violation of the anti-doping code, the defaulting athlete is liable for a two years ban and any subsequent offence attracts life ban.

Wrestlers who have tested positive are bound by the penalty imposed by the competent authority. The international federation has not imposed any general ban on the participation of Indian Wrestlers in the Commonwealth Games 2010.

This was stated by the Minister of State for Youth Affairs & Sports, Pratik Prakashbapu Patil in the Rajya Sabha today, in a written reply to a question by Varinder Singh Bajwa.

Giving a boost to rural sports through PYKKA

New Delhi, December 10, 2009: Government of India introduced a centrally sponsored scheme entitled ‘Panchayat Yuva Krida Khel Abhyan’, in 2008-09, for creation of basic sports infrastructure in all village and block panchayats and for conducing sports competitions at blocks, districts, states and national level of the country.

The XIth Five Year Plan outlay for this scheme is Rs.1500 crore. The scheme envisages to cover around 2.50 lakh village panchayats and 6,400 block panchayats (including their equivalent units) in a phased manner over a period of 10 years at an annual coverage of 10% (and the coverage will be 20% in the case of special category states including North Eastern States).

The scheme is implemented through the state governments / UTs administrations. An amount of Rs. 25.98 crore was, so far, sanctioned / released to Government of Andhra Pradesh during 2008-09 and 2009-10 for creating basic sports infrastructure in 2190 village panchayats and 113 block panchayats there. Further, for conducting competitions in 296 blocks and 22 districts and for state level competition during 2009-10, admissible grant to the State is Rs.3.55 crore against which Rs. 0.95 crore has already been released.

This was stated by the Minister of State for Youth Affairs & Sports, Pratik Prakashbapu Patil in the Rajya Sabha today, in a written reply to a question by Mohd. Ali Khan.

Patna, Siwan and Samastipur reach semifinals

Patna, December 9, 2009: Semifinalists were spotted in the 61st Bihar State and inter-district football championships for the Moinul Haq Trophy at DSA ground in Purnia on Wednesday. Patna, Siwan and EC Railway, Samastipur joined EC Railway, Danapur in the semifinals.

According to information reached here, Patna trounced Saran 3-0 with brilliant hat-trick of goals from RK Mahto that he scored in the 6th, 10th and 15th minutes of the match.
Patna will take on Siwan in the first semi final on Friday.

Siwan outplayed Munger 3-1. Md Nasim Khan was the hero of Siwan win as the agile striker found the target in the 25th and 58th minutes while Krishna Shakia scored the other one in the 15th minute. Banshi Kumar of Munger netted the lone goal for in the 16th minute.

Samastipur crushed Bhojpuir 4-2 in the last quarterfinal match. Ramesh Kumar of Samastipur scored all the four goals in a row in the 15th, 19th, 65th and 77th minutes. Rakesh of Bhojpur scored two goals in the 53rd and 55th minutes. Samastipur will clash with Danapur in the first semi final on Thursday.

Patna, December 8, 2009: East Central Railway, Danapur edged past hosts Purnia 7-6 via second sudden death in a pulsating quarterfinal match of the 61st Bihar state and inter-district football championships for the Moinul Haq Trophy in Purnia on Tuesday. With this win, Danapur entered the semifinals.

According to information reached here, both the teams were locked 1-1 at the end of regulation time. Fagu Tudu of Purnia scored the first goal in the 55th minute while Md Wahid of Danapur leveled the score in the 70th minute.

In the tie-breaker, both the teams scored four goals each. In the sudden death both the teams scored one goal each. The second sudden death came into force and Danapur managed to break Purina defence and scored the match winning goal and get ticket for the semifinals.

Mob attacks Danapur players, 5 injured
Later in the evening about 100 people said to be the supporters of Purnia team attacked Danapur players with lathis and other conventional weapons and injured five of them when the players were at their camp at Zila School.

The District Football Association Purnia alleged that police administration had failed to provide security to the players despite repeated request by the organizers.

Police reached the spot half an hour after the incident and took six persons into the custody.

Jiten Lohar nets eight goals as Patna humble Samastipur 15-0

Patna, December 7, 2009: Jiten Lohar struck a record eight goals as Patna humbled Samastipur 15-0 in the 61st Bihar state football championships for the Moinul Haq Trophy in Purnia on Monday.

According to information reached here, in the other match of the day, Saran beat Darbhanga 2-1. With this victories both Patna and Saran moved into the quarterfinals.

Samastipur was just no match to Patna, as the latter scored flurry of goals. Pritam Bahadur (three) Shahbaz (two) and R K Mahto (two) were the other goal scorers. Jiten Lohar was declared man of the match.

In the second match, Santosh Kumar of Saran scored first goal in the 29th minute. Ranjan Kumar of Darbhanga brought in the equaliser in the 32nd minute. Rais Alam of Saran scored the match winner in the 35th minute. Raju Kumar of Saran was adjudged man of the match.

Earlier on Sunday, Munger, Siwan and Danapur won their respective matches. Munger beat Bettiah 4-1, Siwan beat Mansi 3-0 while East Central Railway, Danapur beat Gaya 2-0.
