Billy Joel is quite the chick magnet. The "Piano Man" was walking uptown after lunch with a pal the other day when a young, tanned temptress took his elbow and began walking with him. Joel shared a quick laugh with the brown-haired beauty - but kept his hands to himself, safely tucked inside his jacket pockets. "Billy didn't even know her name. She just came up to him, said she was a fan," said a representative for Joel. "He thinks she said she was from Lebanon. He said she was very nice and charming."

He just can't let it be! Wouldn't have it any other way! Well he’s doing again it folks! Paul’s coming out with a 3-disc cd/dvd standard edition and a 4-disc deluxe version with a bonus dvd of his live performance “Good Evening New York City!” As far as I can tell, McCartney has been a a rock inspiration to many other artists and will forever be a legend in my eyes. After everything with The Beatles, the tragic death of some of those members and even the personal battles we don’t know about, Paul McCartney’s music is reaching a status that is sure to continue to leave a profound historical mark on music worldwide. The man seems unstoppable! I unfortunately wasn’t able to attend the show in New York, but there is no way that I’m going to miss out on this combo phenomenon! I just ordered my copy today.

Where Joel is a journalist, John is a fantasist. Joel vividly relates stories of life experience; John invents them. Joel traffics in specificity while John leaves more room for universality. The former is a riskier artistic tack than the latter - no surprise that their most specific songs, Joel's "We Didn't Start The Fire" and John's "Candle In The Wind," are also their most insipid.

But by adhering to his Boomer-centric POV, Joel depletes his shelf life and limits his audience. His music is grounded in reminiscence, and we can only reminisce for so long. John, though - he's off in outer space. We're lucky enough to be there when he touches down.

By: Jonathan Zwickel
(October 30th, 2009)

With roughly a half a billion albums sold between them, Elton John and Billy Joel are two of the most successful pop artists of all-time. But when considering, on the occasion of their "Face 2 Face" Tour-opening dates at KeyArena this week, the currency of these piano-centric megastars, a curious truth arises: Elton John is relevant. Billy Joel is not.

Here's Elton John cameoing on just-released albums by Alice In Chains and Brandi Carlile and collaborating with next-gen hitmakers like Timbaland and the Scissor Sisters. There's John, 62 years-old, recording new soundtrack material for blockbuster movies and Broadway shows, mocking (and being mocked by) UK pop trollop Lily Allen, and guest-appearing on a posthumous 2Pac track and underground grime single.

And where's Billy Joel? He hasn't released a record of new pop songs in 16 years. By all appearances, he isn't collaborating with anyone except his divorce lawyer, his accountant and his rehab counselor. His only recent output is a pair of unheard singles ("Christmas In Fallujah," anyone?) and an even-less-heard album of classical piano pieces from 2001. Even with Twyla Tharp's musical adaptation of his hit "Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)" and Will Ferrell's viciously satirical rendition of "Goodnight Saigon" on "Saturday Night Live" this past May, Joel, 60, is today a ghost haunting the cultural landscape. This despite penning several of the most beloved tunes in the pop pantheon.

So: What gives?

More than most pop stars, Billy Joel grew up in front of his audience. His music has always been about coming of age - whatever that age may be. His nakedly biographical approach shirks metaphor for authenticity. Joel's songs are musical pushpins tacked into the timeline of his fans' lives, memories that can't be taken away. "You May Be Right" comes on the radio (better yet, karaoke) and you sing along like you did way back when. (I do, at least. I've been a Billy Joel fan since before my bar mitzvah.)

Here's the downside: Say you never heard "You May Be Right" before yesterday. Joel's biography is immaterial to anyone who wasn't there at the time; it's someone else's history. With his diarist's intimacy, his songs exude personality and catharsis but mean little to anyone outside their (admittedly large though mostly unseen) sphere. Even less if the personality behind them - a jeans-and-sport coat wearing, supermodel marrying, occasional issue-decrying brash kid from the 'burbs turned radio-dominating "Piano Man" - rubs you the wrong way.

This supposition is meant to take away nothing from the songs themselves but to understand why nobody appreciates Billy Joel except fans of Billy Joel.

Elton John, on the other hand: Everyone appreciates Elton John. Even people who hate "Crocodile Rock," even Eminem. He's a personality beyond personal history, as flamboyant as Joel is recalcitrant, showbiz glamour wrapped in oversize shades and a sequined suit. There are traces of autobiography in his songs, but they're bigger than John himself, untethered to person, place or time. Perhaps because his most famous numbers are collaborations with songwriter Bernie Taupin there's less sense of me-ism - Joel's bread and butter - behind them. Who is this "Rocket Man?" A friend of "Bennie and The Jets?" Does he ride with "Captain Fantastic and The Brown Dirt Cowboy?"

NEW YORK -- A surprise collaboration by Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel capped Thursday night's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25th anniversary concert, at Madison Square Garden.

"Long Island is about to meet New Jersey on the neutral ground of New York City," Springsteen said, at about 1 a.m., as the six-hour show was winding down. Joel, who hadn't been among the confirmed guests for the all-star concert, took his place at a grand piano, with two members of his own band temporarily joining the E Street Band.

Joel sang three of his own songs -- "You May Be Right," "Only the Good Die Young" and "New York State of Mind" -- with Springsteen adding some duet vocals. Then he dueted with Springsteen's on the Boss' "Born To Run." Both men participated in the evening's last song, a joyous run through Jackie Wilson's "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher" with John Fogerty, Darlene Love, Tom Morello and Sam Moore (who all also performed during Springsteen's set) helping out, and Jackson Browne and Peter Wolf chipping in on backing vocals.

There were many other surprises in the course of the evening.

Jeff Beck, who is on the bill for the second anniversary concert, Friday, showed up on Thursday, too, helping Stevie Wonder perform "Superstition." Wonder also paid tribute to Michael Jackson by singing the Jackson hit, "The Way You Make Me Feel," with the help of John Legend, and brought out Sting for a medley of his own "Higher Ground" and the Police's "Roxanne."

David Crosby and Graham Nash sang backing vocals on Paul Simon's cover of the Beatles' "Here Comes the Sun," and Crosby, Nash and Stephen Stills performed an unplugged version of the Allman Brothers Band's "Midnight Rider" with Bonnie Raitt.

Springsteen and Fogerty paid tribute to Roy Orbison by singing Orbison's "Oh, Pretty Woman"; Springsteen wouldn't have had the courage to attempt it on his own, he said. Springsteen, who was on the stage the longest of any co-headliner (about an hour and 45 minutes), also talked about seeing Sam Moore, when he was part of the duo Sam and Dave, at the Satellite Lounge near Fort Dix, and said he learned a lot about leading a band from watching Moore work.

Tom Hanks made a short speech at the start of evening, talking about the power of rock 'n' roll.

After an opening number by Jerry Lee Lewis, the show had four sets, anchored by Springsteen, Wonder, Simon and Crosby, Stills and Nash; all welcomed various guests. Among those who will perform at Friday's show are U2, Metallica, Aretha Franklin, Lou Reed, Ray Davies, Ozzy Osbourne, Buddy Guy and Lenny Kravitz.

The shows will raise funds to establish a permanent endowment for for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, and its museum.

Though these are billed as 25th anniversary concerts, the foundation was actually formed 26 years ago, in 1983, the hall started inducting members in 1986, and it opened its doors to the public in Cleveland in 1995.

Four hours of highlights from both shows will air on HBO on Nov. 29.
I only got 41 songs as well. After a while of fluent writing my thoughts were blank somehow. But we've got the television playing (in German) at the same time. That doesn't make thinking about English song titles easier.

I have to wonder if he's going to wind up doing a Best Buy box set, and putting out some of the other stuff like Live on LI & the Russian doc/video. A lot of docs also wind up sitting on shelves for years for any number of reasons.
