There are three categories of motorcycle licence in the UK. These are depicted by the letters P, A1, and A and carry age as well as riding restrictions. Here we explain what these mean.

Category P
This can be applied for at 16. It entitles riders who have passed their CBT to ride mopeds with a 50cc engine or less and a maximum speed not exceeding 50km/h.

Category A1
This can be obtained at age 17. It entitles holders, who must pass their full bike test, to ride a light motorcycle with a 125cc engine and a power output of less than 14.6bhp.

Category A
This has two different meanings depending on whether a rider is younger or older than 21.
Category A entitles riders who are aged 17 or older and have passed their full bike test, to ride a bike which is restricted to 33bhp, and has a power to weight ratio of 0.16kW/kg. Or a motorcycle combination with the same restrictions.
If a rider is aged 21 and has passed his Direct Access test or held an A1 entitlement for two years, category A entitles him to ride any size motorcycle with or without a sidecar.

Having seen the beautiful new MV Agusta F4RR Corsacorta parked outside the MCN offices, ready to be tested against its key rivals, the class-leading BMW S1000RR and Kawasaki ZX-10R (full test in next week’s MCN, on sale September 7), we were inspired to take a look at the original F4.

The spiritual successor to the Ducati 916, the F4 at least equalled its sheer beauty and the spec, build quality and handling was there to match. Only the F4 750′s screaming four-cylinder engine failed to be a world beater, yet it demolished Japanese rivals in terms of aural appeal.

Our pick of the MV Agusta F4 750s for sale atmcnbikesforsale.com also happens to be the least expensive example at £5500. The advert promises that it’s in ‘excellent condition… with full service history and no marks or scratches.’ It has had “one elderly owner”, has never seen the rain and has covered 8899 miles. View the advert here.

The new motorcycle test went live on Monday 27 April 2009. It aims to improve the standard of road safety for motorcycle and moped riders. This user group has been identified as having a high risk of injury or death, this is particularly the case for young and inexperienced riders.

Reporting for your practical test

You must bring the following items with you to both module 1 and module 2 of your test. If you do not, the Driving Standards Agency may refuse to carry out the test and you may lose your fee.

provisional licence and paper counterpart

valid DL196

valid theory test certificate

valid module 1 test pass certificate when presenting for module 2 only

What will the test include?

The new test will be completed in two modules. The specified manoeuvres conducted at specific speeds will be tested in module 1 on safe off-road sites.

These specified manoeuvres are:

at least two manoeuvres carried out at slow speed, including a slalom

at least two manoeuvres carried out at higher speed, of which one exercise should be in second or third gear, at a speed of at least 30 km/h (approx. 19 mph) and one exercise avoiding an obstacle at a minimum speed of 50 km/h (approx. 32 mph)

at least two braking manoeuvres, including an emergency brake at a minimum speed of 50 km/h (approx. 32 mph)

On the day of your module 1 test, you will be asked by the examiner to demonstrate your riding ability on either the left-hand or right-hand circuit. The standard off-road layout may change because of local conditions on the casual sites.
