At one time Buffalo was riding atop the Eastern Division but they have had a run of hard luck and now are on the bottom.<br />Of course our Chiefs have had that hard luck run for the entire season except for beating the Division leader Denver. The Chiefs opened well against New Orleans last week but have had the second half jitters nearly every week - maybe this is the week we turn things around. The defense needs to talk to the sackers at Price Chopper since they just can't nail the opposing quarterback with a sack - plastic or paper.<br />It will be back on the road next week so this may be the chance to break a long losing string. The Bills are no pushover so this may be a wide open battle from the get go.

November 4, 2008

One step at a time - looking back it could be a 4-4 season but the Chiefs have not learned to play a complete game. Only Detroit has a worse record and they, too, are showing signs of life forcing the Bears to end, much like the locals but no finishing touch. Tyler Thigpen has a great first half against a good Tampa Bay team but a couple of calls went the wrong way in the second stanza and the game was decided by the flip of a coin. Looking at the last half it would appear that the Chiefs might win two or three and if it works out that way there will be a solid draft choice waiting. Too bad this has been a down year since the West Division is having it's worst season ever. San Diego is the best of the litter but they are far from a playoff contender. Gunther's defense against the run is improving but the secondary needs a facelift. This could be the worst season in team history but it would take a total meltdown to match Paul Wiggin's two victory record in 1977.

Herm Edwards coached in the Big Apple before coming to our town - he had good times and bad and is now riding the crest of awful times in Chief's country. By mid week and beyond he was still not sure who would be at quarterback and if he was to appear on the wheel of fortune television show he most likely would come up bankrupt. But dear friends that is the nature of the business - and the same story is being lived in several other National Football League cities. Our situation is being compounded by the antics of Larry Johnson who seems to have an alledged fetish for women and nightclubs. At the time of this writing we were still awaiting the Commish's ruling on what to do about this highly paid running back who is having a worse than bad season. I told you time and again that it will take a great deal of patience to get thru the season and a half of that waiting period is almost in the books. You can't punish these little kids with a switch but you can remove several hundred thousand for every game they miss because of stupid behavior. He claims to be wearing a three hundred thousand dollar watch but I doubt that it tells any better time than the locker room attendants' Timex. After New York comes Tampa Bay and the good doctor Kevorkian is looking over the patient to consider pulling the plug. Nothing is easy in the world right now and about the only advice I can give is - stay out of the stock market and dig a deep hole in the back yard for your spare change.

Sunday was a day to remember in the National Football Leagues - five games decided on the final play and maybe the most dramatic ending of all came in Arizona when the the Cardinal's upended the Dallas punter and the oddsmakers. The parity in the NFL is taking over; what with the number of underdogs winning week after week. Our Chiefs need to give thier faithful a break by playing decent football against Tennessee this weekend. Tennessee is undefeated in five starts so it will take some doing on the part of Brodie Croyle on his return to the lineup. Denver is still on top of the West but San Diego is only a game behind. Oakland has a new coach but they are playing on a par with the Chiefs and look to be the worst in the Division. The week off gave the Chiefs the opportunity to heal their wounds and be better prepared for the final eleven games. Tony Gonzalez is still a Chief but the deadline for trades is Tuesday so something may develop.

I though the Atlanta debacle was a disaster for the Chiefs; but instead it was a sign of thing to come.<br /><br />Like the last game last Sunday in Carolina. Herm would say after the game that the team got off to a rather good start. I don't know what game he was watching but it was not ours since the bottom fell out early and there was never any sign of recovery. It was disgraceful even if the players are young and learning. This is the NFL and there is no excuse for the poor quality of play against Carolina. They are still my team but I can't overlook the team's performance in three of the first five games played. The players are beginning to play for themselves, not the team. That's what happens when you lose control and it appears the coaching staff is asleep at the switch; why else would the team fail so miserable in Carolina? There are four other teams in the NFL as bad or worse than K.C.; but misery and company don't necessarily go together for long. These are not people who sleep under a bridge - they are highly paid professionals who should be doing a better job. There are eleven games to go this season - time someone lights a fire under some rears.

Denver ran out of luck and the Chiefs played a complete game. It was obvious the passion for the game was evident and the crowd helped with a vigorous display of rooting. Larry Johnson played the kind game he is being paid to play. Carolina this week will present a better defense than the Broncos so there must not be any let down in the level of play. Damon Huard gave the offense stability and his receivers did an excellent job in the red zone. It was a lengthy dry spell but there must be a consistent effort on the part of all to make the Carolina trip a winner.<br />Carolina is in the N.F.C. so the two teams seldom meet. I would think the win at Arrowhead will give the Chiefs a bit of momentum. Hey, let's make it a streak of two.

When this season started it was thought that Denver and Kansas City were pretty much on par to battle for second or third in the West. That has all changed with the Broncos jumping out to a three win start. San Diego was the choice in the West and maybe a good choice to go all the way. Well, we all know now that the Chargers lost a couple of games on last minute heroics by the opposition. I still think San Diego is the best - a fact to be proved in the next thirteen games. Right now our Chiefs are in the midst of their worst losing streak in team history and with the schedule looking pretty tough who knows what might be the fate of our young team. I do know that finding a regular at quarterback is a must if the Chiefs are to win any games. The defense looks good at times but the offense is in big trouble. We need to support our team and at the same time bite the bullet. Not easy to do; but I'll show up and I hope you do too.

At the beginning of the season I figured the Denver Broncos to be par with the Chiefs; now that we have had a chance to look at both teams I would have to say Denver is one of the NFL's top six or seven teams and looks to be a contender for the playoffs. Most of the difference in the two teams is at the quarterback position. Unfortunately Brodie Croyals went down in the first game and left the mess we looked at versus Oakland. Hopefully Brodie will be back after the October 11 bye week. Unless there is a change in attitude with Larry Johnson; I would prefer to see Jamal Charles in that position. Herm Edwards says he is going to stay with his youth program so it looks like patience will be a priority, so Hang in there.

Oakland, Atlanta and Denver are the next three stepping stones to the weekend break - I left out an away game at Carolina, and good reason since Carolina is off and running to a playoff season. The break comes on the 12th of October and will be a good time for Herm to assess the good and bad. Right now I am encouraged by the defensive play and Damon Huard is a GOOD REPLACEMENT FOR YOUNG Brodie. Some will say Brodie can't take it; but I say let a three hundred pound beast drive you into the turf and you will get some of the feel that Brodie did in New England. This has been a bad start for quarterbacks in the league and undoubtedly that will have a big effect on the final standings.<br />I think we will be three and two by break time. If that is the case we will be on target for my eight and eight guess. The Denver game will be a huge contest for the Chiefs but Kansas City always plays well against the Broncos here. Good Luck.

The people in Vegas think the Chiefs game in New England is a lock for the Patroits. Well I can tell you this; Herm Edwards' team is not planning on throwing in the towel Sunday. Sure, the Patroits have a great team but great teams do not always win.<br />This being the first game for both clubs means that anything can happen - I've seen it before when a team of talented youngsters insists on winning.<br />Tom Brady the great Patroit quarterback has not played a down in the pre-season so obviously he is a bit rusty when it comes to competitive football on the NFL scale.<br />Brodie Croyle has looked good in the pre-season but has also looked bad. He is still learning but don't count him out of a good performance in Beantown. A columnist for the local paper writes the Chiefs out of this one but he seldom picks a winner, soooooo.<br />Our defense is improved over a year ago and that is very encouraging. Good defenses usually make the difference in a big games and this is a big one for both teams - the first one always is - so let the games begin and let us hope for a top drawer performance.

I am a bit bewildered at the play of our chiefs. Seems almost like the end zone is quarantined. Things must improve if the team is to make any kind of game with the Patriots in New England on the 7th of September. The many injuries would indicate that some of the boys are not in condition. I think Brodie is improving but he can't do it all - blocking would be a big help. As soon as the boys learn how to put the ball in the end as the boys learn how to put the ball in the end zone our troubles will be over. The linebackers are not getting it done; but hopefully when we have them all playing as a unit things will improve. I've been through these depressing times before and it seems that things have a way of improving as the season progresses. It will take a great deal of patience and a little less finger pointing. Just pray that we don't get spanked too badly in New England.

Like I told everybody who would listen - we need to exercise patience in the pre-season because the coaches want to look at all the players before cutdown. So you have a mish mash of players from the starting group. Ten the first-string backups and the guys who may or may not have a chance to make the team. Brodie looked alright in the first drive last week but he needs to get the ball in the end zone. We saw last year what would happen when we settle for three while the other guys go for seven. Of course they are looking for a place kicker and he needs game experience; but if you want to put bodies in seats you have to make the game competitive even if it is a pre-season encounter. Golly, I remember when Hank Stram would schedule six and seven games in the pre-season - by the time the regular season started the guys were bruised and bloodied and too tired for the real thing. The Miami contest this week will be a carbon copy of what we have seen but the coaches will have a better grasp on the final roster. There will be a meet the Chiefs luncheon at the Hyatt on the 26th and the final pre-season game on the 28th - from then on they all count.

It's tailgatin' teim and the fun begins at Arrowhead. Folks come in from all over the Midwest to light up their grills til game time. Most of the games this season; we are home a week and then gone a week. So the recovery time between games gives the traveler a chance to recoup. <br /><br />I am amazed at the number of fans that make it to the games from western Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa and Arkansas. Six hours on the road - four at Arrowhead and then back home - I did a little polling one Sunday and counted nearly three hundred that make the journey every game day. I am only counting the fans from over three hundred miles - because there are countless thousands who venture in from a hundred out. Gasoline prices are coming down a bit, so that will help. There have been a number of fans who may be having a hard time and have turned in their long held tickets. That has only opened up some good seats for folks who have been waiting for a move to a better location. I would suggest if you are in the market for a seat upgrade or change; now is a great time to make the move.

One down and three to go and we will be ready for the real thing come September 7 in New England. I have spoken - my Chiefs will win at least eight games - maybe nine - and we will take one giant step toward a playoff appearance. Be patient with Brodie - he is vastly improving over a season past. The offensive line looked almost presentable against a tough Bear defense and their play will improve. The best thing to come out of the Bears game was the defensive line play. The secondary is quicker, stronger and much more aggressive. We needed to see improvement on the special teams side of the ball and it appears some of the new people will make it work. There are a couple of little bugs on the team that will make you sit up and take notice. I think I read someplace, "little things mean a lot". Our boys play Arizona on the 16th at Arrowhead and this game will be a winner since both teams are headed in a new direction. Whet your football appetite and show up on the 16th - you'll be glad you did - if not listen to 101 the Fox or on the Internet.

THE COUNTDOWN HAS BEGUN, THE NATIONAL FOOTBALL SEASON STARTED THIS PAST WEEKEND IN CANTON, OHIO WITH THE PLAYING OF THE HALL OF FAME CLASSIC.<br />THE WASHINGTON REDSKINS TRAILED THE INDIANAPOLIS COLTS AT HALFTIME BY A TOUCHDOWN BUT WASHINGTON ROARED BACK IN THE SECOND HALF TO WIN BY FOURTEEN.<br />IT'S THE CHIEFS TURN NEXT AS THEY GO TO THE SOLDIER FIELD TO PLAY THE BEARS ON THURSDAY NIGHT. As for good, bad and ugly I think we had our fair share in 2007. Fooled me – I predicted before it began that we would win ten or eleven games. That was as far off base as the newsman who predicted Germany would win World War II. The Chiefs have a tendency to come roaring back after a losing season so look for good things to begin in September. They better be good because the schedule looks like the north sea filled with ice mountains. Our defense will be much improved and that will help the offense by keeping the bad people out of our end zone. Pay attention to ol’ Grigs – 2008 will be the start of something big – if that sounds like a song title – it is. I’m ready right now but it’s best to let them play the Super Bowl. I sorta like New England. And by the way we play the Patriots next year. It has been one to forget too; it has been a number of seasons since the team played so poorly after getting a four and three start. The Chiefs need two cornerbacks and a couple of offensive linemen who can protect the quarterback and level the opposing tacklers. I really feel that Brodie Croyle can do the job at quarterback; but he will need the help I am talking about. <br /><br />Have a beautiful New Year and let’s all get ready for what lies ahead; a new stadium and a renewal of attitude and spirit-plus of course a few good men.

Time to Get Serious

Now that the Chiefs have completed the worst home record in thirty years it’s time to get real serious or match the 4 – 12 record of the Chiefs in 1987 and ‘88 when Frank Ganz was coach. Carl Peterson came to town and brought Marty Schottenheimer who quickly changed the game plan at Arrowhead. Herm Edwards has called this a rebuilding year but little was done to make this team competitive. Detroit comes this week in the Motor City and the Lions are good at home – then it will be off to New York and the Jets for the finale. About the only good thing to emerge from the 2007 debacle is the fact that the Chiefs will get a high draft choice. One man does not make a winner; but maybe there are some free agents lurking out there to help this gang along. Let’s hope it’s a happy new year for all concerned.

Our Last Home Game: Chiefs and Titans

It's that final home game of a remarkable season. A season that began in rather dismal fashion, went through a slight correction process, and then frittered away dismally. Crowd reaction became rather hostile and the scoring drought was scary. In fact, one stretch featured the scoring machine of one defensive star, Jared Allen, who scored the only TD in six quarters of play.<br /><br />This week's game with Tennessee is the Chiefs' final home encounter and will be seen by the smallest Arrowhead crowd in many years -- but it's like I tell our fans -- it's our entry in the NFL. It's necessary that we give the gang our support, or else what would we be doing on Sundays? We will get better, starting next year -- count on it.<br /><br />And folks, pay no attention to Jason of the star who asks you to stay away from this game. It would be like us saying not to get or read the paper. I don't like boycotts, especially when it comes to my teams.

Chiefs and Chargers

I got to mulling over the state of affairs at Arrowhead and have come to the conclusion that things will get better – starting this week in the game with San Diego. The Chiefs beat them on their own turf earlier and now have the benefit of friendly fans and home cooking. Brodie is getting his chance and he looked like a quick-learner last week. He’s our man for the future. The Chiefs will benefit from a bad weather weekend which should help. If the west coast boys could play in a fire it might help us if we get cold, wet weather for the game. The Division race isn’t over yet; so let’s hang in there.

Oakland And Kansas City

Oakland comes to Arrowhead this week and the game brings together two teams that are struggling. Herm Edwards said at his press conference the team must make some big improvements in the offense area – too much burden has been shifted to the defense. The fact that the Chiefs cannot score touchdowns is obviously the reason the team is going in the wrong direction. When your offensive output hovers in the bottom of the league standings you’ve got problems. I personally think that if Brodie is going to be given the reins, let him loose – if the Chiefs have a shot at the playoffs it appears that the opportunity is rapidly going down the tube. It looks as if a break-even season is the best we can expect. Playing conservative football is alright if you have a team that can stay in the game ‘til the end – that is not happening. So, let it all hang out – look at the overall Team picture – play the guys who are in the future plans and hope for the best.

Chiefs at Colts

It was not pretty. In fact it was a total disaster at Arrowhead and the third loss the Chiefs have suffered at home this season. Sorry but I missed the boat on my prediction that our boys would make the big show. Unless there is a total turn around this may be a season we will want to forget. Huard looked pretty helpless working behind a porous front line. On top of that he got hurt and there is some question as to his availability as a back-up for the Indianapolis game. The Colts, meanwhile, lost to San Diego when their usually reliable place-kicker missed the winning field goal on the last play. It would take a super human effort for the Chiefs to win this week; so instead we will just look to our next home game which will be against Oakland.

Chiefs and Broncos

Denver has been in the cat-bird-seat the past few years when they journey into Arrowhead – not so this time since the Chiefs have the edge in the West. The edge comes from Kansas City’s win over San Diego. It appears that the west will be a real battle in the trenches with everybody but Oakland getting in on the act. The Chiefs offense is still ugly at times; but a charged up defense keeps them in the game and somehow, someway they score and win. Huard seems to gain more confidence with the play calling of Mike Solari – so we just hope that trend continues. It doesn’t get any easier next week with the Chiefs packing for a trip to Indianapolis.

Packers and Chiefs

Forty years ago Green Bay met Kansas City in the very first game between the upstart American Football League and the well established National Football League. It was called the World Championship and would evolve into the Super Bowl as we know it today. Green Bay would win that initial contest 35 to 10 but the game was a battle through the first half with the Packers leading just 14 to 10. <br /><br />Now here we are forty years later and these two teams are leading their divisions. The Packers are an offensive powerhouse led by Brett Favre. The Chiefs are still looking for an offense but defensively, led by Jared Allen, they are a tough nut to crack. The game has all the glitter of a championship encounter but the Chiefs have their local crowd that could mean the difference. Favre, however, is a veteran of the wars and the crowds so it will take a lot to rattle the old pro. Expect a great game – a low score - and a Chiefs win.

Chiefs Bye Week

Five of the Chiefs next seven games will be played at Arrowhead. This is the bye week so its time for the injured to get well and the offensive coordinator to dream up new game ending plots to keep the home folks in suspense. Green Bay comes to town on November 4th and there is no reason to believe that this encounter will be any different than replays of the Raider game last week – which was another nail-biter down to the final gun. And it doesn’t get any easier down the road with Denver coming here and then the Chiefs take a side trip to Indianapolis. <br /><br />Kansas City needs to develop a more aggressive mode of attack – since the L.J. up the middles and swing passes for two or three yards are easy prey for good defensive gurus. The red zone has turned into no man’s land and threes are often the best we can muster – someday our luck will run out. One long run by Larry and one long pass to Bowe was about the size of it in Oakland – fortunately the Chiefs had the likes of Jared Allen and his defensive buddies there to bail out a lackluster offensive program. I marvel at winning four of the last five – so let’s take ‘ em anyway we can – a win is a win is a win.

<media:rating>nonadult</media:rating>
