The Suzuki RM-Z450 – fuel injection comes to motocross

It’s finally landed – Fuel Injection has arrived on production motocross machines, with the introduction of the all-new 2008 RM-Z450 from Suzuki.

Unveiled at Suzuki’s European press conference in Rome earlier this week, the all-new RM-Z450 has rewritten the history books in the hotly contested MX1 class, offering fuel injection from the manufacturer acknowledged as THE expert.

Suzuki know how increasingly competitive motocross is, but the challenge to keep winning races and championships is what motivates engineers to strive for perfection. Championship winning experience off-road and on, give Suzuki a unique advantage, bringing GSX-R technology from the chicanes and hairpins, to the berms and whoops.

In order to meet the strict motocross performance standards, Suzuki designed an all-new, battery-less electronic fuel injection system, equating to improved roll-on performance and responsive low-mid range power, while keeping weight to a minimum. Since fuel efficiency has been increased, tank capacity has been reduced to 6.2 litres. Further development sees the new 450 get increased gear ratios, thanks to an all-new five-speed gearbox arrangement.

With complete redevelopment of the power-plant, Suzuki engineers concentrated on the chassis too. An all-new frame design incorporates multiple changes learned throughout racing. With reduced frame rail diameters on tank mounting points, and increased lower tubes (30mm x 30mm), the new chassis offers improved agility with a reduction in weight.

Further improvements come in the form of revised suspension, offering less weight with a more controlled ride, all-new bodywork giving a slimmer feel with improved cooling, revised footpegs offering more boot grip and improved braking performance thanks to ‘wavey’ discs front and rear.

The new RM-Z450 is expected to arrive in the UK in November this year with a recommended retail price close to the current model.

Making its road racing debut at the North West 200 race earlier this year, where Bruce Anstey rode his Relentless Suzuki by TAS GSX-R1000 to a Superstock class win, a repeat of the success continued at the TT centenary races, with another win in the class that sees slightly modified road bikes do battle.

Suzuki GB general manager, Steve Callahan commented, “We are delighted to see the success of the GSX-R1000. In pure road racing it has dominated the class most closely linked to road bikes with minor modifications, even lining up at and the North West and the TT equipped with an ignition key! It’s been over two decades since Kinetic changed the face of the Indian scooter market pioneering a gear-free revolution with its innovative (Honda Lead-based) Kinetic Honda scooter. The Pune-based factory badly requires another blockbuster today, and has roped in Taiwan-based scooter giant Sanyang Industry Co (SYM) in a bold move to help achieve this as early as June 07.

While it’s not yet clear along what lines the new Indo-Taiwanese model will be styled, the new Kinetic SYM scooter will use a four-stroke, single-cylinder 125cc engine. Expect the new scooter to offer a bagful of new features and technology in addition to a healthy list of specifications. Ajinkya Firodia, vice-president, sales & marketing, Kinetic Motor Company, says that the scooters will not use SYM’s ceramic-coated cylinder technology.

Back in Taiwan, SYM produces a line-up boasting over 25 different scooters including a few motorcycles. The 125cc SYM scooter pictured here may not be the exact India-bound version, but it is similar to what we will get. The new 125cc scooter is certain to use telescopic forks instead of the inferior leading link-type front suspension.

The Kinetic SYM will arrive suitably modified to suit Indian conditions and will be the forerunner of several jointly developed models to come. These produced-for-India-in- India scooters will sell through Kinetic’s retail network and crucial to its success will be the ability to maintain SYM quality levels.

Hyosung, the fast-expanding range of motorcycles from South Korea, now includes two ‘luxury’ scooter models with a choice of 125cc and 250cc engines. The new Hyosung MS3-125 is £2,149 and the MS3-250 is £2,649 on the road, and reach dealerships this month.

With the Isle of Man TT races celebrating its centenary this year, Suzuki enthusiasts are in for a very special treat on June 3rd, as Suzuki Sunday kicks off at the Castletown Golf Links Hotel.

With a host of A-list Suzuki celebrities in attendance, Suzuki Sunday welcomes the legendary riders that have become synonymous with the iconic Japanese brand.

Joining fans to celebrate will be; 1993 World 500cc Grand Prix Champion Kevin Schwantz, Japan’s only ever TT winner Mitsuo Ito, as well as British legends such as Graeme Crosby, Chris Walker, John Reynolds, and the Relentless Suzuki by Tas Team riders of Bruce Anstey, Adrian Archibald and Ian Lowry.

As well as the vast array of Suzuki riders, the Golf Links Hotel will play host to an entertainment schedule that includes, a Bandit 1250 stunt rider display, a live band, the Relentless chill-out lounge (with refreshments and games), a merchandise area, dyno testing, and a hog roast and barbeque.

McGuinness had run fourth for most of the first lap but was the quickest on the road from Cronk y Mona through to the Grandstand as he started his flying lap. He lapped at 17m 32.24s, 129.084mph, 7.5s quicker than Guy Martin on the Hydrex Honda and just outside his own lap record of 129.54mph set last year.

As he stopped in the pits to swap over to his superstock bike McGuinness said: “There were so many flies out there. I pulled a tear-off and pulled two at once so I could barely see where I as going on that second lap. The track was really dusty and I had a few slides here there and everywhere as well.”

Guy Martin clocked 128.166 on the Hydrex Honda and Ian Lougher did 128.14mph on the Stobart Honda. HM Plant Honda’s Ian Hutchison was fourth quickest with a lap of 127.54mph ahead of Martin Finnegan’s Klaffi Honda (127.29mph).

Michael Rutter was slowed by a slipping clutch on his first lap with the MSS Kawasaki. He went out on his supersport bike for two laps while the crew rebuilt the clutch. He did 125.00mph on the superbike – the first time he managed two laps in one session on the ZX-10.

Steve Plater did an amazing 121.38mph on the AIM Yamaha – the fastest ever lap for a TT newcomer.  He said: “I’m really comfy on the superbike – it’s the most stable of my three bikes as you’d expect for a full race bike – and it didn’t feel like I was pushing that hard.”

Bruce Anstey was plagued with handling problems on the Relentless Suzuki superbike but topped the Supersport leaderboard with a lap of 122.61mph. Guy Martin was second quickest from Ryan Farquhar and Ian Lougher. McGuinness and Hutchinson both went out late in the session on their 600s and completed a short lap so their laps of 120.24mph and 119.9mph respectively were not really indicative of their true speed.

Anstey was also fastest in Superstock with a 125.10mph lap on the GSX-R1000. McGuinness was second quickest from Finnegan on the MV Agusta.
