<p>Tomorrow is not yet written. Choose to be an author of a better future for Bend. Vote <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.gobend2020.com/" target="_blank">YES for the Transportation Bond</a> (Measure 9-135) as well as for <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.meganforbend.com/" target="_blank">Megan Perkins</a>, <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://melaniekebler.com/" target="_blank">Melanie Kebler</a>, <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://broadmanforbend.com/" target="_blank">Anthony Broadman</a>, and <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.ritaforbend.org/" target="_blank">Rita Schenkelberg</a>. When you do, you&#8217;re giving a block of forward-thinking City Councilors real power to enact change on our streets.</p>

<p>Kebler, Broadman, Perkins and Schenkelberg (listed in order of the Council Position they are running for: 1 through 4) all share a refreshing view of how life can be organized in Bend: affordable housing as tied to human-scaled transportation choices wrapped in equity. With Councilors Abernethey and Moseley choosing not to run for re-election, Bend has a historic opportunity to vote in a block of candidates who believe in the free movement of people not in cars. </p>

<p>That said, if you&#8217;re a student of the City&#8217;s budget, you&#8217;ll appreciate the fact that most of the tax base that supports the city is largely pre-allocated. Councilors, regardless of good intentions, are often left wondering how to pay for the initiatives they&#8217;d like to enact. Enter the pending <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.gobend2020.com/" target="_blank">Transportation Bond</a>. We have the chance to not only fund active transporation (up to $36 Million which is a figure that varies based on how you define a pro-walking and biking project) like we have never done before, but also to put in place the policymakers who will act on the <a href="https://www.bendoregon.gov/city-projects/transportation-system-plan" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Transportation System Plan&#8217;s</a> lofty goals. I cannot remember when the Bend electorate have been in a position to ensure both funding and policy simultaneously moves towards more balance in our transportation system. </p>

<figure class="is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-1 wp-block-gallery columns-2 is-cropped"><ul class="blocks-gallery-grid"><li class="blocks-gallery-item"><figure><img decoding="async" loading="lazy" width="400" height="533" src="http://www.bikearoundbend.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/ballot-kebler-and-broadman.jpg" alt="" data-id="19073" data-full-url="http://www.bikearoundbend.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/ballot-kebler-and-broadman.jpg" data-link="http://www.bikearoundbend.com/ballot-kebler-and-broadman/" class="wp-image-19073" srcset="http://www.bikearoundbend.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/ballot-kebler-and-broadman.jpg 400w, http://www.bikearoundbend.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/ballot-kebler-and-broadman-225x300.jpg 225w" sizes="(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /></figure></li><li class="blocks-gallery-item"><figure><img decoding="async" loading="lazy" width="400" height="533" src="http://www.bikearoundbend.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Ballot-Schenkelberg-and-Perkins.jpg" alt="" data-id="19074" data-full-url="http://www.bikearoundbend.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Ballot-Schenkelberg-and-Perkins.jpg" data-link="http://www.bikearoundbend.com/ballot-schenkelberg-and-perkins/" class="wp-image-19074" srcset="http://www.bikearoundbend.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Ballot-Schenkelberg-and-Perkins.jpg 400w, http://www.bikearoundbend.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Ballot-Schenkelberg-and-Perkins-225x300.jpg 225w" sizes="(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /></figure></li></ul></figure>

<p>We have a unique chance to create the beginnings of a connected network of targeted improvements for bicycle commuters and pedestrians. This point is doubly important based on how road improvement projects are actually implemented in Bend &#8211; each individual project&#8217;s budget (and they won&#8217;t all hit at once) must be approved by City Council prior to a project moving forward. All the vagaries (see <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.bendbikes.org/bend-bikes-endorses-go-bond/" target="_blank">Bend Bike&#8217;s critique of the Bond measure</a>) built into the <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.bendoregon.gov/city-projects/safe-travel#Map" target="_blank">list of projects associated with the Bond</a> leave opportunities for future Bend City Councils bent on implementing equity to ensure that walking and biking are truly viable choices for Bend residents.</p>

<p>Vote by November 3rd by dropping your ballot into an official Deschutes County Ballot dDop Box. Find those locations <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.deschutes.org/clerk/page/ballot-drop-box-locations" target="_blank">listed here.</a></p>

Bend Bikes has a new family-run ride on <strong>September 29th @ 1:30pm</strong> to celebrate a fantastic off-street trail many haven&#8217;t yet discovered.

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-2276" src="https://www.bendbikes.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/The-marina.jpg" alt="" /></figure>

They&#8217;ll start and end at <a href="https://www.deschutesbrewery.com/pubs/the-marina/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Deschutes Brewery’s “Marina”</a> at the corner of SW Columbia and SW Shevlin Hixon, across from River Bend Park in the Old Mill. Both out-and-back route options are mostly on paved portions of the <a href="https://www.bendparksandrec.org/trail/haul-road-trail/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Haul Road Trail</a>, but there are some loose gravel sections, so you might want to leave your skinny-tire bike at home.

<h2>Registration Required</h2>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote">Registering online: <a href="https://www.smartwaiver.com/w/5951d05a68b19/web" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Click here</a>.</blockquote>

<h1>Two Route Options</h1>

<h3>Long Route &#8211; 14 miles</h3>

<strong>
</strong>You&#8217;ll be separated from car traffic for the full length of this 14 mile round trip.  It&#8217;s on a mix of paved as well as soft, unpaved gravel trail.  This out-and-back crosses a few roads, though most are small but for Reed Market Road.  After 400&#8242; of elevation gain, our turn-around point will be the USFS <a href="https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/deschutes/recarea/?recid=81738">Cascades Lakes Welcome Station.</a>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-2282" src="https://www.bendbikes.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/leaning-on-a-bike.jpg" alt="Haul Road Trail" /><figcaption>Wide tires are nice for the loose gravel sections.</figcaption></figure>

<h3>Family-friendly Route &#8211; 9 miles</h3>

Approximately 9 miles in length, this option is on the Haul Road Trail as well, but skips the last two+ miles of climbing to the Welcome Station. The turn-around for this route is near the trail underpass at the Cascade Lakes Highway.

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-2279" src="https://www.bendbikes.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/An-ant-at-the-underpass.jpg" alt="" /><figcaption>The Haul Road Trail as it passes under the Cascades Lakes Highway.</figcaption></figure>

Meet back up after the ride back at the Marina.  There will be drinks and food for sale.  They&#8217;re asking for a donation of $5 per person to help cover costs for the ride.  But if you can&#8217;t afford that, come join our fun anyway!

Bend Bikes is putting on their annual Holiday Lights Ride this December 2nd @ 6:30pm. Meet up inside at the Bend Senior Center (1600 SE Reed Market Road, Bend) for an evening full of fun: a ride, food and drinks, and a raffle.</p>
<p>Their tour will be a leisurely, family-friendly ride along part of the Larkspur Trail, one of Bend’s best kept secrets: a 4 mile off-street trail that runs north/south on Bend’s east side. Conditions will dictate how far you&#8217;ll go along the trail; last year, there was a little bit of snow <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/14.0.0/72x72/1f609.png" alt="😉" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> <div id="attachment_1087" style="width: 610px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1087" decoding="async" loading="lazy" src="http://www.bendbikes.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Riders-on-snow-mound.png" alt="A few hearty riders at last year&#039;s event." width="600" height="342" class="size-full wp-image-1087" /><p id="caption-attachment-1087" class="wp-caption-text">A few hearty riders from last year&#8217;s event.</p></div> All are welcome: joggers, walkers, strollers, lolligaggers and, of course, those who get around by bicycle. Even little ones on training wheels can happily join the fun as the grade is minimal.</p>
<div style="float:right; font-size:12px; padding: 0 10px 10px 10px; border:4px solid #ccc; margin:1px 0 10px 10px; background-color:#F0F0F0">

Holiday Lights Ride poster where you work.<br />
<a href="http://www.bendbikes.org/hang-event-poster/" target="_blank">Click here to send them a message</a>.
</div>
<p>The Larkspur Neighborhood Association will be helping to spread the word with door-to-door requests of residents who border the trail to decorate their backyards and help light up the Larkspur Trail during the month of December.</p>
<p>After the ride, there will be a gathering back at the Senior Center with food and drink (courtesy of <a href="https://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/stores/bend" target="_blank">Whole Foods Market Bend</a>), beer (courtesy of <a href="https://www.deschutesbrewery.com/" target="_blank">Deschutes Brewery</a>), and a raffle.  Raffle items to include prizes from <a href="http://www.bendelectricbikes.com/" target="blank">Bend Electric Bikes</a>, <a href="http://www.getcairn.com/" target="_blank">Cairn</a>, <a href="http://www.hydroflask.com/" target="_blank">Hydroflask</a>, <a href="http://www.primalcutsmeatmarket.com/" target="_blank">Primal Cuts</a> as well as a grand prize of a $150 gift certificate from <a href="http://bendvelo.com/" target="_blank">Bend Velo</a> to go towards a <a href="http://www.jlivingstonbikes.com/" target="_blank">J.Livingston bike build</a>.</p>
