We were blessed to minister to many congregations in Hawaii and on the Mainland. You all have been so wonderful to Bonnie Lou and me, and we thank you for your prayers.

Bryan and Shirley are living with us in Hawaii and have been ministering in churches here. Brenda has moved back to Seattle, WA and is a licensed Massage Therapist. Bradley is busy roofing and lives with us. Brent, Bobbie and family are living in DePere, WI where he is a substitute teacher for the school district and she teaches at a daycare. On Sundays, they are in charge of Children’s Ministries at their satellite church.

We pray our Lord’s Blessing on all of you during this Christmas and New Year Season.

Bonnie Lou and I are in Minnesota for 4 ½ months and enjoying preaching every week end. We are now in Paynesville, Minnesota at my brother Dale’s Cabin and with our 31 ft. RV. We are speaking here at the A/G beautiful church preaching this Sunday morning. In the afternoon we go to Alexandra, MN. to attend our Minnesota Family Camp for 4 days and then back to Paynesville, back to the to the farm in Alden, MN were we stay on the farm house were Bonnie Lou was raised, then to DePere, Wisconsin with our youngest son, Brent for some 2 weeks. On and on and preaching almost every week – somewhere.

We will be back in Hawaii in October.

It’s hard to believe that I graduated from Wells High in 1949. While a student, I was the 25^th victim in Wells to come down with the dreaded disease of Polio. I missed an entire year of school, first spending five and one half months at Sister Kinney Institute in Minneapolis and then continuing my recuperation at my home in Wells.

May I tell you the story of what happened?

In the middle of November 1945 while in the 10^th grade science class at Wells High School, I told my friend that I suddenly felt very sick. It seemed like my back was falling into my hips. As soon as school was out, I walked the nine blocks to my home on the east side of town. My legs became so weak that I began to fall down many times before I got home. When I finally arrived, my mother put me to bed. When dad came home, he called the doctor. After the doctor examined me, he told my parents he believed that I had come down with polio. I could hear what he said from the bedroom and I became filled with fear because so many young people from our high school had been stricken with this debilitating disease. I was then taken by ambulance to Albert Lea Hospital and a few days later to Sister Kinney Institute in Minneapolis.

There, I was placed in an isolation ward for two weeks. Every night around 2:00 AM I awakened with excruciating pain. The nurse would come and give me an injection to put me back to sleep. About the middle of the second week at that very hour, I was screaming with pain, but no nurse came. Instead, Jesus appeared at the foot of my bed. I became so afraid; I felt that I was falling from my bed into flames of fire. I screamed and reached out my hand and asked Jesus to save me from this burning Hell. I asked Him to forgive me of my sin and He reached down, took my hand, and pulled me from the fire.

When Jesus touched me, I felt so happy that I cried. Not because of pain, but for joy because He had come into my heart. I knew that I had received Him as my personal Savior. Then Jesus asked me, “Would you preach my Gospel?” I said, “Lord Jesus, how can I do this when I am so crippled, so useless?” I had all kinds of excuses. Jesus did not say anything else but gave me a vision of thousands of ethnic people on a long sandy beach. They were moving toward the ocean and, swept out by the undercurrent, were drowning. I knew then He had called me to tell people around the world that Jesus is God and that He loves them so much that He gave His life on the cross for them so they could be forgiven and have a relationship with Him. I was to preach His Gospel and tell everyone that all they have to do is to ask Jesus to forgive them and invite Him to become the Lord of their life and He will. In addition, He will give them peace and joy and make them whole. “This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life.” (John 3:16 The Message Bible)

As I had grown up in Minnesota, I had never seen a sandy beach or the ocean before. I had never seen the multitude of island people dressed in their native attire. I somehow knew, however, that these ethnic groups were all part of the United States. When I experienced this vision in 1945, this did not make sense. However, when Hawaii became the 50^th state in 1959, I knew the Lord wanted me there. I moved with my family in 1967 from Minnesota to Hawaii to pastor and have lived there since. From Hawaii, I have traveled throughout the world, especially the South Pacific, preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ. Since 2003, I have had the opportunity to spend my summers in Alden and to travel to other parts of Minnesota and throughout the Midwest. On June 5^th, I will be speaking at the 10:10 AM service at Wells Assembly Of God on “I will build My church” from Matthew 16:18.

Bonnie Lou and I want to say a big Mahalo Nui Loa (Thank you very much) for opening your churches so that we could minister to your people. We have seen many come to Christ, renew their lives to serve our Savior, be filled and refilled with the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.

So far in 2011, we have ministered in many churches on Oahu: for our son Bryan at Kailua AG, three Sundays with Pastor Cir Domingo at Maranatha Christian Church, Pastor Ava at Mauga Olive Samoan AG, Pastor Jesse Seumanu at New Covenant Samoan AG, Pastor Bob Leong at Faith Assembly in beautiful Waipio Acres, Pastor John Carlson at Makakilo AG, and Pastor Janet Cordeiro at Waimanalo AG. Next Sunday, March 13^th, we will be with Pastor Gloria Manera at Jesus Cares Ministries for the 9:00 AM service.

Then we travel to the Island of Kauai to minister. We have many fond memories of the people and churches of that beautiful island. That was where we ministered when we first arrived in Hawaii in 1967; we spent 11.5 years pastoring in Lihue. What a blessing it will be to revisit the places where we ministered so long ago.

Yesterday Bryan and Shirley took me to Straub Hospital and the Cataract Surgery on my left eye went perfect. Today Shirley and Bonnie Lou took me back to Honolulu to get the patch off my eye. Dr. Lee stated that my eye ball was a little swollen but that was normal because he also did surgery to correct my stigmatism. It is hard to believe that there has been no pain with this. We minister Sunday morning and for the night service at Bryan’s church and then Monday morning back to the doctor to see how the eye is doing. Mahalo (thank you) for your prayer and concern.

A very good story to help you to understand John 3:16

John 3:16 -

I don’t understand it.

A little boy was selling newspapers on the corner,
the people were in and out of the cold.

The little boy was so cold that he wasn't trying to sell
many papers.

He walked up to a policeman and said,
"Mister,
you wouldn't happen to know where a poor boy could
find a warm place to sleep tonight would you?

You see, I sleep in a box up around the corner there and
down the alley and its awful cold in there for tonight.

“Sure would be nice to have a warm place to stay."

The policeman looked down at the little boy and said, "You
go down the street to that big white house and you knock
on the door. When they come out the door you just say
John 3:16 and they will let you in."

So he did. He walked up the steps and knocked on the
door, and a lady answered. He looked up and said,
"John 3:16." The lady said, "Come on in, Son."

She took him in and she sat him down in a split bottom
rocker in front of a great big old fireplace, and she went
off. The boy sat there for a while and thought to himself:
John 3:16... I don't understand it, but it sure makes
a cold boy warm.

Later she came back and asked him "Are you hungry?"
He said, "Well, just a little. I haven't eaten in a couple of
days, and I guess I could stand a little bit of food,"

The lady took him in the kitchen and sat him down to a table
full of wonderful food. He ate and ate until he couldn't eat
any more. Then he thought to himself:
John 3:16... Boy, I sure don't understand it but it sure
makes a hungry boy full.

She took him upstairs to a bathroom to a huge bathtub
filled with warm water, and he sat there and soaked for a
while. As he soaked, he thought to himself: John 3:16 ...
I sure don't understand it, but it sure makes a dirty boy
clean. You know, I've not had a bath, a real bath, in my
whole life. The only bath I ever had was when I stood in
front of that big old fire hydrant as they flushed it out.
The lady came in and got him. She took him to a room,
tucked him into a big old feather bed, pulled the covers
up around his neck, kissed him goodnight and turned out
the lights. As he lay in the darkness and looked out the
window at the snow coming down on that cold night,
he thought to himself: John 3:16 ... I don't understand it but
it sure makes a tired boy rest.

The next morning the lady came back up and took him
down again to that same big table full of food. After he
ate, she took him back to that same big old split bottom
rocker in front of the fireplace and
picked up a big old Bible.

She sat down in front of him and looked into his young face.
"Do you understand John 3:16?" she asked gently. He
replied, "No, Ma'am, I don't. The first time I ever heard it
was last night when the policeman told me to use it,"
She opened the Bible to John 3:16 and began to explain
to him about Jesus. Right there, in front of that big old fireplace,
he gave his heart and life to Jesus. He sat there
and thought: John 3:16 … don't understand it, but it sure
makes a lost boy feel safe.

You know, I have to confess I don't understand it either,
how God was willing to send His Son to die for me, and how
Jesus would agree to do such a thing. I don't understand
the agony of the Father and every angel in heaven as
they watched Jesus suffer and die. I don't understand the intense
love for ME that kept Jesus on the cross till the end.
I don't understand it, but it sure does make life worth living.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only
begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should
not perish, but have everlasting life.

If you aren't ashamed to do this, please follow the directions.

Jesus said, "If you are ashamed of me, I will be ashamed
of you before my Father." Pass this on only if you mean it.

I do Love God. He is my source of existence. He keeps
me functioning each and every day. Phil 4:13 If you love
God and are not ashamed of all the marvelous things he
has done for you, send this on.

Take 60 seconds & give this a shot!
Let's just see if Satan stops this one.

All you do is:

1) Simply say a small prayer for the person who sent you this,
"Father, God bless this person in whatever it is that You know
he or she may be needing this day
In Jesus Name
Amen !"

2) Then send it on to ten other people.
Within hours ten people have prayed for you,
and you caused a multitude of people to pray to God for
other people. Then sit back and watch the power of God
work in your life for doing the thing that you know He loves.

Aloha in the Wonderful Name of Jesus!

We have had a wonderful year with Bonnie Lou’s recovering and healing from the heart attack of last year. At the thought of the near loss of Bonnie Lou, I became a basket case so our children insisted that I get a checkup. I had a Cardiogram, Echogram, and stated that my heart was in very bad shape, so they insisted I take a Angiogram. I felt that I received my healing and after the test they could find nothing wrong. I had AFib for years and now I am free. Praise the Lord for these two Miracles.

Bryan and Shirley are pastoring Kailua Assembly that is on our Island. Brenda is still living in Arizona. Bradley is still a Roofer and takes good care of our home and property. Brent & Bobbie and family live in DePere, Wisconsin. and are Directors of their church outreach Children’s Ministries in Appleton, WI. We are very proud of our family. We have nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

We keep busy with our ministry in Minnesota preaching to the Ethnic people and other churches, as well as here in Hawaii.

Bonnie Lou and I are free to minister this Sunday September 19^th in churches near Albert Lea and Sunday In Mpls. or St. Paul on the 26th of this month. Reflection Paper of Bill Ashpole

Recently, I was asked to write a reflection paper describing my family members with challenges and disabilities. I described a couple of family members and choose not to share about others. The thought of my father, Bill Ashpole, never came up because I never think of him as having a disability. He has had polio since age 16, and this has changed all facets of his life. After receiving polio, he is in the hospital dealing with his initial challenges. Bill’s timeline of academics and how he can continue his education has to be adjusted because of his stay in the hospital and his energy. If a student like Bill Ashpole attended my classroom, I would ensure his time in the class would be as comfortable as possible and accessible. The way Bill Ashpole interacts with his peers is at times a direct reflection of how they see him. Even though Bill has this disability, he has chosen to live his life above his challenges. One cannot cover every detail of this great man’s life, but I will highlight some of the aspects that pertain to him who chooses to overcome his challenges.

A polio epidemic went through Wells High School in November 1945, and the twenty-fifth of 25 students infected is Bill Ashpole. Polio is life threatening for him and the doctor tells his father that Bill has a fifty-fifty chance to live. The first two weeks in the hospital, he is in the intensive care where he is unable to keep any food in his stomach. He is in the hospital, Sister Kenny Institute, which specialized in polio patients. Ultimately, they believe that healing would come from God. After being in the hospital for a couple of months, it is suggested that surgery would not be done, instead they try hot packs. The hot packs were supposed to loosen the muscles, but it made them tighten up. At this point, the hospital is unsure if he will walk again. Bill is bed stricken for his entire five and a half month stay in the hospital. He was only allowed to leave his bed for therapy, which happened twice a week. After five and a half months in the hospital, Bill is released from the hospital to go home.

Bill’s educational experience has to be adjusted in order for him to continue his schooling. He would have liked to have had a tutor like one of the patients in the hospital. During Bill’s recovery time at the hospital, he is in a room full of 50 patients. The patient next to him, a son of a wealthy farmer, received one on one tutoring from a teacher. This particular patient was the only one in the room that received one on one instruction. Bill’s family was not able to afford one on one education. Also, the state board of education did not offer any education for the patients in the recovery room. Because of Bill's hospital stay he missed a whole year of school. The following school year he attends a full schedule of classes redoing his sophomore year. He gets around school with crutches that have extensions to his elbows. Bill passes out a couple of times at school in the afternoon due to exhaustion. His typing teacher sees him faint and arranges for him to attend half days until he graduates from school at age 19. Later he attends North Central Bible College for one semester. Bill thinks he has enough Bible education so he stops going to school. He gets married and on his honeymoon, he starts preaching at his first church. After a year, he figures out that he needs more Bible education. He goes back to North Central Bible College for 3 more years. At that time, they did not have a four-year degree, so he completed all of the available college courses offered. Soon after age 40, his college that he attended offers a four-year degree. He does 17 credit hours of home study courses, so Bill receives his BA in Theology at age 45.

If a child like Bill came to my class, it would be an easy decision to accommodate him in the classroom. Personally, I would go through each area of the classroom eliminating all obstacles. Further, I would imagine myself as that child with pretend crutches that would expand the width of the child’s crutches. I would go through the room with the crutches to cover each section of the classroom to see if it was accessible and that the floors would be smooth with no potential hazards. I would be sensitive to the needs of the child’s health and well being. If it was necessary for this child to attend school half days, I would speak to the principal and his parents to make it happen. Since the child has a stutter, I would track down the speech pathologist for direct help in correcting his speech. It seems that adjusting my lesson instruction would not be necessary for this student.

Bill Ashpole’s interaction with his peers varies based on how people choose to look at his disability. In high school, some of the other students would take away his crutches and tease him. As a preacher, one of the more negative comments was, you’re a man of faith, and you can’t preach the gospel, because you are not wholly healed. A preacher from Minnesota eluded that Bill looked like a cowboy from the movies that had a limp. One of the patrons of his church speaking of his driving called him “lead foot” partly for speeding and the other referring to his condition. A local book store owner who has cerebral palsy, would joke with Bill saying they would open a stir-fry restaurant called “Watch Me Wok.” The majority of people look to him as a leader, a pastor, a mentor, and a friend that they choose not to ponder on the disability.

Bill Ashpole chooses to live above his challenges. He goes by the motto that his mother had on a plaque. “Only one life will soon be past, only what’s done for Christ will last (Anonymous).” Even though his challenges take a toll on his energy and abilities he still chooses to rise above them. If he exerts himself by doing a project, the next day his body tells him to stay in bed and rest, instead he chooses to get up and make his day productive. There are some days that his polio leg is not cooperative, yet he literally wills his leg and body to do what he chooses. Bill has been a pastor for more than 50 years. During the last 24 years of preaching he was the Assistant Superintendent of the Assemblies of God for the state of Hawaii. He has been on several trips to the islands of the Pacific and Atlantic as a Missionary never allowing his disability to slow him down.

Most of the time, I did not notice Bill’s challenges. He endured a lot since he got polio and how it affected his education. It would be easy to make adjustments for a student like him in my classroom. Bill stands strong when dealing with other people and with life’s challenges. I don’t know Bill Ashpole as the man who has a disability, I just know him as Dad.

We keep busy preaching every week Preaching here in Minnesota to the Ethiopian and Hmong people. The last of this month we go to DePere, Wisconsin preach at a Hmong Assembly. July we go to the Minnesota Family Camp in Alexandria with our Motor home and then go to my brother Dale's cabin in Paynesville to go fishing. We will also preach in the Assembly church there.
