NASA Engineer Voted Grand Prize Winner of Indian Motorcycle's 'The Wrench: Scout Bobber Build Off'

Alfredo Juarez of Las Cruces, New Mexico to be Awarded $10,000 & a Feature Story in Hot Bike Magazine on his Custom Indian Scout Bobber

Indian Motorcycle, America’s first motorcycle company, announced its grand prize winner of The Wrench: Scout Bobber Build Off. Alfredo (Fred) Juarez, a NASA engineer from Las Cruces, NM, and his custom Indian Scout Bobber received the most fan votes and has been named grand prize winner of the national contest. As the grand prize winner, Juarez will be awarded $10,000 and will receive a feature story in Hot Bike Magazine on his custom Indian Scout Bobber.

Juarez’s bare-bones chopper, featuring a completely custom hardtail frame, drew inspiration by a number of different mechanical works of art, both in and out of the motorcycle industry. Juarez sites the Indian Scout FTR1200 Custom, RSD Indian Scout custom builds and David Beckham’s garage company, Knuckle, as inspiration.

“I cannot thank Indian Motorcycle enough for the opportunity. Not only was this a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but the three-month build period created an incredible bonding experience for me and my family,” said Juarez. “And of course, thanks to all the fans who took the time to cast their vote. I know it wasn’t easy to pick one because the other two bikes are incredible. Hats off to PJ and Christian for their work. It’s been an incredible ride and I cannot thank everyone enough for their support.”

The Wrench: Scout Bobber Build Off was a national custom motorcycle contest designed to spotlight non-professional builders who wrench for the passion and not the pay. The program received more than 100 submissions, which were narrowed down to 12 by a judging panel of professional builders and experts, including Roland Sands, Satya Kraus, Jason Paul Michaels and Hot Bike Editor-in-Chief Jordan Mastagni.

After a two-week fan vote, Alfredo Juarez, along with PJ Grakauskas (an OSHA safety inspector from Avon, OH) and Christian Newman (a mechanical engineer from Buffalo, NY) were named the three finalists. All three builds were unveiled on August 5 at the legendary Buffalo Chip during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

“Since the beginning of this program, our goal was to highlight the passion and the craftsmanship of garage builders from around the country,” said Reid Wilson, Senior Director for Indian Motorcycle. “Needless to say, our expectations were vastly exceeded. Fred, Christian and PJ exemplify what this program is all about. And in turn, we hope it motivates and encourages others from around the country.”

Juarez’s grand prize-winning custom Indian Scout Bobber can be found on IndianMotorcycle.com and on future pages of Hot Bike magazine. All three bikes will tour a variety of motorcycle shows and events with Indian Motorcycle for the remainder of the year and into 2019. At the conclusion of the tour, each bike will be returned to the builder.

The AMA Recognizes Members Who Love to Ride

The AMA LongRider program is your chance to show others that you're serious about riding your motorcycle. AMA members are invited to earn patches for various mileage milestones.

Mileage awards are available at 10,000, 25,000 and 50,000 annual miles. In addition to the awards, AMA LongRiders will be recognized on the AMA website.

If you don't get a chance to ride that often, let your miles accumulate for a Lifetime Mileage award at 25,000, 50,000, 100,000, 250,000, 500,000, 750,000 and 1 million miles. Riders who achieve 1 million miles will earn a special AMA LongRider plaque.

Long Rider Rules:

Must be current AMA member
Must agree to abide by AMA verification rules and procedures
Must register for program (miles begin to accumulate once registered)
May use multiple motorcycles

How it works:

Riders register using the AMA LongRider Application.
Mileage counts from this day forward, unless you can provide verification of previous mileage with documentation from an AMA-chartered club. The AMA will consider verified mileage awards from non-AMA groups/clubs/dealers on a case-by-case basis. Mileage will not be credited for years that you were not an AMA member.
If you were enrolled in the AMA LongRider program in 2008 or prior, previous verified AMA LongRider Emeritus mileage counts.
Send a current odometer photo with your AMA card in the photo or other verification as listed on the mileage award form. Odometer pics and other verification will be kept on record with the AMA.
If multiple motorcycles are used, mileage will count from time each motorcycle is registered with the LongRider Program.

American Dresser - A Passion for two wheels is turned into a feature film.

Carmine Cangialosi writes, directs, & co-stars in modern western - American Dresser

Carmine Cangialosi didn't set out to make a motorcycle film when he began writing the script for American Dresser. The actor-turned-screenwriter/director and lifelong motorcyclist said he set out to make a, "modern western," and chose to incorporate his familiarity with the motorcycling lifestyle into the project.

"You can't write a western movie about the horses," he said.

The film's story line focuses on lead actor Tom Berenger's character, John Moore, as he embarks on a cross-country motorcycle trip to cope with the recent death of his wife, as well as confront a decades-old family secret.

Cangialosi hopes his first film project featuring motorcycles will resonate with riders and non-riders, alike. His father is a veteran and a motorcycle rider, much like the main character in the film. While he rode dirt bikes in his youth, the younger Cangialosi's acting schedule did not allow him to have much time to ride.

He chose to diversify his film career by branching into writing and directing. After his first film project was released in 2002, Cangialosi began writing the script for American Dresser. It was his first time featuring motorcycles in a film.

He used motorcycles to attract motorcycling's "built-in audience." He said motorcycles spearhead a multi-billion dollar industry, and he hopes using them in the film will help make it more attractive to audiences.

"Motorcycles are very iconic," Cangialosi said. "People either ride or want to ride."

While he has a lot of respect for other motorcycle-themed moviesAmerican Dresser, Cangialosi said he drew more influence from western films like Dances with Wolves, The Unforgiven and There Will Be Blood. He was also grateful for the major contributions that actors Berenger and Keith David made to the film.

"I was beyond fortunate to get them onboard this project." Cangialosi said.

One of the challenges he faced was teaching the film's two main stars how to ride.

"Tom [Berenger]'s wife rides, and Tom rode dirt bikes as a kid," Cangialosi said.

He said David did not have previous riding experience. David's busy schedule forced Cangialosi to give David a crash course on how to ride a motorcycle shortly before filming began.

The Harley-Davidson motorcycle ridden in the film by Berenger's character is owned by Cangialosi's father. Cangialosi also wanted to get an Indian motorcycle into the film, so that is what David's character, Charlie Wylde, rides.

"I did not want to make a brand movie," he said. "I wanted to make the film as timeless as possible."

Cangialosi said he doesn't have plans to make another film featuring motorcycles, but would not rule out using them again.

"Making this film was the hardest thing I have ever done," he said. "Whatever I do next, I will let [the project] come together organically …. Like a comedian, I don't want to become too topical."

American Dresser was released on video on demand Sept. 21 and received a limited theatrical release Sept. 23.

Harley-Davidson #RideForStrength Campaign for Muscular Dystrophy Launches on Labor Day

Harley-Davidson riders represent Muscular Dystrophy Association at Harley-Davidson's 115th Anniversary Celebration

The Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) is kicking off its #RideforStrength campaign to celebrate Harley-Davidson's 38 years of support. A select group of Harley-Davidson riders from across the country are traveling to Milwaukee to participate in Harley-Davidson's 115th Anniversary Parade and are capturing the experience on MDA's social channels and raising money for the organization.

During the Labor Day weekend's festivities, 115 MDA advocates, including MDA Harley-Davidson riders, members of the International Association of Fire Firefighters (IAFF) and more, will participate in the Parade of Heroes, the signature event at every Harley-Davidson anniversary celebration.

"Harley-Davidson is one of America's most generous and iconic companies and we've been honored to call them a partner for the past 38 years. They have helped us to accelerate the delivery of treatments and cures to transform the lives of people affected by neuromuscular disease and ALS," said Lynn O'Connor Vos, president and CEO of the Muscular Dystrophy Association. 'Ride for Strength' is a celebration of that commitment."

Harley-Davidson's fundraising efforts go toward advancements in research, care and treatments with the goal to ultimately provide cures for individuals affected by neuromuscular disease and ALS.

Since 1980, the Harley-Davidson family of dealers, riders, customers and suppliers have raised more than $103 million to support the families served by MDA. In 2017, the Harley-Davidson family raised $3.1 million alone.

"For 38 years, it's been an honor to support the Muscular Dystrophy Association and this year, we're proud to have MDA families and children ride alongside our Harley-Davidson enthusiasts in honor of our 115th anniversary," said Claudia Garber, manager of the Harley-Davidson Riding Academy and MDA liaison. Look for Local Grassroots Events Like - The Marinara Mountain Run

Most of us have our own ideas about what it is to be a so called "Biker".
If yours involves new and old friends riding motorcycles in from out of town, converging on a small campground in the mountains, and having a free spaghetti dinner, then Marinara Mountain Run is as great as it gets!!

The hosts of Marinara Mountain Run, @KaylaInfernoArt & @CharlieTravelingChopper, are one of the most adventuresome couples that I know. They've traveled the world on their motorcycles, and can tell some of the best stories. #RockingChairStories as they call it. One time on a trip through Italy, they experienced an event where this all started. A group of chopper riding bikers, converging, camping, live music, vintage American Choppers surrounding them, and everyone was having a great time.

"The whole chopper show sat down and had a large pasta family dinner together. Drank wine and espresso (in the middle of nowhere in the woods with a generator). It moved us so much, the sense of community, that we wanted to recreate the experience here." -Kayla Koeune *

We are now lucky enough that Kayla & Charlie have brought this back to the States for us to experience.

This year was the third "annual" running, after the two took last summer off to get married & travel the world together! I can't think of a better way to help celebrate their anniversary every summer than to continue attending this event.

This year, their surprise for us attendee's was motorcycle games. Slow Races, Ride the Plank, & Ring Toss. We were lucky enough to have the games run by none other than Chris Cullen of @CycleSourceMagazine.

The Slow Race is fairly self explanatory, but always a fun event. Two opponents face off to ride the slowest they can while staying upright, not killing the bike, keeping their feet up, and staying between two lines. Psyching out your opponent is not against the rules, so do as you may!

Ride the Plank, got it's start with boards being lined up end to end and each participant had to ride down the boards keeping both tires on the boards at all times. The boards often got narrower in width the farther down the course you went.

This idea has evolved over the years, at the Marinara games you got one round of riding a not so flat 2x4. If you made it across that round, then moving onto round two got more difficult, as Chris poured on 20/40 motor oil to the board. Now things got exciting! The first bike wound up in the crowd! Keeping your bike straight on a slick ass board is NO easy feat!

Then we moved on to the Ring Toss. Balance, hand eye coordination, throttle control, and where do you keep three rings for easy accessibility?! Basically you get three metal rings, and you have to get one ring over the top of three traffic cones, each set a little farther away from your lane than the last. Each rider devised their own plans in our practice run. Then onto the real deal. I had no chance on this game, but some of the entrants were in it for a few rounds! Chris stepped up the intensity by adding cones on each side of the riders lanes, and different height cones. Truly entertaining to watch, these guys had some serious skills! All of those video games growing up were finally paying off. Take that 'Ma!

Later that evening the Garlic Bread was thrown over the fire to warm, and the pasta was ready to eat! Kayla busted her buns cooking huge quantities of pasta, marinara, & meatBALLS for all of us! Her hard work did NOT go unrecognized by all who attended. We all sat around the fire stuffing our faces! Enjoying each-others company, catching up with folks we hadn't seen since the previous Marinara Run, or other events around the country. Cards were brought out, beer & whiskey made an appearance, stories were told, friendships were made. An all around great time was had by all.

There are a lot of similar ideas like this one popping up all around the United States, though maybe not as cool as this one in my opinion. Keep your eyes & ears open for your local groups to spill the secrets on how to find them! Better yet, put one together yourself! That's what it's all about, invite your friends, and their friends and make it a great time. I'll see you out at the next local, or not so local, grassroots chopper/motorcycle/bike run! Much fun will be had.

Road to The Congregation Show 2018

The Congregation Vintage Motorcycle Show in Charlotte, NC, presented by Prism Supply & DicE Magazine is growing in popularity. This year we asked Danger Dan (Dan Hardick from Tin Top, TX) to tell us all about his trip to the show! Take a Gander!

Danger Dan has a weekly podcast called "Danger Dan's Talk Shop" where he brings the age old concept of "talking shop" to your computer, phone or tablet. Listeners feel right at home - or in their shop - with Dan and his guests. On his shows he shares the real grit to riding a Pan Head. He also has a fun time interviewing some down to earth folks in today's industry, & shares good times at the shows going on this season.

So generally I ride my Pan Head chopper to all the events I attend but on the way back from Daytona, a few weeks ago, I lost a wrist pin clip on my front cylinder and shredded metal throughout the whole motor. Now, needing a full rebuild, I threw in a nosecone shovel motor and transmission to make it to Giddy Up. Which I didn’t, ended up having some charging system and battery issues. I thought I had it all fixed and was gearing up to leave Wednesday to go to The Congregation in Charlotte, North Carolina this past weekend. Was gonna take my time and see some sites and friends on the way there.
Tuesday night I got a text asking me to be a part of the filming for a TV show called RIDE with Norman Reidus. Of course I said yes and rescheduled my trip. So I planned on leaving the shoot in Dallas Thursday night with hopes of making it to Charlotte Friday night for the pre-party. 1,060 miles to my destination on a bike that has left me stranded on every trip I have taken it on this year. Sounds like a good idea, right?!?! It did… So I packed my gear, a tent, bed roll, socks, always bring sockssss, warm over layers and all my podcast equipment in a Sweatshop Ind. sissy bar bag located, you guessed it, on my sissy bar. Then I took off headed for my first TV experience on my barn built chopper. I got no further than turning off the road I live on before my chopper just quit. So I kicked it again and it started right back up. Until I gave it some throttle and it spit and sputtered then died again.

Sounded electrical, so I changed the condenser and points while I was at it. Same result. I had my friend, the Wizard, come down and look at it and made a phone call to another grey beard we call Redeye. Redeye said try a coil, the Wizard said try a Twin Cam like mine. So with time running out on making the TV shoot I limped it to the Wizards house around the corner we changed out all electrical devices we could get to without pulling the stator. No good results. The TV show, was not happening, but I wasn’t giving up on the Congregation.
A day before this my good friend Mike had made a joke about me borrowing his FXRT side-Hack to take to Charlotte cause he didn’t have faith my Shovelhead would make it. So I decided to call and find out if he was joking or serious. Turns out he was more than happy to help and asked when I would be coming to get it? I said right now so he called his wife and told her to turn over the keys. He gave me a quick run down and told me to enjoy it.

“If anything happens don’t worry about it we will fix it when you get back”, Mike said. So I unloaded my chopper, jumped in the truck, and hauled ass over there. It took a little getting used to the feeling of a third wheel hanging off the right side but in no time I was rolling down the highway as comfortable as could be.
I did 1,060 straight to the pre-party with a short nap and a couple gas stops and not one worry the whole way there. I document my travels with a recorder for my podcast called Danger Dans Talk Shop available on iTunes, Stitcher, and Google Play. You can get a more accurate account of how this trip went there so lets move on to the party.

When I pulled into Charlotte it was Friday night, 11 0’clock, and the weather was perfect for two wheel riding. Even 3 wheel riding! I took the scenic route through downtown Charlotte to the MidWood Country Club where the pre-party was spilling out into the parking lot. Everybody was gathered around bikes they rode in on and some that would be displayed at the show the next day. As I un-boarded my vehicle I heard a familiar voice say “is that Danger Dan?” Then saw a little silhouette bend over to read my plate. It was a face I hadn’t seen in over a year, Mr. Potter! Immediately he asked what my plans were and if I had a place to stay and offered up the house he was staying at and told me about how my friends here in Texas had treated him the same way. I seem to run into good, honest, friendly people wherever I go. So I told a handful of people about the journey and heard about theirs.
This is always my favorite part of any rally, show, or meet-up. The first night when everyone arrives and we get to exchange our stories from the road with the comfort of being at the final destination amongst friends, new and old. We then mass exodus to the Air BnB. Only one bike was dropped in the getaway and one stalled on the way there. After riding all day and one small breath of the devil’s finest, I opted to sleep right next to my bike in a gravel parking lot and you wouldn’t believe how fulfilling it was.
The next morning was the day of the show and I was the first one to roll my gear up and leave. I wanted to see the city during the day so I took off about 8am and rode around till I found a nice coffee shop downtown where I ordered a red eye, a cup of juice, and a cronut. Now this was my first cronut and it was amazing! A cronut is a doughnut made of a crescent dough and this particular one was stuffed with cayenne peppered chocolate and covered with raspberry sugar. You must try one for yourself. This coffee joint was located at the bottom of a Marriott hotel so I was able to take advantage of the bathroom, relieve myself and take a quick whore bath before the show.
I got to the venue early and was blown away at the size and the atmosphere produced by this old building that once built cars and bombs. The vendors were loading in and the builders were pushing bikes. There was a photographer in the corner taking portraits of the bikes and the owners as they loaded into the show. The floor plan was open, and I mean OPEN. I believe this building was in the range 200k square feet. I located the food, cold drinks, and started running into more friends and making new ones as all the pieces fell into place.
Before the show opened they ran all the participants out so the “press” could get their photos and the fire Marshall could do one last inspection. I took this time to grab some tacos and catch up with my good friend Bill Dodge. His pitbull puppy got about as much attention standing idle waiting on me to drop a taco as any bike in the show. Doors are open and the weather is beautiful inside and out.
As you walk in the entry way there was a “hallway’ of vendors to the left and right. I was set-up with the RT-Hack as my merch booth. Selling Danger Dan T’s for gas money and giving away the last few Prism Supply shirts I had to anybody that signed up for my T-shirt subscription plan MCshopTs.com on the spot. The crowd ranged from strollers to walkers and everything in between.

Once you got past vendor row you approached the Prism display where they were showing off their past two Born Free builds and the current one that will be given away at Born Free 10. Hang a right from there and it was a almost chaotic array of choppers and custom motorcycles lit up by the few rays of sun that made it in through the 100 year old windows that looked out onto the swap meet grounds where you could find live music, cold drinks and fill your belly at the food trucks located around the corner.
Roughly 5000 attendees walked through the doors that beautiful Saturday between 2-8pm. Once you got past the choppers you’d find an assortment of vintage dirt bikes. Some beautifully restored classics and other modified for specifics landscapes. All beautiful. Although the weather was somehow a factor in the participation of some of the hots rods, there were some cages that made the journey. You’ll have to pay attention to Rodders Journal for more coverage on them.

Now the choppers were all vintage and that means I don’t believe I saw even one evolution motor in the group. Now my personal favorite was a Panhead brought by a cat named Stephen Webb.

It was a matte finished olive green color with some classic dull yellow stripes on the frame which turned into flames on the tank. Looked as though it was built to have that recreated “patina” look. Little did I know until we spoke. He told me he found that frame in an old grey beards barn up in the rafters with that exact paint on it. He spent many years trying to get the old man to come off the project. But got the all too familiar “I’m gonna rebuild that some day” until last year he finally decided to let it and some other parts go. Stephen made one helluva a haul that day which he was able to use to add his own personal touches to this timeless chopper.
As the day went on I ran into one of the hardest working guys in the industry and I finally got some one on one time with Micheal Lichter. Super nice and a pro at what he does. We talked about the good, the bad, and the ugly ways of the world as he positioned me and my friend Mike’s RT-Hack so he could get just the right shot. By the time we wrapped up Jake and the last few of the crew ran us outside at which time I realized everybody else had already vacated the premises to enjoy the after party.
So I jumped on my ride and cruised through what ended up being the prettiest night of my trip on the way to Tipsy Burros, an old late night Mexican food joint where the food seems to come second to the booze sliding across the bar. Once again the party had spilled out into the parking lot where people were still checking out bikes and planning their journey's home. After meeting some more good folks and slinging some more t-shirts in the parking lot I took off to finally get some sleep under an actual roof.
Talk was, storms were a brew’n. Turns out they were right which made for a very interesting beginning for my journey home. I wasn’t planning on taking the straight shot home like I had followed on the way there. I was gonna take the “scenic route” First stop, Wheels through Time in Maggie Valley.

Giddy Up Vintage Chopper Show 2018

For the past five years now, the weekend surrounding the last Saturday of March gets marked off on the calendars by myself and hundreds of other chopper and motorcycle lovers across the country. The central Texas city of New Braunfels is normally a spring and summer destination for thousands looking to beat the Texas heat by tubing in the Guadalupe and Comal rivers, or at the fantastic water park, Schlitterbahn. But for this weekend, a different crowd swarms this cozy, little tourist city, for a completely different reason. The Giddy Up Vintage Chopper Show was born out of Matt Jackson, Joey Cano, John Collins, and Marcos Flores. The growing chopper scene in Texas deserved some love, and these guys gave it to us. While Giddy Up has not reached the size of The Born Free Show in Southern California, I believe it could easily in the next couple of years. It draws constant comparisons by attendees & social media. Some are even saying that they now prefer Giddy Up over its bigger, Californian brother.

If you like to hang out and have a good time with all your biker friends, Giddy Up gave you plenty of opportunities this year. When you hear that everything is bigger in Texas, that obviously includes the number of parties we like to throw...as there was no shortage for 2018.

The festivities kicked off Thursday night with the pre-pre-party at The Little Darlin in Austin, TX, an hour ride up I-35 from New Braunfels. After eventually making it back to camp, and a few hours of rest, Saturday morning finds us ready for a day filled with drooling over amazing choppers brought from all over the country, great live music, vendors from far and wide slinging their wares, and more Lone Star Beer flowing for the masses (just not free today!). River Road Ice House has hosted Giddy Up for all of its five years, and they do an amazing job of accommodating the hundreds of folks pouring in for the best little chopper show in Texas, as it grows more and more every year.

Giddy Up is unlike pretty much all other bike shows. There are no prizes, awards, or trophies handed out. No one is trying to better anyone else to win a plaque or some cash. Builders simply haul their bikes here to put on display, and show like minded folks what they’ve busted their tails building, because they love it and it’s their passion. Personally, I love this about Giddy Up. This lifestyle isn’t a contest. It’s not about doing something better than someone else. It’s about the love of motorcycles, and seeing what crazy ideas so-and-so had and threw together on their chopper. Pure and simple. Even my little ol’ Evo Sportster chopper received plenty of oooo’s and ahhh’s (Thank you...oh...thank you).

Every single bike in the invited show area was worth talking about and giving mention to...but that would just be impossible here. So, I’ll just note some of my personal favorites...

For the first time in Giddy Up history, a lady won! This year’s Giddy Up bike found a new home with a young lady somewhere up in the Texas panhandle outside of Amarillo. Celebrations were aplenty! Oh, and remember how we like to throw as many parties as possible in a weekend? If you still wanted more after the pre-pre-party, the pre-party, the pre-party after party, and the show itself...we’ve got the show after party back at the campground Saturday night! Wrapping up a long weekend of camping on the Guadalupe River (muchas gracias to Camp Huaco Springs for being the official Giddy Up campground every year!), riding through the Texas hill country, consuming plenty of amazing Texas BBQ, tacos, and Lone Star Beer, and admiring tons of great bikes is always bittersweet. This is a must-do event for me, personally, every year. Giddy Up Cinco was incredible, but I expected nothing less. Here’s to looking forward to March 2019, when we’ll make the trek back to New Braunfels, Texas, and do it all over again!

Global Moto Adventures Announces dates for the Second Annual Flock to the Rock with Elspeth Beard as Featured Speaker

Dates for this year’s Flock to the Rock (FTTR) female-focused motorcycle event are set for May 3-5, 2018, in Seaside, Oregon. This year’s featured speaker is Elspeth Beard, the first British woman to ride around the world on a solo motorcycle trip.

“This is Elspeth’s first time speaking in the USA where she started her trip thirty-six years ago,” said event founder Ruth Belcher. “Elspeth’s memoir detailing her motorcycle adventure, The Lone Rider, has recently been published and she’ll be signing books at the event. Elspeth will also be joining us on our International Female Ride Day ride on Saturday, May 5th, 2018.”

Not just a rally, this event brings women together for riding inspiration and the sharing of communal experience. Packed with seminars, inspiring speakers, and networking opportunities, the annual event expects more than two hundred women in attendance this year. “Flock to the Rock is a completely different experience and last year everyone rode away glowing,” said Belcher. “The feedback from last year encouraged us to add another day and more workshops to the event as well as bring in legendary Elspeth Beard. We are so fortunate she will be joining us,” said Belcher.

Opening speaker this year is Pat Jacques, a pioneering motorcycle rider who raced men’s motocross, is a successful entrepreneur, and is also founder of ADVWoman. During the event there will also be a speaker panel consisting of the “Ladies of Chickistan” who traversed the mountains and valleys of Northern Pakistan together in 2016, helping to change the perception of Pakistan and its people. They’ll be sharing their personal experiences and life changing moments in order to inspire other women at FTTR.

Mama Tried Motorcycle Show 2018

Some folks prefer expensive cruises and others prefer Walt Disney World. Then there are those who
head to America’s Dairy-land in the middle of February (where temps average between 19-25 degrees), for a motorcycle show. Mama Tried, now in its 5th year, has turned out to be one of the premier invited builder’s shows, & it isn’t letting up on the throttle any time soon. The show has refined itself more every year with impressive talent and aesthetically satisfying venues. Though the pre-parties in town begin on Thursday, the real show starts on Friday night at Flat Out Friday- the indoor, Flat Track Race on a Dr. Pepper syrup-covered track. 11 classes competed this year, including an epic hooligan showdown between the mighty mulleted Larry Enticer on his Yamaha snowmobile and, well, everyone else.

We also witnessed a tribute to Evel Knievel go south real quick, ending in a righteous battle of clubs, axes, bloodletting and burnouts between a dozen Evel Knievel jumpsuit-clad racers and some wasteland Vikings.

Over 100 bikes were staged in the 25k sq ft ballroom of The Rave / Eagles Club. The balcony above the ballroom hosted a number of vendors, as well as allowed for a bird’s eye view of the event.
Two more floors of vendors, as well as a few cash bars were below the show floor, allowing guests to
meander between multiple spaces and floors within the venue. The facility, which can hold up to 6,000 people, was at capacity within an hour or two of opening; however, security was organized in getting folks in as quickly as possible.

The basement level of the complex housed the MTMS Motorcycle Film Fest, new this year, and an impressive addition to the Mama Tried experience. The highlight of the film fest was the screening of “Sugar & Spade” with live, raw and gritty blues guitar accompaniment by Rocco DeLuca. Entertaining story-telling of chopper life in 1960’s NYC. Following the screening, we had a lighthearted Q&A with the production staff, Spade George, and Austin “Brown Sugar”.

The invited builders this year presented not only some functional and well-ridden machines, but showcased their raw talent for the art of metal fabrication, paint, and innovative motorcycle design. There was an interesting mix of classic, street, and unusual designs this year presented by both amateur builders, and the industry’s best craftsmen.

One of my favorites, Chris Tope’s “Navajo’Daka”, is a little ripper Hodaka, built in a toy-hauler trailer, featuring a gorgeous set of grips made of turquoise and cholla cactus.

Denver’s Mike Neilsen brought two showstoppers to Milwaukee, exhibiting his meticulous craftsmanship and clean lines.

Another favorite was Wannabe Choppers’ Ricky de Haas’ 2017 “manufactured from scratch” bike. This stunner had us all circling around it in awe of the talent that went into this fabrication.

Mama Tried is an anticipated diversion from the monotony of winter, featuring a long weekend of parties, flat-track and ice racing, and innovative bike builders that continue to impress us with their honesty and ingenuity. After Sturgis, Lessons Learned and Reflecting on the Fun with Chris Ward!

Our Guest Writer this month is Chris Ward. Chris loves the open road on his Harley. He started racing dirt bikes when he was younger and injuries led him to the love of paved roads. He works a lot of the time for A-1 Auto Transport but on his free time, he enjoys riding with his wife and friends.
Without further ado, here's Chris's account of Sturgis 2017!

The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, the biggest biker rally held in the northern hemisphere every summer, is one that every motorcycle lover should attend at least once in their lifetime. Whether you go to see the cool custom-built motorcycles, the new Harley-Davidsons on display or even to just hang out with some really great folks and catch a few outstanding rock n’ roll shows along the way, this is the rally to check out for yourself to see what fun is really about.

After leaving Sturgis this year and already planning to attend next year, I decided to share some insight into how the rally went for me.

Getting to Sturgis

One of the most exciting things about Sturgis can be the ride to South Dakota itself. This is especially true if you live a great distance from the state and plan to ride the whole way in. Be aware that while the ride can be intriguing, it may be best for experienced riders who have taken long rides previously and know what to expect when planning. Something you need to do if the ride will be long is plan for the ride by booking a hotel or two to along the route to have time for rest. For a motorcyclist, besides the dangers of car drivers, fatigued driving is one of the biggest dangers on the highway. If you want to have your motorcycle at Sturgis but don’t have time to ride long distance or prefer to just ride a little at the rally, hiring a professional motorcycle shipper is a great option to have the bike delivered safely and still be able to get in plenty of ride time when you get to Sturgis. If you don’t own a motorcycle but enjoy riding, you may want to check into renting one for the rally. Many people who come to Sturgis don’t have a motorcycle at all, but the thrill of the event keeps everyone well-entertained the entire time they are inside the gates.

Entering Sturgis

The small town of Sturgis, South Dakota with a population of fewer than 7000 full-time residents, works extremely hard to ensure that the rally is successful year after year. For a town so small, it’s difficult to believe they can accomplish accommodating more than 700,000 people annually, providing enough hotel, campground and other space for lodging and maintain an environment where people not only have fun, but where people from around the nation can spend time bonding together with others who have the same love and admiration for America’s favorite vehicle, the motorcycle. With major event sponsors like Harley-Davidson Motorcycles, you see the most beautiful motorcycles ever crafted before you even enter Sturgis. Whether cruising down the highway or parked along the roadside where bikers frequently stop for photo ops to post to social media or send back home to family and friends who couldn’t make the trip, the custom-built bikes you will see are some of the best in the world.

Things to Do

It isn’t difficult to find a fun motorcycle or music festival in the U.S., but to have one that includes the best in both is not always easy to find. You already know you’re going to see the world’s coolest motorcycles, but you’re also going to be able to sit down and listen to headlining bands and talented musicians from every genre of rock n’ roll, heavy metal, death metal, alternative rock, blues and bluegrass, country and many other styles of music in bars, lounges and the great outdoors all throughout Sturgis. There are also plenty of souvenir shacks, places to find locally prepared food and a downtown area where shopping is plentiful and you will find a variety of shopping venues open day and night.

Lessons Learned

The ride to Sturgis from Santa Cruz, California was long (well over a full day of ride time) and when I return in 2018, I now know to book a hotel for two nights rather than just one. There are so many interesting things to see along the way that take time, and rest is important. Also, be sure to pack light if you ride. There are places to do laundry as well as purchase toiletries when you arrive. It makes sense to pack enough clothing for a few days and skip packing the toothbrush and other shower items. Take an emergency roadside tool kit. It’s not good when you need a flat repaired and need a can of fix-a-flat to get you to the nearest tire shop and you don’t have a can. Pack a flashlight, an emergency phone and even a spare battery for your cell phone in case you need more talk time during the ride. Most of all, leave your worries at home. After meeting a wide array of people from all walks of life, you will quickly see that no matter who you are and what you do outside of Sturgis, once you enter, everyone becomes your family and you’re going to have the time of your life.

TUCSON -
A Tucson woman is recovering in the ICU after a gruesome motorcycle accident.

Authorities say Ron Bondy and his fiancee, Linda Gonzalez, were riding together on a motorcycle in their Southeast side neighborhood Wednesday when the couple ran into a ratchet strap.

The strap was intentionally placed across the street near East Silver Beech Drive and South Evergreen Avenue, tied from a mailbox to a tree in the median.

Ron was in the front seat of the motorcycle and missed the strap. But Linda was in the back seat, which sits a bit higher than the front seat.

"It hit her in the mouth," he said. "It almost took her off the bike and just ripped her apart."

A report has been filed with the Tucson Police Department. The family believes the strap was placed in the street as part of a prank. Anyone with information is urged to call 8-8-CRIME. All tips can remain anonymous.

Ron's daughter, Marie Bondy, said she is hopeful someone will come forward with information.

“Whoever they are, they're inhumane, absolute monsters,” she said. “I can't imagine who would do something like that. I really hope that whoever is responsible is brought to very swift and strict justice because we are very, very distraught.”

Linda is suffering from multiple facial injuries, and has been placed in a medically induced coma at Banner UMC. Ron said her road to recovery will be long, but he will be there every step of the way.

"She's funny and she's loving. Her heart is as big as this hospital," he said. "Pray for her. She's a beautiful woman and she's going to be beautiful again."

Advanced Rider Scholarship!! From The Women's Coalition of Motorcyclists (WCM), SeCCRet & Reg Pridmore's CLASS Motorcycle School!

The Women’s Coalition of Motorcyclists (WCM) is dedicated to doubling the number of female riders by 2020. In pursuit of this goal, they have partnered with Sarah “SeCCRet” Moreau "the Cross Country Rider," and Reg Pridmore's CLASS Motorcycle School to establish a scholarship program for two promising females to attend either the All Women’s Day Training event on Wednesday, April 11, 2018 (7:30 am - 4:30 pm PST), or, the 1-day co-ed school on Labor Day, Monday, September 3, 2018.
Sarah “SeCCRet” Moreau, the Cross Country Rider, is paying it forward by donating $275 toward these scholarships. Amazingly, the Pridmore's have matched SeCCRet donation affording WCM with the opportunity to offer 2 scholarships to their members in California and the surrounding area. This is dedication to the field and the growth of our beloved industry!

Reg Pridmore’s CLASS Motorcycle School, at Streets of Willow in Willow Springs, CA. is located in Southern California’s Antelope Valley, 1.5 hours north of Los Angeles. Each scholarship will cover the $275 fee for the school, but not personal travel expenses. You ride your own bike and wear your own gear. This Motorcycle school is only for those who are comfortable with riding at freeway speeds or higher and who want to learn track riding and/or become safer riders on the street. Applicants must have a minimum of 2,000 street miles of experience and feel comfortable at freeway speeds (60+MPH). A wide variety of bikes are acceptable, including many cruisers. Please check with Gigi at CLASS at (805) 933-9936 to make sure your bike is acceptable for the course.

CLASS has been teaching both men and women of all abilities and ages how to ride smoother, safer, and with more confidence for decades. The classes take place on Streets racetrack as the closed course environment removes distractions and allows the rider to safety concentrate only on their riding technique. Lap times are not recorded. The Pridmore's and their professional team of instructors are there to ensure riders have a great time! On track sessions alternate with effective and entertaining classroom instruction throughout the day. A portion of the day is also set aside for riding drills to help improve rider performance braking to a safe stop.

Six California Motorcycle Laws You Need to Know!

Though the sense of freedom on the open road is what draws so many of us to motorcycles, it is important to understand and follow California motorcycle laws. Responsible riding can help you avoid traffic citations and fines, but more importantly, seriously reduce your risk of getting into a motorcycle accident. Here are six California motorcycle laws you need to know, from the Los Angeles motorcycle accident lawyers at Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys.

Are there any restrictions on handlebar height? According to California law, a person “shall not drive a two-wheel motorcycle that is equipped with handlebars so positioned that the hands of the driver, when upon the grips, are more than six inches above his or her shoulder height when sitting astride the seat.”
Are turn signals required on motorcycles in California? According to California state law, Motorcycles are required to have proper working turn signals, front and rear. Turn signals are not required on a motorcycle built and first registered prior to Jan. 1, 1973.
Are there regulations on motorcycle exhaust systems? California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger enacted the Motorcycle Anti-Tampering Act in 2010. The law took effect on Jan. 1, 2013 and gives police the authority to ticket motorcycles with non-compliant exhaust systems. However, the law applies only to 2013 and newer motorcycle models and exhaust systems. Older bikes equipped with aftermarket systems purchased before Jan. 1, 2013, are not affected.
Is it legal to lane split on a motorcycle? Lane splitting by motorcycles is not illegal in California when “done in a safe and prudent manner”. The California Highway Patrol and other statewide traffic safety groups have long endorsed a basic guideline for motorcycle “lane-splitting.” Recently introduced legislation may place limitations on the practice. In addition, it is illegal for motorists to intentionally block or impede a motorcyclist in a way that could cause harm to the rider.
What age can minors ride as motorcycle passengers? There is no specific age specified in the California Vehicle Code regarding when a minor can begin riding as a motorcycle passenger. However, the California laws require that all passengers must have a “seat securely fastened to the machine at the rear of the driver and (be) provided with footrests.” The law continues to state that “every passenger…shall keep his feet on the footrests while such vehicle is in motion.” To ensure safety and compliance with the law, some motorcyclists have had footrests moved to fit the height of their child or have purchased a special seat for children with built-in footrests. Beyond the law, it is important to educate your passengers on the fundamentals of leaning and riding as a team.
How old do you have to be to drive a motorcycle in California? In order to obtain a motorcycle license in the state of California, you must be 16 years of age and have not only completed a driver’s education and training course, but also have completed a motorcycle rider training course.

Harley-Davidson closing Kansas City plant as motorcycle sales fall.

MILWAUKEE — Harley-Davidson's sales fell sharply in 2017 and the company will move ahead with a plan to consolidate manufacturing operations, including the closure of its Kansas City, Mo. plant.

The world's largest maker of heavyweight motorcycles has struggled to reverse a four-year sales slide, with growth overseas somewhat helping offset a decline in the U.S. bike market.

The Milwaukee-based company said its net income fell 82% in its fiscal fourth quarter to $8.3 million, compared with a year earlier. Earnings per share were 5 cents, down from 27 cents a year earlier. Revenue was $1.23 billion, up from $1.11 billion.

The earnings drop came in part because of a charge associated with President Trump's tax cut and a $29.4 million charge for a voluntary product recall.

Harley-Davidson worldwide retail motorcycle sales fell 6.7% in 2017 compared to 2016. The company's U.S. sales fell 8.5% and international sales were down 3.9%.

Harley has taken steps to counter what's been a prolonged downturn, including tightening motorcycle inventories.

"Our actions to address the current environment, through disciplined supply and cost management, position us well as we drive to achieve our long-term objectives to build the next generation of Harley-Davidson riders globally," Matt Levatich, president and CEO, said in a statement.

The company's manufacturing consolidation includes plans to shift production from Kansas City, Mo. into its plant in York, Pa. About 800 jobs in Kansas City will be cut.

Harley expects restructuring and other consolidation costs of $170 million to $200 million over the next two years.

It expects ongoing annual cash savings of $65 million to $75 million after 2020.

"The decision to consolidate our final assembly plants was made after very careful consideration of our manufacturing footprint and the appropriate capacity given the current business environment. Our Kansas City assembly operations will leave a legacy of safety, quality, collaboration and manufacturing leadership," Levatich said.

Levatich did not make any mention of the company's Wisconsin operations, including its large manufacturing plant in Menomonee Falls and a smaller plant in Tomahawk.

Harley and other makers of cruiser and touring motorcycles have seen their sales tumble as the economy has weakened in some areas and interest in motorcycling, overall, hasn't been as strong.

"For years, the North American heavyweight motorcycle industry grew at double-digit rates due to low interest rates, a strong economy, a rising stock market and ... the baby boomers. However in recent years, and going forward, we expect a much slower growth pattern for the U.S. motorcycle industry," said analyst Robin Diedrich with Edward Jones Co.

"As safety becomes a concern for aging baby boomers, domestic sales for the heavyweight motorcycle industry should slow. We expect certain international markets, particularly in Asia and South America, to have higher growth rates in heavyweight motorcycles than the U.S.," Diedrich said.

Harley's foreign competitors have benefited from a strong U.S. dollar, as their overseas operations have made it more profitable to sell bikes in the U.S. at lower prices.

In some cases, Diedrich said, prices of Japanese motorcycles have come down 25% and discounts ranged up to $3,000 per bike.

"Harley is seeing significant pricing pressure, hurting profitability and sales," she said.

Harley recalls nearly 175K bikes, because brakes can fail.

Detroit (AP) - Under pressure from U.S. safety regulators, Harley-Davidson is recalling nearly 175,000 motorcycles because the brakes might fail.

The U.S. recall covers more than 30 models from the 2008 through 2011 model years. Harley says deposits can form on brake parts if the fluid isn't changed every two years as specified in the owner's manual. That can cause a valve in the antilock brake control unit to stick.

The U.S. government's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began investigating problems in July of 2016 after getting 43 complaints including three reports of crashes and two injuries.

Documents show Harley wanted to do a field service campaign instead of a recall, but the government refused.

The company says it cooperated with NHTSA and began a thorough evaluation of the issue. "Complex, ongoing discussions regarding what was ultimately identified as a maintenance issue continued with the agency through January 2018," Harley-Davidson said in a printed statement.

Dealers will flush and replace brake fluid starting on Feb. 12.

Once you’ve arrived in Zell am See, it’s not far to the infamous Eagle’s Nest, which was presented to Adolf Hitler on his 50th birthday; the restaurant offers up some of the most celebrated food and views in Austria.

Then, it’s onto the Dolomites, where you can view the shared geographical heritage of Italy and Austria.

Patches, Yoska, & Esmeralda

Last spring before the bustle of Labor Day and summer vacations I rode north on highway 395 through the Eastern Sierras. It was a wet winter with rain that made the desert bloom, the mountain peaks white with snow, and the rivers raging. I had many friends suggest I ride highway 395 and told me of all there was to see. One of the places on my list was to stay a few days at Alabama Hills.

Just outside Lone Pine, California is BLM land that has a fantastic view of Mt. Whitney and a history in TV and movies. The first stop was at the Lone Pine Film History Museum. Only a few bucks to get in and full of movie and TV history of the area. From Death Valley and filming of Star Wars to Hopalong Cassidy, Tremors, Iron Man, Gene Autry, The Lone Ranger and Bonanza, to name a few that were filmed in Alabama Hills.

Head west out of Lone Pine just couple miles and you have a large area of BLM for camping, OHV, horse trails, hikes and spectacular views of the Sierra Nevada. There is a trail that goes by multiple natural arches and you can camp with no amenities for up to 14 days.

I spent a week camping at Alabama Hills. Beautiful sunny days, then a day where a storm came thru and left even more snow on the mountains and surrounded us with dark clouds. With Mt. Whitney right in front of me, the clouds surrounded us, but never came over us. I sat and watched the storm dry and warm as it passed by. One night, I woke up in the middle of a full moon and stepped outside to see the moon shimmer off the snowy peaks. Truly the most beautiful area I have camped in my five years living on the road.

In the week I was there I only got a small glimpse of this areas trails and roads. Many areas were camped in but it still felt like I was camping alone. The next camp would be at least a half mile or more away. Which was a bit frustrating while attaching my trailer, when I dumped my bike due to uneven ground. Luckily some tourists were driving to the natural arch trail and helped me get her back up.

I was sad to leave, but I was out of supplies and there was more to see on highway 395. We were off to our next adventure, headed north to meet up with a friend for hot springs, camping, hiking and back road riding.

American Motorcyclist Association honors 2017 champions

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The American Motorcyclist Association recognized its greatest champions and hardest-working organizers from the 2017 season on Jan. 20 during the AMA Championship Banquet at the Hilton Downtown Columbus in Columbus, Ohio.

“The AMA and our chartered clubs and promoters represent the most expansive sanctioned motorsports activity in the world,” said AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman. “The riders, racers and families in this room are the people who bring the passion, talent and dedication to make that possible.

“The AMA is more than an event sanctioning body,” Dingman continued. “We are the leading advocacy organization for motorcycling and ATV riding in America. We support all forms of motorcycling — from organized events to casual riding. We protect the freedoms of motorcyclists and ATV riders from overreaching laws. We negotiate deals and discounts for our members. Through the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame, we preserve the history of the sport. And when I say ‘we,’ I mean all of us — including the AMA members in this room tonight.”

The evening’s program was emceed by Laurette Nicoll and Kevin Kelly.

Cody Webb of Royal Oaks, Calif., was recognized as the AMA Athlete of the Year from National Championship Series competition.

Webb earned the national No. 1 plate in the AMA Endurocross National Championship Series and the Extreme Enduro Pro class at the AMA Tennessee Knockout Extreme Enduro Grand Championship. He has won Tennessee Knockout five straight years.

In addition to his competition successes, Webb mentors younger riders.

“I was fortunate to be able to invite some of the up-and-coming riders in the sport to visit my home for a while,” he said. “We rode together. And I think we learned from each other. It’s a way to help keep this sport growing.”

Attending the ceremony was Rose Hayden, the mother of 2006 MotoGP World Champion Nicky Hayden, who tragically passed away in 2017. The Executive Committee of the AMA Board of Directors passed a resolution last year to name the prestigious AMA Horizon Awards after Nicky.

AMA Horizon Awards are presented to up-and-coming amateur racers in motocross, road racing and dirt track who demonstrate they have the talent, dedication and poise to excel in the professional ranks.

Nicky Hayden won the first AMA Horizon Award ever presented — the 1997 AMA Dirt Track Horizon Award.

Mrs. Hayden presented the Nicky Hayden AMA Road Race Horizon Award to Joseph Blasius of Northville, Mich., and the Nicky Hayden AMA Dirt Track Horizon Award to Hunter Brooks of Escalon, Calif.

The 2017 AMA Athlete of the Year from Grand Championship events was Justin Cooper, AMA Motocross Horizon Award Winner and AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship. Cooper was unable to attend the banquet, but shared his gratitude in a video acceptance speech.

Tayla Jones, who moved to North Carolina from Australia last year, was announced as the AMA Female Racer of the Year. She was the 2017 WXC Champion from the AMSOIL AMA Grand National Cross Country Series, the Women’s Pro Overall Champion from the AMA Full Gas Sprint Enduro Championship Series, and the Women’s Elite Champion from the AMA National Enduro Championship Series.

“I couldn’t have had a better year, really,” Jones said. “It’s been my dream since I was a little kid to race in America.”

The 2017 AMA Vet Racer of the Year was Destry Abbott, who dominated his class in the 2017 AMA Endurocross National Championship Series. Abbott was unable to attend the banquet, but sent an acceptance video.

The 2017 AMA Youth Racer of the Year was Ty Masterpool, who is the Supermini 1 (12-15) Champion and Supermini 2 (13-16) Champion from the Rocky Mountain ATV/MC AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship. Ty was not able to attend the ceremony.

Top-three finishers were recognized from six regional championships and 21 national championships, representing all disciplines of AMA-sanctioned competition.

In addition to the competition awards, in many years the AMA recognizes the AMA Sportsman of the Year. AMA Sportsmen of the Year may be ambassadors, competitors, promoters or others who go above and beyond to elevate the sport or demonstrate exceptional fairness or selflessness in AMA-sanctioned activity.

The 2017 AMA Sportsman of the Year was Jody Barry. At the Daytona 200 in March, a fellow rider crashed and was trapped under his burning motorcycle. Barry stopped, lifted the crashed bike and freed the rider.

“I had gone down, too, and I was going to get my bike when I saw him waving at me,” said Barry, who was the 2016 recipient of the AMA Horizon Award in road racing. “I saw that his bike was on fire and he was stuck there, so I had to lift up the bike a little bit and drag him a little bit to get him free.”
