Bike Walk Mississippi serves as the only statewide bicycle and pedestrian organization serving the state of Mississippi.

We are working hard to fight for the rights of ALL users of the road, for increased personal freedom & safety when choosing modes of transportation & for infrastructure to allow a wider variety of transportation & recreational options.  We welcome individuals, families, communities, schools, businesses, nonprofits, government officials to join us in the cause to encourage the creation, expansion and improvement of bicycling and pedestrian facilities and programs throughout our beautiful state!  We are the collection of voices throughout the state of Mississippi standing up for the rights of bicyclists and pedestrians and we know that no matter how often you might bicycle or run, a more pedestrian & bicycle friendly state benefits everyone!

2. WEAR YELLOW!  This year on Wednesday, May 16th, in conjunction with the National Ride of Silence, Bike Walk Mississippi will hold the 2nd annual Wear Yellow Day to honor fallen cyclists and encourage a mutual respect on Mississippi roads. 

On June 10th, 2011, over 1000 people around the state and around the nation stood in solidarity with cyclists and pedestrians in Mississippi to show their support of Jan Morgan, John Paul Frerer and others who have been killed or injured while riding or running Mississippi roads. Walk Mississippi is encouraging citizens across the state to wear yellow or high visibility items of clothing in honor of bicycle accident victims.  One of the ways in which we can make substantial change is to increase the bicycle friendliness of the roads in our state, to keep our law enforcement officers and public officials accountable, build power, raise awareness and show that we want better.

There are many bicyclists and pedestrians are killed or injured on Mississippi’s roads every year.  Here are just a few of their stories:

Our prayers are with the family of Dr. Gary Holdiness, killed on the Natchez Trace on Sunday, May 6th, 2012.  More info to follow.

Tragedy struck in Oxford when Mrs. Kevser Ermin, 27, a doctoral student in health and kinesiology was hit on Highway 314 (Old Sardis Road). She was hit by a car driven by a 21 year-old Ole Miss student, who after hitting Ermin, continued driving for about a mile before turning around and returning to the scene of the wreck.  

On May 22nd, Jan Morgan, 57, of Starkville was biking with a friend on an open stretch of Highway 50 when a sedan struck her from behind. The sedan, traveling around 55 miles per hour, allegedly then carried Morgan 200 yards on its hood before stopping.  Morgan was in a coma for 5 weeks on a ventilator and suffered massive head trauma, broken ribs and sternum, fractured fingers and numerous other injuries.  She was airlifted to the North Mississippi Medical Center, where she was placed in the CCU followed by rehab at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, and at the Quest Center in Jackson.  

On August 13^th, 2009, the day before he was to begin his senior year of high school, John Paul Frerer was struck by a pickup truck while riding his bicycle.  He was cycling from Tupelo to Oxford as part of his training for a 120 mile race.  Although he was rushed to the hospital after the collision, Frerer died that morning.    **The “John Paul Frerer Bicycle Safety act”,  requiring motorists to give at least 3 feet when passing bicyclists on Mississippi’s roads. went into effect in Mississippi on July 1, 2010.

National Bike Month is an opportunity to celebrate the unique power of the bicycle and the many reasons we ride. Whether you bike to work or school; to save money or time; to preserve your health or the environment; to explore your community or get to your destination, get involved in Bike Month in your city or state — and help get more people in your community out riding too!

Mississippi Bike Month Events:  

• The National Ride of Silence is scheduled for Wednesday, May 16th
• Cyclists nationwide will take to the roads in a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. The Ride of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph, wear helmets, follow the rules of the road and remain silent during the ride. These rides aim to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways. The ride is also a chance to show respect for and honor the lives of those who have been killed or injured. *Tupelo, Ridgeland and Oxford are all holding a Ride of Silence event in 2012; see schedule below for details.

Why wear YELLOW or High Visibility Clothing?  

People take notice when people wear Yellow or High Vis clothing in everyday life.  Since these are colors that the majority of bicyclists wear when riding on the roads, we want people (whether they bike or not) to identify themselves as advocates for the safety of bikers, walkers, runners on Mississippi roads. Bike Walk Mississippi recognizes that any tragedy involving the death of a pedestrian or bicyclist evokes a sense of anger; however, but we believe in order to be most successful in our cause, we must funnel this rightful feeling into positive action.

We believe wearing Yellow is a peaceful opportunity for citizens of all ages to have open dialog with those who do not regularly ride (or run) about the importance of safety and inclusiveness of all users of the roads. Please join us on Wednesday, May 16th as we stand up together for the rights of pedestrians, runners and bicyclists across our state.

What should I say when someone asks me why I’m wearing yellow or High Vis Clothing? And, what if they say, “Well, I don’t even ride a bike, so how does this effect me?” 

EVERYONE of us is a PEDESTRIAN!  First of all, this isn’t just about bikes, we want safety for ALL users of the roads; this is not something intangible, this effects EVERYONE who walks, runs, uses crosswalks, children, parents including people of all races, abilities, income levels, ages.  Walking is part of who we are – we deserve the right to do so safely!

We are ALL part of a FAMILY!  When you someone walking, running or biking, remember that they could easily be your brother, mother, father, sister, son, or daughter.  Encourage everyone to imagine this the next time they see someone who is biking, walking or running. Let’s treat all users of the road, with same respect we’d show to our loved ones.

Do you drive a CAR? The truth is, most of us do not use our bicycles as our primary mode of transportation in Mississippi; so what does this mean?  The vast majority of us are behind the “wheel” of our car more than using our bike “wheels”.  Step into the driver’s seat and embrace this opportunity to be PART OF THE CHANGE TODAY!

• Use this opportunity to ask if they have heard about the “3 feet law”?  Did they know that this law existed?  Do they know that the law suggests 3 feet MINIMUM when passing a bicyclist on the road?
• When you are in your car:
• Make a commitment to stop distracted driving
• Make a commitment to not drive under the influence
• Make a commitment to pay attention to the roads
• Give at MINIMUM 3 feet when passing a runner, walker or bicyclist.
• Show everyone on the road that you support safety on our roads by purchasing a “Share the Road” license plate at your local tag office; what better place to spread the message than to other motorists! * All proceeds from the Share the Road license plate go to bicycle and pedestrian efforts in Mississippi.

Are you SOUTHERN?  Something we know about southerners is that we are proud of our SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY!  This should extend toward how we treat others on Mississippi roads.  Encourage others to embrace their southern hospitality,  in fact, we encourage southerners to go beyond simply giving 3 feet, we say give “3 feet AND a wave”!

Let’s celebrate a Victory!  We have Mississippi Senator Thad Cochran and ALL OF YOU to thank!! 

We are happy to announce that the Cardin-Cochran amendment was incorporated into the Senate’s transportation bill!   This amendment will allow our local governments, school systems, and metropolitan planning organizations to have a voice in how states allocate funds for making bicycling and walking in Mississippi! We are even more pleased to announce that after the Senate had said they would not accept any amendments to the bill on the floor, allowed this into the short list (out of 200+) that were included!  This goes to show you how strong our voices for more livable cities, health and local decision making can be!  Thank you so much to everyone who sent a letter to either of our Mississippi Senators!  Want to know more?  Click HERE to find  much more detail of what this amendment will mean if the Senate Transportation Bill passes.

Now, let’s keep our voices strong and send our Thanks!  There are many people to thank for this amendment, but Senator Thad Cochran is at the top of the list!  Please send a quick thank you email to: Senator@cochran.senate.gov to thank him for the “Cardin-Cochran Amendment to MAP-21″ He is truly a champion on biking, walking, running, health and LOCAL government! Let’s definitely take some time to celebrate but it’s not over yet.

So, what’s Next?:

We still have work to do to get an acceptable Transportation Bill passed in both the Senate and the HOUSE!  (Expect a big fight here).  We will be asking for your help in the next few weeks to: 1. Ensure passage of the Senate bill and 2. To restore bicycle and pedestrian funding in the House!  We will keep our voices strong until Congress hears the urgency for Mississippi to support bicycle and pedestrian programs and infrastructure for our children, for our economy, for our safety and for our health!

Bike Walk Mississippi will representing the needs of bicyclists, runners and pedestrian in D.C. at the National Bike Summit held from March 20-22nd.  We will be presenting each Representative and Senator with support letters from communities around the state, economic studies and individual letters from people like you!   If you represent any biking, walking, running, health, city government, planning/design, business, or if you just care about biking and walking, email us at: bikewalk@bikewalkmississippi.org and we will send you a template letter for you to sign —- we’ll even hand it straight to your Congressman for  you!  We’ve got 3 weeks, ready, set, GO! 

URGENT ACTION ALERT:  There is a REAL chance that the Senate Transportation will eliminate all bicycle and pedestrian funding!  This funding is important because it provides the infrastructure and programs allowing Mississippians and people around the nation to bike and walk.  With the epidemic of obesity facing Mississippi, we CANNOT allow this to happen!

The good news:  We have been working with Senator Cochran’s office encouraging him to support these programs and we are proud to say that he has agreed to CO-SPONSOR the amendment now in the Senate to preserve these funds.  The great thing about this bi-partisan amendment is that it doesn’t simply “preserve” the funds; it actually gives the power back to the LOCAL governments and MPO’s to decide what WE think should be done in our own communities!   Senator Cochran is on board, now we just need to focus our attention on Senator Wicker’s offices and tell him “WE BELIEVE IN LOCAL”

We need our voices to be heard and FAST!  Here’s what we asking you to do TODAY!

1. We are asking that you send a letter to Senator Wicker’s office asking him to come alongside Cochran and support this bi-partisan amendment. We desperately need Senator Wicker’s support for this amendment to pass!!!! You can send him an email by clicking HERE.

The Safe Routes to School National Partnership is hiring a full-time state advocacy organizer in Mississippi.  This position would continue to work very closely with Bike Walk Mississippi and MDOT’s Safe Routes to Schools coordinator in our efforts to advance active transportation and more livable communities in Mississippi.

BWM is now leading a statewide effort to educate citizens about the law and how it affects motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.   Please join us in our efforts to educate Mississippians about the 3 feet law & remind everyone to Share the Road!  Here are 3 steps you can take today to support the Share the Road efforts in Mississippi!

1. Become a member or make a donation to Bike Walk Mississippi.
