AFRICA AND OTHER THINGS

So that was Africa then. I did a whirlwind, across-the-world trip to Zimbabwe in South Central Africa in 9 days. Two days to get there, 5 days actually in the country, and another two days to get back. Trust me, the jet lag I am feeling now is no joke! But it was a personal trip and needed to be done. I made the most of it, and enjoyed adding yet another crazy place I’ve visited to the ever growing list. I love travel, experiencing new places, seeing the world. And Zimbabwe is definitely one of the most simultaneously interesting and culturally shocking places I have visited. Beautiful countryside and breathtaking views, coupled with a currency that’s non-existent, food and power shortages and a red-tape mentality that has to be seen to be believed.

But now it’s back to business. I’m looking forward to the Idol dates later in the year. Yes, I know they haven’t been announced yet, but I know we’re doing a short run, and that’s fine by me. Playing guitar in that band is one of the best experiences I’ve had in my career and I embrace any chance I get to play those songs. I also feel that Camp Freddy will have a show or two between now and then – we never quite know what’s happening until it happens, but there’s talk of one or two things, so it will be nice to get with my long time brothers in music and play together again. Also, I think I’m doing a couple of things with Gibson around my Les Paul model – not sure of the details yet, but of course – when I know them, so will you. And finally, I will be focusing on the film and TV stuff I’ve been working on – both in front of the camera and behind it. Ah, ‘Show Biz’ – what a beautifully varied and all-consuming world.

And speaking of the business of show………The ‘Entertainment’ business is, by definition, a business. If anyone reading this has any illusion that you’re going to write a hit song/screenplay/novel/TV Show and simply enjoy the creative process, you are sadly mistaken. But contrary to popular belief, the “Biz” part of the whole thing can be fun, exciting and very rewarding in it’s own right. I just think that especially in these days of oversaturated internet content, downloads and releases, what sets an artist apart is the ability to not only create (and stay true to what he or she feels or wants to say) but to also embrace the inner workings of the machine. Understand how things work, who does what, why certain things take forever…… anyway, that was my deep and meaningful paragraph!!

I’m going to finish off by telling you all to follow me on Twitter at www.twitter.com/billymorrison. Why, I hear you ask? Well, apart from a bunch of witty 140 character sound bites from me (and some not quite so witty!!), I will be celebrating on Saturday by giving away a signed piece of art by cool LA street artist, Victor. Saturday 18th June will mark 16 years of living life on life’s terms…. Without a drink or a drug. I’m well aware that this kind of landmark is not for everyone, but for me it’s a necessity. And so to celebrate that day, I will have a small competition on my Twitter page at 12 noon West Coast time (3.00pm East Coast) and give away a signed piece of Victor art (see the pic above) to the winner. I’ll hopefully see you all online then for some Q+A etc. That’s it – the jet lag is pulling me under. Back soon.

FIRST QUARTER REPORT

The first quarter report of 2011 is a good one, I'm happy to say. The release of my Gibson Signature Les Paul, some great live shows, an appearance on one of my favorite television shows (Californication), the release of some new music (the 'Be Yourself' EP - get onto I-Tunes and check it out), a mind-bendingly good art show, an evening at the Playboy Mansion, some inspiring and exciting writing sessions in the studio, and a ton of great meals, good company and time spent with my wife. There's pretty much nothing else I could ask for, quite honestly. For a guy like me, this is all gravy - happy to be working, having fun and enjoying the people in my life.

Plans for the summer are in full effect (hopefully I can reveal some of that really soon) and I'm really looking forward to my Fall schedule (that news will be posted very soon - all locked in and waiting for the proverbial green light!) along with some killer Camp Freddy shows then that are already on the books. And I'm sure Winter (if you can call it that in Los Angeles) will be as fun as always - the Camp Freddy Xmas Residency will, I'm sure, be in full effect again this year.

Toss into that some new moves for me in some parallel areas of the entertainment world (what entertainment??? It's all fucking meetings and phone calls!!) and I'm sitting exactly where I like to sit - looking out at a busy, varied and exciting year. But of course, you know the old saying....."If you wanna make God laugh, tell Him your plans!!!" - for today, I'm happy to say its been a good first few months of 2011. Have a great weekend, do something nice for someone else (and dont tell them it was you) - and I'll be back soon.

ART IN THE STREETS

Last night I was lucky enough to attend the opening night party of the ‘Art In The Streets’ exhibition at the Museum Of Contemporary Art in downtown Los Angeles. Anyone who has followed me on this blog will know that I am a huge fan of pop culture/street art and have collected a few pieces myself. So last night’s shindig was an amazing event for me to attend. I described the feeling eloquently on my Twitter account, using the phrase ‘like a pig in shit’ to illustrate my joy!!! I found myself overwhelmed at the sheer number and size of the contemporary pieces and after two hours in the place, I still haven’t seen it all so I gotta go back and check out the rest! But that might also have something to do with the fact that the place was full of art lovers, and every five paces, we stopped and said hello to people we knew, chatted about the art, took photographs etc.

At one point, I was asked to do an interview on camera for something and it was those questions that inspired me to write a blog this morning. Questions like ‘what first attracted you to street art’ and ‘what does street art mean to you’ – I just found myself driving home thinking about it all and decided to blog about it. I mean, I was not the kind of kid that you would have thought would end up standing in front of a painting, or a collage or an installation, quietly appreciating the underlying message it conveys. In fact, when I was a lot younger, I hated museums in general. Dusty old relics of a bygone age hanging on walls where you couldn’t touch them and paintings of old geezers in wigs that looked like my schoolteachers. No thanks!

But along with the musical renaissance that was punk rock came the imagery. The spectacular clothes from Vivienne and Malcolm - (that ironically do the rounds now in the worlds greatest museums!) - and the wonderful artwork of Jamie Reid. The God Save The Queen union jack flag, the postage stamp of the Queen with a safety pin through her lip, these were revolutionary images of rebellion and youth that I could identify with – and when, as an adult, I learnt that these images were reproduced in lithograph form, signed and numbered by the artist, and highly collectable, I made it a point to find them and buy them. This was the first time I realized the power of a nicely framed, subversive piece of art that meant something to me, hanging in my home.

From there, I became aware of other artists that created lithographs, high quality prints, and then obviously from there I became aware of the fine art versions – HPM’s (or hand painted multiples) – extremely limited numbers of these artists works that are not screen-printed but hand crafted. Originals. The more I learnt, the more I realized that the message was a punk rock message. One of ‘anyone can do this’ – one of ‘express yourself’, ‘look around you’, ‘see the truth’, ‘don’t accept what they feed you’ – an extremely creative and individual genre. I related to the vibe and to the emotion. And the way I see it, events like last night are bringing that world into the mainstream consciousness.

I was talking to someone last night who said they didn’t understand it. But I asked them what it was that they didn’t understand – and they proceeded to give me an amazing account of how the art made them feel – fearful (of the world we live in), scared (that the Man is out to get us), heightened awareness of our daily surroundings – I mean, this person was very clear about the many emotions and feelings they experienced while in the museum. I simply pointed out that in that case, they actually did understand it all, that art provokes emotion (that can be different in each person.) That it was obvious they had been very moved by the exhibition. My point is that maybe you don’t have to overthink art. If you look at it and it makes you feel anything, then voila! You get it. It doesn’t have to be the same thing as the artist felt when they made the piece. It’s the same as music – when I write a song, it means a certain thing to me, it’s about a certain thing. But if someone else hears a different message or subject in the same song, then that’s perfect to me. As long as it makes you feel SOMETHING!

Now the debate is, of course, what will happen. When Punk Rock was brought into mainstream consciousness, it died immediately! The energy and the attitude live on of course, but the movement as a whole became diluted and overplayed. But somehow I doubt that will happen with contemporary/street art. It’s been around us for decades. From Andy Warhol to graffiti, we’ve had years of creative, individual expression through art. The fact that Shepard and Banksy and Invader and Blu are now being shown in institutions like the MOCA, alongside Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat just raises the bar and illustrates the power behind the art. The emotions and the messages are the same, and I love that. And the pieces are just amazing. Everyone deserves to be able to see them – and now they can. If you live in LA, get off your fucking arse and go see this exhibition. You can thank me later.
